What to expect
After your cruise ship pulls into port in Montevideo, your private guide whisks you away for a half-day sightseeing tour of the Uruguayan capital. Travel to the city’s major landmarks, starting your shore excursion at Independence Plaza (Plaza Independencia), situated on the border of Old City.  View the impressive statue of José Artigas — a monument to the national military hero — and admire the 26-story Palacio Salvo (Palacio Legislativo), once the tallest building in South America. Walk with your guide to the opposite end of the plaza to see Puerta de la Ciudadela, one of the few surviving remnants of the city wall that once encircled colonial Montevideo. Next, you’re driven to the residential neighborhood of El Prado, whose tree-lined streets feature early 20th-century mansions. See Prado Park before you pass through Parque Batlle, a barrio and major public central park, home to Estadio Centenario, the national soccer stadium. Relax on the scenic drive through elegant Carrasco and stroll along a section of La Rambla, a beachside promenade boasting coastal views. After your half-day tour, you’re transferred back to the Montevideo port. Optional Winery Tour with Wine TastingIf you’re a wine lover who wishes to learn about Uruguay’s winemaking tradition, upgrade your shore excursion for a winery and vineyard tour. You’ll taste an award-winning tannat wine — red wine made from tannat grapes, one of the most prominent grape varieties used in Uruguayan wine. Worry-free Shore Excursion:  We will ensure your timely return to the Montevideo port for this activity. In the rare event your ship has departed, we will arrange for transportation to the next port-of-call. If your ship is delayed and you are unable to attend this activity, your money will be refunded. See our terms and conditions for full details.

Good for just highlights
Mar. 2020
This was a four hour tour of the city. Our tour guide was on time but the van was a little late as he went to the wrong port . We rode around the city with our guide pointing out the Old city and the new part of town. In the Old City we went to a park and a historical cathedral. We spent a lot of time in the cathedral which was good for some of the people in our group but a good majority found it too long. A quick drive infront of the Parliament, the residential houses by the beach and then back to the port where she basically gave us instructions on how to go to the Port Market. It is an interesting place as far as eating but not so much for shopping. Shopping was much better in Independence Hill which we found by ourselves.

Good City Tour
Jan. 2020
We took this private tour for the two of us from our cruise ship when we docked in Montevideo for the day.

Our driver/guide was there waiting for us at the end of the pier and quickly took us to his waiting van. The driver was knowledgeable however his command of the English language was limited to only what he needed to communicate to us. He was able to explain what we were seeing very well (although with a heavy accent) but when we asked questions he didn't really understand. The biggest issue I had with having the driver act as a guide as well was that he obviously couldn't turn around to talk towards us as he had to pay attention to the road. This meant that between the heavy accent and the fact that he wasn't facing us made it difficult to sometimes understand what he was saying.

Aside from that, he was very attentive to us, stopping for pictures and being very patient if we wanted to stop and spend some time walking along in an area rather than driving. We covered a huge amount of ground and I feel that we really got to see all the major highlights in the city.

The city overall is quite European in style and the building architect is beautiful. He showed us the areas that were affluent both residential and the beach resort areas but didn't really see where the average locals live. That was ok for us as we had been driven into the countryside the day prior on a wine tour and saw the reality then.

Good tour if you really only have the day there and want to cover as much as possible.

Unsatisfied!
Feb. 2020
I have used Viator in several occasions and there is none that I can remember which disappointed me.
Today, 2/22/20, me and my wife were assigned to Michael/Mikel of Top Private Tours as our driver and guide.Very disappointing!. He speaks limited English. He was using a tape recording to explain to us the places we were going to. Otherwise, he himself was unable to satisfactorily provide any additional information and at times, he was honest enough to admit he does not know. In other words, he was mostly just a driver, Not worth the money we paid.
I'm giving 3 stars because Michael did try his best to provide good service in spite of his limitations.

Guide had 3 mos experience & no training.
Feb. 2019
The guide knew practically no English. His description of something was what it was and, possibly, when it was built. He could answer no questions without stammering and coming up with nothing. We had expected to learn history, culture and architecture. We got none of that. This excursion was a totally waste of good money and time. I absolutely DO NOT recommend it to anyone.

Tremendous Private Tour
Dec. 2018
We had a group of 2 couples and were picked up at the cruise ship exactly as promised. We had a van with a driver as well as a guide. We saw the highlights of the city and the guide was very knowledgeable. The wives wanted to find a yarn shop and the guide and driver were very accommodating and took us wherever we wanted to go in a very efficient manner.
