About
Education and showcasing the advancements of the cotton industry are central to this tour. Guests will enjoy an authentic farm based experience, led by friendly and knowledgeable locals, designed to connect visitors with the process of making cotton garments. Today, we guide thousands of visitors each year, through the sustainable practices and the day to day workings of our farm 'Alcheringa'. The 2,500 acre property purchased by Keith Coulton in 1973, was formerly a working sheep station. Today, it produces irrigated cotton and rotational crops year round. Native Australian birds and wildlife such as water birds, pelicans, black swans, kangaroos, pigeons and possums can often be seen, acting in their natural habitat. Central to the property is a 1km lateral watering system. Visitors are also intrigued by the supply of water, gravity fed through channels around the farm.

          Enjoyable Experience
It was great to meet Sam and have a chat as part of the tour. Got a different perspective on Cotton farming from the biased reporting that seems to predominate. Would recommend to everyone.

Great cotton learning experience in Goondiwindi.
Great tour. From pick up at our Caravan Park to return to Park was wonderful. Very informative run down of growing and harvesting cotton. Followed by small tour of town and even morning tea at the Museum, which was extremely well presented showing the good old days. Then to top it all off, a visit to the cotton clothing shop, beautifully made clothes. Highly recommend this tour, ps. Lois our guide was wonderful.

My wife and I found the tour enjoyable and informative. It was an eye opener to see a cotton farm. Mike was a great guide and it was a great tour. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in the Australian Agricultural Industry and the contribution the cotton industry makes to our economic prosperity.

          Goondiwindi Cotton Farming
Met by personable guide with local knowledge for a brief introduction to "Gundy" before bussing out to family owned "Alcheringa" established in 1977. viewing of the expansive cotton fields and water storage with a comprehensive explanation of the cotton farming business from preparation, through sowing, maintenance and different forms of irrigation, to harvesting and processing prior to shipment to foreign facilities. Very informative with a cotton growers perspective - a great experience. Despite the many armchair critics of the business, I wonder who would want to be a farmer faced with the many difficulties, variables, and vicissitudes of the business. Thank you to the farmers every day And thanks to Mike for opening our eyes

          Very informative
The tour was very laid back and casual but in saying that, we knew exactly what to expect as our guide, Lois was great. She was a fountain of knowledge about what we saw and kept the pace of the tour appropriate for all of us onboard. Morning tea was customised for each of us with a beverage of our own selection and the damper was light and fluffy. Highly recommend doing the tour if in the area.

The tour through the cotton farms was very informative, and gave an excellent overview of the industry. It was easy to listen to - and understand - the guide, and he was also able to answer the questions of a more experienced person on the tour. Great work!
The museum was small, but interesting, and the damper at morning tea was the best we have ever had. Thank you.

We were so glad that Goondiwindi Cotton had started up the their Farm and Town tours again a week before our arrival in early March 2022. It was a fantastic morning and we would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the town.

Louis picked us up from the showgrounds in a mini bus and we made our way out to Alcheringa just the other side of the border. Lots of local knowledge about the area accompanied the short trip.

Alcheringa is huge! An amazing site to see! The massive dam had plenty of water in it after good, recent rainfall.

We enjoyed learning how cotton is grown and processed, the technology involved in planting, irrigating and harvesting it makes you come away with a new appreciation for the (cotton) clothes on our back. Cotton growing has come along way since it began in Qld.

The bus then took us back into town past many of Goondiwindi's well known landmarks and stopped at Customs House for a lovely morning tea and look around. Great place to learn about Gundy's history that is run by friendly volunteers.

Last stop is the Goondiwindi Cotton showroom. Beautiful clothing and products with no pressure to buy. The men's section may be small but hubby came away with a lovely polo shirt and cap.

Louis dropped us back out at the showgrounds and other guests were keen to book a tour with her. Fabulous morning!

An interesting tour of Goondiwindi Cotton Farm and a drive around the town. We were very appreciative that on this very hot day with minimum numbers (just our family of 3) the tour went ahead and Mike, our tour guide/driver wasn’t phased by having such a small group. We visited the farm and received very informative commentary by Mike and were able to grasp an understanding of how this industry works - how the ground is prepared, growing, irrigation and harvesting. We then saw clothing that is made from the local cotton at the company’s shop in the town. Morning tea was delicious damper and coffee at the Customs House Museum where we had plenty of time to look at the museum collection of machinery and artifacts. This is an excellent tour for visitors as you learn a lot about the local area as well as cotton growing.

Our guide, Mike, was a very knowledgeable man and was also well able to explain the complexities of cotton farming to the uninitiated in a clear, informative, interesting and amusing manner. We came away impressed with the modern day farming methods employed at Alcheringa which ensure the most efficient use of water and employ technologies such as GPS (for accurate furrow alignment for all farming and irrigation equipment) and drones (for identifying weeds and allowing spot spraying, reducing use of chemicals). All fascinating stuff ! Well done to Goondiwindi Cotton !

This was such an interesting and enjoyable tour. Our guide, Lois, did a great job. We all learned so much about the cotton industry. We visited a cotton farm and a gin, then had an informative tour of Goondiwindi, complete with coffee and damper at the Customs House Museum. The tour finished with a visit to the Cotton Farm Shop and the opportunity for some retail therapy. Thoroughly recommended.

Well worth spending the morning touring with Mike and his wealth of knowledge. We don’t always go for the tourist type tours but decided on short notice to do The Cotton tour and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We now know a lot more behind the scenes of irrigation and the work and $$ put into the industry. We have an appreciation of the efforts put into farming using less pesticides, minimum water for maximum output, even recycling waste products and old cotton garments. When we travel through the Murray Darling Basin we know our farmers are working towards a sustainable future. Well done Goondiwindi Cotton and Thank You

As a city girl, I am not well-versed in farming practices, and I learned so much about the irrigation systems and leading technologies used in Australian cotton farming. Hats off to our entrepreneurial farmers, always looking to do things better and more sustainably. The tour leader is a charismatic local who gave us lots of fun facts about the city and region as well.

I enjoyed the tour of Alcheringa Cotton Farm, where I learnt about cotton growing and irrigation practices. As well as touring the fields the farm had an excellent educational display in one of the buildings. I was pleased to discover that modern cotton farming is much more efficient in the use of chemicals and water than traditional practises. Back in Goondiwindi, we were lucky with spring sunshine as we enjoyed morning tea with damper, at the well maintained Customs House Museum. The tour finished at the Goondiwindi Cotton shop, where they had high quality cotton garments for sale.

        What an great experience.
Driving into Goondiwindi, we had seen the cotton fields and wondered about them. This tour answered our questions.
We were picked up from our accommodation, at 8:30am, and our tour guide, Lois, introduced herself, and then the other folk that were travelling with us. There were 8 of us, excluding Lois, and the group were friendly.
Lois was informative and concise in her explanation of how things worked in the cotton industry, and was happy to answer questions along the way.
We saw and learned of many places, in and around Goondiwindi, and it’s history. We went out to the cotton fields, and got to see it close up. We got hands on with samples and watched a video on cotton growing.
We finished our tour at the Customs House Museum, with morning tea.
I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a more than a self drive tour.
