- Paul_batista10 contributionsOne of the best Aussie attractionsGreat five hours spent there. Did the self guided mine tour which was very good and paid guided mine tour which was excellent. A lot to see and so much info. Amazing place. Every one should go see this at least once. Staff are friendly. The cafeteria was clean, cheap and reasonable food. Great value for money for $49 pp.Written 2 January 2025
- We_3_Travellers8880 contributionsWorth it but expensive. Great family activity.Great trip. Went also to see a bit of jousting at Kryal Castle on the way there. Made candles, ate boiled lollies and even bought a frying pan. Stayed nearby and took in the evening Aura Sound and Light Show. My daughter and I had a great time. Expensive though.Written 20 November 2024
- rhonaj3950 contributionsGRAND DAY OUT!THIS WAS WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! I think it was well worth the money, there were some transport delays getting here from melbourne so was there less time than I hoped, I could have easily stayed a lot longer there is so much to do!!! Panning for gold, going down a real disused mine, horse and carriage, soldier re-enactments, really nice food, watching confectionary and wheels being made, blacksmiths and a bunch of other stuff I didn't have time to do - absolutely loved it.Written 17 November 2024
- Fangeloni0 contributionsInteresting history lessonSovereign Hill was very interesting and enjoyable, my view was that it was a little expensive but still it is a must do when visiting Ballarat. My rating was not 5 because when we went there there were school groups everywhere and they had preference and filled the various presentations given. That’s ok but it would have been nice if they could accommodate people who have come from far and wide. Not sure how to fix the issue other than avoiding times when multiple school groups attend.Written 21 October 2024
- 221jodi0 contributionsGive it a big expensive miss.Very very dissapointing in so many levels. Attended with 4 adults, 2 concession and one under 3 yo…Total cost $178! Then.. horse ride extra, photos in old costumes extra etc…. etc… meals in the cafe where they had a playground were all warm, not hot! Nuggets n chips, sausage roll, muesli yoghurt, hamburger and 2 coffees.. nearly $60! No signage at any location to inform you of the history of the place unless you wanted to do a guided tour. We all found it tacky and very uninteresting. Spent 2 hours and we were done! Highlight… bowling alley and confectionary making demonstration. Don’t waste your money and bore your kids.Written 16 October 2024
- fionao7960 contributionsA great reminder of our historySovereign hill is a must visit when in Ballarat. What an amazing recreation of the old gold rush era .so much authentic architecture and the staff dress in the theme in stores of the period too. Highly recommend.Written 11 October 2024
- dragonsquareeyes0 contributionsA great fun family day out and also educationalI arrived here feeling sceptical. My friends were more entheusiastic. Historic reenactment, oldy worldy villages, it's just not my thing. But boy, Sovereign Hill was great! I'm glad I visited. We went on a horse and cart ride, went gold panning (found no gold, sadly) and joined a walking tour. The tour guide was great. I though I'd be zoning out, staring at the trees and fantasising about lunch, but actually he had me interested in the stories he told of historic times in Ballarat. We watched the gold bar show, with gold being melted down and poured back into an ingot mold. We watched old style candy/lollies being made and were allowed to try a piece. Some actors started acting out a scene as we happened to walk along the main street, so we watched that and it was really good. Lunch was at a place on the main street. Not the fancy expensive place, the more pub food place. Hot chips good, chicken nuggets were so yummy! All three of use made use of the toilets at some stage, they were clean and had plenty of toilet paper. We decided to pay for the oldie worldy photographs, where you put on old style clothes and pose for photos. You can pick if you want to be a gangster, a gold miner, fancy lady, and so on. This was lots of fun to do and we liked the results. Worth the money! A great time was had by all, and I would be happy to go there again.Written 4 October 2024
- Karen F0 contributionsWhere history comes alivePut on your walking shoes and get ready for a full day out. Sovereign Hill is timeless. I have visited as a child, a parent, and now as an elderly couple, but it never ceases to disappoint. My husband and I were entertained by the different shows and enjoyed walking around the 1850s Gold town. Our lunch was delicious in the New York bakery. A very enjoyable day.Written 1 October 2024
- Sarbella21610 contributionsTaking us back in time.Being a big review reader before I go somewhere that i intend to travel, I read some of the reviews that were posted because I always find them so helpful making travel plans. I read a lot of people saying it was too expensive to get in and also doing activities once inside, I myself didn’t think that was the case. Besides the entry fee It was only $8 extra each to do the 45 minute underground mine tour, something we enjoyed doing for such a small fee. There are a lot to see for the entry fee and a few things are extra if you want to do them. The old style building and staff in costume was a bit of fun and something different to experience. We had morning tea and it was nice and also a fair price. I brought a really cool large hand made candle and also some hand made boiled lollies that we watched them make. This is a look back in time of our great country. Only thing I missed was the night light show as we drove 2 hours to see Sovereign Hill and didn’t want to do the drive back to Echuca in the dark. It look excellent so we were sorry we didn’t get it. We were in Vic for a week on holidays and had lots to see. It was worth the drive over.Written 28 September 2024
- Global069408175410 contributionsSomething for everyone in winter. 🥶Braved the cold Ballarat evening and actually enjoyed the snow! It was a great experience for the whole family. Something for everyone! Bakery was excellent and raspberry drops never disappoint. Will be back 😁Written 14 September 2024
- krystalsD1860HG0 contributionsA huge disappointment 😞Our experience with our young family was incredibly disappointing, and we regret spending over $157 on entry tickets alone, feeling it was a waste of our hard-earned money. Very little can be done without paying extra money for tours, a 2-minute horse carriage ride costs extra, and they charge for a selfie camera photo. Unfortunately, it failed to meet expectations and won't be something we'll return to, which is a shame.Written 2 August 2024

Lots of food, drink and laughs! Winter wonderland at Soverign hill was everything I was expecting and more. Our tour guide Joanne, amazing! Will certainly be doing further trips with her!Written 21 July 2024

- sargeantsmacranges0 contributionsPoor experienceI found this place to be extremely expensive at a cost of $207 for 2 adults and 2 children both under 10years old. Then once inside very average sites and the horse wagon ride of about 4 minutes at $19 was a rip off. Maybe the driver and assistant could have given a short commentary about the place or at least the horses I must say all the staff were very friendly though. This is my second visit and the first was much better Wont recommend to anyone and wont be going back.Written 5 July 2024

The first part about the Big Bang in 3D is impressive, if a little science-y.
The third part about Ballarat and the Eureka stockade is really cleverly put together, innovative and visually appealing.
It's the middle section on Aboriginal mythology and the Bunjil creation story that I want to talk about. Please designers/creators and educational historians at Sovereign Hill TAKE NOTE! The average Australian knows quite a bit about The Dreaming already. Presenting a creation story as one third of your show: how exactly do you think this is advancing the Aboriginal cause and educating the Australian public and tourists? What a wasted opportunity! Aboriginal culture is the oldest surviving culture on the planet. Aborigines were skilled farmers, land managers, hunters, gatherers, warriors, painters, story tellers, musicians and performers. They have rich oral traditions, complex customs and laws. There is a wealth of knowledge to explore, not to mention the impacts of white settlement on indigenous people which are alluded to but not explored at all in your show. And you chose a single creation story?! The Christian equivalent is 'God created the earth and Adam and Eve' - people naturally baulk at whoop whoop magic people in the sky stories and switch off or think I already know about Aboriginal spiritual beliefs! The thing is, spirituality is just one facet and this was a perfect opportunity to go beyond the typical Dreaming story that most people already know and really showcase Aboriginal people and their rich history and culture so that people walk away with a greater understanding and hopefully challenging their dismissive attitudes such as 'they weren't using the land' and they weren't farmers' or 'their society was not developed.' Instead you wheeled out the same tropes and tired, narrow, 'seen 'em a hundred times' perspectives and your show does absolutely nothing to further understanding and help ordinary Australians see Aboriginal culture for the extraordinary complex wonder it is!

The show is visually stunning and captivating. It is educational too - teaching one about the creation of gold and is impact in Ballarat as well as the indigenous dreaming of the area. You move around from theatre to theatre in buses which drive through the Sovereign Hill town and bush. I cannot recommend Aura highly enough.

Absolutely brilliant….. we had high expectations 20 years ago we saw the original show with actors and horses .. so to see the updated version was amazing. From the beginning of time to the dreaming and the diggings at Ballarat the CGI, video and light show was awe inspiring. We let gobsmacked - learned loads and it was super helpful to go to the night show and then see Sovereign Hill the next day.
Take a jumper — can be cool.
Well worth the $$$ - as we had a family with adult and 16 year old it was expensive to do both - perhaps a deal if you do both events, % off, joint cost.( Sovereign Hill and Aura night show)

The experience began well with the 3D experience going to plan.
However it all went sour from here. We were told that 1 of the 2 bus had broken down and we had to split the group into two trips resulting in 15minute-20minute wait.
The second show by the dam was fine and we had no issues there.
However the last part of the show we had many guest upset as at the end of the show everyone was tired and over the production, there was NO cooling and really STUFFY inside the seating area. Half the guest also had to wait for the bus to drop the first set of guest off and make a returning trip to pick them back up.
Overall, we had a bad experience and would not return or bring other family and friends along.

I loved that this show included the voice of our traditional land owners. It was amazing to see the light show and hear the Dreamtime story about how the stars were placed in the Australian sky. There are 3 parts to the show. Part 1 starts in the theatre. We missed out on that due to technical issues but they compensated us each with a free jar of lollies. Part 2 consisted of a tram ride to an outdoor, standing theatre to see the Dreamtime production. Part 3 had us take a seat in a theatre and hear more about the settlement from an Indigenous person’s perspective. The theatre screen then opened up for a wonderful story consisting of projection, special effects, fireworks, and fire.
It was really well done and had us engaged for the whole time. It is definitely worth experiencing once.

Poor experience with transport issues.
1 vehicle was broken down (which can happen). The event could be better prepared for the idle waiting times between each transported group.
The final ride bus was met by angst as we weren't allowed to exit the hot theatre.
The show itself was an informative experience.

If you never saw the old 'Blood on the Southern Cross' you may quite enjoy Aurora, if however you are like me and have a recent memory of the previous Sovereign night show then Aurora will probably seem like its younger and less coherent cousin. While the inclusion of indigenous history is welcome the story lacks cohesion or a compelling narrative. The beginning segment makes one feel they have stumbled in on a second rate retelling of Star Wars and the lack of walk through the diggings which was previously included makes one feel they have been ripped off in a similar fashion to the early miners by the introduction of gold licences. Don't start a rebellion- stay at home with a cup of coco and save your money.

Awesome evenings entertainment. Very professional animation. Wear casual warm clothes because parts of this trip are outdoors. Began with 3D animated story of the combining of elements to create earth and planets, a trip in open sided bus up the main street of Sovereign Hill and further to open air theatre showing the Aboriginal creation story, then to another theatre with the history of Ballarat Gold mining, finishing with a bus trip back to the main street.

Wow! Makes me proud of Ballarat - and I’m from Bendigo😁! Seriously, our shared history and our contribution to Australian society is massive and seeing the story here - from the Big Bang, through the Dreaming and the historical events depicted so lovingly - is simply awe inspiring. Sovereign Hill (and the Aura show) is, quite simply, a must see for visitors and locals alike. Please, do yourself a favour!

We just loved your previous show, and always took our overseas visitors tomMelbourne to visit and spend 5he overnight. We found, latterly, that the bus go8ng around did not allow for aged friends who could not get off and on, several times but could not see th3 display from their bus, so we stopped bringing anyone elderly. Has this problem been overcome?
Written 20 August 2019
You have to get off the bus, but I would say they may now cater for them. I would call them as the middle segment by the lake may be the issue, but they may have a park bench they could sit on??
