About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- jodimQ9851QC0 contributionsFull day wine ebike tour is a MUSTSpectacular views and ride - a highlight of our trip. Favorite of many bike rides. If you know how to navigate a bike (shifting gears frequently up and down hills while adjusting ebike speed), it's super fun. While i won't ding for one or two people's unfriendly demeanor in the office, it's disappointing when we've done so many tours and everywhere else and staff has been full of fun and energy from the start. These people are in the wrong jobs, and they likely know it as they're not happy. One lady with long hair and pretty bright eyes was super friendly. And yes, a bathroom at the office would be nice. Others say the same.Written 13 February 2025
- 181suzym0 contributionsGreat family trip and really helpful and sensible teamWe had intended to do the full 32km ride but were gently encouraged at check-in to consider one of the shorter less challenging rides. Our son hadn't ridden for a while and as soon as he got on the bike we realised the longer ride would not be possible. The team were super flexible and gave us options and advice. We opted for the shorter route and they picked us up at the agreed spot. My only quibble was that the gears on the bike my son had were too stuff for him to turn them down (he's 6 years old). So we had to stop every time there was a hill and mostly had to walk up the hills, which made for a much longer ride than we'd planned! All in all a good day though.Written 12 February 2025
- Robert L0 contributionsThe Arrowtown to Queenstown bike track is a must do, the scenery changes are amazing! The ride from Arrowtown to Queenstown was amazing, it is a must do. The scenery is ever changing and the ride at points can be a little challenging especially navigating the very high suspension bridges. We stopped for a swim, watched bungee jumping and we all said on future holidays we should investigate bike rides in these locations (def e-bikes). My 4 not 5 star review is the customer experience ad some of the interactions with shop staff was less than impressive. When we arrived and checked in I was glad we got checked in with the staff member I did, I watched and listened to the other staff member who was borderline rude to the guests she was supposed to be serving. We then were collected by the bus driver who was very pleasant and then final before the ride the gentleman who did our safety presentation was excellent, great presenter. We then went off on our ride as we tried to conquer the harder hills (thank god e had the e-bikes) my daughter and I could see my wife struggling a bit. We discussed what gears we used and speed of e-bike with her and off we went again. She was still struggling but we just thought it was user error. About 2/3 of the way my wife & I exchanged bikes and immediately I could see it was not user error but a faulty bike with there seeming to be an issue with the chin/gears. I road the bike with issue most of the way back to Queenstown as my wife was definitely more exhausted then my daughter and myself who had a great experience on our original bikes. On getting back to the office unfortunately we were greeted by the staff member I had seen provide poor service in the morning, on advising her we had issues with the chain, she was completely uninterested and dismissive and changed the subject to focusing on us returning our helmets to the rack. So as I said the ride is a must but the customer experience is a bit 50/50!Written 3 February 2025
- Adam D0 contributionsGreat way to exploreHired e bikes as a family of four to do the Arrowtown to Arthurs Point ride. Driven to Arrowtown where we were given our bikes and clear directions. Had plenty of time to explore Arrowtown before setting off. E bikes meant we all stayed together regardless of riding ability. It also meant we got to our pick up way in advance so decided to extend our cycle back into Queenstown. Great day out on the trails!Written 16 January 2025
- Departure5383690 contributionsFriendly mini bus Transfers from Queenstown to winery area; visited 4 wineries for tastings/food, whilst riding e-bikes!Loved the whole experience! Very well organised so the transfers went smoothly and the ride was fairly flat so we could have been on any type of bike. Wineries were lovely - surroundings, food and wine were all very much enjoyed!Written 15 December 2024
- 512sharleanm0 contributionsExcellent day out e-biking the region!Am amazing day! It has been a highlight of our trip! The views were spectacular from the start to the finish! From the booking to the check in process, to being dropped off to our pick up! The bikes were excellent and the winery recommendations were awesome! Would highly recommend this to everyone!Written 4 December 2024
- andrewjB7616UL0 contributionsFun day outWe hired the e-bikes which made the ride very easy. Very picturesque trails. Plenty of spots to stop and take photos. Sampled some great wine and food along the way. We did the full day tour which gave us plenty of time to relax at each winery.Written 4 December 2024
- I9246KYdonnak0 contributionsDelish wine and bike tour around QueenstownThis was SO fun. We loved the adventuring of the cycle and then the R&R of the wine, food, cheese and laughs at the wineries. We ended the day with a lot of wine bottles clinking our bags that we purchased. I'd highly recommend this but also recommend - lots of water, sunscreen and deep pockets for buying all the delish food, it's not expensive but all so good so you don't want to miss out on any.Written 1 December 2024
- bonniew610 contributionsSee something outside the cityTrying an ebike was a novel experience but so much fun. The scenery is spectacular. The crew are helpful fitting you to the right bike. The trail is very manageable even for us novice riders and challenging for more experienced who choose to ride over the hanging bridges. We stopped along the way to watch the bungy jumpers (that is something a much younger and wilder person might enjoy). The cafe at the end of the route was great even for us who don’t drink wine. The chocolate gelato will not be forgotten.Written 28 November 2024
- Lee C0 contributionsA rewarding experienceWe were able to move our reservation up a day due to predicted rain. The e-bike upgrade was very reasonable also and we were able to make the 60k loop to Arrowtown and back during the day ride. Manager of shop was very pleasant and accommodating before and after our ride. Strongly recommend.Written 25 November 2024
- Queen_Of_Hearts250 contributionsInjured person left strandedWe did a bike tour with this company. Things started out fine but during the trail the bike chain came off one bike. We were mid way through the trail and this ate up a chunk of riding time as we waited while another helpful cyclist helped us fix the bike. We got back on the trail and toward the end one of our party fell off the bike and was injured. We arrived at the pick up point and tended to the injury knowing the driver would be arriving soon. We waited and waited but the driver never arrived. We noticed the bikes had been picked up and they had left us stranded 25 kilometers away from any help. We called the company and told them what had happened and that someone was injured but staff were unhelpful and kept saying we didn’t meet the driver at the pick up point and would need to take a taxi instead. Not one staff member asked if the injured person was okay or what they could do to help. When we said they had our number, they could have called us to check if we were okay when they picked up our bikes, they had no answer to this . Staff were only interested in arguing and patronizing us rather than trying to find a solution. We asked that a manager call us but we have not received one call from them. Not even to say ‘sorry to hear you were injured - how are you doing?’ Absolutely shocking service!!! This company has a duty of care to the people using their services and they failed to meet this duty of care. People in our group had used this business before at least 4 times and mentioned they normally come in to the winery to check that every passenger in on board before they leave however they did not check if we were there or not. Reading the other negative reviews I can see we are not the only ones that have been left stranded. They are only interested is getting money from you that’s it. I am going to report them to WorkSafe for their absolute lack of care to the health and safety of their customers. If you use the company make sure you do so knowing they will leave you stranded in the middle of no where - no matter if you’re a child, the elderly or injured.Written 24 November 2024
- chempy0 contributionsPlenty to see along the way!Our original tour happened on a super rainy day, and we decided to postpone it at the very very last minute after spending 5 mins in Arrowtown, as the rain was not stopping…. The driver was kind enough to come back to pick us and send us back to Queenstown which was much appreciated! Our tour was postponed to another day and we truly enjoyed the experience, together with my teenager kids! Great trail and plenty to see along the way in a great weather!Written 23 November 2024
- C7586VHdonaldp0 contributions10 out 10 experience.Big shout out to our Welsh bike guide (very friendly and knowledgeable) who took us out to our pick up point on Nov 7. We did 3/4 day electric bike tour and my wife and I had an awesome day with the sun shining and fantastic vineyards tasting.Written 7 November 2024
- Stay270117517050 contributionsBike...Wine...Bike...Wine......Beautiful scenery along the river biking to the many wineries. We chose to use mountain bikes instead of e-bikes and it was very doable. There were a few steep hills but manageable. We enjoyed all the wineries and had snacks at each place. Especially enjoyed the creamy mushroom & thyme soup at The Church! Our guides that got us to Arrowtown and back were great!!Written 2 November 2024
- Ezra M0 contributionsQueenstown wineries on e-bike. Exciting, enjoyable, beautiful scenery, but WATCH OUT for the edges of the cycle path!Around the basin e-bike Queenstown half day winery trip Overall I felt the experience on this outing was Excellent, Enjoyable, exhilarating, and set in Beautiful scenery. We were fortunate to have good weather which was a big plus. There were a Variety of wineries to visit, including Brennans ( located about 1km or 2 beyond The Church, which was the pick up point at the end of this outing) and the Gibbston winery. I’d recommend both for pleasant wines and staff. The Bikes were in good condition except for one minor issue. My report on this issue was received with gratitude and an assurance that it would be looked at. A further important note about the bikes. There are a Variety of saddle types on the bikes, from the very thin bone hard type like on a regular road/racing bike, to wide well padded saddles and a range in between. Check that the saddle on your bike is ok for you before you depart and request a modification or alternative if necessary or desired. There was one small landslide partially blocking route, after wet weather in the previous few days. This was passable on foot and carrying or pushing one’s bike. It was in the process of being cleared when we passed. Three of the four of us really enjoyed the whole outing. One found the outing fairly scarey in terms of the proximity of the cycle path edge to a very high and steep valley side with falls a long way down to the river or valley floor very easy to imagine. In some places there was a fence at the side of the path, offering protection against a fall. However in most places where the falls are highest there is no edge protection. This is by far the biggest and most significant negative about this trip. While this issue didn’t impact on my enjoyment of the trip during the outing itself, I feel the fear is entirely justified. In places the path is a little narrow, and the edge is unprotected in these places. The height is very substantial. At bends, if you were travelling at speed (easy to imagine) the surface might not have the stability or grip to keep you on the path. I suggest that the path, in the interests of the safety of cyclists and any other users would benefit substantially from fencing along these edges to reduce the risk cyclists falling off the edge of the path. I don’t know if anyone has fallen off the paths here, and I hope no one has, of course. However it is not a stretch of the imagination to see it happening in my opinion, and I hope the issue is addressed, so as to make this ride safer, and keep the ride open for people to enjoy. I think this last point, making it safer and keeping it open is very important. This type of outdoor activity is very much part of the good side of things in being in NZ, a like me, visiting NZ on holiday.Written 30 October 2024

Sharing details I couldn’t find in advance…The 21-mile route that starts in Arrowtown follows the Arrow River Bridges trail, then turns onto the Twin Rivers Trail, and finally the Frankton track by waterfront near the airport, on down to downtown. There were 2-3 short segments on country lanes used by cars, but I never encountered a car. No restrooms at check-in shop in CBD, and in Arrowtown you have to go away from the trail entrance a bit to find the public toilets. The quality of the trail is pretty much as advertised, almost all groomed gravel. There are many hairpin turns to watch out for. I went on a sunny day, but wish I had brought sunglasses that transmitted more light, as you’re often in the shade while you’re navigating turns and such. My e-bike was a light duty mountain bike with front suspension only and a slightly cushy seat. The power was good - 3 levels - I used level 1 almost all the way, and level 2 only for a few of the steep hills. I am not a super-serious biker and almost always ride on roads - but I was able to do this trail in 1.5 hours (plus one brief water break stop). This trail requires enough attention that you aren’t seeing the scenery very much - so I could see dedicating more time to the ride if you want to stop more often and take in the scenery. The whole thing is a great value for the money. It’s a great ride - enjoy!

We all had a great day of riding! We were driven from Queenstown to Arrowtown where we collected our E-bikes and received all the information we needed for our trip back to Queenstown. Most of our group had never biked this far/long before so were apprehensive before we started, but that quickly changed as we made our way through the fantastic scenery! The trail is clearly signposted so no chance of getting lost and staff beforehand were very informative as well!
This first ride has given me inspiration to do more cycling in New Zealand if/when I get the opportunity!!
Definitely recommend Around the Basin!!

It was well organised and the shuttle got us to Arrowtown. The E-bike choice was very good for us on the day as there are short sharp hills and very edgy corners; its advisable to have mtn bke experience to do this ride. We ride regularly usually on gravel bikes and found it challenging at times. The Tucker beach extension was not very well signaged if you take it and beware as they are spraying rabbit poison all along the track which you are not forewarned about either. I would not take this choice again and believe we should have been forewarned. the Kelvin peninsula extra kms option also is narrow path used for walkers and loose dogs as well as cyclists. Some parts have large exposed rocks which you either dodge or ride over leaving only about 12 inches on the side of the path tipping to waters edge. In our experience you really need mtn biking exp to take this path as well. you really need most of the day to do it if you want to stop and take photos and have lunch somewhere too. Overall a great day but our advice is take the e-bike choice and have a little experience navigating corners and wear appropriate biking shorts as you will need them.

We had a great day - really well organised, staff were really friendly and the information/map provided regarding the route were great. The scenery is spectacular! The bikes were really good - I went for an electric bike and my partner a non electric and both were brilliant (although I think he regretted not picking an electric bike by the end!)

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed this day trip and thought it was an amazing way to see the area that you may not otherwise get to see by vehicle. As this was a self guided tour, we were able to take our time and stop as many times as need for photo/toilet/lunch breaks. The route was very well marked and we opted for the e-bikes in case we needed a little boost through the day-long ride (very handy for up-hill). I would say that there are a few turns and slopes that you need to be careful on so basic bike riding skills is key and also just common sense.

Was taken to Arrowtown by shuttle and had all day to cycle back to Queenstown, adding excursions to vineyards and Lake Hayes. I hired an electric bike which was a delight and made the ride pure enjoyment. Scenery absolutely stunning. I compared several bike hire companies and these guys were definitely the most informative, accommodating and best value.

A great experience from start to finish. You’re driven to Arrowtown and briefed. The briefing was clear with some humour thrown in to engage and make the messages stick. The bikes were good and the scenery absolutely beautiful. If you’re not used to undulating cycling rent an e-bike ( most people do).

Wow! These guys have got a reputation for being the best in the business and its clear from our experience today why that is. Super efficient, super friendly and helpful, plus great bikes (we hired ebikes).
We haven't mentioned the cycling experience yet..! Outstanding, exhilarating, beautiful, great fun, well maintained tracks, NZ at its best.
Must give a shout out to the various agencies and groups who have had the vision and commitment to deliver a world beating cycle experience. I understand that the project will be 500km (five hundred!) of linked cycle tracks from QT to Dunedin. Love it!
Thanks 'Around the Basin', you rock!

So awesome to read your review Nick - we are proud of our team and the lengths they go to to facilitate a great day for everyone who books our rides.
The Queenstown Trail network is incredible and world class - we are extremely fortunate to have them, we are proud to be able to operate a business on them and our team love to be able to enable people to explore them when visiting Queenstown.

I had a day to kill in Queenstown and I thought a bike ride would be ideal. The ride from Arrowtown back to Queenstown looked like just what I needed. The reception staff were most friendly and helpful. I arrived at their shop at the prescribed time. There was a group of riders and we were mini-bused to Arrowtown. People were setting off on different rides. I knew parts were hilly and I didn't want to be late getting back to Queenstown, so once I had my bike and helmet I set off on the very well marked trail. I would advise that you take one of the company supplied maps. The bike trail passes through a range of stunning scenery. On the trail I only passed a few other bikers. You could hire an electric bike but I preferred a push cycle. It is no walk in the park and there were occasions when I dismounted and pushed the bike up a few hills. The last few kilometres into Queenstown were flat and easy to cycle. When I got back to the shop I knew I had just cycled 40kms. I was a bit exhausted but felt quite contented. I would advise taking water and some food to pause, have a picnic and appreciate the beauty of this part of the world. A wonderful day and highly recommended.

This is our second time with Around the Basin.
We elected for four electric bikes, shuttle to Arrowtown and ride back.
Our bikes were all ready on arrival in the morning and we took a shuttle to Arrowtown with a very informative and entertaining driver. At Arrowtown, we were given some safety and direction instructions and sent on our merry way with maps.
We followed the suggestion of riding around Arrowtown to get some food and to warm up with some pies.
Then off down the Trail. To cut along story short, we rode the length of the Trail past Gibbston (for a yummy lunch) then back, past AJ Hackett, then to Frankton, finally to back to the shop in Queenstown.
Total over 60km and 6 hours - great day, tiring, never ran out of charge and the nikes were great.
Some annoyances - horse riders on the track (where they are not supposed to be) and family groups (who leave their bikes in the middle of the track to take some photos).
We would definitely use Around the Basin again. We possibly wouldn't go all the way down to Gibbston in a day, although it can be done (we are a fit cycling family, however).

You did a BIG ride - great effort! To get to the end of Gibbston and turn back and ride all the way back to Queenstown with lunch thrown in the midst ...well done.
We look forward to seeing you back for some more (or less) riding soon. Cheers :)
