This experience was was totally worth the 600km round trip from Darwin. Because to be on this cruise, on the beautiful yellow river, surrounded by awesome wildlife was priceless and totally worth it. On arrival at Cooinda Lodge there is plenty of parking. You meet the Yellow River Cruise crew and are taken by bus a short ride to the jetty and then board the boat. Plenty of spacious seating. Our guide, Ali was excellent. She was fun, knowledgeable and made sure we saw the best if everything. The 1.5hr cruise exceeded our expectations. The scenery was simply stunning, we saw so many crocs, some feeding on fish, lots of birdlife too and beautiful water lilies everywhere. The setting was stunning and we half expected to see Crocodile Dundee himself! Awesome, simply wonderful. Highly recommend to anyone visiting this region.
Please note: the price of your tour does not include a permit into Kakadu National Park which we purchased online at an additional cost of $40 per adult and is valid for 7 days.
The web page for the Yellow River Cruise does not make it clear that this is a requirement.
That aside, it was totally worth it!

Cannot rate this experience highly enough. We were lucky enough to enjoy a sunrise cruise, with Mandy as our guide. Mandy is a local indigenous woman who has grown up in the area, and whose family has inhabited the area for generations. Mandy was kind enough to share some personal stories and anecdotes with us as well as a wealth of information on the native (and not so native) flora and fauna. We saw Crocs, Water Buffalo, Pigs, Darters, Magpie Geese, White-Bellied Sea Eagles, a Jabiru, Jacanas, Kites, Whistling Ducks, and more. Highly recommend.

While we stayed at Cooinda, we took advantage of going on a Yellow Water cruise. I had had friends who had recently done a cruise, and they were very impressed. We took the 9.00 am cruise which included being bused both ways. Our guide, a young woman in her first year with the company, was excellent. She was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna and obviously loved the environment in which she worked.
She made the two hour cruise an absolute pleasure.
We saw so many bird varieties, many were specific to the area and many I had never seen previously. She gave everyone plenty of time to take photos and to ask questions before moving on to another animal or plant. Her knowledge of the tree varieties , the water Lilly varieties , the weeds - both good and bad, and grasses and the palms was first rate. She told us lots of amusing anecdotes regarding some specific crocodiles, and the behaviour patterns of the crocodiles in both the wet and the dry seasons. I can not recommend this tour highly enough.
It is an absolute must for anyone wanting to gain some insight in to how Kakadu’s wetlands function.

We came during the Wet Season and had a guide who told us basically straight up that we'd be lucky if we saw a crocodile. We saw some Jesus Birds, a flying fox colony and some sea eagles, and eventually a crocodile after two hours. I felt bad for the guide because he seemed over it and like he wasn't having a lot of fun, which obviously affects the general mood of the tour. He would run out of things to point out to us quite frequently, and I often wished we'd booked a shorter cruise through our time on board. The guide was open about the fact that the cruise is much better when it's Dry, as it forces all the wildlife (crocs/buffalos/etc) to hang in the same place. As we went past a flood plain, he described how amazing it is during the Dry season, and I realised we probably should've given it a miss and come back in the next season.

The Yellow Waters are still very pretty. It's stinking hot in the Wet Season so dress lightly and definitely don't forget to spray yourself with bug spray and sunscreen before hopping on board.

What an amazing sunset tour. Because of the recent rain , the water lilies are all over the billabong & waterways. We saw a number of crocks, water buffalo (both in the trees and a herd grazing at sunset) & birdlife including a Sea Eagle hunting for Barra & two Jabiru. The sunset is something that cannot be missed. A HUGE thank you to Greg for his great commentary that was full of excellent local and cultural information coupled with a great sense of humor. He turned a great trip into a very memorable & unforgettable experience. Recommend ?? - ABSOLUTELY. A highlight to our visit to Kakadu.

So, I did the cruise organised through AAT Kings one-day Kakadu National Park trip. Despite it being the end of the dry season, there is still plenty of water and wildlife to see- not just lazy crocodiles sunning themselves on the riverside. The guide was extremely knowledgeable, and able to answer just about every question thrown at him. The cruise is about 1.5 hours in length, which is good amount of time to see most of the attractions; crocs, Jabirus, native ducks, sacred lotus flowers etc. Would highly recommend if you are in the Kakadu National Park area, to take the time and do one of these cruises.

This was by far the most beautiful and educational experience we had during our time in the NT
It goes to show how staff make or break anything ... and our guide and skipper Dennis (with 2 N as he constantly and humorously reminded us) was the best.
His local knowledge and extremely quick wit and laconic style was an absolute delight.
We learnt so much about culture and the environment in such a wonderfully delivered way it made us laugh for the 2hrs on board and will remain with us forever.

The cruise was just breathtaking ... and we were lucky with the time of year that enabled us to experience many different things that aren't part of the wet or drier period up here.

We thank Dennis (with 2 N) for his flair and humour and for sharing his culture and knowledge with us.

Make sure you absolutely do this cruise ... and if you get Dennis you will get an added bonus for your journey.

Enjoy

This two-hour cruise over the wetlands was awe-inspiring and very moving. At one point I looked up at water lilies framing a white egret against the mangroves and it felt like some sort of Garden of Eden. We saw crocodiles of all shapes and sizes as well as an abundance of birds: jabiru, red-combed jacana, plumed whistling ducks, whistling kites, magpie geese, pygmy geese, rainbow bee eaters, cormorants, the list goes on and on. The lotus lilies were like big green plates, following the sun. Our guide, Chris, had grown up in the park and he knew the place intimately. He respectfully acknowledged the Indigenous owners and gave local names for features and animals.

Amazing sunrise tour, the setting is just amazing, informative commentary, the wildlife was plentiful, water lilies as far as the eyes could see. This was a high light of our Darwin/Kakadu/Jabiru trip. This tour is a must do.

This was an amazing experience. Our tour guide Greg clearly loves what he does, is passionate about the native flora, fauna and is well versed in indigenous history and language. His enthusiasm was infectious and meant that we all really got into the experience. Not that this was too difficult mind you, we saw an abundance of wildlife on this particular day including: several crocodiles; whistling ducks; jabiru; spoonbills; sea eagles; jacanas; magpie geese; darters; water buffaloes; horses and a pig. We ended the cruise with a jaw-dropping sunset before returning back to the wharf. To be honest I hadn't even noticed the time passing. Do bring sunscreen, insect repellant and your water bottle (they have iced water on the boat and you can fill up).
