About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- JoeT940300 contributionsGreat locally-sourced food and beverages and an enthusiastic tour guide make Kona Tasting Tours a terrific experience!!My wife and I and our two friends thoroughly enjoyed our walking food tour with Kona Tasting Tours! The variety and quality of food and beverages was exceptional. We particularly appreciated that the venues we visited were locally owned and featured locally-sourced foods. Our tour guide Ellie was enthusiastic and informative and served as a great ambassador for Hawaii and the Kona area. This food tour was a great expetience!!Written 21 January 2024
- BruceA2080 contributionsReturn visitorThis was our 2nd time to take the tour - on our return trip to Kona. Brett and Ellie were fun and informative. The food and drink were tasty, varied and reflective of the local culture. From the chowder to start off to the gelato at the finish, this is a tour worth takingWritten 3 December 2023
- Mary D0 contributionsYummy walking tour, with Hawaiin history highlights!Delicious and fun tour! Loved that Kai and Ellie shared Hawaiin history and culture along the way. Food and drink were very good and a nice variety. Each place had small samplings and we were full by the end of the tour. Nice amount of walking. Really nice and knowledgeable tour guides.Written 24 September 2023
- Q1296OQginas0 contributions40th Wedding Anniversary VacationEverything! The two young ladies were very knowledgeable of the history! They were a lot of fun to be with. Kudos to them!Written 7 May 2023
- jsand4670 contributionsTour focuses on alcohol…not food.A better description of the tour would be helpful. This tours main focus was on the alcohol. We don’t drink. If we would have know their main focus was alcohol we would have chosen a different tour. They did serve us mocktails but they were terrible and honestly we couldn’t even drink them they were that bad. This tour was very large. It made it hard to hear the tour guides.Written 29 March 2023
- dzellar920 contributionsBest tasting tour everWe have done many tasting tours in the past, and this is by far the best ever. Kai and Kris were great, the food and spirits were amazing and thr portions were just perfect. I highly recommend taking the time to explore the eats of Kona on this tasting tour. 100% awesome!!Written 23 March 2023
- P2655UUjudyh0 contributionsBuyer bewareOur cruise ship cancelled this port the morning of the tour due to bad weather. Both the operator and Viator refused to give a refund even though we notified them immediately when the announcement was made. We did not meet the cancelation window. All excursions booked through the cruise were refunded. We were not. That is the drawback of Viator vs cruise ship excursions.Written 10 March 2023
- febat0 contributionsFood tour fun!We were able to take the tour after contacting the company to see if they could squeeze us in as they seemed to have no vacancy left on the days we were on the Island. They graciously accommodated us and the tour lived up to expectations. Informative, delicious and fun! We discovered a number of new restaurants to try and the hosts Kyra, Kamakea and Kris ensured smooth transitions from each restaurant to the next. A must-do!Written 3 March 2023
- Jessica W0 contributionsGreat Thing to Do Your First Day in Kona! We've done food walking tours in multiple countries and cities, and love to taste the local food and learn about the culture. Kona is relatively small, though, and since we did this tour on our second full day on the big island, we actually had already hit two of the spots on the walking tour! Tour guides were great, but I was surprised we didn't have any Kalua Pork or Bowls (we did have ahi poke, though!)Written 20 December 2022

Kai and Ellie were so friendly and gave us a great experience on our walking (and eating) tour through downtown Kona. They shared insights about the history of the city and island and we stopped at some great restaurants along the way. It was everything we hoped it would be, and it even had plenty of food for someone like me who (unfortunately) has a shellfish allergy. Highly recommend!

Our guide (sorry she had a very long name and auto correct won’t let me enter her name) was knowledgeable and super friendly. We got to sample several places that we had seen from walking around, but this saves the trial and error process.
In addition to the food being served she gave a lot of background on the restaurant and food which made the food even more enjoyable
The walking around part was informative as our guide gave some local history
Overall I recommend the tour highly

I wasn't sure what to expect from this but we loved it. Ellie focused on local specialties, and we had some great chowder, pizza and fish/chips. The local drink inventions were really good. Plus she added a ton of history, both native and colonial. I really loved the pictures that she used to illustrate things like loading cattle on boats. We had a lot of fun and went back to 2 of the restaurants for dinner. Thank you!

We booked the tour of 4 for the last day of September. It was hot that day and we met our guide under a tree. The guide then took us to an area standing in the sun light to start his initial history stories. While he was still rambling on, we told him that we did not want to coninue the tour due to the heat and long walk. Then he said that would be great and told the rest of group they will have more fun without us since the 4 of us do not drink alcohol. We realized that we were giving up a lot of money by not continuing with the tour due to the heat but the guide seemed very happy we were leaving. He was very unprofessional and rude.

Elle was the best! We met at the pier where we heard the overview of our 3 hour tour (remember Gilligan's island) the history of the kings and how these islands were brought together is a story I wish we all could use in today's mayhem. Elle told us souch right down to the cows that graze all over those island.
Stopping at major resturantsthat hold so much history and even the out of the way local lunch/ brunch stops gave us all the " wounder what's next feeling. There is so much to see within just a few blocks of the main pier. Thank you Elle. See you at one of the stops soon!

We had such a great time with Ani and Kai. It surpassed expectations as we were able to try so many kinds of foods in so many different environments. All were delicious! Ani did most of the tour and was informative about our surroundings and the food/restaurants. She was fun and personable. Kai added lots of local history tidbits. Great use of our time.

The choices of restaurants and gelato shop were interesting. The restaurant that offered poke was closed that day so a restaurant that served Hawaiian pizza was good. The warm spam and rice snack was a bonus. The personable guide knew a lot of the history and culture of the area. This was a very good food tour and I would recommend it to others.

Our guide,Kai, was very friendly and informative about the area and places we ate at. I was pleasantly surprised by the deep fried avocado at Papa Kona as I don't even like avocado. I would definitely recommend going on the tour if you want to experience a fun historic foodie lunch.

They had seven stops and you would think that you will be stuffed by the end but that is not the case. The second stop was in a store where you get a little pice of chocolate and part of a cookie, that is after you just had a soup. This stop does not go with the sequence of the food and it also was not a restaurant but rather a store trying to sell you products. One stop was just a MaiTai no food, other one was an appetizers. If you put all the food together you do not get even half a meal. Even the ice cream in the end was a little tiny cup, not even a regular cup. The guide was nice and very informative.

What a fabulous experience we enjoyed! Ani and Kai led our small group to many local spots of historical interest. Interspersed with those stops were visits to local restaurants and establishments that offered a deeper understanding of Hawaiian culture through the food and drink we thoroughly enjoyed and savored. Each stop was unique and delicious. Ani and Kai were incredibly engaging and so knowledgeable about Hawaiian history. They shared both their own experiences and stories as we eagerly anticipated each culinary adventure. This is a not-to-miss experience in Kona. The walking is at a very relaxed pace, Ani and Kai were superb in every way and I wish I could award 10 stars to the overall experience.

We are planning on being in Kona September 26, 2020 on the Celebrity Solstice. This food tour sounds like something we would enjoy. Wondering if the length would allow time to return to ship for 6:00pm departure
