About
This tour involves 4-5 hour hiking in Hakone (about 8-9km) and you need to be fit to complete it. You will traverse the outer rim of Hakone caldera and enjoy lunch and onsen in this experience.
The 90-min ascent up to the mountain top has an elevation gain of 500 meter. Then the 2.5 hour ridge walk gives you a panoramic view of Hakone area (. As you walk through the bamboo field, you will hear the birds singing and see sakura in spring, red leaves in autumn and step on the powdered snow in deep winter. After the ridge walk, you will go down the mountain in 30 minutes and reach Sengokuhara. Then lunch at local Japanese restaurant. Onsen follows for relaxation.
If the weather is good, you can see Mt Fuji most of the time while you are on the ridge walk. Even when Mt Fuji is hiding behind the clouds, you still have a view of Miyagino and Sengokuhara in this traverse mountain hike.
We go by chartered taxi to the trailhead. Transportation cost is not included in the tour price.

About the operator

- mariagG6451WQ0 contributionsUnforgettable must do hikeThis hike was an unforgettable experience and the highlight of my trip to Japan! Akihiro was incredibly knowledgeable and kind, making the journey through nature even more enjoyable. After the hike, we relaxed at an onsen, which was the perfect way to end the day—I would absolutely do this hike again!Written 4 January 2025
- 543reenam0 contributionsLots of scenic views, fun facts and good foodAki was an amazing tour guide and the walking tour / hike was curated really well. On Aki's tour, we saw and experienced a lot of things we wouldn't have been able to do ourselves, such as the amazake tasting and witnessing a stunning view of Mount Fuji in a very peaceful setting. The hiking parts were nicely paced out; we would hike, have a tea break, hike / walk, have lunch. It never felt strenuous or uncomfortable. We went during late December, and it was only cold when we were in the forest at the highest part of elevation, so maybe 30% of the hike / walking tour. I was a nervous about a winter hike, but the since winter is Japan's dry season, it worked in our favor. The river streams were low and the ground and rocks were dry, so I always felt really. I would consider this a low difficulty and kid-friendly hike. Throughout our hike, Aki took really nice pictures of us and shared fun facts about the history or environment. It was a physically and mentally engaging activity.Written 1 January 2025
- 425lexg0 contributionsGreat! It was an incredible experience! Akihiro is friendly, knowledgeable, and great company for the day. I was glad to have this tour which featured a day in nature and some Japanese history, something different from time spent in the bigger cities. It was a real highlight of my trip to Japan.Written 26 December 2024
- Adventure467448809300 contributionsLovely and thoughtful hike and tour!Aki was a delightful guide, and the hike was lovely and just the right amount of difficulty. We also stopped at a really nice little gift shop and cool old tea house and ended at the Takaido Hakone checkpoint at Lake Ashi which was neat to see. All in all, a very pleasant and well thought out outing!Written 14 December 2024
- Road7308370 contributionsAki's Old Tokaido Road: Where History Meets Hiking MagicIf you are looking for a unique experience that includes hiking on a historical trail, Old Tokaido Road, consider this great experience with Aki, a talented historian and hiker. Aki is passionate about sharing anecdotes regarding this amazing region. The mist and the rain offered us quiet and stunning views. He started his business Coconuts Hike Japan with a commitment to offering the best of Japanese nature and history with visitors. His command of the English language is a plus. Everything from the teahouse visit (introduction to local seafood and Udon noodles), to the Hakone Checkpoint, to the Mishima Shrine were accompanied by historical background. And, this is the best part. Aki helped us navigate the train and the bus systems. At first, I wondered about taking buses within our day, yet the scenery and relief from some of the hiking enhanced the experience. Since we scheduled the hiking in day 2 of our vacation, the info that he provided made the complex Japanese Rail System much easier for the remainder or our travels in Japan. THIS day will long be remembered.Written 5 December 2024

- Miriama_1x0 contributionsOasis of calm in the forestWe had a very pleasant gentle climb through the light dappled forest of cedar and cypress. We visited a working zen Buddhist temple set in beautiful gardens, and then had lunch followed by a relaxing soak in the onsen. Aki was a very informative host and took good care of us, even providing chocolates and a selection of hot drinks including green tea and lattes. Highly recommended.Written 31 October 2024
- SharaBhattacharjee0 contributionsBest hike with an excellent guide! We had a wonderful time with Akihiro as our guide during Hakone-Hachiri Hike. We decided to do this hike on my birthday and loved every bit of it. Aki ensured that we cover offbeat and unique trails during the hike just like how we wanted it. The bucolic nature walk along the old trail culminated with our feet soaked in a stream that had its source from Mt. Fuji. The water was so cold that our bodies completely cooled down and rejuvenated from the arduous hike that can be quite challenging as the path was an ancient one traversed by Japanese merchants and warriors from days long forgotten. Aki also has a seasoned hand at professional photography as he took excellent photos of my husband and I throughout the trail with his DSLR.Written 26 October 2024
- O8448WDjoshuam0 contributionsAmazing Experience! The hike was incredible with gorgeous scenery. Our tour guide had a great knowledge of the area and the temple we were visiting. It was easy to keep pace, and our tour guide didn't push us to do anything we would find difficult. The tour guide was extremely friendly and easy to get along with as well.Written 13 October 2024

- A6878NWpatricks0 contributionsExploring Hidden Gems of Hakone: A Perfectly Crafted Hiking Tour1. The Tour The tour follows a carefully composed route leading through a multitude of different sceneries and places that provide a versatile experience of the Hakone area, its sights, local shops, restaurants, and rich history. We participated in this 8-hour experience as a couple in July 2024. On the day of the trip, the temperature was about 27°C (80.6°F) with 80% humidity. Even though these weather conditions might seem suboptimal for such a long hike, our guide Akihiro made sure to select paths that provided a lot of shade and protection from the sun and heat, making the tour very enjoyable and not overly exhausting at all. Therefore, this tour is absolutely suitable for beginners. This is also due to the fact that some sections of the route are covered by public transport, providing good opportunities to recuperate and fortify for the following walking parts. On top of that, plenty of well-timed breaks to rest, enjoy a local snack, drink, or meal contributed to the overall excellent experience. We began and ended our tour at Hakone Yumoto Station, which was easy to find and conveniently located. Our group consisted of only two people on this day, creating a very personal atmosphere. This was especially due to the fact that hiking tours are not frequently requested during this time of the year. However, as mentioned above, this tour is very well-suited for hot summer days, so there is no need to fear booking it even in hot and humid weather conditions. The hike itself was not overly difficult, with mostly moderate elevation changes and a mix of paved paths and rocky trails. Akihiro was excellent in gauging our fitness level and adjusting the pace accordingly. The tour included numerous breaks, perfectly timed to allow us to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the scenery. On a clear day, you are even able to see Mount Fuji during the trip, which adds to the breathtaking views. For anyone considering this tour, we recommend wearing comfortable hiking shoes, bringing a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. Also, be aware that the costs of public transport, which is (as mentioned above) used for some sections of the tour, are not included in the booking price. This was unproblematic for us since we, like most visitors to Hakone, were in possession of the Hakone Freepass, which eliminates these extra costs. Snacks and meals at local restaurants and shops during the tour are also not included in the booking price, which should be self-explanatory. All in all, this tour is well worth the money and also provides insight into places that usually remain unseen by tourists, making this hike fantastic for experiencing the area in more depth and detail. 2. The Guide Akihiro, a National Certified Tour Guide, is an all-around professional, very friendly, and likable guide with a vast amount of experience, expertise, and knowledge. He took fantastic care of us and made sure that we had a memorable and enjoyable experience by asking and considering our preferences and special interests, thus providing different options for proceeding on the tour. He was happy to answer all of our questions patiently and professionally, making him not only a competent guide but also a great conversation partner throughout our journey through the area, which contributed to the tour being always entertaining and never feeling lengthy or boring. He also shared fascinating cultural and historical insights throughout the hike, enriching our understanding of Hakone. It is also worth mentioning that Akihiro speaks fantastic English, which ensured perfect understanding. On top of all of this, Akihiro took beautiful pictures during the hike, making them available to us for free after the tour (see attached example). He also provided snacks and tea for the breaks we had. Additionally, Akihiro was happy to give numerous recommendations for our stay in Hakone, including food, experiences, and other activities. Booking the tour was straightforward, with clear communication from the start. After the tour, Akihiro promptly sent us the photos he took, which was a wonderful touch that allowed us to relive the experience. Given the quality of the tour and the personalized attention we received, we found this tour to be excellent value for money. 3. Support a Small Business It is also worth noting that Coconuts Hike Japan is a two-person operation, which makes it especially worthwhile to support. The personalized attention and dedication from such a small, passionate team truly enhance the experience and make every effort feel genuine and heartfelt.Written 6 August 2024

Aki is an excellent guide who we would recommend to anyone. He shared many interesting details about the area throughout the day, including answering all of our many questions. Our hike of the Hakone Caldera was excellent, despite the weather being rather wet and cloudy. We enjoyed a very pleasant hike through the forest, taking us to several "viewpoints" for Fuji and Lake Ashi, which I am sure would have been superb had it not been for our poor luck with the weather. The hike itself was not too challenging for us, as we often hike in Scotland, however a fairly good level of fitness would be best as our total elevation gain was about 650m over 10.9km distance.
After the hike, which took around 4.5 hours in total, we ate lunch in a fantastic soba restaurant which we would definitely recommend (especially the hot soba with tempura vegetables and prawns). Aki then took us to a nearby onsen, where we spent an hour, which was very relaxing and a perfect end to an active day.
Aki was very helpful in directing us to the best option for transport to our hotel, which turned out to be the cable car over the Caldera. By this time the clouds had cleared, giving us a view of Lake Ashi.

We had a great day hiking with Aki, he was extremely knowledgable about the forest and animals within it. We spent most of the day with him hiking, eating lunch and then finishing with an onset, it was a great day and would definitely recommend it to anyone considering a hike in Japan. Aki is a legend!!

The views and the guide were amazing!! We hiked on Mt. Kintoki, had a nice time and lunch on the summit and went afterwards towards Hakone. We made interesting stops at Owakudani ("sulfur mountain"), the pretty Hakone Shrine with a Tori at the lake Ashi and saw a pirate ship sailing in Lake Ashi. We then stopped at the traditional teahouse "Amasake", which is located at the "old" path between Kyoto and Edo/Tokyo. Definitely recommend!! And as a nice, relaxing finale, we went to an onsen. We had a great day (:

Thoroughly enjoyed our hike with our guide Aki. He took us on a beautiful scenic route which also avoided any other tourists. Aki is a kind and interesting man, who made the hike both a relaxing and informative day.
After the hike was over Aki took us to a great soba restaurant and some Onsen (hot spring baths) both were really good recommendations.
It was a very well organised day from start to finish. What’s more Aki took some great photos with his SDK camera for us to remember the day by.
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone else visiting Hakone.

Aki did a great job taking us on a beautiful hike with views of Mt. Fuji. His English is perfect and he made it really convenient picking us up at our hotel. He has different levels of hikes, so be sure and understand what level of difficulty you are signing up for and definitely use the hiking poles he brings for your use!

I had this amazing hike with Akihiro in May which I think is the prime time of the year to do this trek. Akihiro has checked the weather in advance to remind me to change to a date with higher chance to see Mt. Fuji and it luckily ended up well with full visibility to enjoy this splendid view of Mt. Fuji. Aki was quite professional with rich knowledge of hiking in japan and history&stories alongside the way. He prepared some hot coffee at the top of mountain and helped to take a lots of picture of me in the nature. At the end of the trip, I was took to a very nice onsen place to relax the body. A perfect day!
