#2 of 4 Tours & Activities in Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park
- Alison S00Absolutely 💯 Fabulous 👌 Cradle Mountain Day Tour.We booked for this beforehand. Picked up at our Hotel Grand Chancellor, and the commentary began once all were on board. Rarely have I been more impressed with so much detailed and interesting information about the entire program. Everywhere we travelled, over the whole journey, while driving or on foot, walking through Ancient Forests, Rarely have I learnt so much in one day. Great variety of countryside, wonderful scenery and weather. It was marvellous. Driver Ben had extensive knowledge of everywhere we went and was passionate about Northern Tasmania. An inspiration. Thank you.
- markmA986CY00Wasn’t part of a tour but had a great interaction with one.We weren’t part of this tour group but walked into the day hut where Paul had his tour group stopped for a coffee break. Paul was warm and inviting and passed on knowledge to us while we took a break from the cold /wet weather that was passing through. 10/10 would recommend this tour company and if we come back to Cradle would take a tour with them.
- suetZ3021KA00Great TimeWe had a great time at cradle mountain with this group. It was an amazing time. We not only heard about the wildlife but about the history. The views at the mountain were wonderful.
- cklaash00Night animal SpottingThe night time animal spotting was terrific. These things are always dependent on animals cooperating but this time we would have had a good time with Jayden even if the animals didn’t turn up. He had the knack though and animals turned up for him and us. Great night
- roxannelazarus00Great tour with lots of wildlife!Belinda was a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge about the national park and its wildlife. We saw pademelons, Bennett's wallabies (many with joeys), brushtail possums, wombats, and were extremely lucky to also see both a spotted-tail quoll crossing the road and an eastern quoll foraging at the Ronny Creek boardwalk. Would recommend this tour to anyone, even without the quolls!
- SusanJ79600Wonderful Experience at Cradle MountainThe highlight of our trip was our guide Cathy. Her knowledge and passion for the environment was second to none. We were very fortunate to be the only passengers that morning , so it was like a private tour. We are not hikers so I would highly recommend this tour to give you an excellent overview of the area. The weather was perfect, not a cloud in the sky . An unforgettable experience at Cradle Mountain.
- robmat_1100It didn't matter that there was only two of usWe had the distinct pleasure of visiting Dove Lake & Cradle Mountain with McDermotts Coaches, although just the wife and myself, the expert tour guide Mel picked us up in her minibus at Peppers Lodge on time and we spent the next two hours being enthralled by not only her broad historical & ecological knowledge of this pristine area but fascinating insights into how the early settlers and pioneers survived in this world heritage site
- PeterK96400The night spotlight was amazingWe booked the night spotlight tour and it was fantastic .. we saw so many animals in there natural environment and we learnt so much from our tour guide .. Highly recommend the night spot light tour
- Ian M00a good way to get a quick idea of the areaOur guide gave us a good commentary on the area. We had a walk to Dove lake and the a look at Waldheims chalet which was quite interesting plus a short walk behind the chalet. Our guide was happy to answer questions and was very helpful.
- 665peterm00Fantastic tour of the night time wildlife at Cradle MountainDefinitely a highlight of my trip to Cradle Mountain, highly recommend. Andy was very knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. We saw many different animals on the tour both from the coach and walking along the boardwalks inside the park.
- S8237KOpaulm00Cradle Mt ExplorerWhat an excellent way to start your visit to Cradle Mountain. Our guided tour with James was full of local knowledge about the area, history and its origin.A couple of short walks included to Glacier Rock at Dove Lake and Waldheim Chalet and lots of advice about other walks/hikes Highly recommended
- laelm202200Twilight tourWe saw such a range of wildlife, including wombats. Andy is a lively local with a good understanding of the area. She handled the mountain road with confidence with a running commentary all the way. We all had a chance to carry the torch with a walk along the boardwalk at the end. So much fun!
- amazonmc00Must do tour at Cradle MountainThis is a must do at Cradle Mountain. Andy our tour guide was fantastic - the coach picked us up at our camp ground, and within 100m down the road we were spotting wildlife. Over 30 wombats, two quolls, possums, wallabies, pademelons, bush chickens..... and then a shooting star at Ronny Creek as we got back on the bus. Andy was very helpful and knowledgeable and made the trip for us.
- howards201000This is the best way to see Cradle Mountain if you have limited timeWe only had a limited amount of time in Cradle Mountain, so decided to book the McDermott's Explorer Guided Tour. This was a great way to see the park. Our tour guide James was friendly and knowledgeable. He presented the facts and showed us around in a great way and was very happy to answer questions and go beyond. All in all, a most enjoyable tour
- loumitchell202100Great spotting!Excellent insights into the park and native animals. Saw a tassie devil in the wild to cap it off - would recommend to anyone coming to cradle mountain

I have visited many countries and done many tours - he’s the most grumpy fella I have across in my life who doesn’t like kids and his motto in life is - my way or high way.
He rushed everyone to every sight seeing, not giving one minute breathing space to enjoy the scenic view and relax though he came late 45mins to pick us up...
All I want to tell him “ take a chill pill, life is too short to be so grumpy in life “.
Hopefully this review will make him realize to be bit more humble and happy in life. We are investing $145.00 in this tour per person, minimum we expect our tour guide to be nice and friendly otherwise knowledgeable and experience wise he gets 5 stars and rest all 1 star.
Some feedback for McDermott tour guide in Tasmania.

Thanks for the feedback, I do agree life is too short, ill discuss this with our guide which in his defence is a bit abnormal given he has had very good feedback on this portal. I hope you did enjoy the rest of your stay in Tassie

This was a good day tour for a solo traveller like myself (or anyone who does not want to drive). The tour was well organised. The driver/guide Ben provided commentaries along the way on topics covering the history of Tasmania including of Cradle Mountain, geology and spots to look out for along the way, and even his favourite restaurants for dinner on the way back to Launceston. Shuttle bus was full so it was a bit packed. The walk thru the moss forest, and the chalet overlooking the valley and the Overland track with wallabies and wombats were a pleasant surprise-would not have thought/known of it if I had gone on my own! Lunch was just a choice of various sandwich/wrap plus "muesli" bar and hot tea/coffee, Only real grip was that we reached Dove Lake around 11.30am and had to leave about 12.30noon. Ben did make it clear that he was not putting up with people who were not on time which was good since that meant we did not have to waste time waiting for stragglers. Ben gave the option for those who wanted to go to Marion's Lookout or walk around the entire lake on condition that they had to take the free shuttle bus back to the Visitor Centre and meet him there at 2.30pm. He advised that it was not worth it since it was windy with scattered showers so there were no takers. But, asked Ben if we could go back to Dove Lake for a quick photo shot since the clouds had lifted after lunch/forest walk and we could see the peaks of Cradle Mountain which he did! Hence my rating for this tour was "Excellent"

What a wonderful day! And best of all, was the absolutely perfect, sunny weather with no wind but our experience probably would have been a very different one had the weather not been so stunning. We booked this tour through Grayline but it was McDermott’s Tours which picked us up so I guess they are affiliated companies. We were picked up at 7:30 and returned at 5:30, so it was quite a long day. The first half hour stop at Sheffield allowed time for morning tea and a brief walk around the town. Then it was on to the new and modern Visitors Centre at the entrance to Cradle Mountain before the bus took us to the beginning of the Cradle Mountain walking tracks. Two short walks were suggested and the guide (who was also the bus driver) accompanied us. The first walk took us past button grass fields on the left and Dove Lake views on the right to Glacier Rock, a small lookout with stunning views. While this was an easy walk for the most part, towards the end there were steps which could prove challenging to those less fit. We then retraced our steps and continued around the lake to the iconic Boat Shed, an easier walk than the first section. For those who are not so fit, it may be worth just completing the walk to the Boat Shed and skipping the one to Glacier Rock. We then had a simple lunch of a bread roll or wrap with a choice of fillings and a few wombat sightings. After lunch, we walked to Weindorfer’s Chalet. Our final walk was one of the best, a ten minute walk through an ancient moss covered rainforest next to the chalet. On our return journey home, we stopped at Ashgrove Cheese where I had a delicious ice-cream. Each section of the day was around an hour with toilets readily available. Our driver/guide, John, was wonderful, very informative and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. So glad we went on this tour instead of driving to Cradle Mountain ourselves. If you want to explore a variety of walks, this tour is not for you but for those of us who wanted an introduction to Cradle Mountain with a few stunning walks, this was the perfect tour.

This trip is really good when one is not under a time constraint. I would say pick-up options from the hotel were really commendable since it saved us a lot of time, especially for ones traveling without a car and who are new to the city. The trip was approximately 9 hrs and Paul, the tour guide really explained well the history of the cradle mountain and its surroundings. We even spotted a Wombat napping!!
Having said all that, I would definitely recommend traveling the mountain on a sunny day as its best seen when there is clear sunlight.

Cradle Mountain was beautiful even on a overcast day. Tony our driver was very friendly and knowledgeable. But I felt it was a long way to travel to spend just 25 minutes at Dove Lake, we basically only had time to do the walk to Glacier Rock. Please be aware that this coach service is used to transport travelers to /from Cradle Mountain and to/from their Cradle Mountain accommodation as well as tourist doing the one day Cradle Mountain tour from Launceston, so there is a lot of time wasted picking up and dropping of these other people who are not doing the day tour.

Having booked our transfer from Launceston to Cradle Mountain we were delighted by the prompt arrival and willingness of Andrew our driver and tour guide, to meet our needs.
Andrew was a font of knowledge about the local area we were travelling through, but excelled once we were closer to Cradle Mountain World Heritage Area.
His attention to detail and willingness to share stories and take us to delightful and picturesque locations was greatly appreciated by all.
A highlight was enjoying lunch and a cup of tea overlooking the Overland Track to Lake St Clair, from a day hut with a great view over Cradle Mountain near Waldheim, followed by a magical walk into Weindorfers Forest Walk where we learned all manner of natural history, botanical plants, birds and animals, and the history of the Waldheim Chalet. Well done Andrew and well done to the McDermott team, it was a great trip!

the entire experience was incredible, and the guides were a wealth of knowledge. they were also super nice and fun, i had a blast! special shout out to kathy who took us out to glacier rock (before the crowd!) when we got to dove lake. our time at dove lake got cut short due to some road closures but kathy definitely made the most of our time and i learnt so much about the area and it’s history. definitely recommend!

Our booked day tour was most enjoyable.Cradle Mt is an Australian gem. Awesome view from Dove Lake. The walk is clearly sign posted, distance and time needed. Cars are parked at visitors' centre and shuttle busses will take you to different points of interests. Amenities are well maintained. Take your rubbish home is strongly encouraged.A viewing centre at Dove Lake is near completion to take advantage of the winter vista. A MUST DO when in Tassie.

Tour was exactly as the itinerary no surprises there. Both tour guide and trainee was good and knowledgeable. My review totally based on how tour is planned. First it was late to pick up 20 mins or more then had a missed pickup and they had done last minute booking which again took 30 mins wait for no outcome. Main reason for my Tasmania tour was Cradle Mountain. But honestly although this tour gave good couple of views it wasn't enough. I had booked with some other tour operator and they cancelled their tour. So had to pick something and ended up with this. We come to Tasmania to see natural beauty. Not to taste cheese. Maybe some are but majority not. I understand some operators have commercial purposes taking people to different business locations. We could have done the Dove lake circuit walk without wasting time on cheese. I am sure you will attract more people if give opportunity to explore more of Cradle Mountain which might explain just 4 of us in the group and I chose it because there's no other option.

Thank you for your feedback and giving us the opportunity to respond.
We are glad to hear you chose to book on our tour and that the tour was conducted as advertised in our itinerary. Many thanks for your compliments on our staff.
We are sorry to hear our tour did not meet your expectations. Early morning pickups can sometimes be tricky, with delays often out of our control, we apologise for that.
Our tour provides 2 short stops enroute to and from Cradle Mountain to showcase some other local attractions but it also provides an essential comfort stop on a 2.5 hour bus journey. We find most guests enjoy the stops at Sheffield and Ashgrove to sample the local produce and stretch their legs. Maximising time in the National Park is our aim and we do this by taking our guests to the highlight areas of the park and enjoying lunch at Waldheim Chalet. Unfortunately the time taken for most people to walk around Dove Lake is 2-3 hours with very few of our guests keen on that much activity in their day.
We are sorry our tour was not what you were looking for.

Good day out- small bus 8 passengers so could spread out.
Would have like to have spent more time in Sheffield and leave out cheese factory.
Suggest make the day start earlier and end later so more time could spent in Sheffield and maybe go to see the tassie devils and the wild life park. This would be feasible if the return time extended to 7:00pm and leave out the cheese factory.
Cradle mountain was beautiful wildlife fantastic and walks great. Some stairs to navigate, although someone who was not able to navigate steps could still enjoy this trip. Without impacting on the group but still able to enjoy the scenery.
Commentary was excellent from Danielle who was on her second solo trip. She was very accommodating of people’s needs and answered questions. Made it easy for the group to interact with each other.
Thanks Danielle.

Agree that it might end up being a difficult day for you. Longish bus trip, quite a bit of walking and in and out of bus. Not pram friendly off the roads as it is a national park. Long day for a little one.
