- johnhay21000 contributionsExceeded all our ExpectationsThe tour started off well, with Wayan turning up on time in a very clean and comfortable SUV. His English is excellent, both spoken and comprehension. This made him more than a driver. He suggested additional places we might visit, and his choice of establishments for our shopping stops was excellent. As a result, the shopping stops we did request were more like tours than being harassed by eager salespeople. Our dealings with Rio Bali Tours were equally pleasant - timely, polite and informative responses.Written 9 February 2025

- elsarahp20250 contributionsTrip with KetutKetut was an amazing driver and tour guide. Me and my friend told him we didn’t plan anything that day but go to Ubud. We asked for recommendations and he recommended the swing, luwak coffee, art market, and the waterfall. We went for 8 hours straight (it was actually more than that cuz he was nice and patient with us exploring things). It was traffic so he gave us extra time to explore. He was very nice to slow down and explain to us the traditions in Bali on our way. Like when we saw the cremation and the “Ogoh-Ogoh” and the daily offerings. I love how he answered our questions and he was so patient with us. He even asks if we want to do the recommended activities or if we liked the activity. And when we told him we didn’t have lunch yet, he recommended a great restaurant. It was a very fun day withWritten 8 February 2025

- ericdA7487TF0 contributionsGreat day and good valueWe had an absolutely wonderful experience with Rio as our driver during our trip to Ubud, Bali. He spent an incredible 10 hours with us, ensuring every moment of our journey was seamless and enjoyable. From the moment we met him, Rio was warm, friendly, and professional. As first-time visitors to Bali, we were incredibly grateful for his extensive knowledge of the island. He not only guided us through the best routes to Ubud but also shared fascinating insights about Balinese culture, history, and traditions along the way. Rio went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, whether it was stopping for photos at breathtaking viewpoints, recommending hidden gems, or patiently answering all of our questions about Bali. His dedication to making our experience special was truly remarkable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and driver. If you’re visiting Bali, we highly recommend Rio’s services – he turned what could have been a long drive into one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you, Rio, for an unforgettable day! - NorthStar256663873390 contributionsBali Jungle Swing - More Instagram Theater Than Authentic AdventureWhile swinging through the jungle with Mount Agung as your backdrop makes for stunning photos, this attraction is essentially an Instagram photo factory. The staff are experts at capturing those perfect social media shots, and yes, my photos turned out great. However, the experience feels manufactured and commercial rather than the authentic Balinese adventure some might expect. The whole setup is meticulously designed for social media content - from the multiple swing heights to the staged photo spots with nests and hearts. You'll move from one photo opportunity to the next like you're on a production line. While it's fun for what it is, don't expect any real jungle exploration or cultural experience. If you're after those iconic Bali swing shots for your social feed, you'll get them here. But if you're seeking authentic local experiences, your time might be better spent elsewhere in Bali's actual jungle or traditional villages. Worth doing if you love photography and social media content, but go in knowing it's exactly what it is - a photoshoot location rather than a true jungle experience.Written 31 December 2024

- Econoclast17850 contributionsExcellent experienceThe whole trip was as we had hoped for and as advertised. Driver ready and waiting for us, a comfortable car. We didn't know exactly what we wanted, so discussed with the driver some options and followed his advice. Very happy to have done so: he took us away from the most touristy areas, provided excellent and interesting commentary and got us back in time (just...) to our cruise ship. Highly recommended!Written 30 December 2024

Mr. Dewa was an excellent driver, spoke very good English and was great at communicating with us and with our hotel. We felt very well taken care of end-to-end. Our mountain guide was very patient with us and took so many photographs for us; he was very polite and hiked as quickly or as slowly as we wanted to hike. The path to the caldera was very crowded so I’m not sure how most people manage to see both the blue fire and the sunrise from the crater rim. My wife and I were maybe third or fourth to arrive at the caldera base but after lingering at the bottom for too long the path back to the rim became very congested with many bottlenecks slowing everyone down. Sunrise views were spectacular, with the turquoise lake in the foreground and several volcanoes in the background. Seeing the Bali countryside by car was an added plus. The home stay was as expected for level of accommodation; it was clean and comfortable and the host accommodated our vegetarian needs and late arrival.

Right from the start, the mountain itself is incredible and well worth a visit on its own. It can be a challenging climb in parts so be ready for that, but otherwise just spectacular in terms of the scenery. Our guide was also fantastic, he took some amazing photos for us and was able to tell us so much about the mountain and the surrounding area.
The homesite we stayed at was also lovely, and our hosts spoiled us with excellent local food. The sights on day 1 were nothing to complain about either, with a lakeside mountain temple and the twin lakes on our itinerary.
All of this was facilitated by our driver, who was a pleasure to spend the time with and really made sure we were looked after from start to finish.
The only possible downsides would be if you struggle with a lot of driving and/or long days, as this really is 2 full days on the go, and the ferry can really slow things down.

Ultimately, the blue flames of Ijen volcano lived up to the hype. Our driver, Gusti, was on time and picked us up right from our hotel. He made an unexpected stop at the Luwak Coffee which turned out to be amazing. The homestay accommodations were great for what we needed, a place to rest our heads for a few hours before the 2am hike start time. Our guide, Sherly, was very knowledgeable and amazing and very willing to take pictures. The blue flames from the high surfer content, one of two volcanoes that produce these in the world were definitely the highlight. The hike down to the flame location could be difficult for some. The hike out with a stop towards the top of the volcano for the sunrise was a close second to the blue flames, we got some amazing pictures. Our only disadvantage was the distance from our hotel to the volcano. The ride to and from was tough at times with all the traffic, Gusti, was more than willing to make a stop or two to accommodate our needs. All in all I would highly recommend this volcano hike, it made for an amazing experience and created memories that will last a lifetime.

We, my girlfriend and I, did this trip with a local guide and driver called Dewa.
Overall I need to say it was really worth it even though it is not cheap.
From the start on the experience was very good. Dewa is an extremely friendly and polite local how speaks a good english and is very knowledgeable.
He picked us up very punctually in the very south of Bali (other side of were we wanted to go) at the time we agreed with him two days before. The bus he uses it modern, very clean and comfortable. He also provided us cool water during the ride up to the north. In addition he planned the journey that we had enough time to also stop were ever we wanted to visit some sight like the monkey forest, etc. were told us a couple of interesting things about before we did the visit (he was waiting for us outside). So our ride was more like a guided and highly individualized tour! Important to mention for such a long ride together in the car is that Dewa was very empathic in terms of our eagerness to talk. So he felt when we were tired and just wanted to sleep or look out of the window. For us it was a very pleasant ride also from a communication‘s perspective. After we have crossed over to Java we went for dinner in a local restaurant which was tasty and gave a good feeling for the local everyday life.
Once we arrived at the bungalow style hotel at the foot of mount Ijen at around 8pm we were able to sleep until 12:30am. After that Dewa drove us to the base camp (approx. 30min) were a local guide picked us up and guided us up to the mountain and down to the blue fire. (Approx. 4h) After that we took another 30min hike to get to a very nice view point to watch the sunrise and enjoy an incredible view on the lake at the inside of the volcano.
After arriving at the base camp again Dewa drove us back to the bungalow were we took a shower and had breakfast before he took us back to our hotel in Ubud.
Summing up it is definitely worth to visit mount Ijen and we would do it again via trip advisor. The money was well spend because of the very comfortable and efficiently organized trip and our super friendly, caring and knowledgeable guide Dewa (and safe driving, we always felt save).
For this 2-day trip (one night) was perfectly fitting into our travel plans and allowed us to experience a little bit of Java which would have taken us 3 or 4 days and a lot of planning if we had to organize it on our own.
Clear recommendation even though I don‘t know about the other tour guides. But maybe you can ask if Dewa is available when you book.
Cheers from Bali

Highly recommend booking this trip. Everything is planned and you simply show up. Our driver, Dewa, messaged us beforehand to confirm pickup time and location. The coffee/hidden swing was part of the trip— we were able to buy coffee as souvenirs. As listed, lunch, dinner, and breakfast was provided. The homestay in Java was so clean and the people were so pleasant. The next morning, the person at the homestay drove us to Mt Ijen, and we met with a tour guide who trekked with us. Gas masks were indeed provided. This tour guide took the best photos and took us to see the best view of the crater. The Mt Ijen hike is very steep. The tour guide held a flashlight, but you can bring your own headlamp if preferred. We were not able to see the blue flames at the time, but the view at the top was still well worth it. There will be hundreds of others trekking as well. Do not be discouraged if you are unsure of your physical capabilities— there will be taxis on the side for a fee. Men will be standing to the side ready to pull you up or down. We came back to the homestay and enjoyed homemade nasi goreng. Those at the homestay were so sweet and kind. Dewa, our driver answered all our questions and made many accommodations for us. He made extra stops for us to see waterfalls, the chocolate factory, and multiple fruit stands! Expert driving! Thank you for a great time, Dewa!!!!

We had a great experience on this tour. One of the reasons we chose this option is that it leaves earlier but includes a homestay near the start of the hike so that you can sleep before getting started on your climb. Other tours left Bali in the evening and you hike right after arriving. The homestay was just what we needed and we had a good 5 hours of rest before heading to the trailhead. That extra sleep was valuable for us.
We chose to leave at 11am and do the temple and photo stop. We were ambivalent about those, so you might just want to choose to leave at 2pm and skip those stops.
The hike for us middle aged folks was intense but doable. The trail up to the crater is wide and well kept but STEEP. We went at our own pace and our guide, Sherly, was cool with that. The only downside of going slowly was when we got down to the crater to see the blue flames it was a bit crowded. We then hiked up to see the sunrise and it was stunning... Even more than the blue flames. Shirley got some great photos of us and shared them.
Forehead lights and masks are included, but we paid 50,000 each at the supply station to rent hiking poles too. Our driver, Heru, was a great gentleman and got us there safely and cautiously. This excursion was definitely worth it!

Ijen volcano is a challenging but rewarding hike with amazing views, blue fire, and sunrise.
The travel time is 8 hours, and the climb takes about 4-5 hours including the way back. The hike is steep and strenuous, but the scenery is stunning. The trail winds through lush rainforests and past sulfurous lake.
We didn't see the blue fire ourselves because of the too much dangerous smoke, but our guide filmed it for us on our phone. It was still a magical experience to be in the crater of the volcano in the darkness.
The sunrise from the top of the volcano was also breathtaking. The sky was filled with vibrant colors, and the volcano cast a shadow over the landscape. It was a truly unforgettable experience.
If you are looking for a challenging but rewarding hike, Ijen volcano is definitely worth considering. Just be sure to be prepared for the long journey and the steep climb, and to wear a gas mask to protect yourself from the sulfuric gases.

This was an amazing and extraordinary experience. The driver collected us and drove us across Bali via the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple and had an excellent lunch nearby. The driver (GD) was friendly and had good English.
Onward to the ferry to Java and then a 40 minute drive to the accommodation where we had dinner and a short sleep. We then departed the accommodation at 0100 to the the start of the hike.
At 0200 we departed with our local guide. The hike demands a reasonable level of fitness, but they can “carry” you in a barrow, as far as the rim of the crater. To get to see the blue flames you have to climb/scramble down about 180m which requires some agility, after this you have to climb up again. Be aware that there are normally a large number of people doing this hike.
This was a fantastic experience and well worth the effort. There was a problem with our booking that was rapidly fixed by Rio Bali Tours (they admitted that it was their problem) and fixed it very quickly - full marks! The drivers English was good. A wonderful trip that we shall never forget.

This was brilliant. Incredible views on Mt. Ijen and an unreal experience overall. The whole process was always smooth. No admin as Rio had taken care of everything. Transport to and from Bali, ferry ride, overnight stay, breakfast and dinner and tour guide on Mt. Ijen. Gusti, who was our personal guide throughout the tour, was brilliant. Patient and so helpful. I would definitely recommend them. I know I'll be using them again if and when I go back to Bali.

Is the crater still closed to the public? I read that it was closed by the government temporarily on July 12th 2024.

What are the temperatures during the tour? Is a jumper and long jogging pants enough?

Hi,
What are the pickup time and the time when the tour generally finishes back? This is assuming we leave from Bali.

Hi I am confuse with the pickup time. Can I be sure that on the booking day that I select, the pickup time is 2am or 2pm from our accommodation?
Thanks.

Are you guys willing to pickup and drop off at Sukawati, Bali for tour? I would like to do a tour in early August but I see my reserved hotel location is not mentioned in your list of pickup locations.

Hi, how can I get there from Seminyak? I wish to travel there on Oct 17 or 18. After the crater tour, I wish to dive at Menjangan in west Bali for two days, before returning to Seminyak.
Thanks,
Chris, Melbourne.

I have now hired a private car to drive from Seminyak to Permuteran near Menjangan via Balijungletrekking. I will then do what I stated above. If anyone wants to join me, the drive cost to Permuteran will reduce.
I will either leave at 10 am on the morning of Oct 16 to take in the scenery along the way, or at 6 pm that night to save costs, and avoid the need to go to Permuteran first. I haven't decided yet.
Balitrekking can advise you of the return time the next day.
Hopefully this helps.
Chris
