      Amazing and creative experience
Enjoyed drawing a lot! The teacher taught me how to draw and I could have an amazing experience! It takes several days to receive so I recommend to visit at the beginning of your trip!

      HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Pottery painting was so fun. highly recommend!! We have been advised how to use things properly, there was a lovely lady giving us tipps. Mistakes can be removed easily with water only ;-) Please go visit the shop at least once when in Hanoi. It's a must :-)

      Fun and convenient activity!
Fun and we were able to collect our pottery within 2 days! We were given many options for things to paint on and there was a good choice of colours too. The staff was really friendly and helpful as well. :) Plus a great excuse to get out of the Hanoi summer sun.

      A must try!
My friend and I started the day with pottery lessons which was fun and engaging. Hang was great at what she does best. The owner was very accommodating and discussed so many information as well as history of the village and design. We ended up buying some items at the Ceramic Market. I recommend the tour with 5 star.

      Fun experience
My son and daughter went to have a 2.5hours painting class. The teacher was very patient teaching the kids. They can paint different types of pottery they want instead of only one. And you can choose buy or not after the class. The kids enjoyed so much and at last we bought all of them . All the staffs are friendly and helpful . Highly recommend .

Insightful and interesting experience of Vietnam’s local craftsmanship
I met my tour leader at the Authentic Bat Trang shop in the Old Quarter at 8:30AM to begin the tour (I went the night before to confirm that the meeting point was here as there was no other confirmation/communication before the tour began). The tour had two parts: a ceramics workshop at the upper level of the shop, and a visit to the Bat Trang village (40 min drive away from the Old Quarter). In the workshop, I had the hands-on experience of making the ceramics ware with guidance from the staff. I found this to be quite fun but also quite challenging (and I got wet clay/mud all over me by accident 😀 so maybe don’t wear your favourite clothes to the workshop). The staff/instructor was skilled and knowledgeable in their craft and they helped me when I couldn’t understand how to do something. This was very fun (would recommend if you like hands-on and crafts). There was also a pottery painting session after this workshop but since my tour had a travelling component I left the workshop early to go to the village. A nice thing with this workshop was that you get to keep all the things you made (they would fire and glaze your stuff and you can pick it up in 2–3 days, so it might be helpful to book this activity at the start of your Hà Nội trip to give the staff enough time to finish your ceramics for pickups a few days later). For the second part of my tour, the tour leader chartered a car taking us to Bat Trang which is a village southeast of Hà Nội CBD specialising in traditional Vietnamese ceramics. According to the tour leader, typically his tour might have up to around 10—12 people a time although I was the only one on this particular day so I did get a one-on-one experience with the guide. The tour leader has 25 years of experience with ceramic craftsmanship and is the owner of the shop in the Old Quarter and co-owner of one of the ceramics factories in the village. He was very knowledgeable in providing the history of the village and the crafts, and the processes of ceramics making (I won’t give you more spoilers as this was a very insightful experience best done in-person on-site 😉). As I could speak Vietnamese so we had conversation in Vietnamese, however the tour leader and all staff members could speak both English and Vietnamese (as from my workshop experience) so that was helpful if you don’t know Vietnamese. Lunch was provided by the tour and we ate at one of the restaurants in the village before exploring other parts of the village. I was guided to the narrow meandering passageway of the village, learning a bit more about the history of the village from my guide, and seeing the daily life/livelihood of the locals. I got to see the "đình" which is a gathering place in traditional Vietnamese villages (similar to a town hall or a community centre), overlooking the Red River. Then finally I got to see the ceramics market in the village although my guide told me the market would be more lively on the weekend in the morning (probably this would be a better time to visit this market). My tour finished around 2PM and we returned to the Authentic Bat Trang shop in the Old Quarter. I think overall I really enjoyed this experience, particularly getting to make my own ceramics (and getting getting to keep them, will be collecting them in a few days) but also more importantly getting to see the faces behind the products you see on the shelf in souvenir shops around Hà Nội, getting to see these products coming to life. It was also heartwarming to see the artisan’s passion for their crafts, and their struggle/determination to preserve their crafts in modern time. If you like to experience something slightly off the beaten track and seeing a little bit more of local life, then this tour is for you.

      CERAMIC HEAVEN
If you are interested in Ceramics this is a great place to visit. We arranged a driver through our hotel to take us out there as it is a wee drive. There is so much to see whether you are a private individual or looking for commercial opportunities. Much of the work is classical and ornate but there is also some modern domestic wear. Very interesting and enjoyable

Fun activity and tour to escape the streets of Hanoi!
A fun experience and activity to do in Hanoi as a way to get away from the bustling city! Our tour guide was really helpful and friendly in his guide. We visited a lot of factories and stores that had different pottery specialities such as being handmade, hand painted or specialising in producing specific goods. I also had the chance to buy a ceramic good from one of the stores. We had a choice betweeb Banh Cuon or Bun Cha for lunch and we chose the former. We appreciate the variety they provide, as well as the service of pick up and drop off. We also got the opportunity to make our own pottery using a wheel and we made 6 in total between 2 people. They provide shipping of our goods once they have finished glazing and baking them. We had a lot of fun seeing the ancient village and the village overall. The history was explained really well and the tour guide was very helpful!

Perfect class. The cost for a family of 4 was what one class cost in the US. They allowed you to make as much as you wanted. The first item was in included, each item after was $5 for them to fire.

Wonderful little shop and great workshop
We booked the workshop online already in 2 months advance and then noted down the wrong timing. We arrived as the workshop has already ended. Nevertheless thanks to the owner we still were allowed to do the class even being way to late. We really enjoyed the class and learned a lot! He even shipped our products to the hotel we stayed next in Hoi An. All went perfectly well! Thanks for this wonderful experience!

price is steep at 35usd for a supposed 3hour class. our class turned out to be just 2.5h (class started late and ended early). brochure said that we would get to experience painting and glazing clay, but we only got to paint. the instructor said that he would bring our pottery back home for glazing instead. disappointing. quite an interesting experience but it is a simple workshop, not worth the price.

Dear audsonomer, Thank you very much for taking time and share your experience about bat trang pottery class in hanoi old quarter on Tripadvisor, We are very sorry because some thing is not clearly make you unhappy with our service, We are really sorry about that, We just want to explan and hope you can understand us, -For the time: We set for 3 hours, some customer can do more some customer do less, but for us is no problem, if you take more time and longer is ok, We don't tell you to stop earlier, In the class, you book a same time ( not make booking in advance, so our teacher need more time to go from bat trang village to Hanoi - 45 minutes, that why we start late) -For the price, 35$ is very high, we know, but compare with the customer get, you can see, 35$ include products to fire ( if you don't wait for firing, you can get products for the shop 5-7$, The teacher come from the village it is so far also, that is cost more money, the room, the electric wheel, ligh , clay .... Hope that you will understand for us, For the glazing: We are very sorry for miss understanding, include glaze, it mean your products will be glazed before firing, that we need to bring to factory in bat trang and we glaze it, We just want to bring more experience for customer when they visit hanoi, let more people in the world know our famous bat trang pottery village and know how to make products as well Thank you very much for your feedback, your ideas will help us to improve our service, Have a good trip audsonomer, Hope we can have chance to server you again, Thank you very much Authentic bat trang team Thank you very much for review,

From start to finish this pottery class was amazing. The guys really cares about giving us time and providing a professional service.

We started out watching how the professional pottery maker works the clay and very quickly we were on the wheels ourselves. The guys gave us so much attention it really was a private lesson in pottery!

After creating numerous objects (I made a mug, bowl and plate) they asked which prices we wanted to fire up in the kiln. Offering a complimentary piece,. They even gave us the choice on how we would like the set to look.

After around 5 days the items we had made were sent to our hotel. The owner of the class was always in communication and really was fantastic.

Our 3 kids always wanted to try ceramics , was glad to find that Bat trang Pottery offers classes in the Hanoi old quater , rather than travelling all the way out. We also decided to join in with the kids to make some ceramics. So we had that session all by ourselves!
The pottery teacher was very skillful and very helpful when needed assistance. Kids really enjoyed the entire sessions. They wanted to make more! We were suppose to make one item each. At the end we did 13 different items , bowls, mug ( with 2 handles) sakai bottle, vase , plates. Waited for a few days before we were able to collect the final product. Was so excited to see the final product. It turned out just as we wanted! Thank you for such a memorable experience and wonderful souvenir to take home!!!

We had a family morning in the ceramic workshop in the Old Quarter. Our three year old loved it, and was aided very attentatively by Sony. The painting was her favorite part, though we wished there had been brighter colors like yellows and blues to paint with. We will definitely be back for more pottery and painting. Sony also offers pre-made pots for handpainting and glazing in case the pottery making is too intimidating.

I had a wonderful time at this workshop in the Old Quarter and the ceramic shop was unique. The owner, who grew up in Bac Trang Pottery Village, hosted the workshop. Initially, we gathered at the ceramics store and were led around the corner to a secret alley where the ceramics studio was located. The host demonstrated how to make a cup, vase, bowl, and plate within seconds, and it was like magic! We all had our own motorized turntables, and the host went around helping each of us create our pieces. We had 4-5 hours to make as many pieces as we wanted, and later we could choose which ones to fire/glaze and take home. The workshop includes one free ceramic, and any others are about $5 USD per piece extra. However, you need to stay in Hanoi for a few days for them to fire and glaze your pieces. If you don't have plans to stay in Hanoi, you can also choose pieces in the shop to bring home or have them shipped to you. After a long trip in the North, I picked up my pieces weeks later, and they came out beautifully with a lovely stamp at the bottom marking the shop and memory. This is an authentic experience that you should try while in Hanoi, especially on a rainy day.

It was a great experience , the instructor was patient and super helpful even though we kept messing up the clay. We managed to do many pieces and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. They were very accommodating to us as we were flying back a few days later, they made the effort to rush our pieces to fire it for us to bring it back in time!! He Eve personally brought it down to our hotel :’) Highly recommend it’s super worth!!

The whole experience from start to finish was an absolute blast. We were shown the ropes by experienced people learning how to make cups, bowls and plates. While they made it look so easy, half the fun was experimenting and learning as you went! Would absolutely recommend for anyone looking for a great experience in Hanoi, in addition to taking home some cherished self made souvenirs!

My husband and I had a great morning taking a wheel-throwing class. The instructor was patient and there were three other people, so 5 in the experience total. The instructor centered the clay for the participants on the wheel and then guided them along the process of creating a piece; opening the clay, pulling the clay up, and shaping the clay. We threw a few pieces until we were ready to stop and choose one to be fired and glazed. For a small extra cost, you can take home more than one of your pieces.

A few days later we were able to pick up our final pieces! I am impressed by how quickly they were glazed and fired. Tony, who works at the shop, is friendly and knowledgable and I loved learning a little about the village of Bat Trang and that my husband and I were able to return home with actual finished ceramic pieces from our pottery class experience. Highly recommended if you want to get clay on your hands or try wheel throwing. Beautiful glaze selection, too!

I am also glad I had the insight to do this early on our Hanoi adventure, as the pieces we made still took a few days to finish on Authentic Bat Trang's end with the firing and glazing. Thank you for a unique experience!

My husband and I did the full day factory and village tour followed by the pottery class. It was one of our highlights in Vietnam. Sony was a great host and tour guide - very patient, knowledgable and excellent English speaking. The local lunch was delicious. The potttery class is sure to release your inner creativity and we brought home several pieces of our own making which we treasure and are proud of. You will need to allow three days post workshop for your masterpieces to be glazed and be confident it will be well wrapped safely for you travels. Thank you Sonny for the experience!

This class was so interesting! The person leading the class was very knowledgeable and helpful. She guided us to making some great pots and different items.

Would recommend this tour is booked as soon as you can in Hanoi as you are able to keep the items you make (this takes 3-4 days for firing). Unfortunately, as we came on our last day in Hanoi, we couldn’t do this, but instead we were able to get an item from the shop of an equivalent value as a souvenir from the experience.

Would really recommend this experience as it was so fun! Great value for money!
