Very nice trip to a really interesting historical destination about an hour outside of Bangkok. Our guide picked us up at our hotel right on time (a bit early actually) and we had a very comfortable ride in a big van to our destinations.

Our first stop was at Summer Palace, which honestly, we could have skipped. It's fairly modern and very European, like a 1/10th size Versailles, but we couldn't go into any of the buildings.

We then went to several different areas of Ayutthaya, the ancient Siamese capital. It was an interesting walk through history, but it should be noted that the Burmese did an exceptional job of burning it, so it is little more than crumbling ruins. Still impressive, but you have to use your imagination to understand what it would have looked like in its splendor.

David did a good job of providing that context and showing us the most interesting aspects of the sites. Without him, I think much of it would have been lost on us, so definitely recommend having a professional guide.

David himself admitted that his English was rusty after having not used it in two years, but it improved as the day went on. (Note that Thailand was just opening when we went, which meant most of the tourist infrastructure was also just waking up, but also that the sites we visited were largely empty -- we practically had the Summer Palace all to ourselves)

Final note, the lunch was one of my favorite of our entire trip. We ate at a noodle soup shop that made a magnificent soup seasoned with cinnamon, cloves, five spice, and other warm spices. Different than anything we'd had and marvelous.

All went according to plan. Our guide (Sam) and the driver arrived promptly with a clean and spacious vehicle.

As Sam is an official tour guide, he was able to arrange for the purchase of tickets without us having to stand in line.

He explained the history and background of the Summer Palace and three significant temple sites, taking our pictures at various spots so we could have have memories without needing to ask strangers to manage our camera.

Between temple visits we ate lunch at a (mostly locals) restaurant, all included in the tour cost. We chose our meals from the extensive a la carte menu. He even suggested some appetizers and desserts for us to try.

We were picked up at our hotel at 9am and returned about 3:30. A terrific day learning about Thailand's history and seeing sites that will be memories for a lifetime!

Faultless organisation and a friendly but polite approach, well timed, with comfortable, quality transport.
Mr A, ably assisted by newbie guide and occasional pack-carrier Mary, gave an informative and clear commentary and kept things running smoothly. Questions, sensible or otherwise, were quickly answered, apart from the daft request for sticky rice cooked in bamboo... but they tried their best!
The lunch provided was more than adequate in both quantity and quality, and not too long.
Driver Joke was prompt, smooth and unobtrusive, allowing a little undisturbed dozing on the return journey.
It may be more costly than a group tour, but you definitely get what you pay for when you hire the A-Team.

(Oh, yes....the historical sites are pretty good too)

This was our third visit to Bangkok, so we had already visited many of the famous tourist attractions of the city. The nice and helpful conceirge in Easton hotel suggested this tour and booked us a place for the next day. We were picked up right on time. All throughout the trip the very efficient English-speaking guide, Petch, explained everything. The driver was also very nice. The tour lasted for 8 hours. All in all, and we had a great journey, we enjoyed ourselves and learned a lot.

We did a day tour to the Summer Palace and Ayutthaya. The sites were well worth the trip but I was very disappointed with our guide when all was said and done. I won't dwell on that other than to say I wish I'd used TripAdvisor rather than take a referral from an acquaintance. Check prices and recommendations. I didn't and I overpaid for poor English and little information.

As far as the sites go the Summer Palace is a huge Versaille like complex with water features, gardens and many beautiful buildings. You can easily imagine the royal family decamping the heat and getting away there. It's large, but a tour is a manageable walk in 60-90 minutes.

The thing I'd tell you about Ayutthaya is that it turns out that term describes a whole region. There's tons you can see in it. Mostly ruins, but grand impressive ones. The thing is, there's far too much to see in a day. So if you're on a day trip, you sort of need to pick the highlights (again highlighting the value of a quality guide). If you can do a little research in advance and have a couple points you want to make the focus of your tour, all the better.

We had a wonderful private tour with Sam to Ayutthaya and the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace from Bangkok. We flew in to Don Mueang Airport from Phuket and Sam and the driver picked us up from there to take us to the sites. Both sites are VERY special and we were able to ask many questions and take a lot of pictures. Sam was very friendly, knowledgeable, and patient. The driver was also excellent and delivered us safely to all sites and to our hotel. The van was very clean and comfortable. Overall we give the tour 5 stars and highly recommend it to our fellow travelers!
