- jessied6740 contributions10/10 group experienceMy family of five adults did the morning cooking class with market tour and rice field visit and had a fantastic experience. Our driver and guide Tata was engaging, informative, gentle and funny. We enjoyed all aspects of the experience, from the setting to the cooking class itself. The staff were brilliant and able to cater to complex dietary needs while also providing a great experience for another family who were attending with two school aged children. Overall I highly recommend Subak - thank you so much for a great experience!Written 4 July 2024
- Anika M0 contributionsAmazing Authentic Bali cooking experienceThe entire cooking school team were fantastic. The Chef, our gorgeous driver and all the ladies in the kitchen went above and beyond to make our afternoon very fun and enjoyable.Written 9 April 2024
- H6843JMfional0 contributionsAwesome experienceThis was a brilliant experience for our family 3 boys aged 15 12 and 10 and they loved it. Food was so delicious and at least 4 out of the 6 meals you could cook at home. Staff were helpful and they pick you up from you homestay or hotel and drop you off. 4 hours great valueWritten 30 March 2024
- Jane B0 contributionsExcellent Cooking ClassWe loved this cooking class. Bit of a drive to get there but worth it. Set in a beautiful peaceful area. Very well organised, clear instructions and Ketut was a great instructor. We cooked each meal and then had the opportunity to taste it. At the end of the cook it was all presented in a buffet style to help yourself, and take home any leftovers. A great selection of dishes that I will try and cook at home as they weren’t complicated and very tasty.Written 3 January 2024
- OnAir468785358610 contributionsAwesome experience ☺️ easy to organise transport, very knowledgeable and excellent English speaking hosts!Recommend this cooking class, you will not come away hungry ! Huge range of recipes with the option to get these sent to you later. Great market tour, where you get to try some local produce. Interesting to learn about the rice paddy’s. Very well run class and get to meet lots of interesting people from other nations.Written 23 October 2023
- steveoQ4465EM0 contributionsUbud, Bali market tour, rice field tour and cooking classWe did a cooking class in Thailand last year which was one of the highlights of our trip so we decided to do another one this time in Ubud, Bali. Definitely do this one - the morning class - so you get to visit the market and learn about local fruits, vegetables and the spices you’ll be using in the cooking class. Although it was our second visit to the rice fields our guide provided some other informative information and was so friendly and patient with all of our questions. The cooking class consisted of preparing at least 6 different dishes and 1 dessert. We did some chopping and had a mortar/pestal workout to make the base mixture we made for cooking. We taste tested each of our individual recipes before combining them for the lunch buffet. The chef/guide was very informative and quizzed us along the way about what we were learning about the ingredients and recipes during the class. We had 2 groups of only 3 couples each which was nice. We’re good cooks! Great way to spend the morning with your significant other and learn about popular Indonesian/Bali cooking ingredients and recipes! A must do when in Ubud!!Written 21 September 2023
- kathryne6510 contributionsGreat class in tranquil surroundingsReally enjoyable class in lovely tranquil rural surroundings a shot distance from the centre of Ubud. We practised 7 different recipes showcasing different cooking techniques. We would definitely recommend this class.Written 4 July 2023

- F4768JAdawnp0 contributionsNice afternoon outThe cooking class was good, but felt like a bit of a production line. There was 10 in our group and then another 12 people came in and went upstairs. Also the compound we did it in looked quite run down and messy, which I found odd as we have stayed in many compounds and they are spotless . Our host was good but I have done other cooking classes in Bali and we are more hands on . However this cooking did involve a lot of there village to help with preparation and cooking. I liked that we could take bake food to our guest house to share with others . I don’t think any Bali experience can be bad.Written 28 May 2023
- K2315ZGedithr0 contributionsHighly recommend for a local cooking experienceThis was a great cooking class with locals that t share their spices and styles of Balinese cooking. Our driver and helper Tata was super sweet and helpful. I really enjoyed the experience of learning from this family. You will be cooking in a local Balinese home, which was an awesome experience with a beautiful view of the palm trees and all the green surrounding Ubud. I would highly recommend this cooking class.Written 25 April 2023

We started off the morning being picked up from our villa and driven to a produce market where we got to see the fresh ingredients we would be cooking with.
Then we were driven to the location of the class where we started by doing a traditional Balinese offering.
We then created the basis for all of the dishes - the famous Balinese sauce as well as a peanut sauce. This was followed by creating several dishes over the course of an hour and a half after which we got to enjoy the fruits of our labour which were all delicious - particularly the Satay Chicken. We got a copy of the recipes at the end which I am sure we will be trying out when we get back home.
All in all, a very fun day learning about Balinese food and customs - would highly recommend to all.
Just a note however, make sure you have Whatsapp installed as we had to contact the operator to arrange the pickup

100% would recommend this to anyone interested in the local Balinese food. The driver and guide were great, and then the setup for the cooking class was perfect as they help to prepare all the ingredients and clean around you as you go through. It didn’t seem possible that we could make 9 recipes in just a couple of hours, but we did and enjoyed every single one.

This cooking class was great for all abilities. I am someone who loves to cook and prides myself on my ability that I have picked up. My girlfriend on the other hand… ‘If I speak I’m in big trouble’ 🤣. But both of us loved this! We were shown step by step how to make the dishes with all the others on the course. I feel as though I was able to pick up skills from the teacher and implement some of my own which was nice! We both made some great food, some stuff that I would definitely eat and some that I wouldn’t but was great to try and may have changed my mind about them. We were all given copies of the recipes on our emails so we can keep cooking them which is a nice touch. Everyone was very friendly and included a pick up and drop off from our hotel. Overall the value for money is excellent and definitely recommend this activity for anyone no matter if you have never cooked or if you are a chef!

We booked the Balinese cookery class as a family of 4 with two teenagers. The whole experience was excellent from start to finish. The guide and chef, Wayan, explained the background to the ingredients used in Balinese cooking, the variations of ginger, use of candlenuts ( like macadamia)and mix of spices for each dish. We had a chance to taste a little of each dish we cooked and then saved the main part for the banquet at the end. Full marks for ensuring that my wife, who is a coeliac, could enjoy all of the food through the use of gf soya sauce and separating some of the dishes. What also struck me was the pride and enthusiasm that Wayan and the lovely family team who assisted us. Start to finish was 4/4.5 hours. Definitely worth booking.

On a whim, me and my husband booked this very nicely priced cooking class the day before. It exceeded all of our expectations. The hosts were very accommodating with pick-up and drop-off to and from our hotel.
We elected to do the morning class as it included a tour of a typical Balinese market. We got to experience first hand how the locals go about getting food for the day. We snacked on some food and took a tour before being transported to where the cooking class would take place.
Once at the cooking class, we met our very kind and gracious instructor. He took the time to walk us through all the ingredients we would be using throughout the class. He showed us the best way to utilize the ingredients and how to properly cut each vegetable. While he showed us what to do, the supporting workers ensured our stations were set up with clean cooking utensils prior to each of the 9 courses!
The instructor gave us plenty of time and support to prepare each meal and accommodated those with special food intolerances (there was a vegan in our group who prepared her own dishes and had them placed separately from ours).
After all 9 courses were complete, the food was organized in a buffet style and we got to enjoy all the hard work we had done!
This was such a wonderful experience and I suggest it to anyone visiting Bali!

The class was organized very well, with the market tour and rice village tour, my mom and I had a great time learning about Balinese dishes and cooking! We were able to personalize our dish with less salt and sweet soy sauce. The instructors was very kind about keeping our food separate from the rest of the group

Such an amazing experience, we couldn’t recommend it enough! We did the morning class and went to the local markets. Great service the whole day, Wayan and his family are full of knowledge about the both their food and culture. The food we cooked was unreal, we were also given a list of the ingredients so we can’t give it a shot later.

i would definitely recommend doing the morning cooking class. The man who ran the class firstly took us to the rice fields and explained how they are grown and then took us too the market where he showed us around whilst explaining the ingredients being used in our class. He was so lovely and accommodating asking us questions to try help us remember and asking us if we had any questions. The cooking itself was amazing we made 9 different dishes making everything from scratch. After we ate what we made and could take as much home as we wanted. The family who ran this class where lovely and shows a family side to cooking in Bali. Would 100% recommend!

Wonderful experience. Market trip, luwak coffee plantation and cooking traditional Balinese foods in a Balinese home. Drivers were prompt and friendly. Catered for vegetarians and no egg eaters with ease, very accommodating. Would recommend 👍

Hi. I am a solo traveller. I wanted to book the Subak cooking class in Ubud only to find the minimum default booking is two people. This seems unlikely, but i wasn't able to change the "2" to "1". I know there are other classes that allow a solo booking, but i wanted to book this particular one because the reviews are so good. Anyone else found this and a way round it?
Written 18 March 2024
Yes I noticed the same thing. I did the cooking class in January with my partner, originally she wanted to do it herself! Eventually I decided to join purely for the reason you outlined. It turned out that they set up the kitchen utensils and ingredients for a pair at each cooking station. Additionally the socialising/eating is a couples type of experience. I hope this makes sense.

Hi there. Do people use TripAdvisor to book? No reply on whatsapp. Website just says to email dates etc and "pay on paypal". I have never used PayPal before? Thanks

I used trip advisor to book and also took a long time to arrange pick up

Can some of the dishes be made gluten free (including no soy sauce)? We booked a class on the 19th under Dana Katz. Please let me know asap
Written 17 September 2023
That should be a question directed at the cooking school. You should hopefully have their WhatsApp number on your booking confirmation. Soy sauce is not used in all their recipes. Also one of the people in our group had a peanut allergy and they accommodated her.

Hi do you also cater for vegans on this cooking class?
Written 1 June 2023
Hi, you’ll cook almost 10 different dishes with the group, majority of them is based on vegetables, only few contains meat and eggs. You’ll be fine, trust me
