What to expect
  • Meet your guide at your central Moscow hotel and catch a train or bus (fare for one traveler included) to Sergiev Posad. On route, hear about your destination from your guide and tell them if there’s anything you want to see more of: the itinerary can be tailored around you. One of the ‘Golden Ring’ towns encircling Moscow — so-called for their wealth and power — Sergiev boasts medieval origins. The town is named after Russia’s patron saint, St. Sergius of Radonezh, who established its 14th-century Trinity Lavra Monastery, a UNESCO-listed Orthodox sanctuary. On arrival, look around Sergiev’s highlights, including its churches, wooden buildings, and elegant squares. Entrance fees are at your own expense, but admission to most churches is free. Stroll the boulevards past charming wooden houses made in old-school Russian style, and relax by the lake over a glass of fizzy kvas and flavorsome bread from a pastry shop. Head into the Trinity Lavra to tour its beautiful churches and buildings. Founded in 1337, the complex is the hub of Russia’s Orthodox Church and one of its four leading religious communities. Take in the peaceful cloister, watch the monks at work, and admire the gold-domed 15th-century Trinity Cathedral, onion-domed 16th-century Assumption Cathedral, and 288-foot (88-meter) baroque bell tower as your guide unravels the monastery’s history. Then, view the medieval Russian art and folk crafts at the monastery’s Konny Dvor Museum; gaining insight into Sergiev’s wider history. Visit Sergiev’s famous Toy Museum to see its traditional toy collections, including painted wooden matryoshka dolls, and enjoy an optional tour of the Abramtsevo Estate, a former artists’ colony and picturesque Russian estate that was a magnet for Russia’s artists in the 1800s. Finally, ride the train or bus back to Moscow, finishing with a drop-off at your chosen city-center location.

Sergei Posad visit
Jun. 2019 • Couples
Our guide was Yulia- very knowledgeable and explained so much for us. She speaks excellent English and was very helpful - great job!
The monastery is beautiful-a peaceful holy place with so much history. It’s worth making the journey to visit.
But, we travelled to Sergei Posad by bus from Moscow- poor choice !!! The traffic jams on the highway were very long, and we lost time from our tour. We asked our guide to return by train to Moscow at the end of our trip- much better option. Avoid buses if possible- so many roadworks slows the journey!

Sergiev Posad was fine, Tour had some glitches
Oct. 2018 • Couples
The day before the tour the agent contacted us to ask if we wanted to pay an extra $20 (did not say if this was per person or total) to have a private car take us there and back rather than the train. I opted to go for the original train.

Based on the description of a "pick-up" at our hotel then to the train, I assumed we would be picked-up by a car for that leg. Instead we were met at the hotel by our guide who walked us quickly through 45 minutes, 3 subway stations and about 1.5 km of hoofing to get to the train station. We are over 60, my wife was really steamed at me for booking the tour.

The guide was OK, we have had better and worse, Sergiev Posad was a nice introduction to satellite defense city of the past.

Hello Bandoeagle, We are very sorry to hear about your poor experience. It seems, you enjoyed the city itself and our guide Lena did her very best to make it a great time for you. She specializes on these tours and we felt like you're in the right hands when giving you Lena for this tour. Sorry you didn't quite like the process of taking public train. We offered you an upgrade to the driving mode ($20 is for the car itself, regardless of number of people), but you chose to take a public transport. Unfortunately, it's not quite perfect and some walking is indeed involved, the duration of walking depends on the speed of walking. As for the distance, it can look a bit too much as the train station is huge and even just getting around the train station involves some moderate walking. We hope you still enjoyed the experience at least a bit and have good memories about the trip to Sergiev Posad. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or requests, we'll be more than happy and eager to help. Thank you!
