- New Requirements for Kiana Passengers February 2018 Recent changes to the Queensland Workplace Laws have made it necessary to reassess the minimum requirements for Kiana passengers to enable us to meet our duty of care and establish an acceptable level of risk. While offering a sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands and a visit to Whitehaven Beach Kiana is primarily a live-aboard dive boat. Kiana travels 64km offshore to Bait Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef and is currently the only overnight vessel doing so. Our crew are all qualified Dive Instructors and we take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our guests and mitigate risks. Our recent risk assessment has highlighted 3 areas of risk that we are concerned about. 1. Understanding the instructions of the crew 2. Swimming Ability 3. Mobility in an emergency Understanding Instructions Kiana carries a crew of three. While our crew come from various nationalities the language spoken on Kiana is English. All briefings and emergency instruction are given in English. It is therefore imperative that all passengers have a good understanding of the English Language. In the past we have allowed groups of passengers where one acts as the interpreter. Unfortunately we can no longer accept this scenario. All passengers must be able to clearly understand safety directions and instructions given in English by the crew and be able to complete the required safety forms in English. Swimming Ability Passengers with limited swimming ability will be provided with floatation devices. However in order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level we require that all passengers have at least some swimming ability. Each passenger’s self-assessment of their swimming ability will be required prior to boarding Kiana. All passengers must acknowledge that they are able to swim in deep water without a flotation device unassisted for 1 minute. Mobility Kiana is an 18 meter sailing ketch and as such cannot cater for passengers with limited mobility. In order to meet our minimum safety standards passengers must be able exit the vessel unassisted in an emergency. If necessary passengers with questionable mobility will be required to demonstrate, prior to departure, that they can exit from the interior of Kiana to the muster station on the aft deck unassisted. All passengers must be able to climb a 1.5 meter high ladder unassisted. Passengers who cannot meet the above minimum safety standards will be refused boarding and returned to the booking agent for a refund.

- AdrianN8250 contributionsHolidayWhat a fantastic experience! We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Brad and Cutter who made our trip such a memorable event. Highly recommend you seeing the Whitsunday Islands on the Summertime with the crew.Written 18 August 2024
- yasminem7140 contributionsBest tour of the Whitsundays!Amazing trip!!! We were blessed with incredible weather conditions and the crew went above and beyond to create such a great experience for myself and my friends. Could not recommend the bullet tour enough! Big big thanks to the crew today including our skipper Damien and our amazing deck hands Sarah and Renee!Written 16 August 2024
- timbuktu600 contributionsTwo wonderful days at sea!We had a wonderful 2-day adventure on the Summertime, a ship built in 1945, which is a handmade wooden ship and not one of the soulless plastic boats. We enjoyed snorkelling, sightseeing, hiking, kayaking and some wild rides on the waves in the Whitsundays. Arielle, Andy and Antonia 😉 made us feel very welcome and made sure we wanted for nothing. Food was freshly prepared and delicious and drinks are provided and you can bring your own. We had a lot of fun on board, also with the open playlist that everyone could contribute to. We can highly recommend a trip with Summertime and her great crew.Written 19 May 2024
- P7287COlouiseg0 contributionsAmazing journey on the SummertimeWe had the best time on the Summertime boat with Audrey and Aaron. They were super attentive to our needs and made us feel right at home. Meals were great with plenty to eat. The activites were fun and they had plenty of anecdotes on the area and the cruises. I would totally recommend !Written 28 April 2024

For who was interested they gave us a demo of the basics of sailing as well, which was great! The crew had also a lot of knowledge of the surrounding area and they were taking their time explaining to you whatever you asked! Beautiful sailing boat, good food on board and a really nice trip thru the Beautiful Whitsundays!! 10/10 ABSOLUTELY RECOMMENDED!!Written 17 April 2024

- markpN7983UP0 contributionsMy only bad experience in Australia in 6 months' timeDon't book with this company. Go spend the money on something else! My only bad experience in Australia in the 6 months I've been here. When you share your bad experience with them trying to solve the issue, they simply tell you they don't see a reason to help you and they eventually just decide to ignore you. On March 7 I joined the 2 day 1 night tour on the British Defender. A sailing tour that should have been cancelled. More than half of the time we had really bad weather that had already been predicted earlier this week. The one day sailing tour was already cancelled for this day because of the wind. Those people got rescheduled for a another non-sailing tour, but this one eventually got cancelled too. Ours didn't. This really felt like pure greed from the men at the top within this organisation. Not very surprising these days, but still disappointing. A cancellation from the customer's side would incur a 100% fee, so I still joined. They rather put you on a tour with a very mediocre experience than cancelling it and rescheduling or paying the refunds. They don't care if you have a good time or not. Don't expect any luxury on board regarding the food or the accommodation itself. The food on board was good, but basic. The accommodation and its facilities were the bare minimum and not comfortable. The boat might fit 26 participants besides the crew, but at the expense of comfort. I was the last one that was allocated a bed, but earlier that week there had been a huge leak underneath that bed, so it wasn't even ready, there were no sheets or pillow and the mattress was still soaked. Luckily for me, there was a participant that last minute decided to not join after all (right after stepping onto the boat), so I could get their bed. It's still sloppy from their side and if that 26th participant had still joined, we would have had a big problem. Seemed like they could not be bothered with fixing it 100% before letting a new group board. The snorkeling stops were fun and the crew for this tour definitely did all they could to make the best of it (the one star is for them solely). Overall, this tour was not worth the $459 I paid for it. I feel exploited and scammed.Written 16 March 2024

- ladinam20240 contributionsInsane sailing 3 day trip to Whitsunday IslandsThis trip was insane. We were a small group of 12 people and because of that we got really close and had a very good time! First day: sailing & sunset picknick at the beach. Second day: Whitehaven Beach, snorkeling & sunset on the boat. Third day: snorkeling & sailing back to the harbour. The captain Mal & skipper Tom made our trip unforgetable. The meals were so healthy and decorated beautiful, always so tasty. I would recommend this trip on Eureka to everyone.Written 2 March 2024

What an experience. I wanted a dive specific multi day sail experience, and I got so much more. Brent and Maddie (the dynamic duo of the Great Barrier Reef) went above and beyond to ensure we all had a memorable experience. The food was amazing and plenty of it, the dive gear was all in excellent condition, bunks were comfy, but most importantly we were guided by a master reef guide and dive instructor that just showered us in knowledge and full time stoke. This is not a party boat, it's a trip for people who truly want to experience the beauty of the great barrier reef with an excellent team that care so much for this part of the planet.
As a solo traveller with dive experience it was perfect for me, but also would recommend to anyone (non divers) who just wanna get out there!

Airlie Beach, the city that we chose as a base to visit the Great Barrier Reef.
Coincidentally, longtime friends would do the same. So we made a sailboat together with another family of Brazilians, an Australian and a New Yorker in addition to an amazing crew. A total of 17 people on board of Kiana. Three days to remember. An incredible experience, far from any luxury, with an agenda dictated and coordinated by our Captain, in the middle of the ocean with a spectacular scenery that began with the sunrise and ended with a full moon seen from the bow of the boat and with no cell phone signal. Snorkeling and diving in the waters of the dreaded Great White Shark and visiting one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Sharing the boat with different people, in a reduced space with controlled time for bathing (for saving water), eating different but very tasty meals prepared by our Argentine chef Xavi and strictly listening to the instructions and information from our Captain Chris, assisted by the other Chris (in-training captain) and Alejandra (instructor).
Airlie Beach, alone, is worth the visit. A small and charming beach town in Queensland. Thanks God, the climate and the good mood made these days even more wonderful having the privilege to have beautiful sunsets and an incredible sky with a full moon.
Thanks !!!!

What an absolutely amazing trip. We went on the 2 night, 3 day sail onboard Kiana and couldn't recommend the experience more highly. We felt in extremely safe hands. The crew were in sync and knew exactly what they were doing. They were a pleasure to chat with over the few days, all extremely passionate about what they do and knowledgeable about the reef. They went out of their way to ensure we had a 10/10 experience. Brent the Captain is engaging and informative in his story telling - with a side of humour. He also has a killer taste in music based off the playlist that was pumping as we sailed back into harbour. Maddie, the dive instructor was a superstar - ensuring an exceptional experience for the experienced divers (Mags) and beginners alike (myself). She scuba dives like she was born under water and was clear in her instructing and patient with teaching underwater. Jack was a crack up once we started chatting and whipped up fantastic meals for the guests - I was especially appreciative of the high quality vegetarian options. We will absolutely be back, we're already talking about planning our next trip (and trying to get a group together for a possible private charter ;) !!). Thank you so much again to the crew for the highlight of our 4 week holiday around Australia!!

Amazing 3 day, 2 night cruise around the stunning whitsundays and outer Great Barrier Reef. The Kiana boat was old but a lovely boat! The crew on board where amazing and great fun! Chris, jack, Xavi and Joanne were all fantastic and made the trip extremely enjoyable. The diving was also very good, as an intro diver both Joanne and Jack where very patient and reassuring. All round a fantastic trip. Would highly recommend!

5 day Outer Reef sail and dive on Kiana. A great experience for all the family. Brent, Bailey and Jack worked as a very professional team to look after all our varying needs.
From first time teenage diver, parents experienced divers and me, a wobbly senior snorkeling, who hadn't snorkeled for more than 40 years. Being on the outer reef was amazing. No crowds! Whales, fish and colourful coral.
We enjoyed the meals on deck and our quarters. We were certainly well fed. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly crew.
Be brave and take the plunge and visit the reef.

I highly recommend the Kiana Sail and Dive team and trips. Brent, Maddie and Jack are a fantastic crew that blend expertise, flexibility and friendliness in a way that guarantees a relaxed, enjoyable and safe sail and dive experience. They are a passionate team that are committed to ensuring their passengers have a great time, and to sharing their love of the ocean and the Great Barrier Reef.
A special call out to Maddie, for her diligent dive leadership, ensuring that we were all confident and comfortable under the water, regardless of previous dive experience. Honourable mention also goes to all the whales, for having a whale of a time while we were there.

I can't speak highly enough about the crew at Kiana, Brent and Maddie made our trip unforgettable! Both of them are extremely knowledgeable about the reef, and they share their knowledge in a very humble and patient way.
The food was amazing, everything was fresh and tasted amazing.
I would recommend taking the 3-day trip to anyone wanting to experience the Whitsundays at its best. Kiana visits the Outer Reef, so you'll get to see more fishes and other animals than in the inner reef.

We had the BEST time cruising around the Whitsundays with Captain Brent and Skipper/Dive Instructor Maddie on the Kiana. They made sure everyone was safe, comfortable, and well- fed. They also shared their deep knowledge and appreciation of the ocean with us.
The upper deck of the boat was spacious and the sleeping quarters were compact but comfortable. The showers were hot, and there was plenty of beverages and tea on board. The food was spectacular! We had lamb roast, spag bol, cheesecake and tons of snacks.
We saw stingrays, turtles, a trillion types of fish and even a sea snake (from a safe distance on the boat)! It was the sailing trip of a lifetime, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bit of adventure.
Thank you, Brent and Maddie, for a truly wonderful time!

Great trip visit whitehaven for the afternoon, overnighting off Haymen 1st night, and outer reef 2nd night. Captain Brent was great, very accommodating host and informative, happy to field questions and chat. Dive Master Maddy was fantastic, took us through the basics as we hadn't dived for many years. Cook Jack kept us fed and happy with plenty of food. The dive sites were good, plenty of fish. Shame to see the results of coral bleaching. Dont expect luxury, there is always limited space on a boat. Small boats mean you are always sharing space, which was fine. Everyone was really friendly and relaxed. We had 2 teens and a 10yo. They enjoyed the trip too. Great trip. Great crew. Can highly recommend.
