Mike was a great guide and very informative. He is obviously passionate about our landscape and brings a wealth of information garnered from his diverse experiences. Mike accommodated myself and my wife at short notice and was flexible with our booking arrangements. Thanks Mike

Unlock the secrets in the Earth with this enjoyable, practical and informative tour
One of the most enjoyable and interesting tours I've done. I know the very basics of Geology and Mike's explanations of the theory, the practical and the consequences was so enjoyable and informative. This so much more interesting than a dry text book (or website :-) ) as Mike explains how *those* rocks on the beach - that you are standing beside - got there and why the are shaped that way. And more. The same with the sand-dunes and some of the waterways. I'm planning on booking in on a longer tour on my next visit...and bringing some friends. I'm confident they'll enjoy it as much as I did.

      Fascinating Tour
Mike was an outstanding guide for our Geological Tour of south-west Victoria. He is a highly qualified and experienced geologist with an indomitable passion for the science. His explanations were vivid and took us back to the time when the land was formed by volcanos and rivers of molten lava. The four hours we spent on the tour flew by and we are enthused to find out more ourselves. Excellent value for money and a wonderful addition to our holiday.

We toured Budj Bim with with Mike and he did an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story of the geology of the area alive for us, both as we drove out to the site and also when we were there. He managed to pitch his explanations phenomenally well with them being of interest to my husband (a metallurgist who knows a bit about “rocks”) and me (a medical receptionist who knows only a little about “rocks”). We both got to play “detective” with Mike, sorting out hypotheses for the geological events in the area and it was just FUN! Well worthwhile!

Mike is a brilliant tour guide and we spent a wonderful afternoon learning heaps about different kinds of volcanic activity in the area. I had booked because I have been reading about this for a research project, but Mike really brought the landscape alive for me. I got the impression he is well able to adapt his tours according to the interests of the group; and to adapt his teaching and guiding style, too, according to the levels of interest and previous understanding. He knows heaps, and keeps up with the latest research, but is also a good listener and conversationalist. He is also very sensitive to and respectful of different forms of Indigenous knowledge, though this tour is primarily about geology, and the ways we understand the landscape around us. Everything went extremely smoothly and I thought this was fantastic value. I felt we were very lucky to have Mike to ourselves for the afternoon! Thoroughly recommended.

Thank you kindly. Looking back four years now, we are still going! Geotours will adapt to historical science education. This has it's own methods and field observation is likely the best way to learn. I would love to hear from a teacher who may have a bus load of interested year 10 geography students.

There was little advance information about Mount Eccles but it turned out to be an interesting and very different old volcanic area. There were good facilities and a walking track around the crater lake. Easy to find between Portland and Hamilton..

Not so old! - erupted about 38,000 years ago and the topography is not too different today. Facilities are even better now. Hopefully the cultural center will be open to round out the experience when you return.

A trip to Mount Eccles Volcano in Budj Bim National Park with Mike, a qualified geologist from Geotours based in Port Fairy, Victoria Australia, promises to be an unforgettable and enriching experience. Mike’s deep knowledge of the area, combined with his expertise in geology, will allow you to explore not only the volcanic landscape but also the profound cultural connections that have shaped the land over thousands of years.

Mike will guide you through the fascinating geological features of Mount Eccles, a dormant volcano that is part of the larger Western District volcanic region. He’ll explain the volcanic processes that formed the landscape, from the eruption of lava flows to the creation of craters and the surrounding basalt plains. As you explore the park, Mike will share his insights into how volcanic activity shaped the local environment, creating the rich, fertile soils that sustain both the natural landscape and the region's human populations.

Mike’s extensive knowledge of geological formations goes beyond just Mount Eccles. He’ll explain how this volcano fits into the broader volcanic history of Victoria, including its connections to other significant sites in the area, like the nearby Tower Hill crater, and the role of this volcanic landscape in shaping the climate, water systems, and biodiversity of the region.

Whether you're a geology enthusiast, a cultural history lover, or simply someone who enjoys beautiful landscapes, this tour will leave you with lasting memories of the land's natural beauty and profound cultural significance.

You are right the geology/landscape often controls what people can do with land. The Budj Bim Cultural landscape used for aquaculture, probably over 10,000 years, is a great example. The ponds and stony rises were manipulated. to advantage.

Great tour! Very interesting insights into the landscape from the tour guide Mike. Easy to understand, and very in depth. Informal and easy tour. It was so good to learn about something you see everyday but take for granted.
