- DayTrip089321077560 contributionsOver-rated but enjoyableAn enjoyable day, led by Alan, who was very knowledgeable and entertaining. But I did not appreciate until too late that the price was quoted in US and not New Zealand dollars until after I had paid. At circa £145, I did not think the day good value. The gourmet lunch was certainly not haute cuisine.Written 17 March 2024
- A6095HDcatherines0 contributionsGreat day out!A really great day out with a lovely, friendly and knowledgeable guide. Although we visited several wineries, the day never felt rushed. Lunch at The Stoaker was delicious. Being in a small group of around 10-12 was great as everyone got to know each other a little. Highly recommended.Written 17 March 2024
- PTOwner150 contributionsGood tour if a little priceyVery nice tour. Gazza was a super guide and we tried some really nice wines. The lunch at the Stoaker Room was good but the wines were poorly presented there - we could have been drinking anything because the wine was put into glass jars without even a lip and we had to pour them ourselves. Tour was quite expensive compared to others we have been on but we still had a good time. Cheese and wine at Mount Rosa was very niceWritten 10 March 2024
- kimjK4668OO0 contributionsGreat wines and tourThis was a great little trip to experience the region and some of the delicious wines. Tour guide was great and engaged well with the whole tour group. Wineries were beautiful and I wanted to stay at each one for a few hours.Written 6 March 2024

- DogloverWisconsin0 contributionsFun wine tourScheduled this solo while having free day from my tour group. So much fun. Punctual pickup. Friendly informative guide. I met people from different countries, something I had really been missing with my tour group. Everybody had a great time. The wines were amazing, the meal provided was unusual and delicious. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys good wines and some local history.Written 2 March 2024
- larae7560 contributionsSome of the best food and wine we had on the South Island! We had such a wonderful time on this tour exploring Waiheke. The three wineries we went to allowed us to try a variety of wines from the region and plenty of their famous Pinot noirs. We enjoyed having a tour of one of the only wine caves in the region that has a very colorful history! The lunch was the cherry on top of a wonderful day and one of the best lunches we experienced on the South Island! Highly recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys Pinots and delicious food!Written 2 March 2024
- Sviatoslav B0 contributionsWine WonderlandWe hit up four wineries, sipped on some fine wines, and oh boy, did they tickle our taste buds! The tour was like a smooth pour – everything flowed seamlessly. Plus, they threw in a delicious lunch that was like a flavor explosion in our mouths. Definitely worth every penny and a must-do for anyone visiting Queenstown. Cheers to good wine and great times!Written 1 March 2024
- GMNovotelQT0 contributionsLocal Queenstowners enjoying local sitesAs a Queenstown local it is always interesting seeing local activities through the eyes of visitors. This time around we hosted a cousin from London and had a fantastic day. The variety of people on the group from USA, Australia and the UK made it a fun afternoon and our guide was informative as were the staff at the 3 wineries visited. While you could never taste all of the wines at all of the wineries there was a good variety of wines to taste and to buy if you wanted. We would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Queenstown ( or Queenstown locals) as a great way to spend an afternoon.Written 25 February 2024
- 193gilla0 contributionsThe ultimate gourmet food and wine tourOur guide Gaz, a retired airline pilot, gave us information about the four vineyards we would be visiting. Telling us about the area and pointing out places of interest on the way. The first vineyard was the oldest in the region and how the owner even dynamited his own wine cave, accompanied by three lovely wines. The next was a Rothschild’s owned vineyard and four more amazing wines; followed by lthe most amazing lunch at the next one. We had a platter of four meats; venison, beef, pork belly, lamb, and a salmon. All were smoked in old wine barrels that had been converted. Each dish came with a wine to compliment it. The food was delicious and also a lot of it. They were not mean with their portions. After lunch we went to the forth vineyard where we had a platter of New Zealand cheeses and five wines that would complement the cheese. At the end of the tour we were taken to Arrowtown. A reconstruction of the old mining town. Gaz was amazing: best wine trip we have ever done.Written 20 February 2024
- ericksos10 contributionsFantastic Private Wine TourNot sure where to start with how outstanding every aspect of this tour company is. I booked an all-day private tour with them for my wife and myself. So that is the basis for this review. I will also mention that I normally only write reviews for experiences that are either over the top good, or over the top bad. This is one of the good ones. Appellation is TOTALLY flexible, ULTRA communicative and responsive, and they will work with you beyond what would normally be expected or want to do given a squeaky wheel like myself. They let me, for the most part, not only pick the exact wineries I wanted to taste at (not all of them were available on the exact day we were doing this), but they offered expert knowledge about each one in advance, and on-going, with regards to how the wineries handle tastings, AND which ones could lean towards being a little more conducive and inclusive related to what they typically offer or involve, or vice-versa, related to the tastings at the wineries I was looking to visit. I could have pitched a tent in the back of the BMW they accommodated us for our tour. It was perfect for a long day of darting around the wineries and the countryside. Our tour Guide, Martin, was EXCELLENT. He knows his stuff with regards to the area, its history and local lore. AND, most importantly, he knows his wineries and wines (I was a serious collector for many decades, and amassed collections well over several thousand at it's peak). So we could really talk shop. There was even a winery that I had only recently become aware of, which I had become very interested in, and Martin knew SO much information on this winery. And, we managed to shoe-horn in an unscheduled stop there for an off-the-tour stop and really good tasting (which I paid for out of pocket) without jeopardizing the schedule or remaining tour stops. All thanks to Martin's execution (and relationship with people at this winery!!) Did I mention the 5-course lunch, with wine pairings, there was included as part of this tour? At the risk of causing readers of this review to start glossing out, I will end by simply stating that I assure any of you who want to get a serious exposure to the amazing, amazing Pinot Noir and other wines of the Central Otago wine growing region, please book your trip with Appellation Wine Tours. You will be glad you did.Written 15 February 2024
- 471jennye0 contributionsLovely way to spend the dayExcellent wine tour! This is a great way to spend a day in the Queenstown area. We enjoyed a beautiful day with Donna, touring 4 wineries with a nice lunch spread. Having transportation and tastings pre-arranged is worth the cost of admission alone. She also shared tons of informative facts about the region's history (both in general and specifically related to wine-making). The groups are kept small. I didn't drink on the day of the tour (my husband participated in the tastings) and was offered a variety of other choices at each stop (soft drinks, juice, coffee, etc.). Donna made sure I was always comfortable and included.Written 15 February 2024
- BrianD8320 contributionsHighly recommendedThis was a last minute booking, but it was really worth it - what a great half day excursion. The three locations were all good and the hosts all very good Our driver and guide was a guy called Murray, who was knowledgeable and witty and kept the fun atmosphere going al through the trip. Highly recommended - and drink lots of wine!!Written 9 February 2024

Booked this tour for 2 x birthdays and we were a bit underwhelmed by the tour. The tour guide was new so we gave her the benefit of the doubt however the tour it’s self was a bit over priced and uninspiring. I would recommend for future tours to create a bit more of a vibe by having some music playing when the commentator isn’t talking and to not rush from one winery to another. We appreciate the overall experience. Thanks!

Hi Kevin, thank you for your review and and we are sorry it didn't quite meet your expectations. Our aim is to provide insight into the wine and history of the region in between vineyard visits, leaving no time for music! The Guide is fairly new but I also thought she had adequate wine and local knowledge. I appreciate the feedback so that I can follow up with her and provide further training and resources where required.
We are always striving to improve our products and tours and your feedback will certainly help us with this. Thanks again and should you ever be back in the area, let us know so that we might get the opportunity to better your experience. Kind regards, Sarah

Great short day trip to some brilliant local wineries just off the beaten track out the back of Queenstown. Gary our driver, tour guide and wine aficionado couldn’t have been more perfect for this. His brilliant commentary and knowledge brought our small group (12) together and we couldn’t keep the bus chatter down as we exchanged stories from our visit and from home. Two tastings b4 Lunch at Stoakers which was unbelievable, followed by a stop at KinRoss with a tasting that inc. a more current vintage of the Pinot Noir made by Brady & Taylor that took No 1 in the world with their 2000 and a cheese board was included. Short stop at Arrowtown on way back for some famous local lollies. Do this trip & when you book ask if Gary is driving. Cheers guys. A great day out.

This wine tour was superb with a diverse range of vineyards visited and comprehensive, informative tastings were included. Our tour guide Paul was extremely knowledgeable and knew the locality/geography to explain the viticulture of the region. Thank you Carrick for a gourmet lunch and glass of your beautiful organic wine. Visiting Kinross was the highlight with multiple winemakers represented and Luli taking us through a magic journey. Mt Rosa is a must visit with fabulous wine and fruit cake for a special treat.

Having never been a fan of Pinots which are the variety of wine that Central Otago is famous, I had my reservations. But I’m a convert. We had tastings at 4 cellar doors, chosen by Paul our experienced driver. Paul’s family have a winery, and his enthusiasm about wine and the area really shone through. We never felt at all rushed, so the day was very relaxing. Lunch at the Wooing Tree vineyard was very tasty, although I would have liked more!
We had a diverse group from around the world and you could tell that Paul genuinely enjoyed sharing his knowledge of wine and the Queenstown area with us all.

My boyfriend and I went on Appellation's Wine Tour early December last year. We booked for a group tour however because of Covid's Auckland and international lockdowns Queenstown was quite empty and so the tour ended up being a private for just the two of us. Appellation still went ahead and took us on a fantastic tour. It was both of our first wine tour and we couldn't have chosen better. Our guide was incredibly well informed, funny and an all up great host. We learnt so much and got to try some delicious wines. After we learnt about Alan Brady and his infamous The Wild Irishman wines we asked if it was possible to try one and Appellation made it happen. The cellar doors we visited were clearly carefully selected and well thought through. Its now nearly three months on and I'm still thinking about how great it was enough to come back and review. Massive thank you to Appellation, I encourage anyone considering a wine tour to support them as it is well worth it, an amazing experience.

Hi there. Thank you so much, in turn, for your support - both in booking a wine tour with us and for your amazing feedback last week. So very appreciated in this crazy climate and it was our absolute pleasure to honour your booking in amongst the many cancellations at that time. Do look us up again if you decide another wine tour could be on the horizon, we'll organise different wineries/wines for you to try out. Thanks again for your support for Appellation Wine Tours! Cheers Lise

Garry was a great driver, tour guide and entertainer on our tour on 19 June 2021; the places visited were great and local staff very knowledgeable. We were really impressed with Garry's explanations of all matters pertaining to the tour and the funny stories were great, also had a good crowd on the bus so had a really enjoyable day. Would do it again next time in Queenstown and make sure Garry was the driver, excellent time.

Our driver/host Gary did a fabulous job of getting a group dynamic going in a van full of strangers. He was full of knowledge and we all loved the particular wineries and lunch venue he had chosen for us.
Even if you don't drink wine this is a fabulous way to see the spectacular countryside

What a wonderful experience! Our guide was Paul, who was delightful and shared his outstanding knowledge of the region and of wines. There were 6 of us on our tour, and we thoroughly enjoyed the tastings and learning about each of the boutique wineries visited. Our lunch included a variety of foods with paired wines, and later in the tour there was a cheeseboard with wine pairing. Paul never rushed us, and he included a drive through the golf course and a stop in Arrowtown, as well as commentary on the sights and history along our route. What a perfect day.
