But Brad, our instructor was very kind and helpful. He made sure we were safe and learning in best possible way. H e explained the basics very clearly which gave us good exposure to surf easily. By the end one of us was able to stand on the surfing board while I was able to get on my knee. The boards were super forgiving and the instruction was so good. I’m so happy with how it went. Wasn’t cold at all even tho it was mid winter. Was so exhilarating to stand-up a good few times during the lesson. How exciting! Really recommend these guys.Written 8 July 2023

I had booked a two hour trial lesson for my partner who wanted to go surfing for the first time. If instructed correctly, a surfing student will be able to stand up on the board and have a lot of fun during the first lesson - I have been to multiple surfing schools in Europe and Australia and have an idea of what distinguishes a bad instructor from a good one. Unfortunately, the experience at Torquay Surf Academy was very disappointing.
The instructor merely gave a very short theoretical introduction to his students which lasted no longer than five minutes. Complete newbies to surfing will definitely require more advice to understand the techniques correctly and the group was not that small either.
In the water, the instructor did not support the students at all. He just stood there and watched them struggling for two hours. Occasionally, he went for a swim instead of providing personal feedback or even just giving a little push so that the students could at least try to stand up even if their paddling technique was not yet perfect. That is what any good teacher would do with students who are on a board for the very first time - no one expects to finish the lesson as a pro, you just want to try out a new activity, get an idea of how it works and have some fun.
This teacher could not care less. He did not even provide the group with proper safety instructions. I watched the class from the shore and was speechless when I saw students bumping into each other and hitting their heads on each other's boards because the instructor apparently did not teach the students about the importance of keeping your distance as a beginner and how to protect your head with your arms. He did not intervene at any point. My partner later told me that when some students approached the instructor during the lesson and asked for support he just told them to try harder and figure it out themselves. I have never seen anything alike.
I would not recommend this school to my worst enemy. Either the school owner has not a clue of his staff's attitude during lessons or he does not care altogether. Either way, this is extremely unprofessional. The two star rating is owed to the fact only that one star ratings might get filtered and not be published altogether. A zero star rating would describe this school's services more adequately.

Hi,
The team here at TSA are extremely disappointed to hear that your partner did not enjoy or find value in the surfing lesson that they participated in. As a business that are constantly striving to improve and ensure 100% customer satisfaction we value your feedback and wish to rectify our mistakes and redeem our self. Torquay Surfing Academy would life to offer your partner an additional small group surfing lesson at no extra cost or alternatively free equipment hire. Look forward to hearing from you so that we can further discuss your feedback and book in a lesson for your partner.
Kind regards,
Jake

I purchased a two hour lesson and all day board hire for my nieces who are 12 and 8 years old. The lesson was their Christmas present from me as the are locals. The large group was split into two which was good. Our instructor barely spoke to the kids and did not give my nieces any help or advice in the water. If I hadn’t been in the water with them they would have had no input at all. I’m from the Bass coast and our lessons over here are run very differently. I was a bit disappointed to tell the truth. I’d just hire boards next time.

Hi Hayley, sorry to hear you had a bummer of a lesson, we had other reviews from that day and all where very positive, so in some ways, it's hard to please all the people all the time. We do our best to help all participants. We thank you for your review and will rectify your concerns so that others only give us positive feedback. Cheers.

I had a great time with my kids at Torquay, thanks to Amish and crew. From the moment we stepped into the shop, along the walk to the beach and during the small group class. Although the beach had some crowd which is only natural in this time of the year, Amish and Torquay Surfing Academy instructors made every single moment count! So much that after some sightseeing through the surf coast the following day we came back to hire surfboards and suits to do it all over again. Will definitely come back again and try the private lessons, which I also noticed people coming for.

We had a great time! Part of a very small group and we were in the water only minutes after getting down to the beach. Instead of long drawn out things on land like I've seen other schools do.
It's definitely a more personal approach, you ask questions and you'll get tips to help you progress. Just like a friend taking you out.

It was ok; maybe more instructors(only 2) needed for a large group (13) as majority were very green and several people needed just a little extra help once we got into the water. Overall the staff were friendly and helpful; but really needed more staff. especially for students who were struggling. Still a very enjoyable time. The equipment was good. The instructions was very easy to understand; theory was solid; but maybe a little more time required for practise.

This is my first experiment with surfing. The lessons were crisp and clear. The time spent on lessons and practising/playing was pretty much sufficient for a beginner.
The only problem is that they did not have smaller surfboards for kids. If you are approaching them for your kids, then better to inform the team before hand
Coaches were with us all the time during our practice and clarifying our doubts. I suggest going on a weekend / public holiday when there is a good crowd.
My overall experience was nothing less than excellent

Had a fantastic time with TSA. Instructor paid close attention and offered expert advice. He was patient with me as we corrected my technique and finally got me surfing. For someone with little experience and skill, this was not an easy task and I'm so grateful for the experience I had here!

The staff was friendly, the instructors were patient, and they gave you everything you needed to succeed! (Wetsuits, surfboards, shoes if you ask for them). It was freezing cold when I did this tour, but none of the other students or instructors seemed to mention it or be bothered by it in the slightest. Maybe I'm just a weenie... With that said, it is worth giving a thought to the weather on the day you book!

My instructor was Kev, an incredibly passionate, knowledgeable and patient instructor who was genuinely interested in getting the best out of you. He made the difference between giving up and getting hooked on surfing. He’s seriously the yoda of surf instructing. Would highly recommend 🙌

Was a really good, fun experience! The instructor, Arthur, made us feel at ease and safe in the water having never done surfing before. Provided us with great advice and assisted us as much as we needed. Would definitely recommend a surf lesson with the Torquay Surfing Academy.
