      Avoid Hell‘s Kitchen
I had very high hopes for the 8 day course at Palate Sensations and was extremely disappointed by it. I do not recommend it at all, there are many better options in Singapore. If it had been advertised as a “Survive Singapore’s Hell’s Kitchen” event at least I would have expected the contempt and exasperation shown to students by Chef Ryan. However, it was their Culinary Foundations class for beginners, and while I anticipated an immersive and enjoyable experience, it was not. This course is advertised as: -specially created for beginners -ideal for people who have none or some prior experience to cooking -for the home gourmand to becomie a proficient cook -basic culinary skills that help establish a firm foundation While one can’t deny that Chef Ryan has a passion for cooking, he definitely does not have a passion or interest for teaching beginner, home, and non-industry cooks. He arrived late for most sessions and we then had to wait further for him to collect the days’ supplies from the store room; the instructions for the day were hurried, chaotic and disorganized; he spent a significant portion of each class in another part of the facility preparing the mid-day staff meal or lunch for corporate events; he was impatient and frequently scolded students (so much so that one left humiliated half way through the first class); when he was available he would just watch us and rather than give helpful instruction or reminders, he would wait until we made an error so he could criticize. It made for a completely awkward and unpleasant atmosphere throughout the duration of the classes. He made it clear he has worked in professional kitchens for many years and while that explains where he learned that behaviour, it does not excuse the lack of respect he shows all of his (paying!) students. We were all there to learn or improve our skills, and rather than fostering an excitement and passion for cooking, he managed to do the complete opposite. While I did learn a few new techniques it was not worth the cost or the ordeal. The ‘cookbook’ provided was a set of poorly photocopied pages and none of the recipes had methods that we actually followed (there were even errors in some, they should all be re-written). There were also some food handling issues (raw and thawed mussels sat at warm room temp for 3 1/2 hours prior to cooking- and no, I didn‘t want to taste them). The only bright spot was the administrative/reception staff person as she was always friendly and helpful.

      Great fun bonding over cooking
We took the evening Aroy Mak Thai cooking class in early July. The dishes we cooked were: Tom Yum Goong (soup); Phad Thai (noodles); Thai spring rolls (fried); Mango Sticky Rice (dessert). It was a 3-hour cooking class, so we came prepared with comfortable clothes and shoes. Our instructor Loreta was both friendly, encouraging and patient! We had so much fun despite standing on our feet to cook for three hours! It was also my friend’s first time peeling raw prawns! Lol! Highly recommended for friends, family bonding and even team building!

Great experience - a must do!
Great instruction, great recipes, amazing passion for food and culture- not visiting Palate Sensations is a mistake! We came to Singapore on vacation because of the food, and signed up for class at Palate Sensations to learn a couple of our favorite recipes right from the source. Having worked in food for the last 25+ years I can attest to the quality of both the recipes and the instructions. They know what they are doing and teach in a way that make even the most unsure in a kitchen feel comfortable. A don’t miss - we will be back every time we come visit Singapore. Thanks to Lynnette and team for an amazing afternoon and for contributing to our Singapore memories!

Needs to come with a nasty warning
I signed up for the Peranakan High Tea class for a day out with my mum and we were looking forward to a day of bonding and fun. Less than 2 days before our class, they sent me an email telling me the class is cancelled due to low-sign ups. Low sign-ups did not happen overnight. Palate Sensations would have known way ahead and could have offered me alternatives in advance. But of course, they don't care. On the flipside, these are their terms for us: Palate Sensations will not offer refunds, transfers, change of dates or postponements should you be unable to attend or if you arrive more than 10 minutes later than the commencement of the class for any booked or confirmed event. There are no reminders given for classes. Reading the reviews here, Palate Sensations cancelling at short notice is not uncommon. Sign up for their classes at our own risk. They impose much more stringent terms on us but keep things nice and easy on themselves.

      Love this place!
I've done many cooking and baking classes at various spots in Singapore, and Palate Sensations is definitely at the top. In particular I appreciate that all of their chefs are trained, industry professionals, which means they are able to instruct at a level above and beyond self taught home cooks and bakers. I've done classes now with 5 different instructors and all have impressed me with their knowledge, the valuable tips and tricks their share, and also their friendliness and approachability. The sheer variety of classes offered is amazing, and I'm always finding a new one I want to try. The classes are well organised, with ingredients prepared and measured out ahead of time and recipes printed clearly and in detail. There have been a couple of occasions where minimum class numbers were not reached but they went ahead with the class nonetheless, which I think is amazing and is unheard of at other cooking schools in the city. There was one class, a 6-hour chocolate bonbon class, where I was the only participant, one on one with pastry chef Al. Amazing! The food I've prepared has always turned out perfectly, is delicious and they are incredibly generous with the portions prepared, so I've always had leftover to take home and share with my family (such as the over 100 chocolate bonbons I made!). And the instructions and recipes are so clear and easy to follow that I've been able to replicate them at home with great success. This is a place I keep returning to again and again, and will continue to do so!

      Best Cooking School in Singapore!
Palate Sensations (PS) is a wonderful culinary school with great facilities. The equipment and kitchen space are excellently maintained and are of industry standard. I’ve been a Guest Chef teaching at PS for 10 years and counting and have attended a few classes held by my colleagues. The Chefs teaching here are all so friendly and professional. They have countless of years of experience teaching and cooking at top restaurants around the world. I can confidently say that Palate Sensations is one of the best cooking school in Singapore!

Great place to learn some tips and tricks to further enhance your cooking repetoire
Palate is located in a quiet and accessible location. Easy to reach via public transportation. When you enter Palate the layout is spacious and neat. Every participant has a working space of their own. There are enough kitchen utensils to go around and the best part is that there is a professional cleaning crew to help in the cleaning. All the chefs that teach in Palate are carefully selected based on their industrial experience and that is a strong selling point of Palate. With chefs coming from their professional kitchen to teach at Palate participants are able to get some ideas, knowhows and fine tune their cooking finesse. Ive been coming to Palate for quite a lot of classes as the chefs instructors are friendly and knowledgeable. You are quite literally spoilt for choices as they have a lot of classes to meet your needs. Lynette the chef owner is very careful in her choice of hiring chef instructors.

      Unprofessional
I had my class cancelled within 3 working days. They offered a chance to swap for one of three different classes stated on the email they sent me. After I chose one of those classes (already sad because I really wanted the one I booked in the first place, but understandable), they replied very enthusiastically asking me to bring extra money to class as that one was 10 $ more expensive ... First and last time I tried to book a class here

Great place to learn traditional Chinese cooking!
I have been here over 3 times this year. During my course of over 3 classes, I have seen people from all walks of life and countries to learning Chinese dishes. If you are a foreigner, it would be a great experience for you to understand how Chinese cooking works and the dishes that we are familiar with. The instructor is very well travelled and she can actually suggest many good alternatives for you to cook back home. If you are a housewife, newbie, or even just wanting to know about Chinese cuisine, this is the right place for you too! You will get to hands on various types of cooking method and try the dishes we love as kids. I have even seen maids coming to the class and she was able to learn all the dishes. The instructor can speak Chinese, English and malay with ease. Hence communicating isn't a problem. All in all, the school really puts in effort in their modules to suit the interest of different types people. The instructor that I learn from is really one of the best that i have ever encountered. You can tell that the dishes she cooks are the ones that are close to her heart. The length (timing) of the class is very much reasonable and the price is definitely affordable for the type of environment, effort and experience you will get. You won't regret coming here! =)

Review of Palate Sensations Fundamentals Of Singapore Heritage Cuisine Kuih Module 1
Signed up for this 1-day class with a friend. The class was supposed to start at 10am and end at 6pm. It started a little late as my friend and I were late as we could not find the carpark. The trainer started by telling us that she would end the class earlier than 6pm as she was going to meet a friend for dinner. Fine, we understood and didn't have issues with that. The trainer then said she would end class by 4.30pm and asked if we were ok with that. We were fine with it as she said we had more than enough time to complete everything. This turned out to be totally untrue. We were rushed throughout the class. The trainer was impatient and would be sarcastic if we asked any questions that she deemed unnecessary. There were times when we were doing food preparations or cooking and she would be elsewhere chatting with another trainer instead of checking to see if we were doing fine or needed help. She kept rushing us throughout every item that we were making, especially for the last 2-3 food items. As there were 5 of us in the class, we were spilt into 2 groups and my friend and I were in 1 group while the other group consisted of the remaining 3 ladies. As the other group had 1 more person, they naturally finished things faster than us. The trainer didn't wait for my group to finish cooking our last item and kept calling us to take a group photo when we were trying our best to complete our cooking. And it was only 4.20pm at that time. By the time we packed the food, cleaned up the place, filled up the feedback forms and left the kitchen, it was only 4.50pm. Seriously, this is totally unprofessional. The course cost $250 per person and was supposed to run for 8 hours. If it ended early because there was more than enough time to cook and prepare everything, I would have had no problems with that. But in this case, the trainer rushed us through preparing and cooking the items and was totally impatient throughout just so that she could end early for her own benefit! And she achieved what she wanted, by ending at 4.30pm, at the expense of those who paid and were rushed through the class. Granted, the trainer was knowledgeable and the food made was delicious. The portions were also generous. However, can I remember much of what I had learned in the class? Not at all, it all whirled by in a flash as we were rushed, especially for the last 2-3 food items. So would I go back to Palate Sensations again for a class? Highly unlikely, after such a negative experience.

      Excellent
We were a little unsure what to expect when we booked the 2 day Thai menu course. The course was really enjoyable, ingredients and equipment were first class and the chef was friendly and knowledgeable. We forgot to mention my wife was vegetarian and, on the spot, the chef found tofu and quickly made her own vegetarian vegetable stock. The place seems well organized and the class size was only 6 on day 1 and 4 on day 2. The chef was very watchful and the meals produced were delicious. Is definitely recommend for couples, family or just friends / foodies who want a more unusual activity together.

      Great time with the family
We were in Singapore for a family (my wife, myself and 3 children of 7, 5 and 3 years old) holiday and had contacted Palate Sensations in advance to arrange a private cooking workshop. The experience was really great. We were welcomed by Rebecca, the operations manager and introduced to our chef, Loreta. Everything had been laid out and prepared for us. Workspaces, and all of the ingredients. Smaller knives for the children, and larger ones for the parents. Some cooking classes are more "cooking shows" - but we got to do every step of the process. Not only that, but Loreta shared and taught us real cooking skills, such as how to handle a knife for maximum safety, and the quickest way to cut vegetables for our Japanese stew. She patiently explained everything. While we cook at home, we are far from professional cooks, but Loreta made us, parents and children, feel comfortable and we all took away something from the workshop. Then there was the little things which show you've come to a great place. Everything was spotless. Ice water, tea and coffee were provided in a corner. And when the children were at the end of their attention span, they could run around in the playground which is just in front. The table was set for us and we got to enjoy our lunch. Rebecca was on hand at all times to help us take pictures, and shortly after our visit, I received an e-mail with the recipe and the photos that were taken. All little details that show how much thought was put into the service. Palate Sensations is certainly not the cheapest option for cooking lessons in Singapore, but we felt it was time, and money, well spent for a great experience. The place was happening with two other groups taking classes, but it was well managed and not overcrowded. All in all, a big thank you to the team!

I recently attended your baking class, and while I appreciate the opportunity to learn from a professional, I feel that the class did not live up to my expectations. As a student, I believe that learning is a two-way journey, and I am not here just to watch what the coach does and replicate it exactly.
I came to your class with the intention of learning new techniques, gaining a deeper understanding of the baking process, and exploring my creativity in the kitchen. However, I felt that the lack of explanation and detailed instructions during the class prevented me from achieving these goals.
As a student, I believe that it's essential to have a clear understanding of why certain techniques are used and how different ingredients work together to create the final product. I came to your class hoping to gain this kind of knowledge, but unfortunately, I felt like I was simply copying what you were doing without truly understanding the techniques involved.
I want to emphasize that my goal in attending your class was not simply to replicate what I could find on YouTube or in a recipe book. Rather, I came to your class with the hope of gaining a deeper understanding of the baking process and developing my own skills and creativity in the kitchen.
I want to emphasize the importance of time in the learning process. As a student, I understand that everyone's time is precious, and we all have busy schedules that make it difficult to commit to lengthy learning experiences.
When I decided to attend your baking class, I made a conscious decision to invest my time and resources into this experience, with the expectation that it would be a valuable and worthwhile use of my time. However, I found that the lack of detailed explanations and instructions during the class prevented me from maximizing my learning experience.
As a result, I feel that my time and resources were not used effectively.

Hi, it's unfortunate that your experience in our class has been less than enjoyable and learning-filled. Please know that every baking class is supposed to be a demo, where we explain the concepts and demonstrate the techniques and then ask participants to replicate hands-on. The outcome for each class also depends largely on both participants and instructors communicating clearly during the session. As we are hearing this from you only now, we would love to invite you to come to class again free of charge, and we will happy to address your concerns. Palate Sensations Culinary School is the leading leisure culinary school in Singapore for 18 years now. We have thrived in this industry because of our commitment to quality instruction and the joyful experience we create for our community. We look forward to welcoming you to class one of these days.

Our chef was good for the market tour, and quite knowledgeable about the history of the area/market. (He arrived fairly late, but did let us know ahead of time.) The actual class was about a 10-minute drive away, in a very modern building on kind of a corporate campus. It was a long-ish wait for the class to start, as the air-conditioning was not working. When we finally started, it was a little less hands-on than we had hoped, and at times it seemed like we were apprenticing with a chef (who was kind of barking orders at us) rather than being students doing this for fun. This was a private class for two people, so it wasn't like he was off helping other students. The food was delicious although way too much for two people (we made chicken rice, which requires cooking a whole chicken).

We started with the market tour at Tiong Bahru Market.
Ryan provided us with lots of interesting background information: the history of the area, the market, the products on offer and the variety of hawker stalls.
Afterwards we took a taxi to the cooking school. It is perfectly furnished so that we could start cooking right away.
Ryan is an absolutely competent cooking professional, so we were able to benefit a lot.
Enjoying the three-course meal was the perfect end to this great event.

We booked our cooking sessions 3 days before the date of the class and everyone from Palate Sensations was very lovely! They have accommodated us and were very flexible on the class dates and times, highly recommended to enjoy with friends! We were given the recipe of the yummy Vietnamese cuisines we cooked and we get to eat and also take home the food we cooked! Calista was lovely in accommodating me and my friend Vivian. Chef Lynette was amazing and fun, she is indeed a great chef! Very inspiring and made us feel comfortable showing us the works and giving us tips and tricks in cooking along the way. I will definitely refer you to all my friends as I had a great experience! I am looking forward for our next class with you! Cheers from Italy! - April

I attended the advanced sushi course and it was my first time at Palate Sensations. I can honestly say I have never had a better cooking experience than with Chef Amelia!! I learned not only how to make sushi, but also learned various thing about the culture around it ect. She even gave us a recipe of a sauce that was not in the curriculum and told us where we could be the utensils to cook the things at home. The ingredients were A+ and very fresh. The class was very hands on and everything was very well explained by Chef Amelia. The venue was extremely clean, the staff friendly and the event was well organized. I can recommend this class to everyone!!

Thank you so much for this great experience!!
