About
This is a walking tour of Split with a local historian! Your guide Toni, the owner of Dioclespot Tours, will walk you through Split's center and explain its complex history and culture - from ancient Rome and Diocletian's Palace to modern times! This tour was ranked 2nd best travel experience in Croatia in 2023 and it was placed in the top 1% of all experiences in the world! Toni has a Master's degree in history, so he can provide much more knowledge than what is learned in a tour guide course. Also, Toni is a local, born and still living in Split! He combines that with the expertise and education gained as a teacher to make his tours a true learning experience! Toni speaks fluent English and enforces dialogue as much as possible during the tour since it provides much more personal contact with the guide and it's easier and more enjoyable to learn that way. He will present you with 3D reconstructions of the sites visited, which are a result of Toni's own work and dedication!

Start:
  • Obala Hrvatskog narodnog preporoda 22, 21000, Split, Croatia
Brass Gate of Diocletian's Palace (also called Bronze Gate). That is the southern seaside entrance from the Promenade (Riva) into the Cellars of Diocletian's Palace. It is a small entrance into the Palace Walls, next to the 'Gentile' coffee bar. The guide holds a sign 'Magister of History'
End:
  • Narodni trg, 21000, Split, Croatia
This is the main square of Split and I find it the best ending point since it's easy to orientate from there. It's also called Piazza square (Pjaca).

Toni is a very responsive guide
When I found this tour, I was disappointed to learn that its start time was before our ship came in. I reached out to Toni and he got right back to me stating he would change the start time of the tour.

Highlight of my stay in Split, Croatia
Our tour in Diocletian's palace was so wonderful, all because of our tour guide and historian, Toni. He presented information with clarity and relevance. I look at Diocletian's palace with a new perspective now. I value the knowledge I gained. The two hours went by so quickly as it was so enjoyable.

Fantastic tour of Split with Toni
Our guide, Toni, was passionate, knowledgeable and engaging. Split is rich with history and Toni was able to capture it tremendously. He was a great story teller, was able to personalize the tour, encouraged conversation, and provided us with a wonderful afternoon.

Fantastic and Informative Tour of Split
Toni was an excellent and informative guide. There's history all around you in Split, and walking with someone who truly knows the city and how to show you that history is a fantastic experience. We learned lots about Split's history and about Croatian history and culture in general. I highly recommend touring the city with Toni!

    Great!
Toni is great guide and a very pleasant person. We mixed up the dates of our tour, but Toni kindly agreed to accommodate us on a very short notice and gave us an excellent tour of the Diocletian Palace. Highly recommend Toni as your guide to Split!

Best Private Historical Tour of Diocletians Palace
Toni was extremely knowledgeable about the History of Split and Diocletians Palace. Don’t want to include any spoilers but be prepared for some extremely interesting facts! (Including popular myths debunked) Would highly recommend him to anyone who loves Roman and Medieval history, architecture, and art history. Toni happily answered all of our questions including best beaches, best Konobas, and much more! If you’re a Game of Thrones nerd who can ignore season 8 like me, definitely take this tour to see some cool filming locations. 😃

    Simple The Best
We booked a private tour of the Palace and it was the best thing we did. Started early, 0900, as recommended by Toni, and it paid to beat the crowds. Toni was simply excellent and brought the City to life through the ages. The tour was well paced not rushed at all and although advertised at around 2 hours Toni gave us 3 hours of his time and the more you asked the more he was willing to share. Forget the big group tours and choose Toni you won’t be disappointed. Just excellent 5 star.

Toni gave us a thorough history lesson about Split and Croatia and even added some details about what life was like for him growing up here. He was born and raised in Split and remembers playing inside the walls of Old Town. He shared how different it is today. It was clear he has a wealth of knowledge about history. He also showed us some renderings he created and showed on his iPad of what the Old Town was supposed to look like.

He was professional and courteous and friendly. We really enjoyed his tour. He did a great job of keeping us out of the sun most of the time and made sure we could hear what he was saying.

We had a nice size of 8 adults in the group. I think young kids under 10 might be a little bored, although, he does tailor his information according to your level of knowledge of history.

We've gone on many walking tours on our city breaks and this tour experience was as good as any of them.
We went on an evening tour (6pm) which gave us the benefit of less crowds (as the cruise ship groups were gone) and the temperature was cooler.
Toni was excellent - one of the best guides we've had.
Any question could be asked - either about history or Split/Croatia in general.
Would not hesitate to recommend Toni - all in all an excellent tour.

Toni was a knowledgeable and welcoming host, who gave a tour that was historically in-depth and still felt very personal. He brought his own visual renderings of Diocleatian Palace to show us, and was very happy to answer any questions about both the history and the culture of Split, and Croatia at large. I'd highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Split as it's a great way to see the city and learn about the history and culture.

We had an excellent tour guide (Toni) who made the palace come to life. Excellent communicator and storyteller ! He was well informed and very clear in explaining what was important to know. I highly recommend going on this short but worth every Euro tour🤗 - We had time to then explore on our own and build from his historical explanations.

This is was a fantastic tour. Toni is one of the best tour guides I have ever had, and I love guided tours. Sometimes you have tour guides who really just stick to a script or program and don’t have the educational background to answer all your detailed questions, and sometimes you get the other side of the spectrum where the guide isn’t organized enough and doesn’t present the information in a digestible way. Toni hit the sweet spot. He was able to indulge all our historical curiosities, going into details about Diocletian’s background, fun facts about each of the buildings we were most interested in, and even some great information about the development of Split in modern times. Even though the tour was just two hours, we covered a ton of information and I feel like we came out smarter. Thank you Toni!!!!!

Thank you Tony for a fabulous insight into Split. It really brought the place to life! You were so engaging, informative and tailored the experience to your audience. It was no surprise you had a teaching background- our lads stayed engaged throughout (10,12,13 years).

I’d recommend this trip early on in your holiday in Split as it gives you a good overview and allows you the chance to visit sites/museums in more detail later on.

The trip runs 10 am and 6 pm daily. The 6pm is quieter as cruise ships leave as 5.30 pm, and the heat of the day is gone😉

A local guy, a local guide and genuine local knowledge 👏👍

I have been traveling now for over sixty years in hundreds of countries on every continent except Antarctica. I try whenever possible to schedule some sort of guided walking tour in each new city or area. For the most part these tours have been good. However, two weeks ago in Split, Croatia I had the most exceptional tour of my traveling life. The guide was Toni Sare, a young historian with an uncanny ability to organize and present material with extraordinary clarity in history, art, architecture, and culture. His English was flawless, his diction excellent and his personality was delightful. Every step was carefully planned, every question answered, and yet there was a spontaneity in the presentation that made it seem as though a good friend was simply sharing with me the pride and love he felt for his city and its culture. I cannot speak highly enough of this experience. Check him out tsare.guide@gmail.com

Toni was fantastic! You could feel his love for history and also we appreciated his honesty when it came to the true history of the city. He did not make it a show like some tour guides will do; he shared and showed the real insight into the history of the city. We did the 6 PM tour which was perfect as most of the cruise ships and daily tours had left the city so the streets and major landmarks were easily accessible. 10/10 recommend!

Toni is incredible! We took a tour with him after our friends raved. He clearly has a passion for history and has devoted himself to constantly improving his specialized knowledge in the area. He even learned a computer program so that he could create his own artist renderings of the area as it was originally structured--he is so humble about it too! But they're incredible! As you tour with Toni, you feel assured that you are getting a special slice of history that only a dedicated local can provide. He is also so kind and was willing to help us with getting directions, recommendations and anything else that we might have needed in the area. The tour was complete and helpful. highly recommend doing this tour with Toni!
