Sleep under the stars on the Great Barrier Reef
Great experience overall. When you arrive on your first day be prepared to be on an anthill with hundred + other day trippers that arrive with you on the ferry. You will not be admitted to the private area where the reefsleep tents are until 3 pm when the ferry departs with the day trippers. This time between 3 pm and when the ferry arrives again around 11 am the next day is very enjoyable. You and the other guests have the pontoon to yourself to enjoy snorkeling and the underwater observatory. The food and drinks were also good, they are generous with the included beverages and we enjoyed all of the provided meals (keep in mind you are on a pontoon in the middle of the ocean). There has recently been a strike, and we noticed that in the demeanour of the hospitality staff on the pontoon taking care of our group. They were not shy in expressing how tired they are due to being short staffed. It came across as a bit crass but they still did their best. The diving staff and staff on the ferry were amazing. Very kind and plentiful, there was always someone in blue to help or answer any questions. There was a bar with complimentary beverages for reefsleepers, vip seating and plenty of snacks, coffee and tea.

    Fantastic day out
We travelled on the Camira Purple Boat tour on November 16th. Before getting into the meat of the review, I just wanted to point out the unfortunate negatives first. 1. When we checked in at the check-in desk at Port Airlie, we were informed that due to strong northerly winds, there was a chance we may not make it onto Whitehaven Beach (the reason we booked the tour in the first place). (It was disappointing to be informed of this within an hour of departure, as this was the only reason we booked this tour, and so the day started off on a poor note). *these winds only happen 10% of the year, according to a crew member* 2. During our approach to Whitehaven Beach, the captain told us that they were going to “give it a go” with stopping on the north side of the beach, which excited all of us. 10 minutes later, the captain informed us that they’d changed their minds and that we weren’t going to make it onto Whitehaven. This sucked. This sounds like a negative review, but it’s not, as though we didn’t make it onto Whitehaven (though we were led to believe so), we still had one of the best boat trips of our lives. First and foremost, props to the crew who were spectacular, through how helpful and funny they were. They made what could have been a pretty good day out into a fantastic one, and that was all down to how they made everyone feel throughout the trip. Tea, coffee, beer and soft drinks were kept nice and cold on eskis throughout the day, whilst the food on offer was truly delicious and a real highlight. Though not making it onto Whitehaven was a shame, the alternative spot of Chance Bay was beautiful (though a bit busy), and probably one of the best beaches you’ll find. By the end of the day, we were chilling in the sun on a boat ride back to Airlie, downing cold drinks like it was no one’s business, and we realised that regardless of whether we made it onto Whitehaven, we still had a brilliant day out, and that was thanks to the team on the Camira Purple Boat. I’d recommend this trip and this team to anyone.

    Best Cruise on the Whutsunday!
The view was awesome, and sight seeing was spectacular mind blowing! Coming back from the Hamilton Island the sunset was breath taking. Didn't take any photo's of sunset as my phone died taking alot of photo's and video's of the beautiful islands. Loved every minute of it! Definitely coming back with my kids next time!

    Picture perfect scenery
We booked a cruise with Whitsunday ferry to Hamilton Island. The terminal is amazing and our checkin girl was lovely. So friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I forgot her name. The ferry itself needs a renovation. Its a bit rundown. Even the Radoms which protect the radar from the elements was broken in 2 pieces. Staff didnt explain very well where the swimvest were stored. Everything was over the microphone and very hard to understand. There is selfserve for tea and coffee on board. We took the ferry via Daydream island. The trip itself was great, lovely scenery with blue water. Picture perfect. We would do the trip anytime again if we are back in the area. If you signed up with Turtle Club you get a discounted rate on the fare.

    Amazing day out
What an all inclusive amazing trip, everything was 10 out of 10. Boat, staff, food & destination, it was nice to cruise around the Whitsundays on the Camira, it felt more personal than the larger boats & more relaxing than the speed boats, would definitely recommend this trip to any age group.

    Brilliant experience!
Really great day out with the family. Plenty of food throughout the day with something for everyone (the children are very picky but they were happy!). Whitsunday Island is beautiful and Whitehaven Bay surpasses every photo - truly breathtaking! We saw stingrays, tropical fish and turtles just swimming around in the warm shallows. There are a lot of steps to the lookouts and beach so definitely bring water and try to be first off the boat to make the most of the two hour window. The snorkeling was also brilliant, the crew really tried hard to deliver an amazing experience despite strong winds and currents. Our 10 year old loved seeing all of the coral and fish, and we got some fantastic photos from our 17 year old using her waterproof case. The boat is very clean and well organised and the crew were extremely friendly and welcoming. There was a great selection of soft drinks; tea/coffee, coke, coke zero, sprite, water and fanta. For alcohol there was cider, lager and white wine. I am a very fussy drinker so although it wasn't to my taste, everyone else was catered to very well. We had a fantastic family day out and mostly lovely people on the boat. The only potential issue would be if we booked as a family but then had stags/hens on the same tour but I'm sure the crew would manage that well. Overall, we highly recommend this tour - just watch out if you have mobility issues as the steps/walking around the boat when sailing/getting in and out of the tenders could be an issue. Thank you to the whole crew for a lovely day!

2 days messing about on the water!
The reef sleep is amazing. 2 days of snorkelling, diving, eating, drinking, chatting, snorkelling, photographing, laughing and more snorkelling! There is so much to do and the crew are superb - striking the right balance between attending to their guests and leaving us to pretty much do what we want. The highlight was the scuba diving - loads of fish, a turtle and a shark. If you get the chance, you should do this!

    Beware booking Camira
We had Camira booked from the UK months ago. The trip was cancelled 1 day before because of industrial action. Locals tell us this has been happening a lot so beware of making a booking. By the time we knew about the cancellation we could not book an alternative .

My partner and I were thrilled to be going to the great barrier Reef, devastatingly my partner came down with COVID one day before the trip.

I tried calling cruise Whitsundays but could not get through to anyone. I tried sending an email, but was advised by auto reply to expect a 72 hour response time.

Due to the above I physically went into the cruise Whitsundays office in Airlie beach, to see if any exception or credit could be arranged due to sickness.

No exception could be made and I was advised the entire booking $ would be forfeited. Which was extremely disappointing. We easily could have chosen to still go on the trip while sick, this type of policy would certainly promote this behaviour.

But we would have hated to make any other guests unwell and opted to not join the trip and lost $600.

We had hoped due the unexpected circumstances that a refund full or partial could be given or a COVID policy would still exist.

We would not recommend booking with cruise Whitsundays to friends or family, instead look for other offerings with more flexible booking terms. We booked this tour in person, the cancellation terms could have been made more clear to us in the store at the time.

Additionally prior to coming to Airlie beach, I spoke with someone who works with cruise Whitsundays. They advised me not to book any tours with the company. Wish I had listened, unfortunately on the day we set aside fo the great barrier Reef, they were the only option available. Our original booking with another company had cancelled on us and we did not want to miss out on the reef.

Do not book with Cruise Whitsundays

Had a wonderful Day out on the Reef the snorkeling and weather was amazing, the crew were so helpful and caring. they looked after my two young boys and made my trip so much more enjoyable. Although i was very disappointed to hear about the way the staff were being treated. They were being under paid and were going through hard times with negotiations with there employer. this was upsetting to hear after the crew were so helpful and made our day so enjoyable. LIFE YOUR GAME CRUISE WHITSUNDAY give your employees some respect.

We are sincerely sorry we could not deliver on your Great Barrier Reef experience. Unfortunately, this was a result of mechanical issues that the team were working on and hopeful to rectify. We do have a very fresh team and they were working their best to be as transparent and as informative as they possibly could be with the limited information they were provided. I can assure you that as a business we have taken learnings away from this and worked on new communication plans.

A disappointing day trip to the reef, characterised by a lot of upselling of extras and some quite badly trained (or just badly mannered) staff.
With hindsight we should have done more research and booked earlier with an operator more suited to dedicated or more experienced divers/snorkellers. But as we were limited on time and booking with short notice this was our only option as certified divers to dive this part of the reef. The boat was quite full but we had superb weather all day so that didn’t matter as we sat back and enjoyed the smooth ride to the reef. During this the commentary over the loud speaker was unintelligible so we had no idea what was being said including during the safety briefing. When I went in search of the toilet I stopped to listen - you can add on extra products such as guided snorkelling and trial dives, helicopter ride and snorkel safari.
When you arrive at the pontoon there is insufficient table/chair space for everyone (whatever number this vessel is intended for, there are not enough places to sit or change). We headed back to the main boat for most of our day which has fairly tight seating and not much room to move around.
We had booked a dive and had a briefing on the boat beforehand. It felt a little casual without much attention to safety and details. Our guide was using laminates to remind him of all the information (fair enough, don’t want to forget anything) and half way through our briefing another guide came over and demanded the laminates for her own group - taking them away from him whether he liked it or not. He did his best to finish up the talk but I suspect missed out some of the information. We collected our gear on the pontoon, full length 1mm suit and then divers can use a shorty plus different fins to the snorkellers. The shorty wetsuit was literally falling apart, the seams were coming apart, the fabric was worn and ragged. The procedure for getting our gear on and doing checks was quite chaotic with different guides coming over and tightening my straps (hadn’t requested help - he just walked up before I had finished sorting it out and pulled on a strap), telling me not to walk around in fins ( I wasn’t, I was trying them on) or ushering us over for a photo with a cringey banner proclaiming ‘Barrier Reef 2023’ for us to purchase later. One of the other guides came over and took my fins from the space under the bench I was sitting on (I’d taken them off again to carry to the entry point), so I had to ask for another pair. I was a bit taken aback but before I could at anything she’s gone off with them. Our guide seemed a little unsure of where we were going to begin (maybe inexperienced, maybe just not a great communicator), he unfortunately lost his mask on entering the water (having just reminded us ‘one hand on your mask, one hand on your weight belt’) and led the dive in quite a haphazard fashion. He did check on our air a couple of times but otherwise I didn’t feel he was checking on us very much to see if we were ok. In addition, we went down to about 16m (very bare, colourless reef, not much sea life) then up to 5 then down to 12, back to 6, down to 9 - I’ve never equalised so much on a dive. Not sure why he did this - we all said afterwards that it felt uncoordinated and unnecessary to go up and down so much especially as there was very little to see.
After the dive, there was no debrief or check to see if all was well. We were all quite cold (could have done with coming up 10 minutes sooner if our guide had checked if we were ok) so we got out of our suits quite quickly in order to warm up to be told ‘turn them the right way round before you give them back’ - which did not feel very customer focused, instead his job was done and could you get on with getting the gear off properly. The only shower was on deck and quite cool so didn’t help to warm you. We didn’t dive again but had a quick snorkel in the afternoon. This was ok, quite a lot of life near the surface. One of our party watched us from the pontoon. There is a ‘lifeguard’ on the top deck watching over the snorkellers. For much of the time we were out, he was chatting with the people on the deck and not watching the ocean despite a sign saying ‘please don’t talk to the lifeguard’.
Tea, coffee and hot chocolate were available all day - unfortunately no alternative milk. I asked about oat milk and was told they don’t offer it any more because the staff kept drinking it! The staff member did find a carton of soy (had been open a couple of weeks) which was good enough. Lunch was an odd mixture of plain rice, chicken in a sauce, meatballs as well as cold meats, cheese and a couple of salads. ‘Afternoon tea’ was another odd selection - packets of lamington cakes, cheese/crackers/salami and olives/melon. The cakes were not dairy free so I was left with only savoury. Would have liked a biscuit or similar. Also by the time I reached the front of the endless queue the cakes were all gone anyway.
There was a water container at one location on the main boat with small plastic disposable cups. You could purchase soft drink cans (expensive) or beer ($12 a can) which felt like profiteering to us.
We took the semi-sun trip (like a glass bottomed boat) at the end of the day. Not much to see but if you didn’t want to get wet it would be an experience. The boat touched the coral at one point and the staff member down below with us went up to have a word with the guy steering the boat to tell him he ‘nearly hit the reef’- no nearly about it from where I was sitting but she did her best to gloss over it saying it was tricky to steer the boat as you couldn’t see the reef from the surface.
During the trip back to the mainland, we were given the opportunity (twice) to buy photos from our dive.
Several of the staff were really friendly and chatty (Ido particularly who we booked our dive with first thing) but equally many were more interested in chatting with each other, getting finished or processing you through what felt like a production line of the reef experience.
Having taking a similar trip from Port Douglas the previous week we found so many things lacking by comparison and felt the ethos here was not one of professionalism, customer care and service to the reef as well as the visitor but instead one of commercialism and a quick buck to be made from tourists. I think this tour may have been more appropriate for those less familiar with the underwater world and the importance of preserving the ecosystem who are looking to experience the reef in a day, have a picture and then leave. It’s a commercial enterprise first and foremost and it shows.

We had the weather on our side with our trip to The Reef. The crew were awesome. I had an absolute amazing experience doing the guided snorkelling with Ophi. Definitely worth the extra cost and I am so glad I did it. It was a once in a lifetime experience - bucket list worthy! Water was clear and we swam amongst the coral and fish with Ophi commentating the whole way. Nice to see a few Nemos too! Lots of whales to been seen travelling to and from The Reef. For those thinking it’s beyond them I urge you to trust the staff and go for it! Thanks so much to all the crew and special thanks to Ophi!!!!

We booked through P&O to go to the reef. The 2 hour trip out was ok. Was surprised that there was no information offered about the reef it's self - just lots of upselling to get people to spend more on extra experiences. On arrival there were no instructions on what to do and not enough seating on the pontoon. We made it onto the second glass bottom boat and I was shocked in how brown and lifeless the reef was. Didn't see anything except one fish. Had lunch back on the boat which was good but a line up as only one side of the buffet was open. Fumbled around with getting snorkling gear with no experience or help and no staff in sight. Snorkling was an interesting experience but again, the reef is brown and boring, lifeless besides a few small fish. A photograph took my photo while snorkiling with a huge underwater camera while in. No showers, just 3 small cubicals for changing. The 2 hour trip back was extremely rough with many very sick. As we came around the island it became flat and calm and as the lady I was with (who is neurodivergent) is very sensitive to people vomiting, I suggested we move to the outside seats to get fresh air. Unfortunately a few minutes after we moved we came back out into rough water. The spray from every single wave we hit came over the top of us, saturating us, stinging our eyes and it was really painful everytime it hit. The person I was with couldn't move as she was too scared of falling over with the boat bouncing everywhere so we sat huddled for the next 20 minutes until we evebtually stopped. No crew came to check on us or offer help even though it was obvious we were in distress. It was the most terrifying, painful and stressful situation we had ever paid for. On return to our cruise, the experience had affected and overwhelmed my friend so much that she shut herself in her cabin for the rest of the cruise. I would never recommend this trip to anyone. Was a waste of $300 each.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. It is unfortunate the weather was less than ideal on your recent cruise to the Whitsundays. I apologise that you felt that there was no information provided about the reef or instructions on what to do. Our team follow a well rehearsed script on what they need to share with guests on route to the pontoon so I am disappointed that you did not hear the messaging provided. I understand that at times the reef may seem lifeless due to the brown colouring, however this is the nature of the staghorn coral which makes up a large mass of the coral at Hardy Reef. I am deeply sorry that you found your return trip so traumatic, I can assure you that safety of our guests is extremely important to Cruise Whitsundays and our Operations Team review conditions, swell and wind direction before making the decision to proceed with tours. I can assure you that our on water team are very attentive to those in need should they see guests are in distress.

Fantastic day for the whole family. Plenty to do for everyone. And spotting the whale was amazing. Snoring was amazing. The food was lovely and staff made the day,
