About
In this workshop, I will not only teach you how to write beautifully, but also how to experience the joy of carving a handcrafted seal. You will create a design using your name with an engraving knife on a small stone. During this activity, your mind will relax, and you will experience healing through the slow analog, tactile sensibility of everyday life. First, I show two ways to engrave the seal and demonstrate how to carve with a carving knife. Next, I show the way to design the names and help to design according to syllable of name. You go for it and then cover with ink of Korean style and take a stamp. Once the engraving is over, you can choose an elegant case for your stone seal. When you return home, you'll enjoy looking at the stamp you carved and remembering your travels. I'll write down a message for you in K-calligraphy after you have stamped your seal on a postcard I prepare.

    Very authentic and memorable experience
It was a pleasure being taught Korean calligraphy by Jeongju. She is a very kind and patient teacher who really wants you to understand the history of the language. I’m very fortunate to have come across her workshop and would strongly recommend it to anyone visiting.

I recommend this activity just to meet JEONGJU KIM, a very nice person !
Great experience! I was delighted to practice this type of artistic activity! JEONGJU KIM is a superb person, she is kind, warm, understanding and attentive! She even allowed me to come back the next day to rewrite the parchment that I lost in the metro! I recommend this activity just to meet JEONGJU KIM!

This was an amazing experience, I shared with two other visitors. The carving to place in a quiet and inspiring workshop. I enjoyed this creative break. Jeong Ju gave us a introduction in the art of carving a stone seal, it's history and meaning. After some exercise she helped us with the individual design and carving of our seal. She did it in a very professional and understanding way, I enjoyed verry much. We even got a kalligraphy with our seal printed on. Both are a beautyful reminded of this special moments in Seoul.

Helen has a wealth of knowledge and was generous to share her love of stone seal carving with me. I much prefer having done this over buying a stamp at one of the stores. Makes a more memorable and personal experience!

Meeting outside the station was extremely easy. I received a warm welcome by Mrs. Helen. She made the class was fun and informative. We offered tea and cookies. We learned about the origin of the stamp and how it is used currently. In addition, we were given ample time to practice our designs and create stamp. She also welcomed any questions about Korean culture. Highly recommend!!!

This was an amazing workshop. Helen was so sweet and was a very good teacher. I loved that after the class, I had my own hand-made souvenir to take home. I also appreicated connecting with more of the history of Seoul and the traditions. Not only was the class executed and taught very well, but Helen served yummy tea and cookies that I also enjoyed. It was also a greate opportunity to meet other travelers. I would definitely recommed this class, it was one of the highlights of my trip!

Carving a seal seemed like an activity that my 80-year old mom and I could enjoy together. Helen's (not sure of her Korean name) studio is on the 3rd floor, but Mom just took her time getting up the stairs. Sorry, no elevator.

A couple from Belgium and a Korean-American from Chicago also took part in the workshop. Fun international interaction-- the Belgium lady and my mom had K-dramas in common. Lol

Helen served us her favorite camellia tea and shared (with a slideshow) some of the history of seal use in Korea as well as her own background. She has even written a book about how learning to carve seals and do traditional calligraphy helped pull her out of a depression. (It's in Korean so..)

She gave us step-by-step instructions with a written handout/worksheet. All tools, equipment, and supplies were provided. We practiced making lines, dots, and circles on the side of our seal stones first. We, then, used the worksheet to draw our design. We could do it in the English alphabet, Korean, or even Chinese characters. Helen helped my mom write her name in Korean.

The whole workshop took about 2-2.5 hours. Helen was attentive, positive, and encouraging. She was always ready to help with whatever aspect we needed, from advice on the best way to proceed to hands-on carving of a particularly difficult spot. At the end, she made a card for each of us with the message of our choice, which she wrote in traditional Korean calligraphy.

By the end of the workshop, we had a lovely card, our very own hand-carved seal, and wonderful memories to take away with us.
