Rainbow mountain was one of the coolest places I went to in all of Peru. The tour guide was great and so was the bus driver and everyone involved. I highly recommend doing this if you ever go to Peru.

Rainbow Mountain with Alpaca Expeditions and Guide Ruben Sandwich
Aug. 2021
I used Alpaca Expeditions to visit Rainbow Mountain with an excellent guide who goes by the name "Ruben Sandwich." Ruben took us to the iconic spot, and then away from the crowds. He is a very cool dude who spoke authentically about his experiences with San Pedro and spirituality, so if you are heading to Rainbow Mountain with Alpaca Expeditions, be sure to request Ruben: you will not be disappointed!

Amazing Tour
Aug. 2021
The tour up to the rainbow mountain is beautiful. All the colors of the minerals are impressive. The mountains with snowcaps nearby where amazing. The tour guides offered the red valley to us and it took some extra effort but the red valley is definitvly something that should not be missed if you feel well at that height.

The tour was very well organized. The tour guides did a very good job.

One word of caution: The tour starts at 4700m and ends at 5000m. The air is thin and that makes the tour harder than a tour 2000m lower. There a horses that can be rented to get up to the rainbow mountain. The red valley is a good idea if you feel well on the rainbow mountain.

It really is that colourful
Jul. 2021
We were sceptical of the pictures we saw on the internet, but with good weather on the day of our trip, the bands of the rainbow mountain really were brightly colourful, and the view with your own two eyes were more stunning than any picture we took. Transport takes you to a parking lot around 4km from the viewing spot, but at 4800m+ the short hike could take up to 2 hours for those not used to the altitude. For experienced hikers it can take under an hour. There is one main route used for getting there and back, but some hikers go by the longer old route which takes 3 hours on the way up. The long line of picture-takers at the view point meant social distancing wasn't realistic to enforce, and many took off their masks as it made the thin air harder to bear.

Rainbow Mountain with Alpaca Expeditions
Jun. 2021
Great experience hiking to Rainbow Mountain with Alpaca Expeditions! (tried to leave a review on their page, but had already left one for a Machu Picchu trek and Tripadvisor wouldn't let me leave a 2nd review).

Alpaca is the best trekking outfitter in the Cusco region, hands down. Our guide Fletcher was very knowledgable and patient during our hike (we took lots of breaks due to the altitude).

Speaking of altitude, 17,000 ft is no joke! My wife and I acclimated for 3 days in the Sacred Valley and then 1 night in Cusco before our hike to Rainbow Mountain. We felt fine during the hike and didn't start to feel the effects of altitude sickness until our decent. After speaking with other people who did the hike, 9 out of 10 people get sick. You've been warned! That being said, the views are worth it.

Your day begins early in the morning (4am for us). You spend a couple hours on a paved road and then a couple hours on a gravel, windy road through the Peruvian countryside. The van ride is half the battle!

Short hike overall, only 3.5K one way. Takes awhile though because of the altitude. You get views of Ausangante Glacier at the top. When you reach Rainbow Mountain, hike a little further up the hill to get a better view. Totally worth it.

On the way back, we popped into the Red Valley. Alpaca is one of the only outfitters allowed to enter the valley, so I highly recommend you go with them.

Lunch was provided once we arrived back at the van. Delicious food! If you're looking to hike Rainbow Mountain in a day, definitely go with Alpaca Expeditions. You won't regret it.

Breathtaking experience
Amazing experience and amazing tour guide! Sitting at 5,200 meters (17,061 ft) above sea level, breathing was difficult and my lungs felt like raisins. The thing that kept me going was the beautiful view awaiting at the top! And the cute alpacas were a nice surprise too. Highly recommended this tour ✨

Fun day trip
Jul. 2021
We were not able to hike up to Huayna Picchu because of COVID restrictions so elected to head back to Cusco and hike to Rainbow Mountain. It is a short hike but the elevation will make you feel like you're out of shape. We went with Rainbow Mountain Cusco. They picked us up at our hotel at about 4AM and fed us and did a good job getting us there and back. The mountain is pretty and we are glad we did this.

Unforgettable Adventure life Experience

The tour guide was great. The driver was great. The food was good. I would recommend this tour if you want a day to remember, great photos and a story to tell. Price is too low really. Tip your guide and your horse workers if you get a horse.
