Highlights
  • Guided hike along part of the Milford Track
  • Magnificent views as you cruise across Milford Sound
  • Walk the swing bridge looking out over Giant's Gate waterfall
  • Small-group tour with a maximum of 12 people
What to expect
  • We begin with a short boat ride across Milford Sound’s Deep Water Basin to Sandfly Point.  This is the end point of the Milford Track, but the start of our hike. From here we begin our guided walk, meandering alongside the cascading Arthur River then moody Lake Ada, on a well formed track. Our destination and half way point is Giants Gate waterfall. This spectacular waterfall is best viewed and photographed from the large swing bridge spanning the river. There is much to see, from the ancient trees covered in lichen, to the vibrant green ferns and mosses below. Walking in a small group (maximum 12 people) your nature guide will point out the native fauna and flora, and share the fascinating human heritage of the track, bringing the area to life. On completion of the walk an opportunity is made for photos at the sign marking the end of the walk, festooned with the boots of walkers that have made it to the end of the walk, not a single step further. Then we rejoin the boat for a transfer back to the Milford village.

Milford Track & Cruise
Jan. 2020
I took my three kids (age 14, 11 and 11) on the combo trip with Trips & Tramps. First we walked on the Milford Track and then we did the cruise on the Milford Sound with Real Journeys. Overall it was a good day. It was nice not to drive - be sure to bring motion sickness pills if that is an issue for you! We enjoyed the hike. It was pretty easy and thankfully the rain stopped just in time. The only problem was the sandflies - ugh! They are everywhere in this part of New Zealand. It poured on the boat ride and we could see very little, but oh well. Our only issue was that the guide was fairly boring. There was a lot of information conveyed but not in an interesting way. No jokes or humor!

Thanks for your review. We pleased to hear you had a good day with us and enjoy both the Milford Track and boat cruise on the Sound. Those sandflies sure do get under your skin! We employ a lot of different guides with different attributes and this means some guides appeal more to some people, while they don't to others. Take care, stay safe and healthy!

Honest company
We had a tree down on the road on our way to Milford sound so did not get to do the hike. There is no cell service between Te Anau and Milford sounds so we couldn’t contact them for two days. When we got back to town I had an email saying they heard about the tree issue and that we would be getting a refund, no questions asked.

Really appreciate it! Thanks!

Glad we were easy to deal with, even if we didn't get to host you. Fiordland is a wild and unpredictable place so sometimes you just have to roll with it all! Maybe we can take you for a walk another time.

Wonderful Half Day Hike
Jan. 2020
This was simply a wonderful day out experiencing this amazing part of New Zealand.
It's a great way to get a taste of the world famous Milford Track, without having to walk for three days, climb mountains or camp.
There's a short cruise across the Sound and up one tributary to the very end of the track, then a walk for just under 2 hours to the Giant Gate Waterfall for a hot drink, then you turn around and head back.
There are sensational views, especially on the short cruise, and the waterfall is a spectacular end. Along the entre route guides stop to explain the hstory of the track and point out trees, plant and birds.
Each group is around a dozen people, and ours ranged from an elderly woman, to a young couple who had booked this after missing out on getting a spot on the full track. The guide made sure the trip kept pace with everyone, but also got us back to the us in time to ensure those taking the additional cruise were not late.
This was the only guided walk we did in NZ, as it was the only one we could see no way to do without some form of transport but it was well worth it.
As you are walking from the end of the track, you don't meet any other hikers until close to the turnaround point, and even then, in peak season, we only crossed paths with a few other people the entire walk.
We drove to MIlford Sound from Te Anau and met the guide at the visitor terminal - it was a little chaotic as they rounded up people from various groups amidst crowds arriving and departing on dozens of cruises and tours. Some signage or specific pick up point would have made this easier as this termianl is huge.
(Warning note - this terminal bizarrely has no cafe, just toilets, and 2 vending machines, so, don't spend any more time here than you have to. If you need food or coffee stop at the main cafe on your way, or bring your own).
Also, if driving yourself be aware new parking rules mean unless you want to spend a fortune, you'll need to stop at the long stay park, which is about 20 minutes walk or wait for the shuttle which doesn't start until 8am.
Even the expensive paid parking is still a good 10 minutes walk from the terminal.

Thank you for your honest review, yes travel to Milford Sound comes with a number of challenges with no communication and limited parking. But on the Milford Track it is a world of it's own, and few people too. Which at the end of the day is magical!

Kate was an amazing guide for my half day tour. She knew so much about the flora and was willing to stop and show me the various native plants. I could have gone on the hike but without Kate I would have not known what plants I was seeing.

What a delightful guide Douglas was. His knowledge and passion made this hiking tour truly exciting and memorable. Becs, our guide on the Kepler trek was outstanding. Her patience, gentle encouragement and guidance helped me through, what was for me, a very difficult challenge. I highly recommend Trips and Tramps for their excellent service and guides. Ellice L

Hi, thanks so much for your review. We aim to give excellent service and our guides are a big part of that. We are all hikers and travellers ourselves so we know what it's like to be on holiday and to also find yourself on a tour that is a little challenging or outside your comfort zone - we have great empathy for that! Safe travels. Madeleine

The only way to do a guided day hike along the Milford Track
Feb. 2018 • Couples
We enjoyed a day hike along the Milford Track to Giant's Gate Falls with our guide Mark.

It's a great way to get up close and personal with Milford Sound and we'd highly recommend it. It can be wet and muddy, so bring a good pair of hiking shoes or boots. Rainproof clothing is also advisable.

You'll meet your guide and the Milford Sound Visitors Center, unless you made prior arrangements for them to pick you up in Te Anau, which we did. This helped us avoid the long, winding road, and gave us the opportunity to chat more with our guide. We'd highly recommend it.

Hi, glad you had such a good day even in the rain! You make a good comment about bringing good shoes and wet weather gear. Milford Sound can get over 9m of rain a year so we often experience rainy days - makes for fabulous waterfalls and a lush vibrant (rain)forest. You made a good call taking our transport option - the road is quite different to other roads in NZ. Thanks for your review. Kind Regards Madeleine

Loved it!!
Steve and mark were our tour guides. It was great to hear Steve’s knowledge of the surroundings on this walk. It was a good amount of time to get a taste of what a 4 day walk is sort of like. We are glad we selected this option as the other longer walks would have been too much for my 12 and 14 yr old. Not to mention me too.

Thank you for your review of the Milford Track and its great to know it was a good level for your family, including the children. Yes the 11 km is a nice length - you know you have gone for a good walk but it isn't too much. Wonderful to hear you loved it and the guides Mark and Stephen added to your experience.

Great people
Jan. 2018 • Couples
My wife & I just completed 4 day hikes with Trips & Tramps. This company is terrific. Our guides - Yvette, Douglas, Neil & Jeff - were exceptional. They had the relaxed Kiwi character but were knowledgeable & professional at all times. The company exceeded our expectations in all areas. If your are heading to the Fiordland National Park in NZ we recommend you try this great little company.
