Great fun
Great fun and super easy to ride on the flat trails between the wineries.

The wineries along the way were all quite different, so gave a good mix of places to visit.

We bought wine at all of them and the bike place comes around to collect them so they don't rattle down the road in your bike.

Definitely a fun day out and minimal fitness required. Would be even easier on e-bikes but was so flat its probably not worth the extra cost.

Good biking, great wines!
Mar. 2021
We had a good day riding our bikes around the Hawkes Bay wineries. Good bikes with baskets for personal things.
All the cycle paths are off road and therefore safe and hassle free. I would recommend the longest offered time frame as we had to rush at the end.
It was also very nice to have the bought wine picked up at the wineries, so we didn't have to drive them around.
I highly recommend taking an e-bike as it gets harder riding your bike after the second winery ;-)

Had a great time cycling solo to Clifton and the Wineries. Great views along the way, Modern bike that functioned very well. Good route that is flat all the way finished off with wine tasting at the end! Highly recommend this for an entertaining day out.

Great way to do a wine tasting!
Mar. 2019 • Couples
The company had great customer service, and helpful advice on the best way to use our time. They provided a map, and picked up anything we purchased along the way. We ended up visiting 5 wineries in ~4 hours. Good quality bikes, great wineries, and food along the way.

Overall not the most beautiful bike route, but the wineries at the end of the route are beautiful!! Ngatarawa and Te Awa were our favorites for their chill vibes and beauty. The tastings were all very reasonably priced, if they charged at all.

So much Fun!
Apr. 2019 • Friends
We booked as a group of 9 people. We had electric bikes & normal bikes. We had so much fun. Im not a big bike riding person but I managed to bike the whole way. We had a great lunch at one of the wineries & lots of tastings at the others. It really was a great day, the body was not even sore the next day! They also pick up all your purchases to give to you at the end of the day to take home. Awesome!

Great wineries, not so great bike rental experience
Feb. 2019 • Couples
Today, we rented 2 bikes for a self guided winery tour of the Bridge Pa area. Not knowing how long we would take before tasting (and biking) became a blur (and unsafe), we paid for 3 hrs = $35 x 2 people = $70. Had a lovely time at Ash Ridge, Oak Estate and Ngatarawa wineries before very stormy weather hit so we returned to On Yer Bike rental after only 2 hrs. In that case, the bike rental cost should have been only $25 x 2 = $50 but they would not refund us. BAD! To add further insult, the rental location is on the site of Ash Ridge Winery...he could easily have offered us a couple of glasses of wine and still had a good profit margin and maintained some goodwill. Instead, I’m writing this message: bike renter beware and boycott Ash Ridge Wines. #dontscrewtourists

Beautiful Summer's day out Biking
Feb. 2019 • Family
My adult family of 4 all really enjoyed a beautiful Summer's day out biking, particularly away from the highway, between the vineyards. Our bikes were comfortable and reliable.
We started with coffee at Ash Ridge, had delicious lunch at the Abbey and very pleasant wine tasting at Te Awa. The initial stretch of the tour is on the Highway for a short distance. In retrospect we may have walked along the grassy ditch to the side of the road over this part as the speeding cars were unnerving especially when first starting. We had good service all round.

A great day out for our company retreat. 20 of us off on a mixture of tandems, e bikes and ordinary bikes. Lunch at Abbey Estate. It was great to have ALL our wine purchased waiting for us on our return. Thanks for a great day.

Disappointing
This is an over priced, money making tour. The bikes were very tired and badly in need of a service. Gears slipped, tyres were under inflated and they creaked and squeaked the whole way. Not worth the $55 per bike.
The briefing and map were vague at best and the initial part of the route was fenced off with a temporary electric fence. When trying to call On Yer Bike on their “if you need help or assistance (for bike break down)” we got through to their answer machine.
The route is not clearly sign posted and we made numerous attempts to find some of the wineries.
2 of the 6 wineries available were closed on the day we visited which wasn’t mentioned in the briefing.
I definitely wouldn’t recommend this and would have preferred a bike ride around the city or along the river.

Don't waste your money or time - Overpriced for basic bicycle hire
Dec. 2018 • Couples
Be very cautious before making a booking - this certainly isn't a winery tour - you won't see how wine is made at all. It's expensive bicycle hire to allow you to pedal between wineries. This post puts me in the 2% 'terrible' category, (I actually do not enjoy writing poor reviews) and I am pleased that many people have had good experiences, but a few things need highlighting for future potential customers. The On Yer Bike operators do not have an agreement with any of the local vineyards and don't even provide a taste or tour of their own vineyard! That costs an extra $49. The marketing is somewhat misleading and promotes the experience as a charming bicycle winery tour - it really isn't! The assistant who served us in the BIKE HIRE cabin knew very little about the region or wines and was evasive when asked if the tour included tasting, uncomfortably indicating that "several wines were available for tasting on the way" - sadly tasting is not included, but you will cycle to visit the gift shops. The pretty bicycles with baskets are not really equipped to handle the stoney tracks - mountain bikes would be much more suitable. It is worth noting that the map provided was quite informative, but needed pencil lines adding to indicate the route. The most alarming issue, and the reason I have written this post is because the map took us on a dangerous highway with no safe cycle path. Before I am told to 'harden up' I'd like to say that we're experienced cyclists, but we quickly got off the main carriageway and into the ditch as the trucks and vans were passing us dangerously close at 100kmph on State Highway 50. No doubt the manager will rebuke and dismiss this post and tell you that "it is only 400 metres on the highway" as he did in a quite rude and dismissive manner with us, but please shop around - there are much better (and safer) winery tours to be found in the region. We picked On Yer Bike Winery Tours out of the Lonely Planet guide which is usually spot on, but quickly abandoned this activity. After some negotiation the manager, to his credit, provided a refund. We love New Zealand, like the area and enjoy fine wines, but as a tourist and consumer, the On Yer Bike experience rates low.

We try very hard to ensure that our customers have a great experience, on many occasions trying to deliver more than they were expecting. However on the odd occasion we are unable to meet a person's expectations - particularly when they seem to not know what they have booked! We had a couple from Australia visit us a few weeks ago who had booked a winery tour by bicycle as it says on their booking confirmation. When they arrived to book in for the tour, they quizzed every aspect of the booking in process, the briefing around the wineries and the bikes. It did make us wonder but by the time we had gone through everything, they seemed quite satisfied and left to spend the day visiting wineries and discovering new wines. We were very surprised to see them back less than an hour later stating that "this [the winery tour] is not what they booked and wanted their money back"! When asked what had happened, they said that they had ridden to the first winery and asked for the "winery tour" only to be told that the cellar doors only conduct wine tasting and do not do behind-the-scenes tours - which is what they were expecting. Every year we deal with thousands of people and our offer has been the same for 18 years - hire a bicycle and visit nearby wineries in the region, pay a small fee to taste their wines and, hopefully, buy a few nice wines to take home! It is not a new or unique concept; you can do a winery tour by bicycle in wine regions all around the world: in the USA, France, Italy and even Australia. How these people got the wrong idea about what On Yer Bike Winery Tours is baffles us. Naturally, this couple were not going to accept they had made an error. In the brief interaction with them it became very obvious that when booking they did not read our website when making the booking. This has obviously led to this bitter review with them criticizing any part of their brief experience to justify their so called "bad" experience. We have had people threaten us before with bad reviews if they did not receive a refund, but this is the first that has written a review. This is regardless of us being generous enough to go along with the idea that they had made a genuine mistake in booking the wrong tour and giving a full refund.
