Fantastic experience!
Nov. 2021 • Couples
Not only did we have a wonderful trip to the top of the volcano for magnificent stargazing and spectacular sunrise, but Billy gave us a fabulous native- islander perspective on the preservation of the island's natural beauty and its unique challenges. The ride was as thrilling as you want to make it, or simply safe and leisurely. Absolutely beautiful!

Great views & fun ride!
We did the self-guided tour that started at 0930. Took us about 1 1/2 hrs to ride down. The ride up is a shuttle van and Kimo showed us interesting sights and even stopped to eat fresh guava and fennel off the road. The bikes are multispeed mountain bikes and in okay condition (mine made a loud cranking noise when I peddled), but you pretty much coast or ride the brakes all the way down. Kimo gave easy to remember directions to navigate the 23 mile ride down. Great sights of the ranch & ocean. Saw a lot of animals on the way down too. We were lucky with sunny warm weather, but it's common to be windy and rainy so bring extra layers in a small backpack just in case. Fun adventure!

Our trip/tour was on 10-28-21 Kimo , our guide was very knowable about all Hawaiian activities and very funny on our bus ride up the mountain to almost the top of Haleakala. Highly recommend using this company for great biking experience. 5 star !

Best bikes on Maui!! Just do it!
Oct. 2021 • Couples
We did the 9:30 am your and it was Freaking amazing!! The views were breath taking as well as the trek down the winding roads! I’m a thrill seeker and this met every expectation I had hoped for. Bike maui provides you with book bags, helmets and rain gear. We got a little wet on the way down but made the experience so much more fun. You can literally travel at your own pace and stop at the lodge and restaurants on the way down the mountain to eat and sight see. Our tour guide/bus driver on the way up the mountain was hilarious and full of dad jokes. He helped make the drive up even more pleasurable. I definitely recommend this to couples, families or even solo.

A great way to see and experience all of Maui
Jun. 2021
We took the self-guided express tour because it was a lot cheaper than the one that goes all the way to the top. I am not sure whether we missed something spectacular with that choice, but sleep was an important factor. One tip -- the clouds tend to roll in mid-morning, so earlier is better. The first couple of miles of our journey were in the fog, which was a pretty cool experience, but if you are looking for vistas from the top, earlier is better.

When we arrived at the bike shop, they outfitted us with all the gear we needed - jackets and helmets mainly. We all got onto the bus with a bunch of strangers, and luckily, none of us got COVID. We had a wonderful driver who entertained us with funny and factual stories the entire way to the top. Once we got to the top, which is not actually the tip top, we were given bikes. The bikes were good quality and in great shape. They had spare bikes in case the size wasn't right.

At the start, they took some entertaining photos of the families and then sent us on our way. They had a guide map so we would not get lost, and there were staff in cars nearby that we could call in case someone got hurt.

The ride down was fantastic. As mentioned, we started in fog, but soon dropped below the cloud layer. It was nice to be self-guided because we could go at our own pace. We stopped several times for photos and to admire the views. You can see all of the north and south central part of Maui.

There were several options for places to stop along the way. We stopped at a store for some snacks and to eat some of the food that we brought. Most of the ride is downhill, but there are a few brief uphill or mostly flat parts where you have to pedal. Overall, it took us a couple of hours to get back to the bike shop, but if you were in a hurry and did not stop for pictures, you could do it in 90 minutes or less.

Overall, I would highly recommend this trip. It was worth the money and the time, and I would do it again given the chance.

Fantastic experience!
Aug. 2021 • Couples
This bike ride was my favorite thing that my husband and I did on Maui! Seeing the sunrise over Haleakala was incredible, and the 22 mile bike ride down was so much fun! The scenery is unparalleled, and Billy was an excellent tour guide before we got on the bikes. It really is cold on the volcano before the sun comes up, around 40 degrees, so keep that in mind. 10/10, would recommend and would do it again!

A highlight of our vacationn
Aug. 2021
During two weeks in Maui this experience was a highlight. The views are spectacular, the equipment is safe and well maintained, and the staff is professional and gives solid coaching to keep all the riders safe and make the bike ride a whole lot of fun!

I was a bit hesitant as I'm not comfortable with heights. In my attempt to continually overcome this fear I always challenge myself to get outside of my comfort zone. Yes, this girl with a fear of heights has ziplined and crossed suspension bridges, but I digress. I felt well instructed and safe and it was great fun.

I was in Maui the first week with my husband and the second week with our young adult kids. The tour was a highlight of our Maui vacation. We met at the bike shop at 9:30 a.m. and were driven to 6500 elevation. The summit is 10,000. We were transported to the start point in an air conditioned van. Our guide was Coach, a wonderful tour guide and retired football coach who gave us safety tips, told great stories about the island, and provided a whole lot of laughs on the way up. He gave us great verbal cues on how to remember the self guided route down. "Always turn right at the fork in the road" was the best way to remember the route.

It is 28 miles downhill. It took us three hours because we stopped to take photos at vistas, stopped for a bathroom break, and stopped for lunch. The speed is thrilling, the views are spectacular and the weather was comfortable. I layered with shorts, a short sleeved shirt, and a half zip. By mid ride I took off the half zip. They provide motorcycle helmets and a backpack or you can bring our own. There is a nice clean bathroom stop on the way down at a cute little shop and you can stop for lunch. We stopped at a food truck park and had a great lunch in the shade.

When I did this the second week with my three more daring twenty something kids we finished in an hour and a half and enjoyed the thrill of the speed while staying safe and stopping a couple of times to take photos of beautiful vistas. Totally different experience one week later with the kids seeing it through their more youthful perspective.

I highly recommend this company for their professional staff, safe biking equipment, and great tour guide Coach. Five out of five on all counts! Well done Bike Maui.

Fun exciting family activity
Aug. 2021 • Family
Loved the self-guided bike tour. We were a family of 5 ages 13-51 with 3 of us on a mountain bike team. One of our 13yr old girls hadn't riden a bike in a while so we were a little worried the guided tour would be too much pressure on her to go faster. The self-guided was the way to go for us. Our 3 fast ones went ahead and would stop every couple of pull-outs for the rest of family to catch up. So this met all experience levels.
Road down the steepest parts was wide and didn't have many cars. Ample signs along the way to watch for bikes. It did get a little busier when we neared the town but we never felt intimidated by the cars. They passed at a slow and safe distance. There is also enough room on the shoulder to pull over anytime you want. I wouldn't recommend biking fast in the shoulder due to rocks and other debris.
We did see a teen in front of us wipe out. It looked like she rode over some roads/dirt and lost control. Her mom called bike company immediately and they were on their way when we left after giving bandaids and sanitizer wipes.
I thought the price was fair. Bikes were better than we thought they might be. Van driver told stories and pointed out some things on the way up.
The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because the van had no AC. It was in the high 80s and very hot inside during the entire ride.
I was also glad I had a sweater - it was pretty cold at the top.

Great tour, bring water
Aug. 2021 • Family
Well organized, good instruction, great guide/driver, we had a great time. My only recommendation...the tour company provided a list of things to bring on the tour and water/snacks weren’t included on the list. As such, we assumed they would provide water and snacks - which they didn’t. With the tour being 4+ hours in the sun, make sure to BRING WATER. There is a grocery store next to the tour company office, so fortunately we were able to buy some water.

Don't Do This Unless You're An Experienced Road Biker!
Aug. 2021
I did the Haleakala sunrise ride back in the late 1990s and thought it was one of the highlights of visiting Maui. So I encouraged my family to do it 25 years later. Bad idea. My sister-in-law broke 3 ribs and had to be hospitalized. My teenage daughter fell off her bike and hit her head on one of the railings on the side of the road. There is no shoulder or bike lane, you are sharing the road with cars going up and down hairpin turns, and you are going very fast as the entire ride is downhill. It's not a strenuous ride because there is little peddling, but I didn't recall it being so harrowing. I did hear that Maui was busier than ever when we went (summer of 2021 just as Hawaii was opening back up after the pandemic). I think it was better in the 1990s because Maui was less busy with fewer cars back then and we could use the whole road with no cars passing by versus this time where we had to hug the side of the road with cars passing by. My brother who is an experienced road biker thought in the first few minutes "this is really for road bikers, not novices." His advice was to go slow, ride the brakes the whole time and keep a long distance between riders. No one at the biking company checked to verify our skills and they didn't check in on my sister-in-law after they got their bike and helmet back. If you are an experienced biker, it's a lovely ride, especially in the day. You'll enjoy going at your own pace and stopping when you want. But don't do this if it's the first time you've ever ridden a bike on a road next to cruising cars.
