- barbarahDenver0 contributionsOne of the best experiences! From the boat ride across the lake, to the fun bus drivers, to the incredible Doubtful Sound boat cruise, it was an incredible experience. Scenery, Laura’s narration, stopping the boat and turning it off to hear nature - all unforgettable!Written 20 March 2025
- Rachel W0 contributionsSuch a golden dayWe hit the lottery and had a beautiful blue bird day. Skies were blue and waters were calm. Everything about the day was well organized. Our boat even rescued someone in Doubtful Sound! We saw fur seals, an albatross and bottle nose dolphins. Overall a pretty wonderful day! Thanks to all the crew members. We learned a lot. Very informative.Written 19 March 2025
- jonathancG3822DY0 contributionsTotally worth the time and money😎Amazing views Good and knowledgable commentary. When they shut the engines down for 5 minutes was an awesome experience👍🏻Written 17 March 2025
- webcam130 contributionsOn a Rainy Day…We experienced the Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise on a rainy gray day with no chance to reschedule due to our itinerary. While this adventure was good and the RealNZ team did a fabulous job, the sun would have made this tour “spectacular”!!! Yes, there are hundreds of waterfalls due to the rain, but we’d seen a lot of waterfalls in a lifetime so we found this 7 hour excursion (not counting the travel time/queue time we had to be there) a very expensive “gray” experience. That being said, still recommended but sure hope you are “weather-lucky”.Written 17 March 2025
- 477jeffreyy0 contributionsDoubtful Sound v Milford SoundDoubtful Sound was gorgeous. We had done an overnight in Milford Sound several days earlier. Both are worth doing, but if you can only do one, I'd go with Milford Sound, especially if you can do it overnight when it is less crowded than during the day.Written 17 March 2025

It was beautiful and relaxing to be on the water surrounded by breathtaking scenery . Options for lunch and spending time on one of the islands was a highlight. Though we did not see a lot of Birdlife, the setting was idyllicWritten 11 March 2025
- chriswM9078QW0 contributionsDoubtful Sound Tour from ManapouriExpensive but a good 7-hour trip. Great to experience a remote part of NZ. Well-run and efficient. Good commentaries. Of course, awesome Doubtful Sound; you get a really good view of it. Would've liked more time and info about the Manapouri hydro-electric powerstation.Written 8 March 2025
- vanessas3570 contributionsA great experienceThis is a very nice tour to do. The boat trip across the lake was very good and the bus ride over the mountain pass was nice. The highlight is the boat trip in Doubtful Sound which is beautiful. It is wider than Milford Sound so the scale is difficult to appreciate as you are not so close to the mountains, but it is very peaceful and quiet as there are not all the boats and helicopters etc. that there are in Milford Sound. We saw fur seals basking on the rocks at the mouth of the Sound and the best part was when the engines were turned off and we got to listen to the silence out on the water, broken only by the sound of a waterfall and birdsong. A great experience.Written 3 March 2025
- NS19610 contributionsA memorable day outExcellent day out Free parking near the departure centre in Manapouri - although pretty busy. WiFi available prior to boarding. There were quite a lot of people on our tour (three full coaches) but the boat that carried us across the lake and the second boat that took us out on Doubtful Sound didn't seem at all crowded. Very modern and well equipped vessels. Excellent commentary on both the lake crossing and the tour of the Sound (the latter obviously more comprehensive). Amusing commentary from our coach driver on the trip over the Wilmott Pass to the sound. A little bit of time to check out the information in the visitor centre prior to the coach ride. The boat trip up the Sound was fantastic. The three hour trip didn't feel rushed and we felt there was nothing more we could expect from the experience. Comfortable indoor seats and tables at which to eat the lunch we'd brought. We spent most of the trip outside, as the weather was great, although the wind at the prow at times meant it was more comfortable to stand at the side rail further back I expected the vessel to seem crowded, with three coachloads onboard, but it really didn't. All of the staff and crew we encountered were great. A truly memorable trip - helped by lovely weather.Written 2 March 2025
- ushy0 contributionsFabulous day cruise on doubtful soundOur trip to Doubtful Sound with Real NZ was a long day. We drove to and from Queenstown to take the 7 hour tour. Would recommend staying at least 1 Night close by to make the day easier. The tour itself was fantastic. Starting off with a ferry ride across a lake , a bus ride through Wilmot Pass, which was pretty hair raising but spectacular followed by a cruise up Doubtful Sound to the Tasman sea and return. The scenery was beautiful and we were so Lucky to have a sunny day to take this trip. A real bonus was to spend 5 minutes on the ferry with motors cut, silence from all the guests and total wilderness silence. Really glad we made the decision to do this rather than Milford Sound. Not cheap but worth itWritten 20 February 2025
- 7930980 contributionsVery disappointing experience with Real NZWe did this trip with Real NZ on the 7th February. Three days before we were advised it was being re-booked as an 'inner fjord' cruise, rather than the 'wilderness cruise' we had very expensively booked and paid for, due to 'essential maintenance'. Seeing that the total time for the trip had reduced by 45 minutes, I responded by email via. Get your guide (who we had booked through) to ask how our experience would be affected by the change and if we had an option to cancel and receive a part refund. On not receiving a reply we did the trip and were left very underwhelmed and disappointed. A 2 hour cruise instead of 3, poor unenthusiastic commentary by the guide, and not even a mention of the wildlife which can be seen. I suspect this was because we did not travel far enough into the sound to have even the remotest possibility of seeing any. When one of the published key highlights is that you may see dolphins, seals and penguins this left a very sour taste in the mouth. It was clear it was an inferior experience but we were not offered any sort of apology of part refund by Real NZ. For what is a very expensive experience, I'd therefore recommend booking with alternative providers to avoid the risk of this happening to you.Written 16 February 2025

- 523kerryd0 contributionsA trip to rememberWhat a lovely trip from Te Anau to Manapouri by coach - very informative & friendly driver. Then onto a boat to trip across Lake Manapouri - despite the drizzly weather it was still ok to stand outside to appreciate the smell of earth and air and water. Onto another coach to take us to the sound. I am not a good coach traveler but the driver was great and again very informative stopping at special viewing spots - including the moss covered trees so Lord of the Rings. The cruise itself was beautiful - the captain and assistant gave us again great information - a little hard to hear at times as the boat PA system wasn’t the best. If you go get ready at the end of the outward bound leg to take photos at the bow as there will be seals at the rocks. On the way back the Captain cruised us into a cove and asked for silence for 5 minutes so we could appreciate the silence of this quiet nature space fully. I restrained myself from throwing some people off the boat at this point as they couldn’t stop talking & walking around - sigh !Written 8 February 2025
- carolcF5969BN0 contributionsVery disappointedWe booked our trip months ago only to have it canceled 2 days before departure when it was too late to rebook with another tour company. After a fun drive to Te Anau from Queenstown, we were welcomed onto the new catamaran by Chris (captain) and Warren (first mate). Warren provided useful and interesting commentary on the ride and once at the cave, the professional cave team took over and ensured our safety and enjoyment. The water was flowing wildly and the glow worms looked like stars in the sky. After the cave we had refreshments and Toby gave a very interesting video presentation on the life cycle of a glow worm. On the ride back everyone was happy and relaxed. It's a truly great value-for-money experience that I would recommend to everyone as long as you can bend a little as the entrance to the cave is low. Enjoy.

We would highly recommend visiting this site. It was an extremely well organized adventure. A short boat ride across Lake Te Anao brought us to the cave site.
A short briefing was done by staff member Mereana, and she also served as the guide for our group of 12 people touring the caves together. I would rate Mereana a 10/10!!! She did an outstanding job explaining everything and keeping our group of 12 people moving appropriately. A couple of the group members were a bit rude and seemed to want to talk in Japanese while Mereana was attempting to conduct her tour. She handled this situation with ease and grace.
The glow worms were both fascinating and beautiful. New Zealand is the only place in the world that you can see this spectacular display of nature in action! Go check it out!

Great little trip which included a boat ride across the Lake to the caves, a small ‘nature walk’, an informative & light hearted presentation about the glow worms and then into the caves themselves. The glow worms were fantastic! Exactly like you see on the advertising photos (please note you’re not allowed to take photos yourself in the caves). I personally felt we could have spent a little longer in the caves, I would guess we were in them for 15-20mins tops, Which is a tad short for the main attraction. Our cave guide was great, really explained things well, however the girl giving the commentary on the boat could have been a bit more enthusiastic. Overall, a very good tour.

An interesting trip. The boat ride across to the caves was nice and there was some commentary about the geology of the region. It was rather difficult to hear what the guide was saying when we were inside the caves due to the noise of the river running underneath the walkway. However, there were lots of glow worms to see especially on the ride on the punt deeper inside the caves. The talk afterwards about the glow worms and their life cycle was informative and delivered in an engaging way.
We're glad we did this trip and I would recommend it to others. We went in late summer (February) which is when a lot of glow worms would be expected but if you want to go in winter it would be worth checking beforehand whether there are any to be seen to avoid disappointment.

The glow worm caves were amazing. During our boat ride to the caves our tour guide provided interesting facts about Lake Te Anau. We entered the caves in small groups with a tour guide providing details on the caves themselves and the glow worms. The highlight being the barge ride in the dark to view the little glow worms.

You are taken from Te Anau across the lake by boat to where the caves are located on the far shore. First you get a briefing, then split into small groups to follow your guide through the paths and into the caves themselves. There are NO photos allowed. The place is VERY wet, cold, dark and noisy. Water rushes underneath you in torrents as you walk along static suspended steel walkways. At times it's no talking & lights out, so as not to disturb the creatures. A good long way into the cave you get into a boat and are paddled around a pitch-black grotto. It's quite spooky & disorienting. Then you make your way back out, blinking into the light. Then you get the boat back to Te Anau. If you like being comfortable or if you have difficulty walking & bending, or if you are at all claustrophobic, I'd strongly advise you not to do this trip. Oh - but the glow-worms are quite cute.

Lovely cruise along the lake in a modern catamaran boat. Commentary good and staff greated us on landing. The group split into multiple 12 people where you went under ground. Need to bend to 4ft for a short distance, walked on well made metal pathway before entering the small boat. Excellent experience of the caves.
The checking was disorganised long queue and said board at 4.20, we waited 20 mins in the sun before boarding. Need to inform customers'and be better organised before boarding.
Overall, an excellent tour, shame about the initial contact.

Great experience- went with 2 teenagers they loved it - lots to see, great tour guide and loved that the groups into the cave weren't too large. It was a little cold on the afternoon we went but the boat was warm inside. Recommend if travelling to Milford Sound otherwise a little far out from Queenstown.

Delighted to hear you had a great experience on the glowworm caves tour! We're glad the teenagers enjoyed it, and you appreciated the small group size. It's wonderful that even on a chilly afternoon, the warmth inside the boat made the trip comfortable. We hope to welcome you back for more adventures when you're in the area!

Lake Te Anau boat ride was a highlight even before we got to the glow worm caves. The guide I had was really enthusiastic and delivered his knowledge well. The glow worm caves themselves were just amazing. I have lived in New Zealand for 18 years and seen glow worms in various places but not like this....

The trip across to the caves was beautiful. We had a lovely clear day. Arrived at the caves and had a short walk to a conference area where you can have some tea and coffee.
If you can, I would recommend not going on the first boat, as we had a talk from one of the guides explaining what we would see and why they are there, so it made the boat trip really special.
Whilst waiting to go into the caves, if you are sensitive to sandflys, come prepared. We were fine and we were wearing long sleeved tops and long pants.
The walk through to the boat was informative.
Once on the boat, it was an enjoyable experience. I wouldn't recommend taking young children particularly if they are afraid of the dark as it is pitch black in the caves.
Overall I would highly recommend this trip.

Our family of 4 will be in the area on Sunday Dec 29, 2024 and would like to do this tour, but the system doesn’t look like there’s any availability on that day? How can I find out if it’s open then, and make a reservation for that date?

No crawling though , and the bending is more like bending your knees down to go under but the boat is low to get into

I would not recommend it. There are times when it is pitch black and many people on my tour "bumped" their heads a couple times. A reasonable person might suggest that the cave conditions might frighten a child and the risk of injury is not worth it.
Written 16 July 2019
Do you feel claustrophobic in the cave?
Written 30 April 2019
You may feel claustrophobic when you get in the small boat (our group was a tight fit), and it’s pitch black (disorienting).
Written 30 April 2019
What is this trip like if you are a couple with a one year old? Thanks!
Written 25 April 2019
I personally wouldn't take a one year old. You have to scramble through quite narrow passages to get to the boat which takes you through the caves. Also it is pitch dark and quite scary on the boat so not ideal for a baby. One option would be to all of you go over in the big boat to the visitor centre at the caves but then take turns to actually go on the tour of the caves. They divide you into groups as only one party can enter the caves at a time. From my recollection the actual tour is only 20 to 30 mins and the visitor centre is quite comfortable to wait a while. I'm sure the staff could accommodate that request. It's certainly worth a visit so good luck!
