About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- MMicci0 contributionsDelightful morning on the waterA very engaging 4 hour trip on the water- beautiful views across Oyster Bay & up river, lots of local & historical snippets, pelicans & ospreys galore (a pair of eagles too) & a welcome cuppa & homemade damper following on from tasters of oysters, strawberries & honey. Our captain, Jack, knows his stuff & is full of mischief & fun!Written 30 January 2025
- Lizwa61720 contributionsUnmissable River Cruise in Albany, WAYou can’t choose the weather here in Albany, but you can certainly choose what to do. I definitely recommend the river cruise on the Kalgan Queen. 4hrs with Capt. Jack and his stories just isn’t enough in my opinion. I believe him when he states there are so many more to share. If you take your sense of humour with you this trip is unforgettable. The stunning scenery around Emu Point, Oyster Harbour and the Kalgan River speaks for itself. The historic stories an added bonus of the lives before us. Mix in a wonderful collection of birdlife and their interactions ticks another box. We were very fortunate to spot a small pod of dolphins. This was not a whale spotting cruise. Not the season and they don’t go into Oyster Harbour. Please be aware of this and appreciate the beauty in a river cruise. Morning tea or coffee is provided whilst the boat is stopped. Mum’s warm damper is something deliciously special. Don’t miss out on an Albany Rock Oyster tasting - the best I’ve ever had. For something sweet local strawberries and honey from the family hives. Whether local or visiting I truly believe you won’t be disappointed. PS Yes there is a toilet on board And don’t forget a jumper or jacket just in case.Written 16 December 2024
- I6223VUcolinm0 contributionsA great River Cruise experience in AlbanyThis is a "must do" when visiting Albany. Captain Jack took us on a 4 hour cruise up the Kalgan River which included a delicious warm Damper and tea or coffee as well as a taste of the local Oysters & Strawberries. With a extremely informative commentary, a bit of humour and even some poetry it was a fantastic experience.Written 5 November 2024
- X1252JLcathyp0 contributionsDEFINITELY NOT RECOMMENDED! WASTE OF MONEY!NOT RECOMMENDED!! Cruise date - 17 October 2024 The cruise was a waste of money & extremely disappointing for the following reasons: 1. Advertised cruise length - The cruise did not leave until 9.30am, not at 9am as advertised. 2. Overcrowded & uncomfortable - People on the sides of the boat were squashed together while those at the front had no back support & were exposed to the cold wind. 3. Vision - Very difficult to see outside the boat through the plastic walls, over the heads of other passengers & because of the gangplank. 4. False advertising - a) no local honey, strawberries or oyster tasting. b) no billy tea. c) no shipwreck. d) the Finke River (NT) is the oldest in the world, not the Kalgan. 5. Afternoon tea - very poor! a) English Breakfast tea bags & Nestle instant coffee served haphazardly with hot water poured all over the table. b) No milk on offer other than full cream. 6. Food handling - a) Captain Jack picked up dead fish then served afternoon tea without washing his hands. b) No sanitiser provided. 7. Glass bottom boat - Nothing to see on the cruise other than seagrass. 8. Points of Interest - Many of the advertised points of interest in the brochure were not mentioned on the cruise. 9. Incorrect Information - Some 'facts' were not correct, quoted at the expense of women, or offensive to get a laugh. Disappointing with kids on the cruise. 10. Jokes - either sexist, racist, misogynist, inappropriate or offensive. SAVE YOUR MONEY!Written 22 October 2024

In addition to the scenery, we had Percy the dancing pelican to entertain us , and we also got to see Ospreys swooping down to feed on fish, and their nests. Outstanding cruise! We cannot recommend this 4 hour cruise highly enough for passengers of ALL ages. It really is unique as Captain Jack has a supporting cast headed by two pelicans he saved and nursed as youngsters named PERCH and PERCY. Percy (who is actually a girl) will dance for her fish. Perch can be seen giving a lucky passenger a hug. Jack is a brilliant guide who is as witty and entertaining as he is knowledgeable about the history, geography and wildlife of this region. You definitely won’t be bored and by the way, there is a loo on board if you are thinking 4 hours might be a bit challenging. Jack’s mum makes a great damper for the guests and the oysters were nice too - all included in the price along with tea or coffee. Various birds of prey join in the entertainment by scooping fish from the water that Captain Jack tosses overboard. It’s a perfectly safe and fun cruise and a must for anyone visiting Albany. Cathy & Ian Yarwood. (PS. A windcheater might be handy on some days)

Perfect trip - we were the couple from Germany. The captain is priceless. During the tour, he entertained his guests for four hours at the highest level without the boredom. Thanks for that. We would recommend anyone who "strands" in Albany - we were here three days , traveling alone by vehicle . We still have two months to go, with us staying in one place for at most three nights. This is our second tour after 2016 , when we were traveling from Sydney, also seven weeks.

We spent this morning on the Kalgan Queen. The weather was cool (20C), with a slight shower and a bit of a wind. In our group two of us were prone to sea sickness. However, even with that wind there was no queasiness. A more smooth and relaxing journey we couldn't ask for. The cruise is sheltered, and I was very impressed by the nimbleness of the boat. The captain is a very nice bloke that tells a great yarn and has had some amazing adventures. He has a great knowledge of the history of Albany, the local wildlife and a genuine showmanship. I'd recommend him as a host. Jack takes you on a journey down a river that has so many stories, and each little snippet was as interesting as the last. We saw cormorants, pelicans, osprey and white bellied sea Eagles. Honestly some breathtaking moments and some beautiful interactions with the wildlife. A damper and tea/coffee is included in the price and you won't be disappointed; delicious and toasty warm this is something to remember. We brought our kids with us (8 and 10). They enjoy nature and going out on the water, and this was no exception. An informed and joyful river journey for anyone of any age to enjoy. I'd encourage all visitors to Albany to book a seat!!

Such an entertaining trip. Loved the interaction between Captain Jack and Perch, his favourite pelican. Watching the eagles as they scooped up fish was brilliant and the stories/jokes kept us amused the whole time. Thank you to his mum for the damper, will have a go when I return home.

I think Cathy was having a bad day, I'm so glad I didn't pay any attention to her 1 star review.
Captain Jack was amazing, obviously loves what he does and delivers a very informative and entertaining day out. We were surrounded by bird life, the pelicans were a real highlight, as were the sea eagles swooping in metres away to pick up a fish. A unique experience delivered by someone who is very knowledgeable and passionate about the area he is showcasing.
We enjoyed fresh strawberries and honey. We had very tasty warm damper washed down with a cup of tea.
It is a real talent to be able to inform, entertain and engage for over 4 hours and Captain Jack did just that, 5 Stars well deserved.

This four-hour trip was a delight from beginning to end. Family owned and run, the Kalgan Queen tour is so accommodating and will even go out with only one or two people! On our tour yesterday we had a full boat with 31 passengers. Close encounters with Pelicans, seeing birds of prey in action while hearing about their habits, habitats and the history of the area made it absolutely fascinating. Our guide, and owner of the Kalgan Queen, Jack, regaled us with his knowledge, stories, witty banter and even poetry. Cups of tea and coffee were provided together with homemade Damper which went down a treat. We even got to taste incredible home made honey and sample lip balm which were also available to purchase. We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone coming to Albany and to locals too! It is definitely one experience not to be missed.

He has a light hearted sense of humor and keeps the audiences involved. It is surprising how quick the time goes while you are on the tour. Jack is extremely entertaining.

This trip was amazing. Jack the captain was a mind of information, with a great sense of humour. The whole trip was insightful and a lot of fun.
Plus the wonderful food (wholesome and flavoursome)
Jack certainly puts his heart and soul into it and his welcoming presence is inviting and heart warming. A man who is passionate about his job and clearly loves to see people have a truly memorable time.
I whole heartedly recommend this to young and old. Thank you Jack 💛

Was a bit dubious and worried that this was wasted money and half a day from our holiday. How wrong could I be!
Great day from start to finish, got some great photos of Ospreys and sea eagles feeding on the bait Jack was throwing in and of Perch the pelican sat on the boat.
Jack is very knowledgeable and gives a great talk on the history regarding the river and surrounding area.
All in all a great day out and well worth the money.
Thanks Jack, some pictures to follow.

Hi! May I know if there are any toilet/restroom facilities aboard the cruise? A 4hr cruise will be considerably long for elderly to go without any toilet breaks.

Yes there is a toilet and hand basin on board, nicely clean.
