- 1Actun Tunichil Muknal “Cave of the Stone Sepulchre” was first discovered in 1989. Located in the Tapir Mountain Reserve of the Cayo District near the village of Roaring Creek, this popular cave is rated as the #1 cave in Central America by National Geographic and listed as one of the top things to do in Belize. The ATM Cave is known to have been used by the Mayas for ceremonial purposes during the Classic Period. Most of the ceremonies and/or rituals were carried out at the entrance of the cave. The interior of the cave was considered to be more sacred for its proximity to the Mayan rain God, Chaak. Towards the end of the Classic Period, it is believed that the rituals moved deeper into the cave as a result of drought, thus believed to contribute to the collapse of the Mayan Civilization. The natural geological wonder of crystalline stalactites and stalagmites formations are not the only remarkable thing about the ATM. This 5-kilometer-long museum is filled with ancient Mayan artefacts and holds over 14 human skeletal remains of men, women and children.

- 896kentr0 contributionsTukan shuttles in BelizeWe used Tukan shuttles to take us from the ferry in Belize city to our hotel in San Ignacio and used them to take us from our hotel in San Ignacio to tour the ruins at Tikal. They also took us back to the airport. They were on time, reliable and friendly. Our driver to and from the border, Rudy, was very knowable. He filled us in on much we did not pick up in Tikal. I highly recommend them as someone to use in Belize. We very much appreciate their service.Written 4 December 2024
- Lili A0 contributionsBelizean JungleHad such an amazing time zip-lining and cave tubing in Belize! Flying high above the Belizean jungle was amazing. It was an unforgettable experience with breathtaking views and endless thrills. The service was beyond incredible—everyone was so friendly, professional, and made sure we felt safe and comfortable throughout the adventure. I definitely recommend this for all you adventure lovers!Written 1 December 2024
- Lee G0 contributionsBarton CreekThe scenery around the creek was beautiful and the cave was dark, interesting and even had human remains from ancient Mayan sacrifices. There were lots of bats but they kept their distance. Rudy gave an amazing tour. He had an advanced knowledge of Mayan history, culture, and traditions. He even told the story of the Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation story of the two twins. He was great. Try to get Rudy as your guide, if possible.Written 11 November 2024
- 944madisonp0 contributionsEpic Experience in a Beautiful PlaceMy brothers and I had an awesome experience! Our guide Dora went above and beyond. We had an amazing time floating down the river in the canoes and Dora was fantastic with showing us interesting formations important to the Maya and also giving us the history behind the cave and how it was used by the Mayans for their practices and rituals. The cave and lagoon itself was breathtakingly beautiful; the water a beautiful turquoise and the cave so awe-inspiring. I loved when we turned off our lights and went quiet for a couple minutes…I have never experienced such darkness before. It was super rad. And it was so quiet except for the drips of water and the occasional squeak of the bats. Truly a one of a kind experience. I would totally go again!Written 8 August 2024
- johnfS3759KU0 contributionsDisappointed with Caracol tour. This Mayan site sounded really interesting when we researched it. The Caracol Mayans had a really good history. However, we were a little disappointed. The drive to the site from San Ignacio was not pleasant. The Belizean government is constructing a new road to the site and caused our driver to drive over unfinished limestone, which was very rough. I'm sure once the road is finished, it will be a nice ride. At the site, the ruins were OK, but only about 15% of the site is visible. The only thing that make the tour good was our guide, Rudy. He was very nice and knowledgeable about the Mayan history. Probably would not recommend the tour to Caracol.Written 16 May 2024
- nancec20180 contributionsWonderful day at the ruinsRudy was a phenomenal guide— So knowledgeable, helpful, encouraging, and entertaining. We had a very memorable experience with Rudy at the caracol ruins today. It was worth every penny! Lunch was provided (a delicious traditional belizean chicken, beans, and rice) It was a really great day.Written 28 April 2024
- Chessi H0 contributionsMagnificent Mayan adventureWe were picked up by a friendly and professional crew that helped our small group cross the border (4 Travellers, us two and one other pair travelling). From here we were introduced to our Guatemalan driver (Rudi) and guide (Luís). We stopped for some free coffee, a spot of shopping and some interesting facts about the local area, fauna and a 3D map of Tikal where our guides also picked up our tickets to facilitate our speedy entry into the park. We saw lots of local wildlife including toucans, spider monkeys, wild turkeys, parrots, agouti, tarantula, caoti and various other birds. The tour encompassed many of the temples within Tikal and several climbs to beautiful views, these were interspersed with interesting facts and local or Mayan opinion from our guide. Lunch was a little late at 3:00-3:30. Which wasn’t actually a problem for the day but we had booked a dinner in the evening which we were too full to properly enjoy. I may have booked a later dinner had I known we were likely to be eating late in advance. That said, the food at restaurante Gonzalez was very good and we thoroughly enjoyed it.Written 22 April 2024
- Explorer8220390 contributionsA must see!Barton Creek was a great experience! Highly recommended! We had a guide drive us (totally needed) over very bumpy roads and through the creek. The land around the cave entrance is manicured, and there are signs indicating certain plants and trees. There is a very comfortable bathroom close by. The entrance to the cave is picturesque! The water was perfectly still. It was 73 degrees in the cave... not cold. The guide paddled us through the cave and expertly explained what we were seeing. There was a human skull and ancient pottery. We also saw blind catfish, not to mention the beautiful stalagmites! Some parts of the cave had a ceiling that appeared to be 40 feet tall. In other parts we had to duck. If you can walk short distances and get in and out of a canoe, you can do this excursion. So glad we did it!Written 2 April 2024
- Gina G0 contributionsI wasn't expecting such beautiful terrain with pine trees and rushing water coming down stream. Very peaceful & natural park resA surprise visit to these mountains ⛰️. I originally did not have this visit planned. It had beautiful and breathtaking views.Written 3 March 2024
- LindenHills0 contributionsAmazing Cave tour!We arrived late in the day after a somewhat adventurous drive to Barton Creek that included two river crossings-shallow water but still a little unnerving. We didn’t realize that the only cave guides on site were available from Mikes Adventure tours. They kindly gave us a guide - Alex has been doing these tours at Mikes for 11 years. We paid 75USD pp and had a wonderful hourlong tour of the Cave. it is spectacular and the history is tied to Mayan cultures. Some of the rituals and sacrifices are a bit grisly but it’s an amazing piece of history. And the cave itself is a natural wonder.Written 24 February 2024

Additionally, he brought authentic food for our lunch which was delicious. After seeing the ruins, we spent some time at the Rio pools. This was a great experience. I highly recommend it if you're ever around here. Our guide, Philip, is a very knowledgeable man. He gave us detailed info about the cave formation and the Maya sacrifices. On top of that he's a funny guy too who made jokes and entertained us but at the same time he seriously knows a lot about the history and culture of his country. I'm glad we had him as our guide. He'll kindly send you pics, as it's not allowed to get in with cameras. He even sent me a complimentary documentary which he took part in it too. Worth every penny.

Our guide Oscar was perfect. He gave us information about every detail. Took his time and made us feel very comfortable.
The way to the cave and the entrance was really cool. Going over rivers. The cave itself was behind amazing. You just have to do it.

The road to the trail head is riddled with lot holes so it’s a bumpy ride. once you arrive, there are washrooms - USE THEM! It’s about 3.5 hrs before you will get access again. You can carry your water bottle for the 2km hike crossing 2 rivers to get to the cave entrance. Once there, you’ll leave everything behind because you will need both hands. Then the adventure begins - you will enter into the cold river and swim inside cave. Your guide will lead you along and you will follow the water, sometimes swimming, sometimes climbing over rocks, sometimes squeezing between them. Good shoes are a must - we wore water shoes with decent tread and they worked great. Wear socks! At one point you have to climb without shoes on and it would hurt to be barefoot. Some parts are steep but the guide tells you exactly where to place your hands and feet. Only 2 spots where you need to squeeze and it’s a bit scary but it’s only about a foot. I wore tight yoga pants and feel like I was the best equipped - they protected my legs when you had to sit or slide, and they didn’t cause any drag. Some agility was required; individuals with knee or back problems would probably have a difficult time of it. It was an amazing experience and a MUST DO excursion when in Belize!
