About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- rickn7610 contributionsA peek into life under enforced egalitarianism and dictatorshipWhat’s it like to live when everyone is forced into the same cookie-cutter existence? The books are the same on every family’s shelves. The toys are the same in every kid’s toy box. The household products and processed foods all come in the same packages. Believe it or not, on this tour you get to see how individualism and creativity peek out from under the heavy lead blanket of communist autocratic systems. Look closely to see personal touches here and there amidst an otherwise banal landscape of conformity. Ask your guide for personal stories from family lore. Don’t forget to take a Polaroid in the living room to commemorate the visit.Written 29 March 2023
- zuv0 contributionsOverpricedThe entrance fee, 150 RON, is about 30 euros. For what?! To visit grandma's apartment?! The amount is huge for what this so-called museum offers.Written 21 March 2023
- Stephenie B0 contributionsRipoff and rude guideThis experience is built for westerners who have never been in any soviet era apartment. Having lived and visited soviet era apartments for free my whole life this is a complete waste of money and a bit of a joke. The guide I had, Bogdan, was rude and felt very very threatened by my knowledge of 20th century Eastern European history. I suspect he also was threatened since I spoke Russian. It was interesting that it was like a time capsule but 30€ to visit a Soviet apartment is a waste of money at best. Save your money! There’s a communist museum with a replica apartment just like this in Brasov and it costs only a fraction. Avoid, unless you like wasting money.Written 4 October 2022
- hartmutrank0 contributionstruly interactive museum, suitable for kids tooWe went with our 9 and 6 year old children to see Ferestroika museum. First, we were unsure whether a 90 minutes visit would be a good idea for our youngest kid or whether he would be bored after 15 minutes. Our guide, Alex, managed to keep the kids attention while at the same time, answering all our questions. At the end, we stayed and spent 2 full hours at Ferestroika! Well done! I can clearly recommend a visit to everyone interested in recent Romanian history.Written 3 February 2020
- Ania M0 contributionsA very neat tour!Coming from Canada, we learned a lot on this tour! Our children loved exploring all the different artifacts, and eating the treats. This was certainly a highlight during our time in Bucharest. Our guide was knowledgeable and pleasant, he met us at the nearest metro station and walked us to the apartment, so we didn't have to search for it. Do yourself a favor and book this tour. A very unique attraction!Written 14 January 2020
- alexi2480 contributionsFerestroika communist apartmentA great ‘slice of life’ museum. Very authentic. Alex the guide was very knowledgeable. Romania and Bucharest have a complicated history. This trip helped me to understand the communist part of their history.Written 30 August 2019
- atikho0 contributionsNot to be missed !This is definitlely the best cultural activity we did in Bucarest... we loved it ! It is an unuasual experience, an unusual way to present a country's history as you enter the appartement of a real family who lived there in the 80's. Alex, our guide is actually a historian specialised in the 80's era, and is happy to answer any question you may ask. You are offered drinks and delicious food too... definitely a must do in Bucarest ! Thank you very much Raluca, you know why, and thank you Alex for the great experience ! Bravo !!Written 18 August 2019

- KAH23160 contributionsTrip back in timeHad a great experience with this museum - Raluca helped us figure out the tickets for the same day we called, which was super helpful. And then we showed up late due to traffic, but Alex, our guide, was very accommodating and even stayed later to give us more details/information on the history. The entire experience was great and we truly enjoyed our time with Alex and the "museum" too! Thank you!!Written 23 April 2019

- chrisrU1790XP0 contributionsHistory AliveWhat a great experience! This is not a museum like any other, but a time machine that lets you step into the late years of Communism and immerse yourself in the home of a real family. And unlike other museums where the exhibits are behind glass, this is one that you experience through touching, sitting, trying, smelling, and feeling. Alex was a terrific and well informed guide and the attention to detail, even the Steampunk TV that displays vintage video, is impressive. Well worth the visit for anyone interested in history.Written 13 April 2019
- dbeaumont900 contributionsSurreal Communism ExperienceA really intimate, and beautiful tour through Communism in Romania. I've never experienced an interactive tour like this. Andrei was an awesome guide through the communist house too, and there's many options for immersive experiences throughout. You step into the flat and you really feel like you are in the 1980s again. Thanks to Raluca and all the team for putting together something so incredible!Written 3 March 2019
- Peter d0 contributionsA highly enjoyable and enlightening peek into the daily life of a Romanian family under communismWant to know & feel how a Bucharestean family lived during the communist period? Look no more, and book a time-traveling session at Ferestroika. A highly enjoyable and enlightening peek into the daily life of a Romanian family under Ceausescu, and a well-documented, interactive, non-partisan experience that helps understand its legacy on present day Romania. Highly recommended.Written 26 January 2019

This was one of our favourite experiences during our visit to Bucharest. Our guide was very friendly and had so much fascinating history to share. The apartment is like a time capsule, and visiting it provided lots of insight into day-to-day life during Romania's communist period. This is one of the most interesting and personal museum experiences I've visited about the history of communism in Europe.

This was so unique. The history of the apartment was fascinating and Ioana imparted her superb knowledge of the period under communism. The visit was made interactive and enjoyable for both myself and my 16 year old daughter enjoying a snack and drink from the era upon arrival.

We went on this tour in August 2022. Our guide was Bogdan. The tour is of the 'museum' which is an apartment of a reasonably well off and well placed family living under communism in the 1980s. Everything is kept as it was and this gives you a surprisingly informative glimpse of life as it was then. Bogdan was an Excellent guide. We lived the concept and the tour.. it is focused and very interesting. I couldn't help but compare the similarities of the dining ('clean') room with similar rooms in 1960s New Zealand.🤣🤣🤣. Great tour well worth doing

The tour was an engaging step into communist-era Romania. Everything in the apartment is kept exactly as it was, in perfect condition. The guide’s knowledgeable and passionate descriptions brought the apartment and its contents to life. The guide (Alex) also spoke English very well, so the tour is definitely tourist-friendly. We visited during COVID-19, so disposable gloves were provided, masks were worn by all, and groups were kept small (6 visitors at a time).

What a great morning we had on this unique experience in Bucharest. It was fascinating stepping back in time to an era within our lifetime that was so different to our own experiences! Our guide Elena was very knowledgeable and easy to listen to and chat with and it really gave us an insight as to how it was for a lot of people living under Communist rule. Great that we could touch and interact with all of the objects in the appartment and the little snacks provided were the icing on the cake!!Thank you so much to the owners for sharing their family story !

I loved that the excursion was very informative and compact - not too long and not too short. Our guide, Ioana, gave a good insight of what was happening back in the days in terms of a local family life. Also the beverages were very nice - bought some back home as well.

Ferestroika is a unique experience like no other. We were keen to find somewhere to learn about the Communist history of Bucharest and Romania, and in the absence of an official museum, chose Ferestroika. Our experience with Alex far surpassed what any museum offers!
The nature of the 'tour' - essentially a private live-in experience of a perfectly authentic 1980s apartment - meant that the experience will vary from person to person. Alex is so knowledgeable that he can answer any questions, and run a flexible tour that focuses on what you want to.
I can't recommend Ferestroika enough to anyone who visits Bucharest!

This was an amazing experience. Easy to get to the meeting point and our guide Elena was so warm and knowledgeable and really engaged with our questions. It was a really unique experience and I would thoroughly encourage anyone to do this. I learned so much and it was a welcome reminder of the reason I travel, to learn, experience and get an insight into different people’s lives. I give it six stars!

I personally enjoyed the interactiveness and dialogues shared during the entire tour! History Teacher Alex Groza narrated the family life situations and monumental moments during the late 70’s and early 80’s of Communism in Romania. It was a very informative and eye-opening experience. The entire tour took us virtually in the past and compared it with our present. All of my queries were answered well and entirely documented! This tour is highly recommended to all history buffs and intellectuals out there! This was truly a momentous experience for us! Kudos Ferestroika! I was inspired! Blessed be!

A real trip down memory lane to experience how life was during the communist era in a time capsule!
It’s a must if you love history and happen to be in Bucharest.
