Keep your camera ready throughout the cruise, as you will likely spot fur seals, seabirds, and native dolphins on the scenic trip to Motuara Island. Here and throughout the tour, the onboard marine biologists share facts and background on the wildlife you encounter. At Motuara Island, stretch your legs on a guided nature hike and seek out some of the island’s blue penguins, saddlebacks, bellbirds, robins, native pigeons, and kakariki, or yellow-crowned parakeets. This is a great chance to see rare New Zealand species, as the birds of Motuara Island are able to nest and breed without interference from invasive predators. Best trip around Malborough Sounds
Had the best trip. Will, the guide and Andy the pilot were so good, providing explanations about the fur seal, birds including a really rare one that Will hadn't seen on previous trips and then dolphins, just to top off the trip. Highly recommend to all

An unforgettable experience - not to be missed.
Wonderful experience! Highly recommend E-Ko tour guide Will for his depth of knowledge and passion for the local wildlife and skipper Andy for spotting so many of them. We saw many varieties of birds in the water, on the wing and on the bird sanctuary, including 30 rare king shags on a rock! Also a beautiful fur seal sunbathing and several rare Hectors dolphins swam right up to our boat. The tour company is very committed to ecotourism and followed all the guidelines for visiting Motorua bird sanctuary (unlike another group we observed who brought bags and food onto the island). An unforgettable experience - not to be missed.

Orange-fronted parakeets on Blumine Island, Marlborough Sound
We had a very enjoyable day with Will (who is from the UK and has a great sense of humour!) and Dan, starting with a briefing on the shore and then we set out into Marlborough Sound. We were the only two people dropped on Blumine Island - by means of a ladder dropped over the front of the boat!!! We wanted to see the rare orange-fronted parakeet - and were successful using Will's hint on where it was most likely to be found. We were (hooray!) picked up after five hours on the island, and then we joined the afternoon passengers on a visit to Motuara Island. We were given a hot drink on the way back to Picton, and then a bonus glass of wine. There were plenty of other sightings on the trip including dolphins and the very rare king shag, only found in Marlborough Sound. Such a good way to spend a day.

Incredible tour in the Queen Charlotte Sounds with lots of wild animals
The guides Will and Dan were amazing, they explained a lot and made the tour very fun. We got to see the Hector's and bottlenose dolphins and several different birds. I can really recommend this tour.

Fabulous experience. The team, Will and Andy, were entertaining, professional and knowledgable. Their enthusiasm for their job and ensuring we all had a great experience were clearly evident. We saw so much wildlife, fur seals, king cormorants, Harvey dolphins, dusky dolphins, terns and much more. Great fun! Thanks so much!

      Couldn't recommend more!!!
It was a surprise bday gift - and an incredible one! We were originally sscheduled to cruise in the afternoon but bc it want sure to depart they reached out and we did the morning one instead. 1st of all, the Marlborough sound is absolutely stunning, and we had very calm water : it allowed us to see 2 of the endemic dolphins species present there : the dusky dolphins (they jumped out of the water for us!) and almost 10 Hector's dolphins they came very close, even swan under the boat! Those were fantastic encounters, + we got to see seals, blue penguins and a lot of very cool birds ! Very small boat with very few ppl, which made it all the more enjoyable. Overall fantastic experience, and shout out to Hanna and captain who shared all of their knowledge with us and we're very helpful.

Incredible 4 hours of joy. We seen dolphins, seals, geckos, and many birds. Walk on the protected island was great, listening to bird song, spotting creatures and amazing views from top. Guide Nikki was lovely- enthusiastic, fun and informative. Captain Dan was very skilled. 100% would recommend this tour to anyone.

      An Awesome Adventure!
An awesome adventure! Courtney and Daniel made everyone feel so very welcome and valued and they shared their expertise and knowledge about this beautiful area and its wonderful wildlife throughout the trip, ensuring we all learned a lot! We saw everything from fabulous seabirds to dolphins swimming alongside the boat, to nesting penguins to seals and then a fabulous array of birds which inhabit the perfect little island that is Motuara. All in all, a totally wonderful experience!

Amazing trip with a company that cares
Such an amazing trip out with Captain Paul and Dolphin song expert Courtney. They made everything fun and relaxed, and even though this was the first time I had done anything like this I felt at ease following their clear instructions. Seeing the dolphins swim right under you as you bob about in the water attempting to sing the dolphins (and Courtney's) favorite songs underwater is something you don't forget. Great value for money, and really appreciate how passionate and respectful the team are about the wildlife they allow you to have these personal encounters with. I'm off to buy a snorkel... (Ps. Paul, give Courtney her $100 bonus. You're both cool, but she's about $100 cooler. Cheers)

We did a morning cruise as we had an afternoon ferry to catch. These guys were the only company which returned in plenty of time to check in before it closed (1pm for the 2pm sailing). Most other companies did not return until 1pm. These guys were really good with our young children who were with us too. My youngest decided to have multiple meltdowns during the trip and the guides didn't even bat an eye. Highly recommend this cruise if you are wanting to get in to the sounds on the same day as a ferry crossing. We didn't get to see all the wildlife we would have liked too however that is just nature - the trip was still amazing.

I did a last minute booking because I was keeping an eye on the weather. So glad I decided to book this trip-even though overcast and slight drizzle, the water was flat calm and great for spotting the wildlife. Motuara Island is pretty special and the viewings we had of the birds, seals and Hector dolphins were fantastic. Skipper Chris and crew Courtney were professional, friendly and very knowledgeable and I thoroughly enjoyed my outing with E-Ko Tours. I have done alot of boat trips over the years, highly recommend this one. Thank you very much.

Wonderful trip to Motuara Island. The guide, Nikki, was enthusiastic and knowledgable and clearly loved the wildlife and sharing information with people. We were very lucky to be on a trip where there were kiwis on board that were going to be released on the island. Chris was a relaxed pilot and there was a very friendly atmosphere. We got to see seals at the salmon nets with some large salmon that they were eating and tossing around - think they might have broken in!! The walk to the top at Motuara Island was great and some of the party stayed at the bottom with the birdlife at the bird bath there. It was disappointing not to see dolphin, but the nine of us that did this as a group of friends would all thoroughly recommend this trip to others.

We had a great trip with knowledgeable guides. There will always be an element of luck, but I believe our guides really knew how to read the environment and find different species.

We had found a first pod of dusky dolphins in about 20 mins, king shags, gannets, other sea birds, and another pod all followed. On the island our guide knew exactly where to look for Grey robins and saddlebacks.

Coming home we were absolutely surrounded by both dusky and a few common dolphins, hunting, playing, and generally showing off. Amazing!

My 7 year old loved it and the guides were understanding of his needs as a younger visitor.

We booked a full day trip to two islands. The day before the tour we were told that they were waiting for additional people to book before they could confirm the second island was available. Apparently, their profit would take a hit if they only took three people.
The morning of the tour we were told that they were still waiting for additional people for the afternoon. They then took us to the first island. When they dropped us off, Nikki said there was still a chance that more people might book for the second island. This didn't happen. So instead of a full day, two island tour, we got a half day, one island tour. We paid $660 NZD for the full day trip, they only gave a $63 NZD refund for cutting our tour in half. Only 9.5%. When I complained, they quoted their terms and conditions at me, but didn't provide any increase in the amount. I get better service from my cable company! I'll never book a tour with E-Ko again.

Be aware that if you book the tour to Blumine island, there won't be a guide with you. You are dropped off on the beach by yourself, and told the boat will be back to pick you up at 11:15.

I rated them a two instead of a one, because the boat cruise portion of the tour was OK.

Lovely half day out on the boat yesterday. Really impressed with the staff and their expert guiding. Well worth doing, the wildlife and bird sanctuary rewarding - saw and heard birds I have never before on the island. The sea went glassy on our way back and the final highlight a lovely hectors dolphin playing and connecting with us around the boat. Fabulous trip highly recommend.

Having traveled to Picton, paid for parking, and sat down to lunch we received an email, half an hour before before departure, that the trip was canceled. When we spoke with Eco Tours’ representative in Picton, she emphasized that the terms of the trip were always subject to cancellation if they didn’t have enough people booked. She offered no compensation for our trouble other than a trip the following day—we had dedicated this day to the trip, and were booked up until we left NZ, so that wasn’t of any use. In addition, the attitude of the rep was uncaring, and not only defensive, but combative.

If you’re willing to take a gamble, go for it. I have visited the island—it is a wonderful destination.

Threatening staff with a 1-star revenue is combative, then requesting a FREE Tour or a BAD review would be given is extortion. As per the T+C, your responsibility was to check in up to 24 hours before to check the Tour is confirmed. Being rude and obnoxious to staff is not acceptable in any circumstance.

Hannah and Captain Paul worked really well together. Incredibly welcoming, friendly and super informative. We had awesome little cards, given binoculars and a map which really felt interactice and helped me understand what we were looking for and keep up when they spoke about what we saw on the cards. They made so much effort to ensure we got to see our birds, seals and dolphins and were very encouraging to have us look for ourselves and point out what we have found. Safety safety safety was essential and well explained to us. But also, fun fun fun. Captain Paul encouraged us to wave to the Dusky dolphins to encourage them to interact with us. The walk was lovely and Hannah stopped at leaves and birds and at a view of another island to give us information and history. But, other passengers also had the choice to stay at the burden bath and continue their bird watching or go at their own pace which i found to be a nice option - even here safety was emphasised - passengers were cointed so nobody got left behind and Hannah made sure she was last on the island. We had some hot drinks, wine and biscuits on the way back in theast stretch of our journey. There was one child on board and they were sure to keep him involved. They were super understanding that it might be overwhelming for him to be on a boat, etc., offered him colouring in and a soft toy (in a shape of a dolphin). We also love that a portion of ticket sales goes back to conserving the animals we get to see. We really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks, team.

I can't imagine anyone regretting booking this trip. My kids (5,7 and 11yrs) kept saying "Best day ever". We were treated to dolphins and seals up close, plenty of photo opportunities. Friendly informative staff who engaged the kids. The trip to the island to see the birdlife offered some spectacular views. The promise of no sea sickness proved true, I had no issues and I generally dislike boats. They were very kind to ensure we were back on time (5.30pm) to catch the bluebridge ferry (due at 6pm for 7pm crossing)

Paul went out of his way to make sure our tour went ahead even without the minimum number. Ferry cancellations meant some couldn't turn up but he honoured the commitment and we had a wonderful time. Even on a drizzly day the Dusky Dolphins came out to play. We saw many varieties of birds and the Sounds are beautiful no matter the weather.
