    • New Requirements for Kiana Passengers February 2018 Recent changes to the Queensland Workplace Laws have made it necessary to reassess the minimum requirements for Kiana passengers to enable us to meet our duty of care and establish an acceptable level of risk. While offering a sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands and a visit to Whitehaven Beach Kiana is primarily a live-aboard dive boat. Kiana travels 64km offshore to Bait Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef and is currently the only overnight vessel doing so. Our crew are all qualified Dive Instructors and we take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our guests and mitigate risks. Our recent risk assessment has highlighted 3 areas of risk that we are concerned about. 1. Understanding the instructions of the crew 2. Swimming Ability 3. Mobility in an emergency Understanding Instructions Kiana carries a crew of three. While our crew come from various nationalities the language spoken on Kiana is English. All briefings and emergency instruction are given in English. It is therefore imperative that all passengers have a good understanding of the English Language. In the past we have allowed groups of passengers where one acts as the interpreter. Unfortunately we can no longer accept this scenario. All passengers must be able to clearly understand safety directions and instructions given in English by the crew and be able to complete the required safety forms in English. Swimming Ability Passengers with limited swimming ability will be provided with floatation devices. However in order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level we require that all passengers have at least some swimming ability. Each passenger’s self-assessment of their swimming ability will be required prior to boarding Kiana. All passengers must acknowledge that they are able to swim in deep water without a flotation device unassisted for 1 minute. Mobility Kiana is an 18 meter sailing ketch and as such cannot cater for passengers with limited mobility. In order to meet our minimum safety standards passengers must be able exit the vessel unassisted in an emergency. If necessary passengers with questionable mobility will be required to demonstrate, prior to departure, that they can exit from the interior of Kiana to the muster station on the aft deck unassisted. All passengers must be able to climb a 1.5 meter high ladder unassisted. Passengers who cannot meet the above minimum safety standards will be refused boarding and returned to the booking agent for a refund.

      Great two day cruise
We did the 2D1N cruise of the Whitsundays. The itinerary was very nice. Kayaking and snorkeling on the first day near Hook Island. The following day we had breakfast surrounded by sea turtles and visited whithaven beach. The food was great. The sleeping bunk for two people was adequate. The captain heated up the water for the hottub after snorkeling, which was wonderful because I got cold in spite of the wet suit. Interesting information about the nature were given by Brad and Cutter.

      Two wonderful days at sea!
We had a wonderful 2-day adventure on the Summertime, a ship built in 1945, which is a handmade wooden ship and not one of the soulless plastic boats. We enjoyed snorkelling, sightseeing, hiking, kayaking and some wild rides on the waves in the Whitsundays. Arielle, Andy and Antonia 😉 made us feel very welcome and made sure we wanted for nothing. Food was freshly prepared and delicious and drinks are provided and you can bring your own. We had a lot of fun on board, also with the open playlist that everyone could contribute to. We can highly recommend a trip with Summertime and her great crew.

      Amazing journey on the Summertime
We had the best time on the Summertime boat with Audrey and Aaron. They were super attentive to our needs and made us feel right at home. Meals were great with plenty to eat. The activites were fun and they had plenty of anecdotes on the area and the cruises. I would totally recommend !

Best sailing experience I ever had on a commercial tour!!
Absolutely amazing!!! Wonderful experience and highly professional crew (Dan & Nico). For who was interested they gave us a demo of the basics of sailing as well, which was great! The crew had also a lot of knowledge of the surrounding area and they were taking their time explaining to you whatever you asked! Beautiful sailing boat, good food on board and a really nice trip thru the Beautiful Whitsundays!! 10/10 ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!

Beautiful trip on relaxed boat with great crew and fellow passengers
Fabulous 3 day/2 night trip on Whitsunday Adventurer with captain Ed and deck hand Nicole. Very enjoyable trip shared with 8 others on catamaran where we enjoyed Whitehaven beach and snorkelling on the inner reef. The crew were very knowledgeable and helpful and nothing was a problem. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting a lovely relaxing trip.

My only bad experience in Australia in 6 months' time
Don't book with this company. Go spend the money on something else! My only bad experience in Australia in the 6 months I've been here. When you share your bad experience with them trying to solve the issue, they simply tell you they don't see a reason to help you and they eventually just decide to ignore you. On March 7 I joined the 2 day 1 night tour on the British Defender. A sailing tour that should have been cancelled. More than half of the time we had really bad weather that had already been predicted earlier this week. The one day sailing tour was already cancelled for this day because of the wind. Those people got rescheduled for a another non-sailing tour, but this one eventually got cancelled too. Ours didn't. This really felt like pure greed from the men at the top within this organisation. Not very surprising these days, but still disappointing. A cancellation from the customer's side would incur a 100% fee, so I still joined. They rather put you on a tour with a very mediocre experience than cancelling it and rescheduling or paying the refunds. They don't care if you have a good time or not. Don't expect any luxury on board regarding the food or the accommodation itself. The food on board was good, but basic. The accommodation and its facilities were the bare minimum and not comfortable. The boat might fit 26 participants besides the crew, but at the expense of comfort. I was the last one that was allocated a bed, but earlier that week there had been a huge leak underneath that bed, so it wasn't even ready, there were no sheets or pillow and the mattress was still soaked. Luckily for me, there was a participant that last minute decided to not join after all (right after stepping onto the boat), so I could get their bed. It's still sloppy from their side and if that 26th participant had still joined, we would have had a big problem. Seemed like they could not be bothered with fixing it 100% before letting a new group board. The snorkeling stops were fun and the crew for this tour definitely did all they could to make the best of it (the one star is for them solely). Overall, this tour was not worth the $459 I paid for it. I feel exploited and scammed.

Insane sailing 3 day trip to Whitsunday Islands
This trip was insane. We were a small group of 12 people and because of that we got really close and had a very good time! First day: sailing & sunset picknick at the beach. Second day: Whitehaven Beach, snorkeling & sunset on the boat. Third day: snorkeling & sailing back to the harbour. The captain Mal & skipper Tom made our trip unforgetable. The meals were so healthy and decorated beautiful, always so tasty. I would recommend this trip on Eureka to everyone.

The Kiana is compact, with a place for everything and everything in its place - yet at the same time surprisingly spacious. At no point did the boat feel crowded, rather we felt like there was surplus space for everyone. Below deck was very comfortable and cosy, and I had a great sleep both nights.

The trip out to Whitehaven Beach was fab; I was expecting there to be far more people there but it felt like a little exclusive slice of quiet heaven with few people there.

The food, courtesy of Paul, was genuinely amazing. I hear that the legend of the slow-cooked lamb has reached as far as Peru, and for good reason. Not only was the food great and of better standard than I can usually be bothered to cook at home, but with really great presentation that was honestly surprising for being on a boat. I wish I had the capacity to have eaten more of it. We brought snacks with us just in case, but they were unnecessary. What a treat to forget about clocks and phones, and to only be governed by sunrise, sunset, and meal times.

Diving and snorkelling alike were 10/10. Our group had both divers and snorkellers and we were all agreed it was some of the best we had enjoyed. Maddie is an excellent dive master, with comprehensive briefing and care both above and below water that makes for a perfect and relaxed dive. She took us on some brilliant dives, always pointing out critters that we would otherwise miss, and taking amazing photos.

Brett was the perfect captain, so friendly and hilarious, and with great stories - both anecdotal and informative. A highlight was sitting together after dinner whilst he told us about the reef and how we can all do our bit to contribute to its longevity.

The Kiana ohana are exemplary; with Paul preparing poetry in the kitchen, Maddie making magic underwater, and Brent weaving stories and dreams, we had the best trip ever and our expectations were exceeded at every turn. Their passion for their work and the reef really stands out, and in all honesty their cheerful and cheeky countenance made the trip. We wish we could have stayed forever! Outstanding. Thank you all so much.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this amazing review. Brent is definitely super passionate about the reef and helping it. We do our best to cater passengers, sometimes thinking outside the box. The crew endeavour to visit the best snorkelling and beach spots in the Whitsundays, glad that our hard work pays off :)

Fab Trip Def one of the highlights of our trip to Australia. Lovely boat supplying everything you need The Crew, Brett the skipper for his expertise knowledge and Kindness. Jack of all his incredible food and Jess for all her help and diving experience.
All equipment supplied in excellent condition. I cannot say enough about this trip it was so memorable. The real highlight other than snorkeling and seeing a turtle on Barrier reef was mooring over the reef overnight with no other boat around miles from land sunset on one side of boat and moon rising on other This is as good as life gets Highly recommend this trip

Our time with Kiana couldn’t have been better. The boat was comfortable and the captain, Brent, was very experienced, wise and funny. You can tell he loves the boat, the sea, the reef, and his job. He would tell us all about the reef, the navigation and lots of sea stories. We felt really safe and in really good hands. The rest of the crew, Maddie and Yanis, were amazing as well. We snorkeled and went diving for three times with Maddie as our instructor; we loved it and loved her. She does a really good job. The chosen spots were amazingly beautiful. We enjoyed gorgeous sunsets and would sit at night to have a chat and stare at the stars. We had the best time. The food was cooked by Yanis and was really good and elaborated. He is an amazing chef and he will be an even better marine biologist!
The only suggestion would be having a couple of spare plant based milks for breakfast in case of lactose intolerance/vegan. Although there was not a full vegan option, we could enjoy most of the really nice veggie dishes!!!

Thanks again for the amazing time!
    With love, the catalans :)

The cruise on the MS Kiana is a great operation that I couldn't recommend more. The boat is a spacious sail boat with decent sized bunks and a lot of space on the deck to relax in the sun or shade. Meals on board were fantastic, especially given the size of the galley! The itinerary was also great -- one of the few boats to go to the outer reef; sailing through the Whitsundays was also a nice change of pace from all the speed boats. Can't beat sunrise/sunset or the stars out on the water with no one around!

Cannot say enough good things about the crew. Greg, Kyle, and Capu were fantastic and looked after us well. The boat unfortunately had mechanical issues midway through our trip which led to us coming back a day early, but regardless the crew always had everything under control and made sure we were having a great time. Brent, the owner, also was very honest about the situation and made all the guests whole by generously providing a full refund and allowing us to sleep on board the final night in the harbor given we didn't have other accommodation planned.

Would recommend to anyone looking to spend a few days in the Whitsundays!

If you’re looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience, you can’t look past Kiana! We did the 2 night / 3 day sail and our time in the Whitsundays wouldn’t have been what it was if we hadn’t done this sail. An absolute highlight of our trip around Australia.

The captain and owner, Brent, cares so deeply about the reef and providing you with an incredible experience. We were so well looked after and his passion for the environment and happy energy is contagious. He also runs the boat so well. Everything is clean, tidy, safe and organised.

The crew (Maddie and Bailey) were also great who provided us with some yummy meals (delicious roast lamb and gravy… and yummy snacks like fruit salad) and were super fun to be around.

The snorkelling and diving was amazing, particularly on the outer reef. Staying overnight on the outer reef was also truly special.

With no more than 14 guests on board, you definetely get a very personalised experience.

We just can’t wait to come back!

Brent and Maddie gave us a really great few days on the water. They were both incredibly knowledgeable, accomodating and friendly. It was basically like hanging out with friends for a few days. Also the food on board was genuinely amazing. Fresh, healthy, home-cooked food 3 times a day. 100% recommend a trip with these folks for anyone headed to the Whitsundays and wanting to dive or snorkel on the reef.

Enjoyable trip on the Powerplay boat! The staff (Ellie and the Skipper) were brilliant, food was lovely and the boat was very clean!

Personally I think the trip is a little over priced. We left the port at 3pm the first day and arrived back by 11:30am on day 3 so it really is a 1.5 day trip as opposed to 3 days.

I thought when I originally booked that I booked a double room for me and my partner. It said ‘shared double room, must have two people’. To me that meant you couldn’t book a double room if you were travelling alone on the trip and so two people must be booked! We were lucky that the other couple we shared with were so nice and easy going!

Apart from the above, a really enjoyable trip and we met some really great people!

Thank you for the feedback and taking time to review our product Powerplay! I have passed along the information to our operations team to make sure that it is clear to everyone about the bedding types. If it says shared you will be sharing the area with another group of people. When it reads Private, this means the cabin is just for yourselves. Besides this we are happy you enjoyed your time out with us!

A truly fabulous and memorable experience with caring and attentive crew and skipper. The views, food, land, dive and snorkel experiences were amazing. Great attention to detail and incredible food. The 3 day, 2 night experience is great value for money and I'll be back for the 5 day tour. These people really care about the reef, are eco-certified and deliver on everything promised and more.

Incredible experience with Brent, Maddy and Scooter. Great combination of good people, comfortable living, hikes, seafaring and snorkelling/diving. Brent is a great, experienced captain that exudes passion about conservation of the reef and can fix anything on the boat. Highly professional and knowledgeable. Perfect way to experience the Great Barrier Reef and Whitsunday islands! Would sail with kiana again for sure

We cruised for three days on Kiana in November 2021. Great crew. They were very knowledgeable about the reef. We went scuba diving on the outer reef with a dive guide the entire time. Safety standards were excellent. Good food. Flexible for vegetarians. We enjoyed the relaxed, stress free holiday pace.
