What to expect
  • Glacier-carved Lake Wakatipu is renowned as New Zealand’s longest lake, and its depths reach 1,300 feet (400 meters). This leisurely cruise boasts dramatic views of the surrounding Remarkables mountains, which provide a constant backdrop to the sparkling blue waters. Board your catamaran at the downtown pier in Queenstown in the morning or early afternoon. Enjoy ample time on Lake Wakatipu, which you may recognize as the film set for the Lothlórien scenes in 'The Lord of the Rings' series. You may not see any Middle-earth elves here, but your captain highlights the wildlife and native flora. Peer out the large viewing windows, lounge on the outdoor decks, or join the captain in the wheelhouse to learn about atmospheric pressures that cause the lake’s water level to rise, which Maori legend says is the heartbeat of a giant who lies asleep in the lake’s depths. The vessel crosses to the western shore, stopping en route at Bob's Cove. Soak up magnificent views toward Glenorchy, Mt. Earnslaw, and the Southern Alps. You can purchase beverages and snacks at the onboard cafe before returning to the starting point in Queenstown.

Went on this cruise with hubby. The commentary was great and very informative. The cruise itself was fantastic. Queenstown is such a neat place and this cruise took us to some little nooks and crannies that we would not see had we gone by car. In the summer we even saw some snow in the hills in the distance!

Lovely cruise of the lake and the skipper gives a very informative commentary as we travelled around the lake. For value for money this is better than the Earnslaw.

However, in the interests of health and safety could the company perhaps have their staff trained to deal with foreign citizens who let their children run riot and constantly go out the door to the bow and leave the door slamming. No parental guidance from the parents at all (group of 4 young children running around in and out). Even when the young staff shut the door due to the wind this only momentarily stopped the children. Eventually on the return journey the novelty wore off with the running around and the door was left permanently open.
Also, beware that on a hot sunny day there is no shade provided on the wharf while waiting to board the catamaran.

We own an AirBnb in Queenstown and decided to try out the Big Red boat The Southern Explorer on Lake Wakatipu to see if we could recommend it to our guests. I can say we were pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it. The trip is quite a different experience than the TSS Earnslaw steam boat and even though it is on the same lake it takes in quite a different view of it. The boat itself is lovely and clean and very comfortable with huge panoramic windows. We glided across the lake even though the water was incredibly rough and I think this trip would really appeal to all age groups including older guests or anyone who gets sea sick. Can highly recommend the local cheese board a real treat along with great service really made the trip. Can I recommend this to our future Guests ! Absolutely

We had a lovely tour of the lake with two families. The customer service was excellent and the hosts really bent over backwards to make sure we had an enjoyable experience. The boat was super clean and comfortable and the wine and cheese was top notch quality and presentation. We took lots of photos as the views were sensational and enjoyed hearing about all the little coves and lakes and farm stations along the way. Thank you for a lovely experience.

3.15pm cruise "Happy hour" :). Beautiful cruise The captain is very knowledgeable, with the commentary as we travel around about the area & history of the area. Staff are average to be honest but what more can you expect from this type of cruise, they are there just to do what is required (Milford staff are exceptional). I would recommend this cruise - grab a drink, sit back and enjoy what is on offer.

This was an amazing cruise! Was a great way to spend the afternoon, with fantasy six views. The staff were all so lovely and the there was great information about the area. Would recommend this to anyone travelling to Queenstown to see the sites and learn a little bit about the area! We didn’t get the cheese platter, but they looked amazing when they came out.

We did this as a start of our Queenstown winter escape and it was great! Beautiful views and it was the 3.15pm cruise, so the change in light over the time gave us some variety. The captain is obviously very knowledgeable about the area as kept up the commentary about the areas and history, and was accommodating when a friend went to chat with him. Food and beverages available helped to improve this nice little tour.

Started off amazingly. Had pretty good weather and the views were stunning. Unfortunately when we crossed the lake to pick up people from the farm station things got a bit rocky. We all had to come down to the inside bit because the waves were so big and the boat was getting pushed around. The staff were a little panicked as the waves got bigger, and eventually had to take away people's food and drink in case they went flying. People had to get on the floor and crawl to the back of the boat where it was more stable. The skipper was excellent and we all got back safely, and were offered a drink on the house after we got back to the smooth part. I don't think they normally go across to the station on this cruise so it shouldn't be a problem for future customers.
