IF YOU’RE VEGETARIAN OR VEGAN OR DF DON’T GO WALTER PEAK FOR LUNCH!!! Its not worth the price because they do not cater any special dietary requirement even after selecting vege or vegan at the time of booking. Disappointed Buffet for vegetarian. Booking #210510120

      Magical trip!
Our cruise around Doubtful Sound was awesome. We all met at the Manapouri Marina and were taken across the lake on a Real NZ boat for 45 minutes across the lake to the drop off point next to the ‘underground’ hydro electric power station Great commentary on the flora, fauna and geology of the lake and its surrounding hills and mountains. We then had a coach trip expertly driven and commentated by Tony over the Wilmot pass to the Deep Water jetty. There were a couple of stops to admire the amazing views. The boat is lovely. We had a small cabin with twin beds and an en-suite shower room which was perfect for an overnight stay. We were well looked after by Captain Brett, nature host Brock, the boat manager, Megan and her team. Excellent food and a well stocked bar. The cruise was fantastic helped, no doubt, by glorious sunshine and calm seas. No whales or dolphins for us but seals on the Tasman sea. The kayaking was fun (make sure you put insect repellant on) and some people swam. The morning started early but included 10 minutes of silence where everything was turned off and we all appreciated the waterfalls and birds. Different to Milford Sound but more ‘magical’’ in our view. Back the same way to Manapouri. A great 24 hours.

A good taste of horse riding
If you have never experienced horse riding before, the tour offers a wonderful introduction. You'll have the opportunity to leisurely ride a horse through the farm, gradually ascending a small mountain and enjoying the breathtaking view. The only downside is that if you're assigned a late time slot for the ride, you might not have enough time to explore the farm on foot.

      Great new experience.
This was an exciting new experience to do over at Walter Peak. It was just a small group of being shown around which was was great as it allowed us to all ask questions, the guides Sonya and Ashley were so knowledgeable and made the experience. Planting a tree, trying the fresh vegetables/fruit straight from the new garden and enjoying the afternoon tea after, all of it was good fun for all ages too, would definitely recommend.

      Not to be missed
I had been told that a trip on the TSS Earnslaw was something one must do in Queenstown and they were right. The boat itself is fascinating - one of the few coal powered steamers still operating in the world. We did the farm tour. Congratulations to Phil and Kim (Border Collie sheepdog) for an instructive and entertaining tour including shearing and demonstrating the fantastic prowess of sheepdogs

      Short of our expectations.
We returned to Doubtful Sound many years after a day cruise in sunny weather, to discover how lucky we had been. This time for the overnight cruise we had the typical wet weather, with poor visibility on the opening afternoon. Fortunately it was clearer in the morning, for a short experience of this stunning place with waterfalls gushing. Perhaps the standard of the vessel is getting a bit dated, and the food rated as good rather than excellent, and wines weren’t included, so it seemed a bit on the expensive side.

      Two hour cruise at Queenstown.
A good half day trip although we were unaware of the lunch and dinner option ashore. The scenery is stunning of course and the cruise is very popular so pre book!

Great review to the ship cruise
Great experience! Except the strong winds that could almost blow my face off… And there was a bit crowded when turning back from the farm, I have to share tables with others.

What a wonderful afternoon at the Walter Peak Farm!
We loved the Iconic Historical TSS stream Boat with the Walter Peak Farm and afternoon tea deal. The boat ride to and from the farm was so lovely, we checked out the engine room, we had a drink on the second floor and enjoyed the lovely views of the lake the whole journey. Kevin, the farm guide, was very friendly and informative. The old farm house now turned into the restaurant is surrounded by the beautiful gardens and the water and mountain views, my 14 year old son loves the farm animals and the ducks in the lake and birds around the property. The afternoon tea has a huge selection of sweet treats and was so yummy. I have taken so many photos just trying to capture everything we seem, but the photos couldn't do it justice. We totally recommended it.

Don’t doubt Doubtful Sound; the experience of a lifetime!
A wonderful experience immersed in a time capsule. Anyone who laments the loss of natural habitat around the world will find solace in the calm majesty of Doubtful Sound. This is good for the soul, and the crew of The Wanderer, capacity 36 passengers, enhance the experience with their quiet enthusiasm for their workplace. And what a workplace! No helicopters, paragliders or jet skis. Just the magnificent scenery, with expert guidance and superb food to accompany it all. The boat is very comfortable, and safety always paramount. The access is an adventure in its own right; a cruise over Lake Manapouri, followed by a 45 minute coach ride with expert commentary about the temperate rainforest you traverse over Wilmer Pass. Centuries-old trees festooned with outlandish mosses, lichen and algae clinging to precipitous slopes that soar above the pass. At Deep Cove you embark on the boat, and your cruise begins. Jaw-dropping images as steep slopes plunge into calm dark waters. There are playful dolphins and whales visit to rid themselves of unwanted passengers that are unable to tolerate the freshwater that sits in a layer above the saltwater below. Kayaking, guided tours in the boat’ tender and swimming are all available. Early morning is magical as the light changes. In all seasons and weather this is unmissable.

An insightful tour of the stunning Doubtful Sounds
The Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise experience is so worth it. We’d recommend getting the 07:30 booking as it’s much quieter so it is worth getting up early for it! All three parts of the trip; the boat on the lake, the drive and then the 3hr cruise, were all lead by expert guides who told us information on the area. During the cruise our guide was absolutely fantastic, we didn’t quite catch his name but he was so knowledgeable and friendly and had only been there for a few months . The doubtful sounds is the most spectacular sight and in our opinion is a must do if down in South Island, the whole experience was truly unforgettable. You’ll see the most breath taking views, and we were lucky enough to have a pod of dolphins swim alongside us on the way back! A truly magical experience that’s definitely worth spending your money on. If I was to go again would love to try out the overnight cruise.

TSS EARNSLAW CRUISE TO WALTER PEAK FARM FOR A GREAT BANQUET.
Cruise on TSS EARNSLAW across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Farm was wonderful. Met people from all over the world. Landed to a most delicious banquet with antipasto, seafood and delicious perfectly cooked BBQ meats. Plus a choice of cooked or salad vegetables. A choice of great deserts. Loved the boysenberry sorbet. Superb meal at every course. Followed by a sheep shearing demonstration and sheep dog rounding up sheep. Well presented and good fun. A beautiful cruise back to Queenstown. Unbelievable scenery.

Beautiful Doubtful but be aware of booking scams with non-existent small boats!
Doubtful sound is definitely nicer than Milford even if it is more complicated to get there (boat, bus, boat). I recommend. The negative is with booking as I booked via TripAdvisor for a boat of max. 45 people but ended it with almost 150. The local operator told me that there is no 45 people boat. I paid more because I wanted a smaller crowd!

We had booked Christmas dinner months ago. I had specified that I am pescatarian and had emailed just to be extra sure that they could cater to my dietary requirements. They had sent a sample menu that showed six cold seafood starters and a hot fish item. However, the spread they served didn’t include any fish in the hot items and only three cold seafood starters. I complained; I had to, because I felt cheated. I was informed that because it was “Christmas dinner”, they decided to scrap the seafood. I am sure the management had good rationale, but how about informing the pescatarian customer who had booked several months in advance? Had this operator been honest, they could have informed me a few days before Christmas what their exact spread was going to be. Instead, I had to discover their “fish-less” spread at the dinner table!!

After I complained, to their credit the chef rustled up something for me. It was palatable. But, hey, this was supposedly a buffet (“bottomless” supply), whereas what I was served was a plate of something rustled up in a hurry.

Finally, here’s the last straw. The waitress asked if they could offer me a complimentary drink “as an apology”. I graciously consented, but when I ordered a Pinot Noir, I was told that that particular wine wasn’t complimentary. I said “never mind, I’ll pay”. When it was payment time, I had handed over my credit card, and it was “tapped”. Another waitress then happened to come along and said that my drinks (son’s lemonade and my wine) were complimentary. But, too late … my card was already charged. Can’t say they didn’t try to “apologise”.

Finally, to those customers who are used to Asian buffets: advice is to avoid this place like the plague. They don’t refill or replenish. PERIOD. Given my limited choices, I had to go back to the buffet quickly enough, only to find several empty counters. There were some scraps or shreds of smoked salmon, shells of mussels (no mussels inside), bits or scraps of cheese, the pasta bowl was empty. Upon asking if there’s going to be a replenishment, I was asked to wait. WAIT? For them to refill everything?

    Dear RealNZ -

    1. Please ask this outfit to lift their game. They clearly don’t know international best practices; so, do ask them to visit a few brunch or dinner buffets in Singapore, Hongkong, Bangkok, etc.
    2. Message to your management: PLEASE practise ethical standards in the future. Cheating is not good. It leaves a “ bad taste” in the mouth, literally. If you cannot meet dietary requirements, please SAY SO. Don’t cheat!!!

Cruising Lake Wakatipu upon the only working coal run steam powered ship through unparalleled vistas to a gourmet BBQ dinner at Walter Peak’s Homestead Restaurant, amazing . Sheep shearing and sheep dog herding demonstrations, amazing. Watching the engines working , the fires being stoked and listening to them run efficiently and quietly as childhood memories of riding steam trains come prominently to mind and being right in the engine room ...priceless !!!! Thank you TSS Earnslaw.

Kia Ora. The TSS Earnslaw sounds like it was definitely the right mode of transport for you and kept you entertained - she's very special. Thank you for your feedback, it's great to hear you enjoyed everything from the sheep shearing and sheep dog demonstration, to the dinner and views. We hope the rest of your visit to the region is just as memorable and you have the opportunity to visit us again one day soon. Kind Regards - The Team at Real Journeys.

This tour was for us a thoroughly enjoyable way to cap off a day in Queenstown (we were fortunate to have beautiful weather). The TSS Earnslaw is an interesting and fun boat to travel in, and gives you great views of Lake Wakapitu. The Walter Peak farm is immaculate and well located on the lakeshore with a view back to Queenstown. The buffet dinner was of a high standard and the service was great. The short sheep dog show afterwards was fun, too, even if you’ve seen similar presentations before. A lovely way to spend the afternoon/evening. (Quick note to the TSS Earnslaw crew: we were seated on the top level and heard the muffled sounds of commentary through the speakers, but couldn’t hear a word of it over the sound of the engines and music and general hubbub. We would have liked to. It seemed a bit of a waste to go to the trouble of providing such commentary (which I’ll guess was interesting) but not allowing passengers to actually hear it. Perhaps the audio set-up could use some improvement).

We took the 4pm round trip cruise on the Earnslaw including dog show and buffet dinner across the lake. It was such a great experience. Ever aspect of the experience was great and the dinner was amazing. The staff at the homestead where we had dinner were so helpful, attentive and accommodating. I would highly recommend this experience to everyone regardless of age.

This is a beautiful old ship and the experience is priceless for kids. The food at Walter Peak is gorgeous and the process of getting through lunch well thought out. Staff are well equipped to deal with a large number of diners and every event is well timed. There are alot of people and lining up is never pleasant but they made the process very smooth and functional.

Absolutely Amazing trip on Steamship to Walter Peak Farm. The trip was travelling in history and the dinner at the Farm was amazing, everything from meats, salads, vegs and desserts. Truly amazing. The sheep dog trial rounding up the sheep and the sheep shearing was fantastic, excellent trip and highly recommend.

I took the kids (11 & 13) on the TSS Earnslaw over to Walter Peak high country farm. The cruise was lovely, it was a January evening so the daylight lasts for ever. Dinner at Walter Peak was huge and good quality - all you can eat buffet and we did over-indulge a little. The sheep shearing and working dog demonstration afterwards gave us time for the food to settle before we headed back to Queenstown. We were all well entertained by the sheep, dogs and presenter at Walter Peak. Sunset at the end was just perfect.

The TSS Earnslaw Cruise to Walter Peak High Country Farm was unseasonably rainy the evening I went. I very much enjoyed the scenery and dining experience, nonetheless. The views from Lake Whakatipu were so awesome and grand. The air was so clean and fresh; it filled my lungs with happiness. The atmosphere inside the vessel was that of excitement, anticipation, and pure joy. Drinks were flowing, music was playing.
The Walter Peak grounds are a site to behold. The working property has so much history and the owners have done a fantastic job keeping the homestead in its original state.
And, the seasonal menu!!!!!!!!! O.M.G. Fresh succulent meats for sure, vegetarian and vegan dishes as well. It was a feast of thanksgiving. So much flavor and love were beautifully cooked in each of the meals.
I only gave it 4 stars because that evening, it was rainy and cold. IT was getting dark, so, it was bedtime for the sheep and dogs. I’m sure that a lovely sunny day would make the Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ Dining experience a 10/10! I would definitely go back, especially for the food!

We are generally independent travelers, but thought this 7 pm tour would be worth it as we had not experienced NZ sheep beyond driving past them or, occasionally, eating them! The sheep shearing and the dog demonstration were both impressive and satisfied our needs. The steamship ride and the BBQ buffet dinner, to us, were enjoyable bonuses. It was cool to see the inner workings of the ship, and on the way back from the farm we were treated to a beautiful night sky which we’d managed to miss during the rest of our trip due to cloudy skies. The dinner was delicious with more than enough choices for everyone. If you eat pork, the pork belly was wonderful. Also the sticky toffee pudding and the little tarts. Yum. (I think that you get to meet and pet the animals during the day trips. We would have liked that, but it was not possible for the 7 pm event.)
