Visit: Bled Castle (Blejski Grad), Lake Bled, Bled 4260 Slovenia
Enter the castle and enjoy the bird's-eye views on the shimmering lake and the Julian Alps from the perched courtyard. Fresh air and the warm sun combined with Bled's history, exhibited in the castle museum, will make you wonder about the medieval life at majestic Bled Castle. When strolling through the mysterious Castle premises, do not forget to visit the wine cellar, Gutenberg's press chamber, the castle's chapel and the museum.
Built as a stronghold for the aristocratic bishops of the Brixen dynasty to defend their territories from attack, its fortified Romanesque walls and ramparts today hide a largely 16th‐century Renaissance castle built after a devastating earthquake in 1511 destroyed the previous building. It is centered around a pair of courtyards, constructed in an enticing jumble of red‐roofed wine cellars, forges, servants’ quarters, mansion, a stately knight’s hall and a chapel swathed in frescoes.
