About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- W9735FCcath0 contributionsFantastic day, small group, lovely leadersOverall the process was smooth to find the yacht, we appreciated the quick response from Nat and Anita was a lovely guide and we learned alot about the environment, history and geography. The kids loved the kayaks, snorkelling and exploring and being on the yacht overall. I would recommend taking some extra food if you have growing children as the food was a bit limited for a full day of activities considering the price - fine for adults but growing children got off and were starving.Written 16 January 2025
- Michelle F0 contributionsWhat memories are made of….We were met by Ralph and Anita who made the entire trip a memory for us to treasure. We sailed to the first bay where they took us ashore to climb the outlook post and then into a second bay where we were given a delicious wrap for lunch. My boys (21, 19 and 16) were allowed to steer the yacht, explore the islands, kyack and snorkel. It was bliss. Would thoroughly recommend.Written 29 December 2024
- Explorer6731760 contributionsThe Perfect DayThis was a dream tour!!! Perfect in every way. Nat and Raif were professional, friendly, and informative. It is clear they love what they do. The sailing was smooth. The prepared lunch healthy and tasty! I would highly recommend this group- worth every penny. Thanks for making our day so memorable!Written 26 November 2024
- AislinnH_130 contributionsSuch a great day. Strongly recommendThis was a fabulous experience. We were a group of 10 friends so we could book out for ourselves. Friendly and knowledgeable crew (Nat and Anita) mixed sailing with history and tourist advice. We snorkled, kayaked, hiked, and sailed. Perfect lunch of fresh wraps and coffee, followed by a wonderful sail back to Russell.Written 19 November 2024
- JonathanNZTrips0 contributionsPerfectionExactly what we wanted for a day on the water sailing the islands, with snorkelling, kayaking and an excellent lunch, as well as even getting to steer the boat. Easy-going but professional crew, and Nat and Anita were excellent company. Highly recommended.Written 3 November 2024
- whitneyleewatson0 contributionsFantastic trip, worth it!We had a fantastic day sailing on Vigilant with Nat & Dallas, they showed us around the BOI with a chance to swim, snorkel, kayak & hike one of islands and some sailing if the wind picks up. We were lucky enough to see some dolphins, penguins, baby hammerhead shark, mako shark & stingray on our snorkel!Written 11 March 2024
- grahamisracing0 contributionsAmazingAbsolutely a memory of a lifetime. The whole adventure from leaving the dock and returning is something you won’t forget. We couldn’t have asked for more.Written 8 March 2024

- Karen59590 contributionsGreat Day Sailing Around Bay of IslandsNat and Anita were great hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our day which had lots of sunshine followed by lots of wind and even a dolphin sighting! - Culture248109025990 contributionsAmazing day in the BayI have spent many hours on the bay of Islands waters , motoring around on power driven vessels, I recently decided to take the opportunity to do things a little differently and Im very glad it did, Nat and her crew on vigilant were amazing hosts, and nothing gives you the chance to appreciate being on the water more than gracefully gliding through it under the power of her sails the lack of an engine rumble means you can hear birds singing on the islands as you go by, and if you're lucky enough to be visited by them the splashes of dolphins. Not to mention a lovely stop over in a quiet bay away from the masses, with the opportunity to go for a bush walk, kayak or snorkel, and chill in the shade of a beautiful Pohutakawa tree. We also have did this trip with three children under 7 and the vigilant team lived up to her name and kept a watch on them. In summary if you want to get a feel for the Bay of Islands this is the charter for you!Written 20 February 2024
- ggutwillig0 contributionsGlenn & Lisa GNat, our Catptain and Anita, her first mate We’re great at showing us the Bay of Islands. The islands and scenery are spectacularly beautiful to see both from the water and our excursion/snorkeling trip on land. I can say without reservation a good time was had by all on board Vigiland that day.Written 18 February 2024
- 22djb220 contributionsAnother wonderful day ….Once again we had a fabulous day out on the water with Vigilant, our 4th trip on the boat over many years !! The weather was perfect, Natalie & Anita looked after us all, with attention to everyone’s needs. We can fully recommend a day out with these guys.Written 17 February 2024
- Beachscape3210 contributionsGreat sail with VigilantWe had a great time, capable and attentive crew, beautiful bespoke and super comfortable sail boat. Very relaxed environment, small group makes it easy and fun. Healthy attractively presented lunch and snacks. Thank you so much, Nat and Anita, you were fantastic! A special “must do” experience in the Bay of Islands. Highly recommended!Written 31 January 2024

After spending a few weeks on a windy and cool (but absolutely stunning) south island we set our sights on Bay of Islands to heat things up! Not wanting to plan too much and stretch ourselves out thin, we agreed that sailing would be our best chance at a Bay of Islands experience we wouldn't soon forget. We found Vigilant and it ended up being exactly what we were looking for. It's hard to narrow the adventure down to just one or two highlights. Everything from simply stepping foot onto such a beautiful boat upon launching, making it around the north tip of Russell and seeing the open ocean, dropping anchor in a picturesque bay where we could swim, snorkel, kayak or explore the island at our own pace, to the delicious garden salad made for us at lunch and a frosty beer for the trek back (BYOB). What really made the sailing adventure memorable though, was filling the sails with the afternoon breeze that picked up. Darren (guest skipper) and Nat had us flying along the surface while the Vigilant held its line, tilted enough so you could drag your foot through the water and feel the occasional spray come off the side of the boat as we plowed through. We aren't sailors, if you can't tell, but we sure felt like it for the day. Thank you Vigilant!

Very nice sailing day. Natalie the captain was professional, kind, chose a nice itinerary, and adapted the sailing to the needs of the group. Nice, sturdy boat and we didn’t have to work as deck hands because she was able to handle it so well. Great day!

Thanks so much for such a brilliant evening - especially as I had messed up the dates and you so kindly accommodated us . 4 of us had a 3 hour eve sail - Nik was wonderfully relaxed , great company and provided a very welcome platter of meats and cheeses and a bottle of wine for sundowners
It’s a lovely boat - a real addition to our stay at Bay of Islands . Highly recommend

We sailed from Russell to Moturua Island with Nat on the Vigilant. It was a great to sail on a classic sailboat. We spent a couple hours on the island, walking on the trails and on the beach. Others on our tour (we were 7 plus Nat) went kayaking and snorkelling (note, there is no WiFi or cafe on the beach, so if you need those things, it may not be for you). Nat made a great light lunch, and we sailed back to Russell. the best part was really the sailing. The breeze wasn't too strong, and died near the end of the day, so we had to motor back in.

I'm not normally a boatie - suffer a bit from sea sickness, so was apprehensive about this activity.
I did not need to worry - the day was perfect weather, and our skipper and crew (Nat and Anita) ensured there were enough distractions on board to keep my mind in other places.
A beautiful day spent sailing to a secluded island, swimming / kayaking at the beach, lovely lunch on board, and very informative hosts.
Would highly recommend Vigilant - small numbers on the boat, and personal attention by the crew.

My wife and I had an amazing time with Nik and Nat on their yacht. We were amazingly well cared for and Nik and Nat both made sure that we had plenty of activities to choose from during the day.
Throughout the day you can feel that they make you feel very welcome, make sure you have a good time, and, above all, make sure they get you home safe.
If you're planning a trip to Russell, my wife and I cannot recommend them enough.

Straight up 5 stars. Nat & Dallas were superb sailing us round the bay. We did it a family of 4. 2 adults and 2 teenagers. They were calm and smooth sailors and we stopped at Motuarohia Island. Kayaking, swimming, and snorkelling in the harbour was magic. The view on top of the hill was spectacular. (Path gets hot in summer and some rough ground for city feet, take thongs-jandals). Lunch was chef quality salad and Rye bread that perfectly hit the spot. The salty sea dogs were great hosts and conversation. The boat easily handles a full booking with various places to sit to be comfy. The Vigilant has a steady and calm nature under sail and makes the sailing very relaxing. Can't say enough good things. We are with all the other 5 start reviews. A wonderful day in a beautiful part of the world. If i came back to the bay of Islands I'd do this again for sure.

We spent a beautiful day in the Bay of Islands, so it’s hard to be critical of Vigilant Yacht. However, had the weather not been perfect, I think this would have been a long day. The boat is getting a bit dated and not is particularly comfortable. We also had 2.5 hours on a beach to do “whatever”. We chose to take a lovely hike. It proved to be a long time just to “hang out”, particularly for those who chose to just sit on the boat. Lunch was a nice, simple salad. Good, but not extraordinary....sort of like the entire journey.

Hi there! We're quite disappointed to read your review, I do believe this says a bit more about you than about us however. Our island time is actually 1.5 hours not 2.5, which for some people isn't near enough time to enjoy our wonderful islands and beaches. We're sorry you didn't enjoy our gorgeous 42ft classic cutter rigged yacht or the absolutely stunning nature and scenery of the Bay of Islands. 99.9% of other people do! Safe travels.

We have just had the most magical day. I don’t usually get on boats as I suffer from motion sickness, but Nat assured me the weather conditions were good and she wasn’t wrong - not only did I not feel sick, I actually enjoyed myself. The setting is obviously gorgeous and they run the whole day like a slick, well-oiled machine, but what makes Vigilant stand out is the personal touch. My nine year old son was able to get hands on and he got such a kick out of that, and we all talked all day (being a family of talkers) and Nat and Anita happily engaged and shared all sorts of interesting stories in return. Not only would we recommend a day out with Vigilant, we intend to plan a return visit to the Bay of Islands so we can do more of the same again!

Our experience on the Vigilant Yacht was absolutely fantastic! Natalie, the captain, was skilled, knowledgeable, and a lot fun. She made the trip so enjoyable. The yacht was well-kept. Lunch was healthy and delicious. The winds were pretty intense on the way back but Natalie navigated them with superior skill and finesse. The day was peaceful and awe-inspiring and well worth the cost.

Sorry for the delay. Catch the ferry in Paihia over to Russell and catch the sail there. The ferry is cheap and runs all day long. Nick and Nathalie could also advise.
