The idea of a single card allowing the free pass to attractions is nice but in the case of this particular card it appeared to be less practical. If you are staying for a week or more it is better to buy a 7-day ticket for all the city transport which costs 4950 HF . As for discounts - the similar discounts to many places can be obtained by simply buying the tickets online. And in reality you won't be able to visit more than 5 museums in three days if you want not just run through the halls but appreciate art and admire the views.

Two cards cost £120ish, which given the discounts in the brochure on collection is not bad. The free transport is always useful however, 9/10 times, no-one will ever ask to see you card on a tram/bus, only occasionally on a train. The issue lies with the short lifespan of the card; yes is gives you a lot of discounts on museums, shops, restaurants etc, with the longest card (for the cost listed above) being 5 days (120hrs), you see/use only a fraction. The card should either be longer i.e. 2 week / 1 month or considerably cheaper. I’d say that we haven’t saved the amount that we have spent on the cards, unless you take into account the transport all over the city, although never checked. If visiting again...i never will due to the rudeness of the people in general, i probably wouldn’t purchase another.

We used this card for all our transport around the city, although most things within walking distance after 8-10 hours on your feet the transport is a welcome treat. The two walking tours alone were worth getting the card for as you get to see the highlights of the city with the knowledge of your guide.

Arrived at Budapest airport Sunday 9 Feb (1pm). Saw the card and read “Danube cruise included”, but didn’t see this was only on the 72h pass until we were on the bus to the city.
The pass allows you to get to 200E, which only goes part way to the centre (doesn’t allow free use of the 100E which goes right into the centre) so you have to change onto the Metro at the 200E terminus BUT this is closed, so there’s a replacement bus service. With the change it’s almost an hour to the centre, so we were downtown with luggage about 230pm. It was a other 15 mins to our hotel. So by the time we were ready to start using the card, it was almost 3pm. Most attractions close at 4pm this time of year, so figured we’d start tomorrow but the Palvolgyi Cave is closed Mondays! This means the only really interesting free attractions we could take in are the Buda Tower and the St Lukács Baths, however we’d already booked another of the baths for a later date, so we’ve basically paid 6500HGF (22€) for a 24h Transport ticket and the tower (which costs 1500HGF / 4.50€) and maybe a museum.
Would not recommend this card for 24h unless you’ve planned your day meticulously!

I bought the 72hour card for the ease of public transport and the discounts on the attractions. The transport was pretty much covered by the hop on hop off bus but it transpires that the discounts advertised were not for the 72 hour card, you had to have 72 hour +. This was not clear from the advertising, therefore, we couldn't use the card as we'd planned, it was used only once on the small castle shuttle which would have been a lot cheaper to pay as you go.

We were in Budapest for a week and purchased the 120 hour card. It was a waste of money. As our apartment was centrally located we walked almost everywhere and used public transportation only twice. We did walking tours every day, most of them with “Free Budapest Walking Tours”, which were excellent. The only tour which disappointed was the Buda Castle area tour provided free of charge with the Budapest Card. The entrance fees for museums are not expensive. The card is superfluous, other than as a contribution to the Hungarian economy.

A little disapointed on this card and will not recommend to anyone. Reasons are:
1) Most places are not covered (but they do offer discount)
2) Public transport is cheap and this is a "walking city)
3) If you intended to visit all 21 museum on offer, you will be rushing around town like a headless chicken
I wish I have read other reviews in advance, money not well spent......

I purchased the 72 hour plus card for several reasons and it turns out the card was virtually useless. I wanted to do the free wine four-what they DON’T tell you is it only available one day a month; I wanted to do a Danube Cruise preferably at night-what they DON’T tell you is you can only do daytime cruises; I wanted to use it for a funicular ticket-what they DON’T tell you is you must get a ticket from one TI center located far away from Budapest and you can’t get it beforehand so you use part of your time tracking down a ticket; and I wanted to use the Minibud service from the airport-what they don’t tell you is you will wait over an hour for a shuttle-20 mins was spent standing outside the locked shuttle waiting for the driver. The Budapest Card is a waste of money and they very aggressively market it at kiosks around the city. Don’t waste your money-buy transport tickets and the few discounts they offer will never equal the price.

Purchased a 72 hour card by and official Budapest Card stall in Budapest. Was misinformed of the benefits as the vendor led us to believe we were buying a plus card instead of a regular card. Was very disappointed by the small number of attractions offered by the card as it does not cover the majority of museums etc. Would NOT recommend. Terrible waste of money.

Had my six day travel card delivered to my hotel (K & K Opera). Picked it up at the Front Desk upon check-in. Showing the card, I received discounts at several venues. I also had free pizza, coffee, and pastry. Didn't have to fret over currency and paying the proper fare. I recommend every tourist purchase this card. It is also a durable keepsake.

How can we travel from the airport to the hotel if the card is being delivered to the hotel (ie we won't have it to show to the driver).
Rajivsharma1234
Faridabad, India95 contributions
I don't think you will be able to have any use of the card untill you have it physically with you, because for the first time use you will have to write the date and time on the card before presenting it to wherever you are using the card for the first time. The card will be valid for exact 24/48/72 hours from the first time use. If you have the card delivered to the hotel, then you will have to arrange your airport transfer yourself. If your card would have been picked up from the airport (or IBIS Hotel near the airport which is a pick up point I know for sure), then you could have used any public transport to get to your hotel.
Hope this helps.

Can you just turn up and buy this card at the Airport from the information desk or do you need to pre order and have it delivered there? I understand the card can be delivered to the hotel for free.... but I would like to use it to get to the hotel!! So would need to get at the airport. Thanks

You can buy the card at the airport itself and there are many tourist centers all over the city for walk-in. The airport kiosk, however, shuts at around 10 pm.
Also, there is an airport shuttle service for going to the city (any drop) and back which is quite timely and good. You have to give the schedule for return at the time of booking, but you can always change the pickup location or time by calling them. There are discounted packages depending on the number of people and a two-way trip. One thing - they are very punctual, so don't be late for your pickup.
I took the airport shuttle and bought my 72-hour card from a center near my apartment. You will see them almost everywhere. You can check with your hotel as well.

Can we have the card mailed to us in the United States to leaving on our vacation so that we have it when we land at the Airport in Budapest and use it for our transfer to the Hotel?
Tony W
Sudbury, UK265 contributions
I do not think that you can. However, it's as easy as going to the Information desk at the airport arrivals and buying it. Not sure what you mean by transfer to hotel but if you want to use public transport then you get it free with the Card. All you do is immediately you want to use it, fill in the date and time on the back and your time starts running from then.
