- 380harroh0 contributionsThe best tour guide for Milford sound departing from QueenstownThe scenery was awesome. We had Nev as our driver and tour guide. He’s knowledge of the surrounding landscape from Queenstown to the sound would have to be second to none. for 13 hour round-trip. Not only did he display exemplary driving he also kept us entertained with his quick wit And extensive knowledge of The lands history. If you’re going to do this trip, then you want Nev as your driver.Written 3 November 2024
- Y9615QCjustino0 contributionsGreat personalized Milford Sound Tour Experience!Really appreciated having Tommy as our guide on the amazing Milford Sound experience. He was very communicate while sharing personal stories of his connection the area and a lot of interesting facts. I particularly appreciated the ability to make several stops along the Milford Road such as discovering the Kea birds and the various otherworldly viewpoints and points of interest. Appreciated also the small group vibe of the experience as it felt very personalized and Tommy without hesitation was ready to take photos for our large family group at the various spots and we were able to make more stops than the larger buses due to the smaller size of the group. The Milford Sound cruise itself was great in providing ample space to see the amazing landscapes, foliage and formations! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS EXPERIENCE!Written 3 November 2024
- AndreasKanellopoulos0 contributionsSuch a magical tour!Amazing road trip to Milford Sound! Our guide Ash was super friendly and cheerful! Our boat tour was great and relaxing and we saw plenty. A definite must for those visiting NZ. Thanks and very much worth the $$.Written 30 October 2024
- tradexfastu0 contributionsA lot was covered in the 12 hours of the tour, which was completed quite well.We thought about driving our own car to Milford Sound, but I'm so happy we didn't. It would have been difficult to squeeze the three-hour travel one way into a single day given the type of stops we would have had to make. I also have no issues with the car itself. There is a small brunch stop on route up.Written 30 October 2024

- jonio8500 contributionsMilford Sounds MagnificentWhat an amazing day! Our day started early and it was cold but our pick up went smoothly and the views in the early morning were beautiful. The ride up to Milford Sound was comfortable and we were glad to have a guide that gave us information about the towns, mountains, animals and trees we were passing. The bus itself only had 14 of us. The seats could recline if you needed a nap on the ride. The glass top van was a nice added touch for sure. We stopped at some very scenic spots for photos and had other stops for food and potty breaks. Our guide, Graem, gave really good recommendations. We loved the pies he suggested at one of the stops. He had a wealth of knowledge about the area and NZ too. He welcomed all my questions! Milford Sound is a must see spot. If you are choosing what excursion to do while in Queenstown, this should be your first choice. We loved it so much, we didn’t want to leave. It’s like nothing else. It’s a magnificent creation worth the time and expense. Don’t miss it!Written 28 October 2024
- R9330JFchristineb0 contributionsHighly recommendedShelly was our guide. She's very knowledgeable of the history of the places we went to as well as the areas we passed by. Me and my family really enjoyed the stunning views coupled with the interesting info shared. The stop overs were aptly timed and the coach is really comfortable.Written 27 October 2024
- Scenic214095737120 contributionsGreat day trip with a fantastic knowledgeable guideThis tour is an absolute must! The day started flawlessly, with Tommy meeting us exceptionally promptly at our hotel and we made our way to Milford Sound in the early hours of the morning, but it was worth every single second! Tommy was exceptional; giving us history of places en route, accommodating for us to hop off and take photos, explaining the wildlife and enabling moments for us to take photos, took photos of us and so much more. A special mention for Tommy; he went the extra mile and provided us with suggestions for our future travels around the South Island- many of which we cannot wait to do! He listened and adapted to the needs of the group, and this was noted and appreciated! Thank you Tommy for such a memorable day and thank you Altitude Tours for facilitating such a gorgeous tour to Milford Sound! The food was great, a modern, clean and comfortable with adequate number of stops along the way for stretching your legs, food and use of the bathroom.Written 24 October 2024

He kept us entertained throughout the journey with some local tidbits about the local birds and plants. From the picking up (that was at 730) we were 5 minutes on time and the driver was rushing up but after that the service was good. When we arrived to the ship the food quantity was very poor (not enough for all the people there) the tour supposed to include coffee but there was no coffee and when we asked the staff they just said “there’s no coffee and there was more people asking for it. Ultimately I wanted to buy a beer with card but since my card does not have my name printed (in Mexico some debut cards are like that) they didn’t want to sell me anything because of that. But the views and all the Milford sound landscape is terrific!!

New Zealand scenery is amazing and photos do not do it justice. But the tour guide is critical to understanding the beauty that surrounds you. Our guide, Chelsea, was wearing at least two hats and excelled at each role. Driver, very safe on these narrow and winding roads. Naturalist, very knowledgeable from her many years guiding along most of the famous tracks, and providing her delightful commentary. Entertainer, from her delightful manner of introducing all manner of things New Zealand, from history, culture, flora, fauna, food, and other tidbits that helped us appreciate this wonderful world of the South Island. The drive from Queenstown was gorgeous, and I recommend this part of the tour rather than just flying in and flying out. Many stops along the way for comfort, food, and drink, but also vista points that were not just beautiful, but chosen by Chelsea from her experience to be away from the frequent large bus tours that also follow this route. The small tour format is worth every penny, since a small group can visit many stops in much less time. It only takes one trip on a big bus to realize how long it takes to load and unload. Time is valuable on these once in a lifetime adventures. The weather was quite variable on our chosen day of this adventure. Sunny in Queenstown, clouds forming as we approached Milford Sound. We boarded the boat, and the clouds finally lifted, allowing us clear views of the fjord and its mountains and waterfalls, cloaked in rising cloud cover and misty fog. We were extremely lucky that the weather improved to allow us to fly back to Queenstown for the amazing aerial views. But if the weather did not cooperate, the ride back would have been enjoyed, as the landscape and flora is quite stunning.

We had a great day out with Altitude Tours visiting Milford Sound. Our driver Shelley was both entertaining and very interesting, recounting her family history and involvement in the building of the road out to the sound. We didn’t really notice the time passing on the four hour drive out as she kept everyone engaged and various stops for coffee and photos broke up the journey. The boat trip was as spectacular as the drive with great scenery and even views of seals and dolphins during the voyage. As the weather was so clear we opted to take seats on the flight back, expensive but a great experience and we enjoyed the flight and the views over the sound and the mountains…….it was also a lot quicker - We were having a beer later in the evening and saw busses just arriving back! We found Altitude a very organised and professional company and would be happy to travel with them again.

We travelled by Mercedes small no of passengers 7 of us including our 5-yr old
Chloe who was entertained all the way there and back, she had her iPad and
helped to fill the gaps ..
Roland our Driver informed me that he had done the trip 3,000 times, it was a
great experience being in his excellent hands @ the wheel, he was very informative
as he had grown up in the area and passed on his experiences and good
judgement of the long road we travelled.
It was great to arrive @ our several stopovers knowing Roland was always there
to herd us back on board and make sure everyone was accounted for.
The trip was made more exciting when we were all dropped off @ the boat
very seaworthy and well equipped to make the journey on the sea to view
the Fjords; Seals and birdlife, we motored pretty fast and everyone enjoyed
the massive waterfalls into the Ocean not far from the boat. Tea and Coffee
were provided, there was always someone to check on Chole, who was very
excited by the whole adventure.
We arrived home safely with Roland not nodding off he was courteous helpful
and amazing, we all felt safe even though the weather took a turn but he
managed to get us into a fairly comfortable state after the rain stopped and
the roads were back to normal ...

This tour was fabulous and I thoroughly recommend it. Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenage boys) had a great time. The bus was comfortable and our guide Andy kept us entertained with information and stories along the way. The choice of the small group tour worked well - we travelled comfortably, but could readily stop at various places along the way that were not always suited to large coaches. The boat we were booked on was also not overcrowded, meaning we got a plentiful and comfortable lunch as well as wonderful views and ready access to all parts of the boat. Even though it was a long trip back, we arrived back in Queenstown feeling really happy with the day we’d had.

The small group travel in up market vehicles was great value. Shaun is a knowledgeable and affable tour guide. Although a long day, visiting the Milford Sound is spectacular with many sensational sights on the way. We opted to bus back rather than fly or by helicopter.

Absolutely incredible experience - our driver Andy was so nice and knowledgeable and made the bus drive really enjoyable. The bus itself was really comfortable and having the wifi and USB ports was a huge plus. The stops along the way were all beautiful and made the time fly by quickly. The cruise was spectacular - some of the scenery honestly didn’t feel real. I did the scenic flight back and the panoramic views absolutely blew me away. Overall, an absolute must do experience when on the South Island.

We are so glad we took our Milford Sound excursion with Altitude Tours. Our guide Ashley was a pleasure. She entertained us during the long drive, giving us a wealth of information and answering all our questions about New Zealand. She reassured us that we would love Milford Sound in the rain. And she was right! Milford Sound was magical, with an incredible number of amazing waterfalls, thanks to the rain.
Our fly back was cancelled due to the rain. Altitude Tours promptly refunded us. They responded to all my inquiries before and after the excursion. I highly recommend them.

Rich, the crazy English rambling bloke, is FANTASTIC!!! Seriously Rich, thank you so much for making 8hrs+ of riding time disappear in the blink of an eye. I know you say you have only been leading tours for 2 months but you fooled us. Your knowledge of the area, puns and dad jokes made for an unforgettable day and I cannot imagine seeing the Milford Sounds without you! Cheers mate! Keep up the great work!
Oh and the tour is great as well. Quality communication, small coach bus transportation (not the massive coach buses with a million people on em) and lunch. Would 1000% recommend to anyone and we will be back hopefully sooner rather than later!

What a great day! The scenery was incredible on the drive to Milford sound. We had many photo opportunities stops along the way. Our driver Sinchan was so entertaining and knowledgeable so even this long drive was enjoyable. The cruise was very nice especially since it was a smaller boat. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great so we couldn’t fly back. This made for a very long day, but still very worth it. Our money for the difference between the return flight and the bus back was quick refunded. I highly recommend this small group tour with our amazing tour guide.

If both land and land/flight tour are both 13 hours what is the advantage of flying back to Queenstown. Flying should shorten duration of tour???
Written 11 December 2019
What time does the tour leave? and why is it longer than other fly back tours?
