Great trip
Easily the best thing we did during our time in Katherine. The guys driving the boat through the first gorge were super knowledgeable and we felt we had more than enough time on the half day tour to canoe down the 2nd and 3rd gorge

Full Day Kayak
We booked the full day. It says canoeing but it’s actually a kayak. Mute point but worth noting as kayaking is much easier. Kayaking is quite popular so prebooking is a must to avoid disappointment.

The guides on the boat with friendly and accomodating and gave helpful advice about the kayaking.

Kayaking has to be the best way to experience the gorge as you can only get to 2 gorges in the tour boats or by hiking and limited access to the gorge. In the kayak you can explore as far as your energy levels take you up to the 9th gorge (about 10kms one way).

As others have said the portage (carying the kayak up the rocks between gorges) is the hardest part of the trip. The rocks are round, but many are slippery so you really need to be comfortable to scramble slippery rocks in the water pushing or pulling a kayak. If this doesn’t sound like something you would be up for then just do the half day and you can get to the third gorge without too much of this.

Tip: suitable shoes would be shoes that can get wet, are grippy and ideally protect your ankles. We brought thongs but did not wear them rock scrambling for obvious reasons. In hindsight boat shoes or reef boots would have been better.

If a bit of adventure and clambering over rocks sounds like fun, you will be rewarded with the quiet and more untouched upper reaches of the gorge.

We stopped for lunch at a nice quiet beach In the 7th gorge and got the Kayak to the end of the 8th gorge, walked up to the 9th with glimpses of the 10th.

After turning around the good news is the current will be with you on the way back and whilst slightly more nerve racking, going down is easier than going up.

Definitely worth doing, just be prepared for the portage if you expect to see most of the gorges!

Great experience
Oct. 2020
Beautiful experience at Nitmiluk! You will take a boat to start your journey, then you'll be free to explore the gorge at your own pace in your canoe. You can stop to have a swim when you want, take pictures and have a break on little beaches where it is safe.
You won't be disappointed!

Nice day out but don’t think they should call it a tour
Jul. 2020 • Family
Nice views, relaxing way to explore the river can stop where you like. You can paddle up to 3 sections of river we only did 1.
Wasn’t the kind of tour I’d expected obviously I didn’t research enough I’d basically call it canoe hire as no guides. We didn’t bring food either as so kids were starving.

A sensational way to experience the majesty of the gorge
Jul. 2020
I cannot recommend this trip more highly - one of THE BEST NT experiences! What a sensational way to experience the gorge - at your own pace - jumping in for a swim whenever the mood takes. We paddled to the end of the 3rd gorge, and then walked and swam into the fourth gorge on the half day tour. It was also perfect for those travelling with children, as there were plenty of opportunities to experience the majesty of the gorge without travelling as far. This was our second canoe trip into the gorge and won’t be our last. (Well done to the Nitmiluk staff too who are working hard to fill in the Covid-gaps, quick to respond to enquires, and are going out of their way to provide an awesome experience in difficult times)

Morning in the gorge
Oct. 2019 • Couples
Fantastic morning beginning with a boat cruise through the first gorge with our guide Harley who explained do's and Don'ts together with interesting facts. We then collected our life vests and paddles and boarded our double canoe. Time to explore the next two gorges, swim in the water holes over the next three hours. The gorge is just beautiful and a must if you are in the territory. Wonderful morning, stunning experience.

Recommend also with teenagers. We did half day canoeing in gorges. Spotted crocs , birds and other wildlife. We reached end of 3. gorge. Friendly and helpful crew, pointing out and stopped the boat to have a closer look at the freshwater crocs on the way . Trip is a must when visiting NT 😀

Thank you for your positive feedback PerN503, We are happy to know that you enjoyed your time. The Gorge really is a lovely destination for teenagers, as it offers the opportunity to learn, slow down - always good with teenagers generally exposed to a continous overload of information- together with the adventure element. Thanks for spending your time with us while visiting the NT!

Great way to explore the canyon
Beautiful way to explore the canyon, but I would not recommend going further than the 3rd gorge, since you have to carry your canoe to the next gorge by yourself which is already a very hard job for only 5 minutes, the way to the 4th gorge is 40! minutes! So, take it easy, bring a picknic and find a nice beach to relax on.

Thank you for your positive review 1970saskiak, Canoeing at the Gorge is spectacular and certainly requires different levels of fitness, depending on which Gorge our Guests decide to explore. It's always important to be prepared, read the information provided by the Reservations Team or on the Parks and Wildlife website, and, as you suggest... taking your time. Nature is better enjoyed at a slower pace. Thanks for deciding to spend your time exploring our country 1970saskiak

Do not rent a canoe for the whole day!
Today we made the canoe tour 4,5 h (half day tour). We were picked up with a boat at 8.00 am which bring us to the first gorge (30 mins less canoe time). We arrived there and had a short walk to the nose-piece. There were a “cage” of all life jackets and paddles. Everyone wanted to get in this “cage” and as fast as possible into the canoe (in summary it took 30 mins again till we were in our canoe). As we must be back at 11.45 am we had only 2 h 45 mins in the canoe (not as mentioned 4,5 h!!!). Additionally we could’t reach the third gorge as there were no water. In my opinion the tour guide has to inform about this issue before spending money to this tour.

We hope that you enjoyed your time at the Gorge, in spite of the situation. We encourage you to contact us directly, on sales@nitmiluktours.com.au , should you decide or have the opportunity to return to the Gorge. Day trip a waste
Jul. 2019 • Couples
My wife and I booked the day trip but had to give up after we got to the end of the 3rd. gorge. No way could we get the canoe over the long stretch of rocks into the 4th gorge. We aborted and lazily got back to the staging point still in time to go back with the morning group. We weren't the only ones with an English and French couple doing the same. When we got back to the office they were polite but no way would they consider a refund. Left a bad taste in your mouth and I wonder what overseas visitors think. A big con!
