- The recommendations of our tour guides: We are always eager to make sure our guests have a wonderful time while participating on our tours. Organizing private and small group tours allows us to be flexible with time and always have opportunities for breaks. Usually, we arrive to Bran around mid-day and after visiting Bran castle our guests can have some free time on the premises and nearby the castle grounds for lunch, shopping or photographing the area. In the Tea House, a small restaurant in the castle’s courtyard one can try the Funeral cake, a porridge like dessert with walnuts, raisins, rom and much more. In Romanian called Coliva the funeral cake usually is served at funerals and commemoration of deceased loved ones. It goes well with a good coffee or tea. Nearby the castle entrance a small souvenir market is located, our favorite stall is selling traditional masks and handcrafted objects and textiles. Please ask your guide to point it out to you! Our guests have the option to decide to have a proper sit-down meal or something quick on the move. The same market has food stalls, one of the most popular ones sells Romanian Hot Dogs (local sausage sandwiches) and Hanul Bran restaurant offers a large choice of tasty Romanian cuisine.

The walk was mostly relaxed, though there were some steep sections, especially on the way down. I'd recommend wearing boots or proper walking shoes.Written 24 September 2024
- Tour3637310 contributionsTransfagarsan Highway TripFantastic trip and highly recommend this trip. I travelled alone. Dan, my guide and driver was superb. Collected me on time from my hotel. Safe, professional guide and driver. Conversed well along the way and entertained me with his fabulous singing. Dan bought fresh bread just before we left Braşov and he shared his homemade lunch with me. It’s a long day and I was tired at the end of the day, but Dan remained energetic and motivated. Definitely a very worthwhile trip to make. The highlight of my trip to Romania.Written 17 September 2024
- jillye20190 contributionsAmazing Expereince! We had a fantastic trip with Alex our guide who was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Clear instructions about where to meet. Despite a minor glitch with transport at the beginning of our trip, Alex made the bear watching experience incredibly interesting, sharing facts and stories about the bears. There was a group of 10 of us and we spent a couple of hours in the hide and saw 2 bears - an adult make and a young male. Alex had also brought binoculars with him so we could observe the bears more closely. An awesome trip and one we would 100% recommend. Thanks so much Active Travel and Alex.Written 16 September 2024

- GarryUK0 contributionsBeautiful villages, churches and fortifications. Lots of climbing on uneven surfaces. The sights are wonderful but be prepared for lots of uneven surfaces and stairs. Difficult when it is a very wet day so good waterproofs and sturdy shoes are a must. Our guide was very informative on the history of places but less so on the timetable of the day. As there were only three of us on the tour so it was by car. Tour guide he was very accommodating and flexible at the sights. Viscri church is lovely but under construction. Sighisoara is beautiful.Written 11 September 2024

And our experienced guide Bogdan has been quite a discovery! He’s a great person with extensive knowledge about mountaineering, adventure sports, survival, and the history of Romania. The journey was very enjoyable, and the day went by so quickly! And that’s despite us having taken over 30,000 steps, haha. The mealtime was delicious and very rejuvenating.Written 2 September 2024
- Larissa S0 contributionsAmazing Hiking Experience in Piatra CraiuluiI recently had the privilege of hiking through the stunning Piatra Craiului mountains, and I cannot recommend our guide, Mihai, enough! From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the area, sharing fascinating insights into the local environment, scenery, wildlife, and old legends. Mihai knew the trails very well, ensuring the group always felt safe, even on the more challenging paths. He also made sure everyone was comfortable with the hiking pace. I would highly recommend taking this hiking tour!Written 29 August 2024
- chelseagI3067IG0 contributionsIncredible Hiking ExperienceMy friends and I booked a private tour with Active Travel, had the most wonderful experience with Marian, our guide. He was absolutely accommodating in every way and chose two locations that were perfect for us. The scenery was breathtaking, and Marian was so knowledgeable, and shared so many interesting stories and historical facts with us. After our hike we finished up having lunch in a guest house which was arranged by Marian, and everything was perfect. Marian spoke with so much love and passion for the Carpathian’s and Romania, and is an advocate for ecotourism which we found inspiring. We recommend Active Travel and will def be back to Romania to book with them again.Written 29 August 2024

- 571suzanam0 contributionsA Wonderful Day Trip in the Heart of Transylvania with our Wonderful Guide, Charlie!A wonderful day trip in the heart of Transylvania, with our wonderful guide, Charlie. On our recent day trip to the enchanting sites of Cetatea Rupea, Sighișoara and Viscri,we were fortunate to have an exceptional tour guide, Charlie, whose passion for the region enhanced our experience. From the moment we met him,it was clear we were in good hands. With a warm welcoming,he gave us a brief overview of the day's itinerary. His enthusiasm was catchy, setting a positive tone for the adventure ahead. As we made our way to Cetatea Rupea, Charlie shared fascinating historical insights about the fortress. He told us stories of the site's medieval significance, its strategic importance in the region and the various cultures that influenced its architecture. The panoramic view from the majestic fortress was magical, with rolling hills, stretching as far as the eye could see. Next,we ventured to the enchanting town of Sighișoara,a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its cobblestone streets and colourful buildings,it felt like stepping into a fairy tale.Charlie, expertly led us through the narrow alleys always giving us pertinent information about everything that was worth being mentioned about the sites that we visited on our wonderful trip. Our final destination was the picturesque village of Viscri, very famous for its traditional Saxon heritage. The thatched roof houses and serene countryside provided a perfect backdrop for reflection. By the end of the day,we have not only explored breathtaking sites, but also forged a bond with our guide and eachother. If you wish to experience the heart of Transylvania through the eyes of a passionate storyteller, Charlie is the guide you need, and not only a guide, but a very good driver! He turned a day trip into a journey of the heart and mind!Written 25 August 2024

I booked 2 tours with Active Travel during June 2021 after the pandemic and could not be happier. From the attention I received when contacting the operator by whatsapp I knew I was in good hands. One of the most important elements when booking a tour is the guide. My guide was Tiberiu and he did an amazing job.I was just expecting a normal tour but got immersed into the lives and day a day of medieval Romanians by his expertise in such a way that the tour was much more than that: it was an experience that made me learn quite a lot and understand many things for example in Sibiu I got to learn the importance of guilds to the city, and in Rasnov I learnt lots of war tactics for defending a fortress; finally in Bran Castle I understood how the legend of Dracula came to be after a series of historical coincidences and how Bran castle has so much more history and how this castle is something real with centuries of historical events and not made to attract tourists just for vampire hunting. I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed Transylvania was my experience with Active Travel

Our group of five was lucky to have our guide, Tiberiu Simon from Active Travel in Brasov, all to ourselves for a leisurely day of touring Peles and Bran Castles in the Transylvania region of Romania.
He knew his Romanian history and obviously enjoyed sharing it with travelers like us, letting us set the pace of where we wanted to linger or when were ready to move on.
While Tiberiu shared plenty of facts, figures, names and dates about both Castles, he wrapped them around interesting stories about people and events to make them more memorable.
He also knew as much about art as history and could answer any question about furnishings, carvings, armor, murals and portraits.
Tiberiu scouted the best places to stop for pictures and took group shots for us, sharing them immediately while it was fresh on our minds.
He blended easily into our group and joined us for lunch, suggesting local dishes to try like hearty soups, polenta (like corn mush with fried egg and sour cream) and various meat entrees from sausage to mutton.
After our tour of Bran Castle, Tiberiu treated us to “Kurtoskalacs,” a cylinder cake roasted on a spit, sold warm from street carts. It was so tasty, I could eat this three times a day. Sadly, it’s found only in the Transylvania region we were visiting.
Our day trip was one of the highlights of our visit to Romania thanks to Tiberiu Simon who introduced us to the people, places and culture of the Transylvania region and made it so wonderfully personal and memorable for us.

Hi!
It was a fun and interesting experience, just like my other tours with this company in prior years, so I keep coming back!
Tiberius was professional, kind, knowledgeable and a careful and attentive driver. He made an effort to make the tour interesting to a diverse group, from me with my strong interest in Romanian history to the nice, young parents with just general curiosity, to the two young children. We traveled in a clean, comfortable VW minivan.
Tiberius did a good job steering us around the crowds of tourists at both castles, and avoiding the insane traffic on the Bucharest road. He checked frequently to see if anyone was hungry, needed the bathroom, or wanted coffee -- which, as a coffee addict, I particularly appreciated. He recommended a nice place for an optional lunch stop, and it was reasonably priced with good food and good service.
I was delighted to spend the day at two castles and a quick survey of Rasnov and of course I would gladly return to Peles and Rasnov... for a third time. Bran Castle has, sadly, become overrun with tourists so if you go, I recommend a weekday. Tiberius is skilled at getting you through the swarms of tourists and wont lose you, but it is absolutely jammed inside Bran at some places.
Don't miss Peles and please choose the additional upstairs visit to the royal apartments. It is much, much less crowded than below, and more interesting, in particular the opportunity to see Queen Maria's beautiful crown that I have long admired and had no idea has just arrived at Peleş! Tiberius is conversant with all the relevant history and is very informative on the life, goals and personality of King Carol I.
Although the interior of Rasnov Fortress is under renovation, Tiberius was able to make a quick circuit of the fortifications worth the stop. He can describe siege warfare znd Saxon social organization knowledgeable.
His English is flawless anc colloquial.

We took one day trip to Rasnov and Bran Castle the guide Mr Tiberiu Simon was extremely helpful and made the trip an unforgettable one. Flexible in pick up locations, extremely knowledgeable about the history of the sites and said it like a story and attracted our attentions to every single detail. He also guided us on where best to take photos and recommended a very decent place to have lunch after the trip. I could not expect more from the agency or the guide.

Without having many expectations for our journey into and around the Carpathian Mountains, Karol Balazs ensured we had a day we will never forget.
Our trip visiting Transylvania's famous castles was only as amazing as it was due to our great tour guide and his friendly personal experience that made the day so easy to enjoy.
Whether ensuring we were comfortable, informed or simply causing us to laugh, Karol made our time in Central Romania a day we will continue to talk about. Extremely fairly priced for the quality of the tour and by the end of the day we felt we were not leaving a tour guide behind, but a new friend.
Thank you activetravel and in particular your staff member, Karol Balazs.
The best tour guide experience we have ever done, hands down.

TLDR; I would recommend not to choose this trip.
Trip is advertise as Bran Castel and Rasnov Fortress, with optional Peles Castle. Guess what? Rasnov Fortress is currently closed. We only get uphill and see it from outside :/ Oh and we have to pay just to get there: 30 lei for gondola/cart. That was not advertise in the trip description. For main attraction, Bran Castle we arrive in the afternoon, so the busiest time of the day. It was overcrowded and really hard to even hear our guide. After visiting the castle we asked about lunch break, and we heard that restaurant will take too much time, so we just grab some fast food from local stand and tried to find a table, but there was not enough space, so some of us have to eat standing in the sun with plate in their hands. We also lost about 40 min after Peles Castle for toailet break. It was weird because all part members were ready after 10-15 mins so we just sit there for no reason. Although there was an information about entry fees being excluded, I am finding it weird, because each attraction was 30-70 lei, which bump up the price for around 28$ per person. Over 102$ for this tour seems like turist trap for me. One more thing about the price: if you book solo as first person, you will see price double as they want you to cover cost of the trip. When I switch to 2 people, price increase only by 12$. That is REALLY confusing and my make some of us to rethink buying the ticket. I was told that if you buy for this double price, and more people will join, you will get a refund, to much regular price. Now few words about our Guide. Tiberiu speak good english, and only few times we have problem understanding each other. He seems knowledgable, but he did some mistakes describing weapons. Then again I am not expecting this type of detailed knowledge. I only wish we had a little better plan, and arrive to Bran Castle first to avoid the crowds. I think I would enjoy this trip if not for such a massive price, lunch in actual restaurant where we could escape from heat for a minute, and if we could actually enter last attraction. I hope this review will help some fellow travellers to decide if this trip is worth their money. Cheers!

We can understand your frustration but it is not our fault that when you booked the tour, you did not read, at all, about what it is included and not included and about the info that Rasnov Fortress in closed for renovations (as proven to you with the print screen provided on your request). What we can not accept is for you to spread false information. For example this tour HAS NO solo traveler rate - as 1 person (and you were 2) - you pay the same rate as for 2 or more people - 68 euro/person. Anyhow, you were right, it was very hot and crowded (due to weekend time) and this probably affected your experience. Have a good day!

Charlie was an amazing guide, he made our trip to Brasov the best experience we could ever expect! It was like a short trip with a friend that knows all about the history of the place that you are visiting. We would certainly recommend it to anyone that has any doubt about booking this guided tour. Thanks again for it all!

A fun day out exploring the 3 castles around Brasov. I'm not a massive history buff but found the tour very interesting and easy to follow. The trip also included the entrance fees which meant we could bypass the long queues waiting as well.
Could not have asked for a better tour guide in Charlie - incredible understanding of the history and tailored it to all of us on the tour, not to mention a great sense of humour. We bumped into another group lead by Tiberius doing the same tour and for part of it they worked together taking both groups around the same part of the castle. I don't think the trip would have been anywhere near as good or enjoyable without those guys. I would 100% book through these guys again.
Could not have asked for a better tour guide in Charlie - incredible understanding of the history and tailored it to all of us on the tour, not to mention a great sense of humour. It was an amazing day! The drivers and vehicles arrived on time and were quickly able to fix a misunderstanding on a booking (thanks Charlie and Dan!). The vehicles were comfortable and clean. Our guide, Dan, was just great. His knowledge of history, of the places we visited and saw along the way, was extensive and interesting. He could answer any question and told us a lot about Romanian life and recent history as well. He went out of his way to make sure we had coffee, toilet stops and tastes of some traditional pastries. The scenery was spectacular. Everything was well organised and on time. We would do this again, and additional tours as well, if we every come back to this gorgeous part of the world!

We thank you so much for your detailed review about our Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress Tour from Brasov with Optional Peles Castle Visit, Simone! We are so happy we solved your misunderstanding: you booked the 3 Castles tour, but you wanted to do the 2 Castles tour. You are welcome regarding the partial refund I have made.

I booked this on the Friday for Saturday so it was a last minute decision and I’m so glad I did. Dan was the perfect guide. He was very considerate to our whole group, nothing was any trouble and he was very knowledgeable so it was a fantastic day out.
The benefits of doing this trip rather than going on your own are:
* Cost…great value and much cheaper if you tried to get there any other way.
* The craic and chat when travelling to the sites and Dan pointed out many interesting facts.
* Queue jumping as the guide is known at the sites so just goes right to the front.
* The knowledge is second to none and having the experience at each location (we did Pele’s too) was great. Many times I could see independent travellers listening to our guide as he was very informed.
* Hacks for best places to park, eat, toilets etc.
All in all, we had a fun day and I learnt a lot. Thank you, Dan.

Hello. Is it possible to do the Bran/Rasnov tour starting in the afternoon, versus 8:30 AM? We are getting in to Brasov late morning (on a Friday)
Written 19 February 2020
Hey I cant answer your question...but we are also arriving late morning, on Saturday 29th February (different day to you), by train from Bucharest. I know that Bran castle closes at 4pm in winter, but we would be arriving just before noon.....two questions for the price of one!

Confused about how long this tour is when including Peles castle. Is it four hours or a day-long? Trying to plan ahead. Thanks
Written 17 February 2020
The Peles Castle tour alone takes about 4 hours. However, if you combine Bran Castle and Rasnov Fortress to it, it takes more or less a full day!

Hola me gustaria saber si es en castellano y si es con el castillo de peles cuanto tiempo es en total del dia? Y la recogida es en el hotel o en un punto de encuentro ?
Gracias

Is there time during this tour to do the time tunnel while there? (I understand the cost of tickets are excluded.)

I guess that depends on the guide you are with. I'm pretty sure that if you ask for the guide we had you'll manage it too as he was very flexible. He asked us several times how we wanted to spend the time and we had ample time for dining and doing an extra detour here and there. Traffic might be another factor though unless you're travelling in low season.
