About
On 8 June 1856 a total of 194 people, descendants from the Bounty, arrived on Norfolk Island from Pitcairn Island aboard the Morayshire. This consisted of 40 men, 47 women, 54 boys, and 53 girls. They arrived in cold, wet blustery conditions. Few had ever been to sea before, They were seasick, homesick, and heartsick. The journey of 6,00 km / 3,700 miles took five weeks. They arrived to a recently abandoned penal settlement set aside for the ‘worst of the worst’ it was full of ghosts and memories. It was a large and frightening testimony of man’s inhumanity to man. The 1856 untold story will follow their journey in the World Heritage Listed Kingston area.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- westy540 contributionsMixed bag. Orientation tour very good. Progressive dinner - food good. one speaker good. Fish fry average. Our first tours were the airport pick-up and drop off at our accommodation followed by the half day orientation tour. Airport pick-up and drop off at our accommodation went well although we had to wait some time for some stragglers to find there way out of the terminal. Half day orientation tour was very informative and interesting and was focussed mainly on the historical sights around Kingston as well as a visit to St Barnabas Chapel. This tour finished with a morning tea in Baunti's offices. The second tour we did was the progressive dinner where our driver was the delightful Rachel. The three different courses (entree, main and dessert) were all very good. Unfortunately the same could not be said of our speakers. The first Robyn(?) Christian was excellent. She gave a very animated, humorous and alternative view of the Bounty mutiny. Very entertaining. Our main course speaker was a former whaler who decided not to speak about his experiences but show us models of boats and whales and talk in generalities. The last speaker had a very large house and excavation/building(?) business and just answered questions which to be fair, on his part, were in the most part things put by people on the tour who should already have known the answers. Nevertheless we didn't find him interesting, informative or really welcoming. The last tour was the fish fry which we self drove to. Unfortunately it had been raining off and on so we were housed in a number of tents in what appeared to be a paddock near the cliffs with views of the ocean. The seating area was poorly lit and very crowded - you had to stand up to let people in and out to get past you. The food though was plentiful and tasty. People were invited up for seconds. There was also a bar where you could purchase drinks, both soft and alcoholic. The entertainment was a singer who played guitar. He was good until he tried to sing songs that were well outside of his vocal range. The four young dancers were very good. Our friends went to a Fish Fry on the same night with Pine Tree tours and showed us the photos. Their setup appeared to be more permanent with more space for tables and seating. Similar food and entertainment, although they had more dancers.Written 8 October 2024
- juliemC6481JO0 contributionsInformation, gluten free food and entertaining. This was a great tour!! The Tahitian princess was entertaining and informative. The tea production was interesting and the bee keeper was amusing and fascinating. Thank you for providing gluten free food. This was one of the highlights of my trip and as well as being well fed I was able to buy souvenirs for myself, family and friends. Thank You :) JulieWritten 3 October 2024
- nikkisA1323BQ0 contributionsA must do for all travellers to the islandBrilliant. Brook was a fabulous guide and his knowledge and passion for the history was just amazing. I’m not a real history buff but I was really enjoying his commentary.Written 29 September 2024
- AnneK4250 contributionsBetter tour optionsWe didn’t expect to have so many guests. (About 30 in our group-2 buses)It seemed very rushed, and it would have been good if the format, once you arrived, had been better explained. The Hosts were serving 3 sessions that night. So ours started with nibbles and a sherry which was pleasant and plentiful. It felt awkward to sit at the pre-set dinner table knowing it was sort for the next course. The home where the main course was served, had a lovely garden but because of the change in the weather, we were seated on a decked area with cafe blinds and it was draughty. The meals of roast pork was n’t hot, but I understand it’s hard to get 30 hot meals out quickly. The last house the hosts, as all of them, were gracious and happy to share their stories-perhaps a bit too detailed - again it was draughty being outside and the desert, a slice of berry cheesecake was ok but not great. A nice enough evening but I think the both the hosts and guests could have been briefed better. As a visitor I wanted to know things like “how do you manage without basic foodstuffs?/. What about employment? What happens if you get sick? And so on. The hosts did a good job but I think a better description of the evening is warranted. We’ve loved our holiday on NI but wouldn’t do the Progressive Dinner again.Written 5 September 2024
- Q9132ETfionap0 contributionsArrived, Booked, Enjoyed!Beaut evening with a lovely long sunset. Ben played his guitar and sang some great tunes. Scrumptious "Fish Fry" enjoyed with yummy salads including 3 local dishes. Plenty to go around & we were invited back for seconds. Hosts looked after 60 guests and the Girls Dancing Topped Off the Night.Written 23 August 2024

- Flyer312294175400 contributionsFish Fry night with Bainti ToursFish Fry was a unique experience and the fish was well cooked and yum! Set in a paddock with gazebos, tables and chairs the scene was set for a casual night. Bongo the singer was great and so were the Polynesian dancers. Disappointed at least 1 drink was not included in the price given basic set-up. Unfortunately not a great sunset on our night at the location which would not be suitable if raining. Dress warmly for cool nights and winds. Still worthy of going along to try local dishes.Written 16 June 2024

- C5402QWyvonnel0 contributionsEnjoyableA good experience and very enlightening to see where so many great books were written by this amazing lady. Rebecca, Colleen and Ric's housekeeper, shared many interesting anecdotes about Colleen and the beautiful and unusual decor of the home.Written 16 May 2024

- zoemax0 contributionsDo not do this tourI wish I could write a positive review about fish fry but not one thing was positive It was an absolute joke The lady who was the host was SO rude and unfriendly We were squished into tables and could not move , couldn’t get out to get our food, couldn’t see the performers…. We were the last people “allowed “ to get our food, and I heard them say “we don’t have enough food left, we can’t give thtm very much” $90 and I went home hungry! Thr Tahitian dancers… pathetic, couldn’t see because so dark and we couldn’t turn to earth them No tea or coffee ….. To top it off, my mother who is not able bodied , we had to get to our car and it was pitch dark and uneven ground I can give an honest review as I have done the Pinetree tour fish fry and I would give that 100% Baunti tours fish fry I would give 0% Not one positive experienceWritten 6 May 2024
- Connector7247610 contributionsNorfolk Island history presented with a touch of humor and a good dinner.A wonderful evening. The two commandants and Miss Clair Voiant kept us entertained as they told us about their past in the 1800's and threw in a few jokes to add to the already happy evening. Soup, roast pork & vegies with pasta & rice and finished with sticky date pudding & ice-cream was a most enjoyable dinner. The venue was pleasant with adequate room for the actors to move around the tables and sit with the audience. If you love Norfolk Island history, a few smutty jokes and a good meal then it's a must. I enjoyed the evening.Written 2 May 2024
- Virginia M0 contributionsGreat selection of toursI actually did several tours with this group, but I wasn’t given the option to choose various. The staff, from drivers to office staff are all good. Each time I was with them for a tour, I couldn’t fault the great knowledge and assistance. Only one disappointment was when I was dropped at my accommodation from the airport. The driver wouldn’t drive into the property, so I had to awkwardly get my luggage up an incline. But as far as tours go, they were very good. The Convicts tour is perfect to learn the history of the island.Written 29 April 2024
- Sarah H0 contributionsVegetarian catered for - local foodI enjoyed listening to the personal stories of the locals and appreciated learning some of their personal history and allowing us to have a peek into their lives. We requested vegetarian food and this was catered for without hesitation. Duration was 2 hours yet it flew by as we travelled to three peoples homes who were gracious enough to answer all our questions about their lives on Norfolk - Medicare, to the roaming cows on the streets, and chickens that walked freely- all our questions answered. One was a whaler in his younger years, pne was a volunteer ambulance medic and the last lived on Pitcairn island - all had intriguing and unique stories to share. The dinner table that we sat at for the main was stunning - a slice of Norfolk Island pine big enough to seat 30 people The food was homemade, so don’t expect gourmet restaurant food, but it was made with care and love. Entree was a hearty vegetable soup, main was lentils with mash potato with beans/peas and dessert was a delicious chocolate and coconut sliceWritten 27 April 2024

The entire tour is conducted at night via one of the Baunti buses, with the subjects being lit up from floodlights on the bus. Many, many totally unknown facts about the early island (unknown to me anyway) are related on the tour, including the fact that some of the houses on Quality Row were burnt down in a protest against the NSW government in the early 1900's. This is a new, but well presented, most worthwhile tour. Lots to be learned from it.

Dear John M, We are delighted that you got to learn more our our history. We invented this new tour as we felt there was a gap with the Pitcairn descendants history. So now the "Untold Story ....is told."

A journey back in time. Climb around the tour bus in Burnt Pine settlement and travel down to Kingston where you will here the stories of arrival of the Pitcairn people on Norfolk Island in 1856 - their experiences, what happened when the arrived and the first few years of their lives in a new home.
Norfolk Island is full of history and this gives an excellent insight in the beginnings of the current settlement - not to be missed if you are a history buff or what to understand the place of Norfolk Island in today's world and the shaping of the culture of Norfolk Island.
Well worth the hour.

This was a wonderful experience. Very fitting to the rather mournful theme which allowed reflection of how the Pitcairners lived and the difficulties they faced.
