Brilliant 4 hours. Scenery & commentary were spectacular. Best damper we have ever tasted & Capt Jack even shared the recipe which was just another way he went above & beyond.

Lovely day out on the river
The trip was fun from the word go . The captain was funny , peppering info with jokes . The view was spectacular. In addition to the scenery, we had Percy the dancing pelican to entertain us , and we also got to see Ospreys swooping down to feed on fish, and their nests. The captain brought homemade damper, honey as well as live oysters for us to try.

Four hours full of informative banter delivered by Captain Jack as he interacted with his fine feathered friends.
Patting Perch the Pelican was practically perfect! Dining on damper was dandy! The freshly shucked oyster- ostensibly splendid!

      Relaxing & Interesting Cruise
A very enjoyable and relaxing cruise on the Kalgan River. You will not be disappointed. Jsck was very informative about the Kalgan River and the wildlife. We booked a week in advance. We picked the perfect day to go in October as it reached 26 degrees in the arvo. Captain Jack was very entertaining with his own poems, talk of his family and telling his story about his beloved Pelican Perch who he hand reared until able to let it go. Perch the Pelican was very photogenic. We were able to see Osprey nests very clearly and Captain fed the Osprey as he flew by. We were lucky enough to taste his Mum's homemade Damper bread and enjoyed fresh honey from his Bee farm. If we had one criticism and it is very minor it would be nice to have an hour to ourselves on the boat without any commentary so we could chat to the people we met from all over the world. Just a tip, remember to bring warm clothing or a warm fleece or jumper because at 9am in Albany it's very chilly out on the water and you will feel it. Best to go prepared and bring some water.

      A morning well spent.
If you are going to Albany this is a must. The four hours plus went in the blink of an eye. Captain Jack was knowledgeable and humorous. Credit must also be given to his poetry. And a special mention to Captain Jack's mother for the savoury damper. We were given so much information and knowledge it is hard to remember it all. And you must see the amazing dancing pelican. A really good morning.

Outstanding cruise! We cannot recommend this 4 hour cruise highly enough for passengers of ALL ages. It really is unique as Captain Jack has a supporting cast headed by two pelicans he saved and nursed as youngsters named PERCH and PERCY. Percy (who is actually a girl) will dance for her fish. Perch can be seen giving a lucky passenger a hug. Jack is a brilliant guide who is as witty and entertaining as he is knowledgeable about the history, geography and wildlife of this region. You definitely won’t be bored and by the way, there is a loo on board if you are thinking 4 hours might be a bit challenging. Jack’s mum makes a great damper for the guests and the oysters were nice too - all included in the price along with tea or coffee. Various birds of prey join in the entertainment by scooping fish from the water that Captain Jack tosses overboard. It’s a perfectly safe and fun cruise and a must for anyone visiting Albany. Cathy & Ian Yarwood. (PS. A windcheater might be handy on some days)

I have never before posted a review but the experience on the Kalgan Queen this morning was amazing.
Captain Jack kept my whole family entertained for the entire 4 hour trip. My family included my 70+ year old parents, myself and my husband and three children aged 13, 11 and 7.
Captain Jack informed us with interesting facts about local birds, Noongar culture, early mapping history, pioneers etc - all while intertwined with his great sense of humor and beautifully recited poetry. He was happy to answer a wide range of questions and was helpful to the passengers.
His passion for this river, the harbor and all the flora and fauna was evident. He delivered up-close encounters with sea eagles, osprey and pelicans and we were all surprised how quickly the four hours had gone when the cruise was complete.
The fresh local mussels, honey and damper were a treat and the morning also included tea or coffee at a secluded and scenic area on the river banks.
If you visit Albany - this cruise is a must and Captain Jack is a passionate advocate and wealth of knowledge that will keep you entertained for the entirety.

Great day out today. Started with a very warm welcome from Captain Jack. Also perfect weather for a cruise. He is very passionate about the animals, the river and the history of Albany and the waterways.
We had 4 hours of interesting information, morning tea of homemade damper and tea/coffee.
There were stories, poetry, history, general information on the area. Dancing pelicans, friendly pelicans, handfeeding osprey on the move.
    Fantastic.
Thankyou Captain Jack & your assistant Fiona.

Captain Jack took us out for a fabulous 4hr cruise on the Kalgan Queen, through Oyster Harbour and up the Kalgan River. He regaled us with local history and knowledge of the bird life in the area, as well as poetry and interesting facts. It was topped off with his mum’s damper, the family’s own honey and local strawberries.
I highly recommend this really enjoyable little cruise if you’re in Albany for a day or two.

The day started off cloudy with a forecast of 100% of fun! As my husband and I walked the boardwalk to the boat we were greeted by the very friendly Captain Jack! A quick wash of the hands with sanitiser and we made our way further along the boardwalk to where were greeted by a few of the feathered locals. One in particular seemed to have the important task of greeting us on board the Kalgan Queen. Beautiful pelican girl Perch looked us up and down gave us the eye and eagerly waited the boarding of her Captain Jack! There was something fishy about our Captain and Perch knew it! A quick feed, a little hug a scratch of the belly for Perch and we were on our way. The rest of the journey did not disappoint. Not only was our Captain funny, a poet and friendly he was full of knowledge. The landscape wasn't just a beautiful landscape the birds were not just birds, the stories and the history of the river and her banks made the trip so much more than just a boat ride. We saw Osprey's and their nests, a boat wreck and waved at the locals. The tea and coffee Captain Jack served up was a welcomed warmth to the stomach and the honey, strawberries and damper were all eaten by the obliging crew members. I loved that Captain Jack and his family are bird life carers! I envy your lifestyle and thank goodness there are people like them that care. Dancing Percy is lucky to have you! Thanks again Captain Jack for your service and entertainment. A tip to anyone wanting to go on board... take a jacket... you really don't want to borrow one of the Captain's. His sense of humour is great, but his choice in fashion sense maybe not so good! ha!

The surprise of tasting fresh caught & cooked muscles on the boat, the Dancing Pelican Percy & the Fantastic Damper from Captain Jacks Mum. You even have a little time to get off the boat while Captain prepares morning tea.
Take jacket, beanie ,water & camera.
Captain Jack is full of personality and the passion for his family, his Kalgan Queen Cruises and the love of the Kalgan River and it's inhabitants is a trip you must do when in Albany. I bought the DVD which is also a pleasant surprise. You will never be bored on this cruise. Thank you Captain Jack.

A guide can make or break an experience. You're in great hands when your guide is experienced, informative, fun Captain Jack. Some months have passed since we sailed on the Kalgan Queen, but we think of our enjoyable day with him frequently. Drifting along the sheltered waters of Oyster Harbour and on the ancient Kalgan River allowed us to see beautiful sea eagles, ospeys, and numerous other birds, including a delightful pelican that dances for her supper. We even saw a Giant Smooth Back Sting Ray and a shipwreck as we learned about the history and the people of the area. We were even treated to yummy Hot Damper Bread and Billy Tea (thanks, Jack's mom!) Then we got to disembark for a while to view several Western Gray Kangaroos in the wild. What a thrill! We had a wonderful time! If you do only one thing in Albany, do this! Great experience for people on cruise ships and for everyone else.

This is a fantastic way of spending a morning in Albany.
Captain Jack is a gifted entertainer and poet who knows the region and its history in depth and delights in sharing it with his passengers. Add the beauty of the Albany harbour waters, the charm of the Kalgan Riiver, the involvement of the local fauna, and a share of the family damper, and a brilliant experience awaits you.

It's impossible to say which part of this cruise was the best part because EVERY SECOND of it was insanely amazing!! Filled with fun facts, amazing bird life and feeding, laughter, exceptional insight, commentary as well as poems written and read by the very talented Captain Jack. The special pelicans who have such an amazing bond with Jack are full of cheeky tricks too! This trip is not just a 'tour' its almost like being part of a family and you can see that first hand...the cruises were began by Jack's father, Jack's adorable daughter Thea was First mate during our trip and proved to be a very efficient helper (😉), the perfectly made savoury damper (made by Jack's mum) was a treat, the stories shared about Jack's dad, the history of Albany, early settlers as well as local folklore, we got to see their lovely family too before heading up the Kalgan river!! So so soooo happy I could go for this! Highly highly recommend this cruise! Worth every cent and sooo much more!!

What a wonderful time!! My husband and I have visited Albany many times. Wanting to experience something new/ different, we decided we’d give the Kalgan Queen a try. We were a bit hesitant, not really knowing what to expect. But we had the best day!! The Kalgan Queen is a family run business, offering a unique experience in a small group setting. Captain Jack is exceptional, offering lots of knowledge, wisdom, insights about the local area and funny tidbits. We took our 5wk old onboard (in a carrier) and it was fine. It’s a really brilliant experience, and we especially enjoyed the homemade damper, the fresh oysters and the local honey tastings. They’re open through June this year and I’d recommend this to everyone; all ages and locals or visitors. Worth every penny! (Book direct with them though, to ensure the small business gets every cent of the fee)
