San Blas is very beautiful, and finally I had a lovely time. However you have to be prepared that things will just happen according to the understanding of local indigenous community, not as on train schedule in Switzerland. You don't know where you will be going and when, you are just told a short while before: now we go to a different island or now we do the tour (possibly not the same island as in tour description and not on the same day). In the final accounting, all islands very beautiful and all tours were fun. So if you can relax and just let things happen, you will have good time. But if you need to be in control of everything and be informed at all times, this may not be for you.
The lodgings and food are rather basic (but I did get my lobster dinner). Think toilet on the other end of the island, or at least over the yard. The facilities were nevertheless impeccably clean.
According to tour description, a drink should have been included with lunch and dinner, but the local providers did not think so – just as well that I had packed plenty of water from the mainland.
The jungle exclusion follows the course of a stream, wading sometimes knee deep, so dress accordingly. I finally had to do it in my trekking shoes, it did them no favours. The river is rocky so barefoot wading is not an option, and the rocks are sometimes slippery – this may not be appropriate for small children or senior citizens.

Fantastic experience! San Blas islands are paradise on earth and San Blas Adventures helps you make the most of it. Sleeping in the hammocks, eating fresh seafood, getting to know the Kuna Yala people, great guides, fireplace on the beach, somebody playing a guitar... all of it makes a very memorable trip. I recommend it to everybody!

Me and my buddy, Doug, did the Three night/Four Day San Blas Island Tour and not only was it the highlight of our trip, but it was the highlight of my year. There are some things you should know going into this tour. Firstly, it is barely a tour. It is more an experience. You don't have a "tour guide" -- rather you have people who live on the island who will pretty much decide what you're doing that day. It's a pretty wild thing to get used to and definitely took me a second to get into the groove of things.

It all started when we were thrown into a small truck at 5 in the morning with two other people who were on a different tour (through the same company) and had a truly awful drive to get to San Blas. This is not to disparage the tour, this is just a fact. I never get carsick, and it wasn't the drivers fault in the least. The drive to get to San Blas is just awful. There is no way to sugarcoat it, and there's no way around it. It's bumpy and swervy and then both at the same time. I pride myself on never getting carsick and this drive pushed me to the limit. I never got to the point of blowing chunks, mind you, but a few times I got scared. The eyes were widening in a very particular way.

And after that we took a twenty minute boat ride which can only be described as the most intense wet t-shirt competition. A wet t-shirt competition I didn't sign up for and won. My one note to you, sit up at the front of the boat and if you see them putting things in a blue tarp put everything you own in it, it will get wet otherwise. I stupidly held onto my fanny pack which resulted in me spending the first 10 minutes on the island splaying out all my money and passport in the hope of it drying. OH! that's another thing. Nothing ever dries. It's panama and you're on an island. Get ready for your clothes to always be damp. If it gets wet, that's the end of anything being dry, so pack accordingly.

I don't want to ruin the tour for you, because half the joy is getting to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity for yourself. I imagine everyone has a slightly different take on this depending on where you're from and what you want out of an island excursion.

But I will tell you this, if you don't speak Spanish get ready to feel like a real fish out of water. These people are not running a resort, they are not your friends or your attendants. You're on their island, and they barely want you there. ESPECIALLY if you don't speak Spanish. Go with a friend who knows the language, otherwise you will be left wondering why you never took that duolingo course. just trust me on this. I felt like the ugliest one at the school dance. There are so many things that are NOT explained on this tour, down to "where do I get a towel?" that had to be explained to me by a very kind Lithuanian who did speak perfect Spanish and seemed much more welcomed in. And I get it, I'm not saying that they should be more accommodating, in fact, once again, that's part of the allure of this tour -- total immersion in a culture that couldn't give two shnitz about you. They know they live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and they also know that they are Gods and I am just a puny human (this is not a joke, but a fact I learned). So, no, of course I don't expect them to be accommodating to me, a regular man who doesn't even know how to say "Excuse me, God of Island Ina, but where could a peon like me get a towel?" All this to say, know your Spanish, okay?

Other than that, take the snorkel with you. You will go to a beautiful spot in the middle of the ocean, look over to the "guide" and say "Excuse me, do you have a snorkel?" And they will say no, and that is the end of it. So just take a snorkel from the island. And read everything very carefully before you go. Things are not explained, so it will just be a matter of what you know going in.

We went as a group of four, but at the last minute two people were delayed a day. Salim was able to catch them up to us the following day. In fact, Salim checked in on us every day, making sure we were ok and letting us know what the plan was for the following day. He also did his best to throw in some extras for the couple that was delayed. We were really impressed with his level of care.

The islands are amazing! Like some other reviews point out, you need to check any resort-like expectations at the door. Beds are not great and washrooms are shared. Also you should like or at least be able to eat fish, because that is served for lunch and dinner most days.

We went on what they advertise as a "jungle hike" from Naranjo Chico (Ina Cabins). At first we were unsure where they were going to find a big enough patch of land to call it a hike, but it turns out this event takes place on the mainland. When we pulled into a narrow river opening straight out of the ocean it was like being on "jungle cruise" and so wonderfully unexpected. The hike itself was about an hour each way, with plenty of time to swim at the falls. There are portions of this hike that are VERY MUDDY so bring appropriate footwear.

Our second night was on Isla Aguja. The island is essentially just the cabins, washrooms, and an eating area. There is an area to play volleyball if there is a group, but during our visit there were only 6 guests on the island. This is a good island for doing absolutely nothing (I was wishing for a book). There is some snorkelling too.

Our final night was on Perro Chico. This island is closer to the port and has a sunken ship just off the beach, so it is VERY POPULAR with day-trippers. They also have camping here, which means there were some party groups (whom I found entertaining). Food options were more varied here as well. Snorkeling around the sunken ship is a must.

The locals are a cash-only society, so make sure to have American dollars handy if you want to buy beer or do any tipping.
