          Highly recommended desert experience
Wow! What an unforgettable experience in the Black and White Deserts. The natural beauty of the area, and warm hospitality of Alaa, Mahmoud and Bakr were far and away the best parts of our trip to Egypt; better than the pyramids. We were picked up in Cairo and had a pleasant drive to the Baharya Oasis. Then toured a few spots, each more amazing and beautiful than the previous one. We camped in the White Desert. The night was cold but we had a delicious and warm meal, and saw more stars than we ever have in our lives. The sleeping bags and blankets they provided kept us all warm and cosy. After a great breakfast and more touring, we had lunch back in Bahariya and traveled back to Cairo with full hearts and lots of great pictures to remember our trip. Highly recommended. If you go in the winter, bring lots of layers to wear, as the days are comfortable but the nights are quite cold. Even though they had everything we needed (tissues, trash bags, snacks, lots of water and drinks), we were glad we brought our own toilet tissue too. (Maybe because we traveled with two teen girls.) For the toilet, you just find a private corner in the desert behind a rock. We don't camp often and weren't sure what to expect, but we all really enjoyed the time. Next time maybe we'll do an extended walking tour where you go to similar parts of the desert but have more time to walk from place to place and really soak it all in. Thank you Egypt Desert Star!

          Deserted deserts
While the desert is always evolving, sensitive and fragile, the life that comes and goes inevitably leaves a trace. As I will explain, the jeep you’re in will double as a spaceship and a boat. Explore an ancient ocean floor covered with ancient shells in the ancient mud. Then find much more recent footsteps of beetles, desert foxes and camels. At first your city eyes will look for shapes it recognizes. This leaves you to find people and cities far away, only to realize these are rocks or shadows. The solitude we found on our first of two nights was as lonely as it was serene. It makes you remember you really do live on a planet in space. Our guides, Mahmoud and Bakr, had contagious affection for their region. They were hospitable, knowledgable, patient, great cooks and honestly, I would trust them with my life. Everything is very well organized, you get picked up and dropped off wherever you like. You will get so much nice food to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner that you will never begin to find yourself even a little bit hungry or thirsty. Thanks again for the good care you all took!

          Stunning, amazing desert trip!
When we arrived at the oasis we had a tasty lunch outside in a beautiful setting before going to our stops in the desert. Alaa and team were very kind and knowledgeable, they pointed out the best locations! The desert locations were amazing and I felt we saw a big variety of what the desert had Highly recommend this experience. For those camping I would suggest brining a hoodie as there were a few flies at night but they were not bad with the tent zipped up. The tent was very spacious and comfortable

Incredible trip! Loved the white and black desert and Alaa cooked us the best meal we had in Egypt! We did see other tour groups at each stop so it wasn’t as remote as expected but still good.

Great experience with Alaa in the desert
As far as we are concerned, there are two treasures in Egypt. One was found in 1922 in the tomb of Tutankhamun. The second one is Alaa – the owner and main person you will work with on your trip to desert – if you go through his company (Egypt Desert Star). It is debatable which one is more valuable . We highly recommend him as your desert guide. He is knowledgeable, pleasant and takes his job seriously. The guy has what I would call “people skills” – that you either have or not – and you can’t learn in school. He is highly sensitive to what you: say, do, want, not pushy at all, anticipates your needs etc. We chose to get from Cairo to Luxor through the desert (5 day trip). I read reviews of other travellers regarding safety in this area of the Egypt – as all of the Government Websites of US, Canada, and Britain were warning against travel to this area. After deciding that it is worth the risk, we booked this trip. In our opinion it was perfectly safe. All of it was interesting, but “White desert” was a revelation. Comparable with all the temples in Egypt combined, but unexpected. We spent over a month in Egypt, and saw a few temples – to say the least, but we wouldn’t want to leave Egypt without seeing the White Desert. The last 2 days of the trip we had Police escort when we were travelling from White desert to Farafra oasis and later to Kharga Oasis and finally to Luxor. I must say – it was impressive to see Police vehicle travel with us - with 3 policemen. It looks like the Egyptian Authorities take safety of tourists very seriously. Or maybe, they thought we were dangerous, who knows. Our desert police escort kept us without a hint of “bakhshesh”, only putting their hand on the heart – as a sign of respect - when we were parting our ways, on the outskirts of Luxor. Needless to say – after driving just a few hundred meters in Luxor proper, our driver was pulled over by the local corrupted cop – who demanded money – just because he saw tourists inside - none were given. The three days we spent in the desert with Alaa were out of this word interesting. Probably the most interesting was White Desert, the third treasure of Egypt in our opinion. Not only Alaa showed us all little (and big) quirks of the desert, the guy also has GPS build into his brain. One day we had strong wind and sandstorm in the desert, very interesting and is exciting to see on the pictures right now, but not that pleasant when we were in the middle of it. Needless to say, we never got lost. Whenever he prepared food, such as the desert camp dinners, it was fresh, plentiful and tasty. 2 nights that we slept in the desert – they grilled meat over the fire – also tasty. Our trip included hotel stays, and he booked the best available hotels in the desert. Last thing we wanted to say is – that whole trip was booked – purely based on trust – using WhatsApp to communicate with Alaa. We made our payment in full, on the 2nd day of our trip. If you are going to organize your trip to desert with Alaa like we did, please do not abuse his trust, it is in short supply in Egypt – most people who deal with tourists, are out to get you. Nothing like that when it comes to Alaa. The guy is rock solid – but I guess – you got that from this review so far…..

          Fabulous Family Adventures
We are a family, with two kids who are 8 and 11. We had two very different and equally fantastic trips with Alaa. First a 3 nights White Desert safari, which was quite possibly the best family adventure we ever had. Alaa's vehicle and equipment were perfect, we had a fabulous time driving over dunes, sand boarding, but the highlight was the camping and meals part. Alaa managed to put together incredible 3 course dinners and lunches, cooking in the desert the best meat we had in Egypt. A desert fox visited us one night, and we spent the evenings around the fire. We had such a positive experience with Alaa, that we asked him to organize a 7 days trip for us, over Christmas, to Siwa. Alaa took care of everything, from our pick up in Maadi, to staying over in Marsa Matruh (including excellent sea food dinners!) and a fabulous 4 days itinerary in Siwa, accompanied by a really knowledgeable and professional Siwan guide, Omar. It was another very successful family adventure. Alaa goes out of his away to accommodate any specific needs and requirements, takes into account kids presence, his vehicles are in excellent state and we always felt totally safe. We will definitely be asking him to organize other adventures for us and our friends!

          Great Desert Tour With Alaa
Our familiy of five (three children age 13,11,9, and two adults), accompanied by our amazing and wonderful guide Alaa, had a phenomenal tour. We were picked up from our Cairo hotel at 7.30 and arrived just before lunch at Bahariya Oasis. Here we met with Alaa and had lunch. After lunch we headed to the black desert and climbed a hill that gave us a great view of the surroundings. Then we sped off toward the white desert. On the way we stopped to look at the crystal mountain and went sandboarding, both awesome and unforgettable experiences. We arrived at our campsite just in time to catch the stunning sunset. As for the dinner, someone needs to give Alaa a Michelin Star. We had delicious chicken expertly grilled over a campfire and amazing soup, rice, potatoes and cooked vegetables. Make sure you bring layers because it gets cold at night. It is very quiet and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Cairo. The next morning after a goo nights sleep in the spacious tent, we had a breakfast that may have surpassed our dinner. After breakfast we took a stroll to look at the breathtaking rock formations. On our way home we stopped outside Bahariya and enjoyed a rustic hot-spring. I highly recommend this tour and all of us loved it especially the children. A must-do in Egypt and one of the highlights of our trip.

Warm, welcoming and knowledgeable guide; A tour you can curate to your own tastes
Our family of four (incl. 2 teen boys) took a 3 day/2 night Black and White Desert Tour with Egypt Desert Star, run by Alaa and - for our tour - assisted by his friend, Mohammad. It was wonderful - just the nature break we needed, bookending "historical" day tours throughout Cairo as well as Abu Simbel. At 7:30 am on Day 1 we were picked up at our Cairo hotel by a driver who took us on the 4.5 hour journey (with a 10:15 rest stop!) to an oasis called Bawiti, where you meet Alaa at a small outdoor restaurant and he had a huge lunch prepared for us (same on our return day!) From there, we were off to the Black Desert where he unleashed our kids on the mountains to climb, slide and pose for pics - always on our own time schedule. Because "teens," Alaa then treated us to some fun sand dune driving, cresting hills and four-wheeling our way through gorgeous vistas on our way to the White Desert where we spent the two nights (in two largely different places). He learned our interests and, having led these tours since he was 15 he knows the desert like the back of his hand, he curated the tour to include things he thought we'd like. (Sand boarding, climbing, running down dunes for the kids and sunset/sunrise camping vistas with interesting geological formations and rocks for the adults.) It also seemed like Alaa was always feeding us! He offered us SO MUCH delicious food, so often, that I think we actually gained weight in the desert. He was fun to chat with and was very kind, offering options of things to see and helping us get the most out of our time spent in the desert (even helping me find ancient seashells now in the Sahara!) It was time well-spent outside the city learning more about oasis culture and the history of the Sahara, giving us wonderful family memories and some unexpected photos of Egypt!

Fantastic experience with a great guide
After a few last minute changes due to police road closures we (my grown up children and a friend) did the White Desert, Black Desert and Siwa Oasis over 6 days. Alaa was very accommodating and organised a fantastic trip for us. Throughout the trip he was patient, supportive, considerate and adaptable - a really nice guy. After seeing my interest in history Alaa arranged for a local guide/historian to spend a morning showing us the sights and telling us about the history of Siwa. This was great and we leaned a lot while also being entertained. There was a lot of driving, particularly to Siwa, but the transport was comfortable and the time passed quickly. Despite this it was worth it. Siwa is very remote and so it is basic but it is safe. There were a lot of flies and mosquitos so be prepared and like the rest of Egypt you can get stomach upsets. We are all already planning to go back and will not hesitate to contact Alaa when we do.

          Perfect guide and mind-blowing experience
I booked a 5 days tour with Alaa though Fayyum, Black and White Desert, Dahla and Kharga oasis. What can I say - one of the best experiences I have ever had with local guides. It is one of the friendliest guides I ever met, he was so amazing driver especially when we crossed the dunes area, he took care of us as if we were his family. Thanks for that. I must also say that for me the food experience in the desert was one of the memorable things - the food Alaa cooked for us was without a doubt the best food we had though our whole 11-day trip in Egypt. I really enjoyed being a guest of Alaa and his agency, he was always on-time, was very polite and ready to adopt to our wishes and ever-changing plans, could find a great guide in the middle of the desert if needed. And yes, I think it was the best idea not to limit our trip to just desert areas near Bahariya and Farafra, apparently Dahla and Kharga have a lot to offer as well. Very memorable.

Myself and my husband booked the 1 night 2 day tour. Our tour guide Alaa was the best!! From pick up from our hotel in Cairo, sand boarding, watching the sunset, star gazing to sunrise & getting dropped off back at our hotel, everything was perfection. On top of that Alaa is a great cook and very friendly. The white desert itself is beautiful and feels like another planet. The whole experience is a must do while in Egypt and I only wish we had booked another night. Thank you Alaa and Ahmed for an unforgettable experience.

Best part of my Egypt trip
I and my friends stayed in Egypt for 18 days, and spent 3D2N on this trip. I can say, this short trip is the best part of my Egypt travel. You don't need to worry about things like food, accommodation and transport, Alaa would arrange everything for you, and for sure would exceed your expectation. Alaa arranged private pickup for us from the hotel in Cairo to the desert (and the way back). And in the desert area, his brain is the google map (no mobile signal there) that he knows the ways well, he introduced many places to us, and would look for and pick the best location to settle down (to avoid too much wind and for us to shot milkway). For the accommodation, you won't expect 5-star quality, but it was comfortable enough for me to fall asleep quickly and won't feel any back pain when wake up. Don't worry about being too cold, sleeping bag should keep you warm enough. Alaa is definitely a good cook. The meals prepared by him were even better than the foods i had in Cairo. BBQ chicken, beef stew, tomoato soup, they were all freshly and nicely made, with big portion too! Plenty of coke, juice, water were available, hot sweet tea would be served as well. And for the desert and scenery itself, i definitely recommend it if you are travelling to Egypt. The black desert make you feel like being in another planet (Mars?!), the white desert looks so quiet and calm, and the milkway is simply amazing. We also visited crystal mountain and some other places with different geology, tried sand sliding, etc. Alaa is very nice and easily to talk with, he also shared with us one Egyptian card game and we enjoyed it! Just let him know what you want for your trip, he will bring the best to you! * Actually Alaa was with his another crew member, so credit to him as well (just I forget his name)

          Unforgettable trip
A month of travel through Egypt and Turkey. Pyramids, temples, tombs, balloon flight, and we are 100 percent sincere with our friends when they ask us what was the best of the trip and respond in unison: the desert! And we firmly believe that this is due to a person who made it possible, Alaa. In the early morning the driver picked us up at the hotel, to take us to the Bahariya oasis. When we enter the car, there were two bottles of cold water waiting for us and the air conditioner ready. Upon arrival, our guide Alaa was waiting for us with the food ready, hearty, delicious, regional. Then our journey began, first the black desert and then we went out of the way to enter the sand to our next destination: the white desert. On the way we met several natural rock formations and we got off the vehicle in each of them to have our photo. How much adrenaline generated by going through the sand in 4x4 !!! Going up, down, turning !!! The stability of these vehicles is surprising. After laughing when I fell sandboarding, we continued our journey to the white desert, where the sunset was waiting for us. You can not explain the feeling to watch the sunset in absolute silence, staining the landscape and the sky orange, it was enough, all that followed was a gift. And that was how Alaa and his attentive assistant set up the tent in the sand and lit the fire to prepare the food while we lied down to enjoy the incredible milky way, millions of stars, watching satellites and shooting stars in absolute silence, a truly unique experience . In the morning, before concluding our tour, we observe the sunrise, have breakfast, visit some more formations, and then we make our way back to conclude one of the greatest experiences we had in our lives. Alaa we thank you deeply for everything, for being so attentive, we will never forget the desert, the one that you are so passionate about and know as the palm of your hand. Big hug. Debora and Andres.

It’s a 5 hour drive from Cairo to Baharya Oasis there is a checkpoint where you have lunch the food is amazing (beans, white-cheese with tomatoes, fires...). Then they take u with 4x4 AC cars to the black & white dessert where you get to see the attractions and hike if u want.

At night they set you a camping spot for you and cook dinner which is amazing as well (chicken by the fire in a Badawen way).

Stargazing is highly recommended especially past 9:30 where the moon disappears and all you see is the Milky-way. Badween tea was offered at night time when we all sat circular by the fire.

It was a little bit hot because we went in May, would recommend going in the winter.

You need to be prepared for using the old fashioned toilet behind a rock or something and bring with u water, sunscreen cus you’ll need a lot of it

Other than that it was a really nice experience for me and this was the first camping/dessert experience! would recommend going.

Amazing trip to the black and white desert arranged by Alaa and his team!! Visited a lot of impressive scenic spot along the way. The team built the tent and set up the campfire while we were enjoying the sunset, then prepared the best barbecue chicken and delicious rice!! Also the breakfast for the 2nd day was great too!

Special thanks to Alaa’s hard work for preparing the camp equipment after driving us 8 hours back from Siwa Oasis, which was also a PERFECT 4 days tour arranged by him:)), the day before we set out the desert camping. Alaa is very kind, super easy to communicate and considerate to the details, in order to make sure the tour is nice for everyone!

Would definitely recommend all my friends to book the tour when traveling in Egypt!

We had an amazing experience with Alaa and his brother Mahmoud.

They were very kind taking us to amazing spots, sandboarding and camping.
In the camp they set the tent for us and cooked an incredible dinner while we were enjoying the most beautiful sunset and then the sky with the most stars I’ve ever seen.

When we woke up the breakfast was already ready and delicious.

Everything was very comfortable and cozy. They made us feel very at ease.
Transpostrtion was also very good. A colleague of Alaa’s picked us up in Cairo at 7am and drove us for 4 hours to meet him at his village. There, we had lunch cooked by them and then we went to black desert and later white desert.

Thank you Alaa and Mahmoud for the unforgettable experience.

If you are traveling to Egypt you should do this tour.

This was the best moments in Egypt. The experience consists of a visit to the superb black desert. The views are amazing. Then a little trip to the crystal mountain is made, where all kinds of crystal formations make stunning sculptures. Lastly, but not least, the day ends with a visit to the White Desert. This desert is huge and the size of the stone formations are fascinating. The sunset from the desert is really good too. At the end you sleep under billions and billions of stars shining in the sky. All this accompanied with a nice talk with Alaa around the firewood, who, of course, takes care of everything.

Alaa, the tour guide, puts all his effort and passion into showing around the area. He is very kind and quite generous. He is really skilled and knows all the area by heart. You will be in hands of a professional, well prepared, honest, efficient man, but most important: cares about his customers. He really makes a hotel for you in the desert.

This was one of the best experiences of my life.

We had a fabulous trip to the White and Black Deserts with Alaa and his team in Feb. 2023. We were taken to the most beautiful sceneries and were offered excellent diner,
and breakfast. The diner was freshly prepared and we ate around a lovely camp fire. Breakfast was equally great and exceeded our expectations. We watched the sunset from his camp at the end of our first day and the sunrise the following day.
We must add that we made the error of paying for 3 days instead of 2 and left. The HONEST Alaa called us to reimburse the difference and he actually went through a lot of hassles with the Egyptian banks to repay us. There are no words that can express how we felt at that point.
We wish we could provide more stars than 5 to Alaa and his team. If we have the chance again we would certainly go back with Alaa and his team to any and every trip in Egypt.
We recommend you have lots of layers as it was very cold at night and very pleasant during the day. Thank you Alaa and keep up this excellent work.

We had an amazing time visiting the white and black desert with Alaa and his brother. The drive from Cairo to Bahariya was quite long (four and a half hours) but was made very comfortable in a nice modern car with AC and a great driver (such a refresher from the terrible riding experience in Cairo). We met Alaa around noon time at a restaurant in Bahariya, and had a delicious lunch, before changing into an SUV and heading into the desert. In the afternoon, we saw the black desert, crystal mountains, the white desert, a nice cave, and did sandboarding. Each stop was unique and a lot of fun, and Alaa let us take our time to explore and enjoy ourselves. Before sunset, we arrived at our camp site. Alaa and his brother built the tent, set up the camp fire, and cooked an amazing dinner for us: the most delicious grilled chicken I’ve ever had, tasty homemade vegetable stew, and flavorful rice and soup. After dinner, we sat by the camp fire, had tea and some nice chat with Alaa, and saw some beautiful stars. It got a bit cold at night (remember to bring heavy coats for the night and early morning!), but the tent and sleep bag kept us warm. Next morning, we woke up and saw the sunrise, and had a nice breakfast, lots of options and fresh fruits. We ended the trip with a lunch at Alana’s house, before heading back to Cairo. It was overall a really great experience, and we enjoyed every part of it (except for the long drives, but that’s inevitable), highly recommend!

I just got back to my hotel in Cairo and all I can talk about is the trip of a lifetime my wife and I had with Alaa in the White Desert. Because there’s so much I loved, I’m going to give you my top 5.

#1 Camping underneath the thousands of stars in the night sky

#2 Waking up early to catch the sunrise that will take your breathe away

#3 Sand-boarding down the Sahara dunes

#4 Climbing to the top of one of the mountains in the Black Desert for a panoramic view

#5 Watching a sunset that you’ll never ever forget

Alaa made us feel right at home. He cooked a wonderful dinner and breakfast, and we felt like family.

This is a trip of a lifetime that I hope everyone gets to experience at least once.

I cannot say enough good things about Alaa and our tour experience. Alaa and his team took care of us and took every necessary step to give us (a group of 9 people) an amazing journey from start to finish. We began our experience with a 5 hour drive for lunch at Bahariya Oasis. The food was fabulous, almost surprisingly better than much of the food I have back home. After lunch, Alaa and his team took us on a once in a lifetime experience through the black desert, crystal mountain, El Aqapt, old white desert and the new white desert, also known as mushroom valley. We began setting up camp in the new white desert, where we were able to watch the sunset and stare in awe at the desert stars around a fire pit while Alaa and his team cooked us an authentic Egyptian dinner. His knowledge of the deserts and his talent for finding the perfect places for photos are unsurpassed. He actually refers to these deserts as his 2nd home. We highly recommend the tour experience with Alaa and could not be happier with the great memories we made together.

Ala was amazing! He had a driver pick me up from the Marriott Mesa hotel where I was staying and drive me to Bawiti, where I met him and had lunch. We then set out for the desert and visited Black Desert Mountain followed Crystal Mountain and off to the New White Desert. We went to several popular spots including the Mushroom before finding a campsite for the night. As Ala set up camp and got dinner ready, I wondered around finding the perfect spots to watch the sunset surrounded by the amazing landscape. I then got up at 5:20am to catch the early light before Sunrise and I wondered around finding various places to take pictures as the sun rose above the horizon. Breakfast was ready when I came back to camp and after eating and packing up, we ventured to the Old White Desert.

My friends and I went on the black and white desert tour with Alaa and his brother Mahmoud for 3 days/2 nights at the beginning of March. We initially signed up for the 2 days/1 night trip but changed to having an extra day at the recommendation of Alaa - definitely worth it if you have the time!
The trip schedule was packed with stops at many great spots where we could climb to high areas for panoramic views, or search for interesting looking rocks and shark teeth, as well as sandboarding down sand dunes. Alaa and Mahmoud were adaptive in regards to the schedule and our personal interests (we are geologists so it was great to have more opportunity to look at rocks!), which was very much appreciated. They also provided everything we required during the trip, including an option to sleep in the large tent (4 people/2 couples) or individual tents (1 couple per tent), with amazing food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If there are 4 of you try to pack light as there is not much space in the car with all the rest of the equipment. In March at night it can get cold in the desert so also make sure to pack some warm jumpers if traveling around this time of year.
Alaa speaks English very well and was responsive on Whatsapp prior to the trip, answering all the many questions that I had.
Overall my friends and I had an amazing experience in the desert with Alaa and Mahmound and would highly recommend it if you are traveling to Egypt!
