Well, on the one hand the tour did not walk to very many sites, on the other the guide Ivanka's presentation was worth every minute of the tour. She made the tour so incredibly engrossing. She compressed a very nuanced and complicated Croatian history into digestible form. She had a sense of humor. She was amazingly objective in relating recent history which understandably involved her perspectives. I loved the way she told anecdotes of her mother, father and grandparents. It made it all very personal I learned a ton in this tour and would recommend it to anyone. By the way, I'm a guide myself so I can spot an exceptional guide when I see one.

5 out of 5 stars!
I had a great experience today with Free Spirit Tours Zagreb, taking both the "Best of Zagreb" and the "Communism & Croatian Homeland War" tours.
Kristina was the guide for both, and she really made the tours stand out. Her passion for Zagreb and its history really shown through, and she brought the city to life with her stories and insights.
Both tours were well-paced, informative, and truly engaging. If you’re in Zagreb and want to dive deep into the city’s and the country's past and present, I highly recommend these tours!

After 2 weeks in the Balkans, we’d heard a lot about the complex politics and history of the region, much of which was contradictory and often confusing. Then we did Ivana’s tour in Zagreb, and she managed to explain things clearly and in a way which made sense, using a variety of feature and locations in Zagreb as her props, and bringing the insight of her personal family experience. If you have any interest in the history of Croatia over the past century or so, then this tour is for you. We thought it was great, and Ivana a marvellous tour guide.

Luka was incredible. It was very fascinating to learn all about the wars of the 90s. We are not taught about the Balkans in USA schools (only the beginning of WWI is taught to have relevancy to Balkan states) it was even more insightful to learn history beginning in the 18-19th centuries and everything that led up to the 1990s. Since I have family heritage from here who emigrated pre-WWI, all of the prior history was so relevant and helpful in understanding the context of the region at that time.
Luka did an amazing job at underscoring the true horrors of war and I cried at the end, thinking of the atrocities that are being committed today against ordinary people by those who want power & resources.
I sincerely hope Luka is able to gain enough momentum for a war museum in Zagreb, and I commend him for his passion in explaining this war in as unbiased of a lens as he can. Thank you Luka!

Darko seemlessly blends comedy and tragedy in this informative and memorable experience. Not only is the history, itself, fascinating but the presentation made it come to life as Darko drew from reams of personal family anecdotes and well-researched information. Most commendably, he was quick to emphasize that the Croatian perspective is not the only one on the Yugaslav wars and that the line between right and wrong was often blurry in those times, as it was with Tito and with the Nazi occupation era. Honesty and informativeness - the ighest endorsement I could give a tour operator.

Took my two boys (11yo twins) on this today and had a great time. As one of the generation that was still at primary school during the Homeland War, Croatia spent my childhood as part of "that bid of Europe where everyone kills each other", so it was good to understand the history from a local perspective.
Ivana did a great job of covering a lot of history fairly, transparently, and with with enough spirit to keep both my boys (who have ASD and ADHD) engaged throughout. The modern elements are clearly a personal thing, and she did a very good job of making it clear that everyone understood that she gave the Croatian perspective and where to find the other side. No one whose family lives through it can be totally unbiased, but this was as close as I think it's possible to be.
Genuinely impressive, Ivana should be proud of the tour and I'd heartily recommend.

The guide, named Darko, was just amazing: he really knew how to keep our attention while talking about important history facts, and it was clear how much he cares about the topics. It was never boring. At the very beginning things are lighter and entertaining, while towards the end things became more touching, since you understand the horror of war and how pointless it is. People who fight on the field are losing their lives obeying to superiors that are not risking anything at all. It's all politics. Furthermore, Darko's family lived those events, and it was very interesting hearing his testimony.
Highly recommended.

We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to take this tour guided by Nicolina, an excellent and dedicated guide who provided us with historical information about Croatia (in Spanish) from the Second World War to the War of Independence in the 1990s, from the perspectives of the citizens as well as the military campaigns. All this information was given to us as we walked through iconic sites of the city, including the tunnels built during the Second World War to protect the population from bombing (which were used again in the War of Independence) and a small private museum about the War of Independence in the basement of a house in the center of Zagreb, also used as a shelter. We believe that this tour helps us to understand essential aspects of current Croatian culture during our visit to the country.

Probably one of the best - if not even the best - tour I have ever had. Our lovely guide Ivana was absolutely perfect. She had such a special way of making history interesting and easy to follow. It also helped that she told personal anecdotes to show that the history is still recent and very much alive. I can definitely recommend doing this tour when in Zagreb!

Freespirit are to be commended for putting this tour together, especially in such an interesting and relevant way. Importantly it fills the gap in the absence of this period of history being represented in a local museum.
Ivana is an amazing and very knowledgeable guide. She has the ability to explain the very complicated history of this region in a clear, easy to follow and understandable way and she held the attention of the entire group throughout the tour. At certain moments she interwove her personal story into the tour which made the history more relevant and brought an extra perspective.
Thank you so much!

The War tour starts at 3:00 pm, based on the information from Free Spirits Tours the only tours available at that time are Wine Tasting (starts at 6 pm) or the Beer Tasting at 6:30 pm. But you can call them and try to arrange a private tour based on your needs, they are very nice. Free spirit tours
Hope this help.
