About
Take a deep dive into Peruvian culinary culture during this cooking class at Cusco's Marcelo Batata restaurant. Eating at local restaurants can give you a taste of the food, but learning to cook it yourself from an expert chef takes it to a new level. Accompany your host on a shopping trip to the San Pedro Market, before returning to the kitchen to learn typical Peruvian specialties.

- Step-by-step instructions for several dishes that you can recreate at home
- Learn how to make a Pisco sour, the national drink
What to expect
Once you arrive, meet your chef/instructor and listen to a brief introduction on Peruvian cuisine. Through the chef's commentary, come to understand the history of Peruvian cuisine in a way that you couldn't by simply tasting a few local delicacies.
Head to the San Pedro Market on a guided tour, where you learn how to pick out the best ingredients by color, aroma, and texture. Taste several varieties of exotic fruits endemic to Peru before returning to the restaurant's kitchen for your cooking lesson. Learn how to make dishes, such as ceviche with fresh fish, the national drink pisco sour, and lomo saltado (stir-fry dish). Then, sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

It was a perfect experience in Cusco ! We learned how to cook ceviche and lomo saltado, discovered how to prepare chilcano and pisco sour and tasted delicious creations from Uchu Restaurant. Elvira and Cristina were really good teacher and cooker. Thanks a lot !!

This was an incredible experience and was my favorite thing we did in Peru. It is worth every penny. Jose was lively, educational, talented, and humorous and made the experience even more spectacular. We started with tasting a bunch of fruits native to Peru, made our own ceviche and pisco sours, and got to flambé for our main meal! It was a great way to explore Peru’s culture. I highly recommend!

We had an amazing time with this class. We did it during COVID and while precautions were taken, it did not negatively impact the experience. Chef Jose was knowledgeable, attentive and made the class very enjoyable. We highly recommend taking this class.

i've been to quite a few cooking classes. and while practice makes better, i'd prefer not to have someone else review proper knife skills and have us spend 30-40 minutes chopping vegetables up. this cooking class actually had a designated sous chef!
YOUR IN PERU! spending this time actually learning about how the culture, climate, and landscape intersect was something i didnt know i was missing from other classes. i learned a great deal about peruvian cuisine, history of people/styles, agriculture, etc. i did do the actually cooking of several appetisers, and a main dish, but didnt waste time chopping onions (again). Instead spend learning and focusing on unique COOKING techniquies (instead of chopping techniques).
absolutely worth every penny.

We joined the class, guided by Cristina. It was absolutely an interesting and fun experience. We were explained about and shown (and tasted!) Peruvian cuisine staples (fruits, quinoa, potatoes…). Then we had the chance to cook our own ceviche and limo saltado, with in between a pisco tasting and Pisco-based cocktails making session.
Cristina was absolutely an amazing host, kind, knowledgeable and friendly. Recommended.

This class was a perfect mix of understanding how Peruvian cuisine has developed ( a little bit of history) and fabulous cooking and tasting . We did this as a family and we all really enjoyed it ,it was a perfect length of time and the content was really good. I also liked how particular the chef was about hygiene as we cooked and how we learnt about the market ingredients

The cooking class was very informational, they explain you a lot of the history of food in Peru and how it was evolved into what it is today. I have done other cooking classes before in the past and I feel like while they are explaining the history they can also have everyone prepare the ingredients needed for the plates that are done in class rather than have everything precut and ready for the class. In the class they mention that they don't take people to the market because it is not clean but the market in Cusco not only is in walkable distance to the class but also one of the cleanest markets I have seen in Central / South America. They have a market in the restaurant but it is for demonstration purposes only; I think they should make it a real market for the students to pick the ingredients for the class that way it adds more value to it. At the end of the class we all didn't feel like the price paid was worth it and they put too much emphasis on having all the bills super crips and they can't even have the regular wallet-middle-bill-rip. If they can't have "damaged" dollars then they should accept other payments methods other than cash.

This class was very fun, lots of food and great instruction. We learned about local spices and tasted a lot of foods. Made Lomo Saltado, Ceviche, and Pisco Sour - we loved it - well worth the cost and time, one of our favorite excursions in Peru.

Our chef made this an absolute blast. We learned about Peruvian food but also about the culture and how the various food products fit into this culture.
And above all, we had the opportunity to cook and to eat some amazing food.
Would recommend this class to anyone traveling through Cusco! We would definitely do this again!

From the charming bar and kitchen work space where you spend your time, to the delicious appetizers that are sent out throughout the class, you can’t go wrong with this introduction to Peruvian food and drink! From the multitude of fresh fruits, to cooking our own ceviche and lomo saltado...and learning to make pisco sours after chef provided information on pisco in Peru.
Chef Alejandro took great care of our group of four. It turned out another group of 6 people were supposed to be in our class but they got delayed returning from the Sacred Valley so we had the chef all to ourselves which was pretty amazing.
If you are looking for a cooking class in Cuzco do not hesitate in booking this experience.

The afternoon class I attended started at 2:00 and we met a couple doors down from Marcelo’s Batata restaurant at the cooking class kitchen. It is in the same spot as Uchu’s restaurant, also owned by the same owners.
