About
A professional English speaking tour guide will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to the killing fields of Choeung Ek Genocide Center – 9 miles away south of Phnom Penh. The infamous killing fields have a bloody history. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, the Khmer Rouge, lead by Pol Pot, turned the place into what became known as the killing fields, where they executed around 20.000 victim. Over three years, they massacred and buried 2.5 million people. After remembering the dead, return to Phnom Penh to visit Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Meaning hill of the poisonous trees, Pol Pot turned a once popular high school into a high security prison. 20,000 people were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today it serves as a museum and a reminder of darker days. Your guide will return you to your hotel or guesthouse. .

Eye opening
Feb. 2020
Great but somber tour. Really recommend going. It's weird to say "I had such a good time" viewing things which are very depressive but it really is eye opening to see what we keep doing in history, and this one not too long ago.

People should be speaking about this a lot more and paying attention to the warning signs as it happens again and again in history.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia_The Killing Field and Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) Tour
Mar. 2020
This tour was great, highly recommend it especially with TripAdvisor.
You're picked up and dropped off and the vehicle is air-conditioned (which is needed.. lol).
The guide was a pleasure and very knowledgeable not only about the sites but the economy and areas we drove by with lots of construction.
This tour is an excellent level of background to Cambodia terrible and tragic past.
For families with fairly young children (maybe under 10 or 12) the Museum can be a lot to take-in and gruesome. It can be an eye-opener about the tragic history and a humbling expeience.
I'm really glad I took the time to learn about it.
Great tour for Families, couples, friends, solo (I was solo).

Unflinching and necessary
The guide for the Killing Fields and S-21 provided an excellent level of background and context to Cambodia's brutal past. It's a necessary thing to do but with a harrowing amount of detail; it leaves you with an understanding of what happened, ghastly as it was.

Moving Visit
Feb. 2020
Visiting the S21 detention center was quite moving especially the cells were prisoners were kept and the photos of them. We bought a book, translated into English, written by a survivor.
All in all, a moving experience. I suggest visiting on your own and spend a few hours there.

challenging and disturbing view into the genocide
Mar. 2020
A very challenging site to visit. the cruelty meted out here was horrendous and the fact that it was in the 70s makes it even more disturbing. There is not a huge amount to see (thank heavens) but the few areas that have been left undisturbed paint an awful picture. I visited Auschwitz a couple of years back and somehow this is a scale worse in terms of its inhumanity.

Very interesting
Feb. 2020 • Solo
This was a very interesting experience where I learned a lot about an important part of the Cambodian history. The guide was excellent and told the story with a lot of emotion.

Sometimes you need to look at the past to understand the present.

Highly recommend!

Emotional visit
Our guide Sem Visal was excellent.
Answered all al our questions, was able to give us more context on the events and important figures of the time. Was engaged with out 11 yrs old son and answeres his questions appropriately.
Logistics wise: well organized. It will last all morning. You should be done around noon. So do have breakfast before leaving and expect to have lunch after the tour. You get picked up and dropped off at your hotel. there are free cold water bottles in the van. As described, you pay the entry fees.
On a personal note, when organizing our trip to Cambodia, we consciously chose to go to Phnom Penh and take this tour at the beginning of our trip. I don’t regret that. I’m still digesting all of it.

Excellent and very informative tour
This was an excellent and very informative tour.

The subject matter is pretty sensitive in nature. There is a lot of information that is difficult to hear and see. Our tour guide Wasil was excellent at not only showing and telling us all about what happened during the KR regime, but did so and made us feel comfortable while doing so.

This is a very important part of Cambodia's history and I believe that the tour guide did an excellent job to not only open our eyes to this country's brutal past, but also was open and very happy to talk about the daily lives of Cambodian citizens and how things are now.

I highly recommend booking this tour
