- thescottishkiwi380 contributionsNot what you're led to believeMy partner and I went for a day trip on Fri 7 March. While we did get to see a number of sharks and tick that bucket list item off, I think there's a few things folks should know before going on this trip... - This isn't snorkeling like you'd do at a shallow reef or calm water near a beach. You're taken in a tiny boat out to 30mins from the shore to water that's both deep as hell and really choppy in bad weather. - I've snorkeled 5 times in various locations on holidays and snorkeled most weekends from living in Australia for 10 years. I've never snorkeled in water so rough. Even confident swimmers kept their lifevests on (when staff were encouraging folks to discard them if they were "good enough swimmers"). 4 of our party were back in the boat within 5-10mins. If you're not a very confident swimmer think twice about this trip unless it's a clear day with no breeze. And if you go, keep your lifevest on! - Once the snorkeling is done you're taken back to a backpacker/hostel style resort to wait it out for hours until the main ferry comes back. The swimming pool can best be described as a pond, and the resort is exceptionally basic. Not somewhere I'd choose to spend the day if I had a choice. Bear in mind that once you've snorkeled for 25-30mins (not the 45mins you're told), the rest of the day is 2hrs on a ferry to the resort, 2hrs to get back, and the apart from the snorkel, you're stuck on a basic resort with nothing to do. If seeing sharks is a must-do for you, then yup, go for it and knock yourself out. But if you're thinking this is the best thing to do in Fiji - that couldn't be further from the truth!Written 9 March 2025
- richardrT5608GY0 contributionsA horrible experience.I told the agent on-line we wanted to go on February 15, 2025. I booked it on January 19, 2025. The agent scheduled us to go to Fiji South Sea Island on that same day ( January 19, 2025)!!! What the heck?!!! When we got to the harbor on February 15th we were advised a "No show charge" was added to my credit card!!! We had to pay again to go on the trip. We were shocked to say the least and are requesting a Refund!Written 17 February 2025
- AshokM7260 contributionsA day well spentToday (Saturday, 08/02/2025), we went on a full day tour of the South Sea Island 🏝. Whereas the Pacific ocean 🌊 around Denarau/ Nadi, where we are staying, is not clean & clear ( not even blue), near South Sea Island, the water is clean and clear (but the turquoise seduction of Maldives was missing). South sea island is a tiny island, 45 minutes away from Denarau port by a Cruise, which has been developed as a beautiful tourist spot with all the facilities. The island is so small that you can make a complete round of it in 15-20 minutes. It has no jetty & tourists are taken from the Cruise to the island by motor driven boats (picture 2). Our tour package included a lunch (which was sumptuous) & unlimited beverages (tea/ coffee, beer, soft drinks & water). I once again tried to go for Scuba diving but the Trainer & Instructor, Stuart, refused to entertain me because of my age & blood pressure (I had to fill a health declaration). He asked me to bring a doctor's fitness certificate knowing well that there was no hospital on the Island! (Same thing had happened in Elephanta beach at Havelock island in Andaman).😞 Snorkelling was free but we have had enough of it in Maldives 🇲🇻 and Havelock (Andaman), so we avoided it. There was a subsea view ride also with a good view of the Coral 🪸 reef but very little sea life. It made us recall the terrific submarine ride at Maldives that had taken us 120' below sea level for a great view of under sea life. In short, Fiji 🇫🇯 is no patch on Maldives.Written 14 February 2025
- Nicola W0 contributionsNot what I expectedThe journey was easy, it was very cool in the captain's lounge. On arrival it was a bit chaotic trying to secure seating in the shade and listen to a briefing both at the same time. Lunch was called before we'd even got chance to go in the water which added to the chaos. The food was good though. The snorkelling trip to the reef was great but around the island was not at all good. Very disappointing. Perhaps there were good spots (and I did ask for guidance) but we never found them. There were only 2 snorkelling trips but we were over it all by the time the second one was called....! I would advise securing a seat on the opposite side of the island to where the boat moors, as there was zero breeze otherwise, and it was unbearably hot. The beach was hot and totally broken coral, no nice sand, so wear swim shoes. One final grouch ( and I normally don't grouch) - the staff did not seem the usual friendly bunch one gets all over Fiji. If you got an enthusiastic Bula out of them you were lucky. Even the guys on the snorkelling boat were a bit over it all I reckon. This was low-season. It would be even worse in high season!!! We left early, we'd had enough!!Written 12 February 2025

- Rdnkh0 contributionsPoor customer serviceI have used the south seas ferry to Yasawa resorts many times and never been motivated to review until today because after much 5 star service the behaviour of two destroyed all my goodwill. I am not sure but suspect south seas dominant position has led to complacency creep. Collecting baggage on return to Denarau had my bus pointed out. Took bags to bus and a very disinterested (I assume driver) appeared sort of pointed at my bags and said yes yes get on board. I asked if he wanted me to load my bags not that I have EVER had to do that on a tourist bus before but if it was expected so be it. He just ambled off saying get on the bus. I flatly refused to get on the bus and just leave bags unattended. After at most a minute other passengers appeared as did yet another South Seas employee who told us we had to load our bags - I was somewhat incredulous but ok until he did ABSOLUTELY nothing to help but yell at us for not pushing bags into the bus far enough. I turned round and said I will push my bags in as far as I can but I am NOT climbing in the luggage compartment to sort suitcases. We then were informed it would be another 30 minutes before we left which left the choice of sitting in a cold bus (air con requested to be turned off driver said no) or standing outside where it was warmer but also pouring with rain. A few passengers got off requested their bags and took taxis to their hotels.Written 27 January 2025
- Allygallo870 contributionsBest day out! This is a must do while visiting Fiji!! We did the full day and booked out tickets through viator. 2xA 2x kids 6,3yrs We had the most amazing time plenty of room on the beach for everyone and the bbq lunch was fantastic! The unlimited drinks was great as it’s very hot so you want to stay hydrated at all times, we did a snorkeling trip also included and went out and saw some reef sharks and lots of fish and coral. We had such an unforgettable amazing day out with the kids! Would definitely do that again.Written 23 January 2025
- U3342GNjulies0 contributionsFantastic day outFantastic day on castaway. Merewai was our host and took us onto the island where she showed us around with lots of information. We then snorkelled and swam and enjoyed the island hospitality. We met Merewai again before re boarding the boat and she told us lots of things about Fiji and the islands. Felt like we had our own private host. Would highly recommend. What a great day and lovely host and people.Written 20 January 2025
- 192leeaw0 contributionsAmazing day on SouthSea islandWhat an amazing island and welcoming reception! The whole process from arriving on the island, to instructions and information, friendliness and great BBQ lunch!! We loved it! A smaller boat takes you to the Beach from the large air conditioned boat but it’s only a few minutes and a lovely way to arrive. The BBQ lunch was delicious and free drinks all day! Very relaxing- would highly recommend for families and couplesWritten 19 January 2025

- AmandaH23330 contributionsLovely Day Trip to Castaway IslandWe had a great day trip to Castaway Island. Ticketing and boarding was very easy. We had a calm and scenic boat ride out to Castaway Island via a couple of other islands to drop off visitors. Our guide Merewai was fantastic - friendly, funny, knowledgeable, helpful and attentive. She made our day most enjoyable. Castaway Island Resort was very nice - the staff are lovely, the facilities are great, food was really nice and plentiful, the beach is beautiful and it was a great place to relax.Written 8 January 2025
- G2642IYaf0 contributionsDO NOT RECOMMENDWe had a very disappointing experience with South Sea Cruises during our planned trip to Malamala Beach Club. On the day of our booking, the weather was terrible—pouring rain with no sign of improvement. Anyone familiar with Fiji knows how unpredictable monsoonal weather can be, and with a 19-month-old baby, it simply didn’t make sense to transfer to an island for half a day under such conditions. There’s minimal shelter, and we would have been stuck outside the Club restaurant in the rain, which is not ideal for families with young children. We held off making a final decision until the last hour, hoping the weather might clear up, but it didn’t. The rain was torrential, not just a light drizzle. Their website explicitly states the tour operates only in good weather, and this clearly wasn’t good weather. Despite this, when we tried to cancel due to the circumstances, South Sea Cruises insisted they couldn’t refund or cancel our trip, citing their terms and conditions. This left us feeling frustrated and disheartened. We invested a significant amount of money into our Fiji holiday, but this experience soured the entire trip. As a family with two young children, it was entirely unsuitable to proceed, but it seemed our situation didn’t matter to the company. Had we been adults alone, we might have gone ahead, but our children’s well-being took priority. This experience left us feeling like nothing more than a dollar figure, despite Fiji’s reputation for its family-friendly culture and love for children. Unfortunately, I now regret booking with South Sea Cruises and would not recommend them to others. This lack of understanding and flexibility was disappointing, and we won’t be returning.Written 4 January 2025

Loved our trip to South Sea Island with young kids. Half day was perfect amount of time to have lunch, watch the performance, explore the island, swim in the pool and take a ride in semi submersible (a highlight for the 4 year old).
The organisers have clearly taken on board feedback from earlier reviews and improved the experience. They've had sand shipped in - we all wore thongs/flip flops or reef shoes, but even those in bare feet were able to walk around most areas fine. It is naturally a coral island.
There was a separate buffet lunch for the half day group, so there was plenty of fresh food ready for us when we arrived. The meat is barbequed right before your eyes, so everything is fresh.
We took our own snorkeling gear and I would recommend you do the same. The share snorkel gear every in Fiji leaves a bit to be desired.
They had stacks of lifejackets available and other families were going out on stand up paddle boards and kayaks.
Bring your own buckets and spades if you want to do this (but there are lots of shells, coral and flotsam/wood for kids to play with).
It's pretty warm if the sun is out, we just used the shade around the main areas and the picnic tables (there are separate tables reserved for the half day group to eat lunch). If you want a sunbed and you are arriving in this later group, pay to book one.
Very quick to get over there on the boat. We had an issue with the return transfer to Port Denaurau resorts (the bus was full and they said another was coming, but it transpires the same bus would come back after dropping everyone off about 40 mins later - grumpy tired kids playing in gravel beside a car park in dark not ideal). If there's no bus available when you get back and you have young kids, just jump in a taxi or get on the Bula bus. Better than waiting for the transfer. We were the only family left waiting, all the others were adults.
Staff were very friendly. Fantastic day. Would definitely go again and recommend for friends and family.

Bula Kati_Oh,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback from your recent trip to South Sea Island. We're thrilled to hear that you had such a wonderful experience on your half-day visit especially with the delicious buffet lunch, along with the cultural performance and exciting rides in semi-submersible, which your 4-year-old loved.
We appreciate your acknowledgment of the improvements to enhance comfort for all guests. Your tip on wearing thongs/flip flops or reef shoes is helpful for future guests to prepare accordingly for the terrain.
We're delighted that the separate buffet lunch for half-day guests met your expectations with plenty of fresh, barbecued meats prepared right before your eyes. It's wonderful to hear that there were ample life jackets and various water activities available, ensuring everyone had opportunities for fun and adventure. Your suggestion to bring buckets and spades for kids to play with shells and coral is noted and will surely enhance other families' experiences.
Regarding the return transfer issue, we apologize for the inconvenience caused. Your feedback is valuable, and we will work on improving our communication and efficiency in such situations to ensure a smoother experience for all our guests, especially families with young children.
We are thrilled that you found our staff friendly and that you had a fantastic day overall. Your recommendation means a lot to us, and we would love to welcome you back along with your friends and family for another memorable visit to South Sea Island.
Vinaka!

We enjoyed our half day trip to the islands! Enjoyed the boat trip and the sun on the way and the food was great, reminded us of typical Islander food so was nice to have something familiar. The free drinks was also a nice touch.
Also treated to a performance with the meal.
There were not many people on the trip so it was nice to have the island all to ourselves!
The semi submersible trip was so nice! I didn't even know they did that but was really cool to see all the aquatic life so close.
The water was lovely and cool on a hot day, like the other reviews, I would recommend taking water shoes with you as its quite rocky and uneven on the shore floor so can be hard to stand/walk on.
It ended up raining hard in the last hour of our trip so we all had to stand underneath small shelter till our boat ride back came.
Otherwise, a nice experience. Would do it again.

Bula Vinaka Helen,
Sounds like you had an amazing time on the island trip! We are so glad you enjoyed the boat ride, the food, and the performances which made your experiences special when it reflected our culture.
We totally agree with you about the semi-submersible trip; it surely is a such a unique experience in the underwater world!
Thank you for your tip on reef shoes which certainly a great tip, especially with the rocky shoreline. Unfortunately, the rain came towards the end, but it seemed like you still had a great time overall. Thanks for sharing your experiences and we definitely look forward to welcoming you back home again soon!

We considered a lot of different cruises before deciding on this one. For us the criteria were a) Not too far away as my wife gets sea sick b) Half day as that’s plenty of time in the sun for us c) Reasonably good island experience as it was our first time going off the mainland. d) All round decent quality and experience.
The South Sea Island Cruise checked all these boxes. We were picked up in a nice coach for the very short ride to the port. There was quite a bit of waiting after check in but that’s a good time to check the marina shops and restaurants if you haven’t been there before. The boat was clean and comfortable with shaded/unshaded deck options and indoor cooled section. There was a paid bar on the boat if you really need it, but beer and wine are free on the island.
The tour departed on time at 12.15. After arriving at the island we were welcomed and had a decent lunch and short dance and song performance.
There was more than enough deck chairs on the island … although we were there in off season when Fiji was still opening up after COVID so I imagine at peak it would be much more crowded … although the boat on the way back was quite full as it also included those who had been there for the full day.
Kayaks, glass bottom boat and snorkelling gear were also included in the price. You don’t really need to pay for anything on the island unless you want souvenirs from the ladies who were also singers in the lunch show.
Overall staff were friendly and helpful and the island was clean ans well maintained.
You can stay on the island if you like for a little extra. It would make a nice change for one night away from a resort hotel.
We were there a few days after a storm so there was a lot of sand in the water and very poor snorkelling and vision when in the glass bottomed boat but of course that’s unavoidable.
Some of the currents were also strong during the snorkelling and a couple of people had to be helped back to the boat, so borrow fins, take care and don’t panic.
Overall this was just what we wanted so great for those looking for a short & simple island excursion.

Very disappointing not what we expected. The trip out wasn’t too bad but coming back we felt like a ferry picking up workers do not recommend. The food was also below average.
Upon return we boarded the bus and were made to wait 40 mins for other passengers who were transferring from one hotel to another.. with a 3 year old child we were not informed that we would be waiting that long. We would have caught a taxi back if we were informed of this. This was the worst part of our trip. I felt ripped off for the money we spent. Just writing this review is actually making me cranky..

I would highly recommend the half-day cruise that comes with lunch and snorkeling included, for those that love to chillax on the beach. Diving is additional cost. The undersea adventure was ok! I loved how committed they are with organising lunch. They went above and beyond to get me vegetarian meals, cooking up freshly on the spot! I think that was the best highlight of my trip! It’s a beautiful beach, scenery is great! One must enjoy this ride!

Very disappointing - I booked this tour several weeks ago and was informed pickup
would be from our hotel - The Outrigger. To check this I tried to get in tourch with South Sea Cruises. No replies. Outcome was a very professional agent at Outrigger informed us "No pick up from here - this is a half day cruise - pick up is for full day cruises only". If I had known this I would have had time to arrange suitable travel. Due to lack of response I had no other option but to cancel a trip we were really looking forward to. This was to be part of a special 75th birthday celebration for my girlfriend and me. I was more gutted with missing out than having paid the company for the trip.

Really disappointed by this trip. We went today, did the half day tour which was meant to depart at 12:25, we waited 1 hour on the port for the boat to arrive, and hundreds of people to disembark, plus their luggage. We didn’t leave for the island until after 1:30. Once on the island we had our lunch, had a 10 minute swim then hired snorkelling gear, since we had a 3 year old with us i snorkelled for 20 minutes and then we heard the call for reef snorkelling, we tried to get our son dressed and into kids club but we missed the boat, they assured us another would be leaving in 15 minutes so we sat and waited.. the boat came back but then they boarded all those travellers leaving early, it did 3 trips then came back full to un load. It was 4:20, kids club closes at 4:30, so we got our son (they never took out another snorkel boat), so we waited 45-1hr just sitting on a rock. We swam for 5 minutes and then heard the 15 minute warning for departure ( at 4:30, when we weren’t meant to board to leave until 5:15). It took a long time to board everyone on, as it was travellers plus staff. We got back to the port at 5:30, when we were told it would be 6. We spent a lot of money to spend 20 minutes snorkelling (with nothing that interesting to see), had 3.5 hours travel time as resort on coral coast. I would avoid the half day if it is so inconsistent with departure times, as we were left with little to no time do anything - we could have stayed at the resort and snorkelled.

Had about a 23-24 hour layover in Nadi. South Sea Cruises was the only one I found that offered a half day cruises (about 5 hours). It ended up being perfect for the short stay. It went smoothly and exceeded all expectations, would recommend if you don't want to spend all day out in the seas and islands.

South sea island cruises is a great way to get around to islands.
We unfortunately didn’t have the best experience at south sea island. Highlights were the in arrival welcome song and that the staff were all so nice and helpful. Also watching a big volley ball game at the end with the staff and tourists that was fun to watch.
I would probably recommend to people who are definitely looking for max relax then this might suit you best as the island is very small and you can walk around in less than 10 minutes. We just were expecting a little more snorkelling ops which you do get 15 mins of and an awesome guide but if the boat is packed it doesn’t make for a great experience.
We weren’t able to get on the glass bottom boat as there were too many people which was a shame as I think that might have been better than the snorkelling experience we had as there is definitely a lot to see.

Unfortunately most of the activities were cancelled because of high winds - no kayaking, glass bottom boat and snorkelling so there was limited things to do with my 6 year old. This was definitely not the fault of the island management - they made the decision for our safety. We still enjoyed the pool, we loved the cultural singing and dancing and the food was yum. Still worth going!
