    What to Expect
Book a morning or afternoon tour and meet your historian guide and group of six or fewer on Andrassy Avenue in central Budapest.

Set off along this grand avenue, where many Jewish people settled in the early 1800s. Then, turn into the side streets of the 7th District, the former Jewish Quarter, a neighborhood that roughly traces the boundaries of the WWII Jewish Ghetto.

Pass silverware shops, prayer houses, and kosher restaurants as your guide tells of the area’s history and vibrant, present-day Orthodox community.

As you explore, stop to see several synagogues. Visit the Kazinczy Street Synagogue and Dohány Street Synagogue, also called the Great Synagogue and a cornerstone of the district. Admire its brick-built towers topped with onion-shaped domes and beautiful, 3000-seater interior.

See a ritual mikveh bathhouse, call at kosher food shops to sample Jewish cuisine, and along the way, uncover the area’s dark WWII history. View remnants of the ghetto wall and Yellow-Star houses—where Jewish people were forcibly confined—and learn about the deportations that took place here in 1944.

Your tour finishes in central Budapest.

This walking tour was an excellent way to get to know an area of Budapest in detail, in three hours. Our docent (guide) Greta was truly brilliant: friendly, articulate, funny, and highly knowledgeable about the history, culture, and architecture of the area. Also gave very...More

Really great guided tour of the Jewish neighborhood and formal ghetto of Budapest. The tours can be done in groups, but we prefer doing them as private tours. The tour guides are all local historians, often PhDs who are knowledgeable in the field. Our guide,...More

I think it is best to take a cab. Just be sure to ask the fare before you get in the car. If you would like to walk use Google maps. I found the busses and trams took some time to learn so if you are not staying in Budapest... More
