  • New Requirements for Kiana Passengers February 2018 Recent changes to the Queensland Workplace Laws have made it necessary to reassess the minimum requirements for Kiana passengers to enable us to meet our duty of care and establish an acceptable level of risk. While offering a sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands and a visit to Whitehaven Beach Kiana is primarily a live-aboard dive boat. Kiana travels 64km offshore to Bait Reef on the outer Great Barrier Reef and is currently the only overnight vessel doing so. Our crew are all qualified Dive Instructors and we take every measure possible to ensure the safety of our guests and mitigate risks. Our recent risk assessment has highlighted 3 areas of risk that we are concerned about. 1. Understanding the instructions of the crew 2. Swimming Ability 3. Mobility in an emergency Understanding Instructions Kiana carries a crew of three. While our crew come from various nationalities the language spoken on Kiana is English. All briefings and emergency instruction are given in English. It is therefore imperative that all passengers have a good understanding of the English Language. In the past we have allowed groups of passengers where one acts as the interpreter. Unfortunately we can no longer accept this scenario. All passengers must be able to clearly understand safety directions and instructions given in English by the crew and be able to complete the required safety forms in English. Swimming Ability Passengers with limited swimming ability will be provided with floatation devices. However in order to reduce the risk to an acceptable level we require that all passengers have at least some swimming ability. Each passenger’s self-assessment of their swimming ability will be required prior to boarding Kiana. All passengers must acknowledge that they are able to swim in deep water without a flotation device unassisted for 1 minute. Mobility Kiana is an 18 meter sailing ketch and as such cannot cater for passengers with limited mobility. In order to meet our minimum safety standards passengers must be able exit the vessel unassisted in an emergency. If necessary passengers with questionable mobility will be required to demonstrate, prior to departure, that they can exit from the interior of Kiana to the muster station on the aft deck unassisted. All passengers must be able to climb a 1.5 meter high ladder unassisted. Passengers who cannot meet the above minimum safety standards will be refused boarding and returned to the booking agent for a refund.

I've been looking forward to leaving a review on this new trip by the Kiana and her "new" owner/operator Brent. This review is for the 5-day outer Reef diving tour which is considerably different from the usual 3 day to Whitsunday/Reef offering.

The ever passionate and incredibly knowledgeable Brent wanted to give more access to the outer Reef specifically for scuba divers to access some untouched, unspoiled and amazing parts of the GBR that most people have not experienced like this. Superlatives (nor photos) do not express enough how vibrant, extensive and healthy some of the reefs we dived were and despite a very recent cyclone Brent the incredibly experienced Captain made the most of the trip and his 20+ years of local knowledge allowed him to choose exactly the most comfortable, best and safest moorings and dive sites for the conditions.
If you've been left jaded diving on GBR trips from Cairns or even into the Coral Sea of late this will restore your faith in the amazing organism it is and can be.
This is not some maxi catamaran, it is a 16.5 m timber sailing boat which brings a whole new character and intimacy to the trip but the numbers are restricted significantly for passengers compared to the usual shorter Whitsunday trips to make it very comfortable and livable. It is a purpose built dive vessel however and was easy enough to set up for your 3 to 4 dives everyday.
What makes the trip special however is the crew. Brent and Maddie go out of their way to ensure that your trip is comfortable, safe, fun and delicious with good food that catered well for special dietary requirements and kept everybody's tummy full and smiles on their faces especially the infamous lamb hungi.
Diving due to the uncommercial nature of the dive sites, is from a RIB tender accessed via ladder and platform on the back of the boat.
If you love diving and you love coral and critters and want to experience the GBR the way the brochures and documentaries say it should be, you've got to put this on your Bucket List. There is no other operator doing anything like this from that location, making it truly unique and special and well worth it. We will be back, it's not the type of trip you only do once, you've been warned!

Hi Tomas, thank you so much for your amazing feedback! It is hard to describe how truly special and individual this trip is but you've really explained it in a nutshell! We are so glad that you had a great time. As you have said, it really restores your faith in the Great Barrier Reef once you see the pristine dive sites that Brent will take you to. Thank you again for your words and we look forward to welcoming you back on board in the future. Take care :)

What an absolutely amazing trip. We went on the 2 night, 3 day sail onboard Kiana and couldn't recommend the experience more highly. We felt in extremely safe hands. The crew were in sync and knew exactly what they were doing. They were a pleasure to chat with over the few days, all extremely passionate about what they do and knowledgeable about the reef. They went out of their way to ensure we had a 10/10 experience. Brent the Captain is engaging and informative in his story telling - with a side of humour. He also has a killer taste in music based off the playlist that was pumping as we sailed back into harbour. Maddie, the dive instructor was a superstar - ensuring an exceptional experience for the experienced divers (Mags) and beginners alike (myself). She scuba dives like she was born under water and was clear in her instructing and patient with teaching underwater. Jack was a crack up once we started chatting and whipped up fantastic meals for the guests - I was especially appreciative of the high quality vegetarian options. We will absolutely be back, we're already talking about planning our next trip (and trying to get a group together for a possible private charter ;) !!). Thank you so much again to the crew for the highlight of our 4 week holiday around Australia!!

Wonderful 3 day adventure on Kiana.. Brent our skipper has undoubtedly salt water running through his veins, his knowledge of sailing, diving, marine ecology is truly outstanding.. Throw in his sense of humour and genuine interest and care for his passengers on board just made my trip a magic experience.. Brent's crew on Kiana with dive master Leo and onboard cook and hostess Laya were also equally welcoming.. A whole 3 day adventure on the high seas sailing, diving and snorkeling on the Great barrier reef and chill out time swimming on the most stunning of beach on the planet at Whitehaven beach.. Thank you Brent and crew and thank you to Kiana yacht for getting myself to amazing destinations throughout the whitsundays and reef and safely back home to port.. I will certainly return and highly recommend this trip to all who have an adventurous spirit

Despite it being rainy for 2/3 days on this boat, Brent and Maddie made sure we had an excellent time visiting the Whitsundays and diving/snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. The crew's enthusiasm, professionalism, and expert knowledge ensured we got the best experience possible. The boat itself had ample room both outside and in to relax while wailing. The sleeping space is cozy but the beds were comfortable and I slept well. The food was excellent, and you can buy beer and wine with meals as it's a fully licensed ship. I highly recommend this trip for someone who wants a more in depth and personalized experience compared to a crowded day trip.

What an experience. I wanted a dive specific multi day sail experience, and I got so much more. Brent and Maddie (the dynamic duo of the Great Barrier Reef) went above and beyond to ensure we all had a memorable experience. The food was amazing and plenty of it, the dive gear was all in excellent condition, bunks were comfy, but most importantly we were guided by a master reef guide and dive instructor that just showered us in knowledge and full time stoke. This is not a party boat, it's a trip for people who truly want to experience the beauty of the great barrier reef with an excellent team that care so much for this part of the planet.
As a solo traveller with dive experience it was perfect for me, but also would recommend to anyone (non divers) who just wanna get out there!

5 day Outer Reef sail and dive on Kiana. A great experience for all the family. Brent, Bailey and Jack worked as a very professional team to look after all our varying needs.
From first time teenage diver, parents experienced divers and me, a wobbly senior snorkeling, who hadn't snorkeled for more than 40 years. Being on the outer reef was amazing. No crowds! Whales, fish and colourful coral.
We enjoyed the meals on deck and our quarters. We were certainly well fed. Nothing was too much trouble for the friendly crew.
Be brave and take the plunge and visit the reef.

I highly recommend the Kiana Sail and Dive team and trips. Brent, Maddie and Jack are a fantastic crew that blend expertise, flexibility and friendliness in a way that guarantees a relaxed, enjoyable and safe sail and dive experience. They are a passionate team that are committed to ensuring their passengers have a great time, and to sharing their love of the ocean and the Great Barrier Reef.
A special call out to Maddie, for her diligent dive leadership, ensuring that we were all confident and comfortable under the water, regardless of previous dive experience. Honourable mention also goes to all the whales, for having a whale of a time while we were there.

If you’re looking for a truly unique and unforgettable experience, you can’t look past Kiana! We did the 2 night / 3 day sail and our time in the Whitsundays wouldn’t have been what it was if we hadn’t done this sail. An absolute highlight of our trip around Australia.

The captain and owner, Brent, cares so deeply about the reef and providing you with an incredible experience. We were so well looked after and his passion for the environment and happy energy is contagious. He also runs the boat so well. Everything is clean, tidy, safe and organised.

The crew (Maddie and Bailey) were also great who provided us with some yummy meals (delicious roast lamb and gravy… and yummy snacks like fruit salad) and were super fun to be around.

The snorkelling and diving was amazing, particularly on the outer reef. Staying overnight on the outer reef was also truly special.

With no more than 14 guests on board, you definetely get a very personalised experience.

We just can’t wait to come back!

We had the BEST time cruising around the Whitsundays with Captain Brent and Skipper/Dive Instructor Maddie on the Kiana. They made sure everyone was safe, comfortable, and well- fed. They also shared their deep knowledge and appreciation of the ocean with us.

The upper deck of the boat was spacious and the sleeping quarters were compact but comfortable. The showers were hot, and there was plenty of beverages and tea on board. The food was spectacular! We had lamb roast, spag bol, cheesecake and tons of snacks.

We saw stingrays, turtles, a trillion types of fish and even a sea snake (from a safe distance on the boat)! It was the sailing trip of a lifetime, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone who is looking for a bit of adventure.

Thank you, Brent and Maddie, for a truly wonderful time!

Airlie Beach, the city that we chose as a base to visit the Great Barrier Reef.
Coincidentally, longtime friends would do the same. So we made a sailboat together with another family of Brazilians, an Australian and a New Yorker in addition to an amazing crew. A total of 17 people on board of Kiana. Three days to remember. An incredible experience, far from any luxury, with an agenda dictated and coordinated by our Captain, in the middle of the ocean with a spectacular scenery that began with the sunrise and ended with a full moon seen from the bow of the boat and with no cell phone signal. Snorkeling and diving in the waters of the dreaded Great White Shark and visiting one of the most beautiful beaches in the world - Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Sharing the boat with different people, in a reduced space with controlled time for bathing (for saving water), eating different but very tasty meals prepared by our Argentine chef Xavi and strictly listening to the instructions and information from our Captain Chris, assisted by the other Chris (in-training captain) and Alejandra (instructor).
Airlie Beach, alone, is worth the visit. A small and charming beach town in Queensland. Thanks God, the climate and the good mood made these days even more wonderful having the privilege to have beautiful sunsets and an incredible sky with a full moon.
Thanks !!!!
