High Octane “Kia Ora”—best welcome to Christchurch!
Can’t think of a better way to begin one’s first (or 21st) visit to Christchurch. Our guide, Riwai of Āmiki Tours led us on an informative, fun, poignant and tasty meandering through this city of history, resilience, natural beauty and food and shopping treats. Our interests were architecture and culture, and he adapted the planned tour to one that focused on our interests. He also gave us a superb introduction to Māori history and culture. Being half Māori himself, he offered an eloquent perspective on the history of the people, their interactions with explorers and their art and culture. The tour finished up Riverside eatery, in a pub with excellent lunch time food and bespoke mocktails. It was a pleasure and privilege to have been introduced to to Christchurch (and New Zealand) by us a knowledgeable, humorous, empathetic and well-travelled expert. Do not miss out on the tour of a lifetime!!

Amazing! Would highly recommend for your first day in Christchurch!
Really enjoyed our Kai bites tour. Our tour guide Emily was very personable and really receptive to all of our questions. They showed us a couple of great places to find some grub (the food on the tour was delicious), and also showed us a lot of the local art, community centres and history. Emily had a real passion for the area that came through and got us excited about the next couple of days we were spending in Christchurch. We would really recommend this tour to anyone on your first day in Christchurch as it did highlight a bunch of areas we wanted to spend more time in ourselves. We also learnt loads about the Maori culture and the way that various cultures have intertwined and coexist to create modern Christchurch.

      A Most Amazing Evening !
Riwai Grace's tour justifies the name of Amiki - what a legendary storyteller of our time. From giving us all the little details about Christchurch to expressing his hope for the future, you can not help but believe this is why one travels the world in the first place. The tour in itself was a relaxed walk around Downtown Christchurch visiting various restraunts and bars that very aptly tied the past into the future of this amazing city. Riwai is your guide, you're friend and just the most delightful company while you sample some of the best food and drink there is to offer. I also appreciate the fact that on a rainy long weekend with just 2 people, Riwai and Cate still took us on the tour. As a tourist, spiritual wholesome experiences are rare, but this is a highlight that one must not miss.

Kai Safari - Night of Delights - Perfect evening!
Our family of 4 (older) adults joined Ash for the Kai Safari dinner tour. Highly recommend this for the overall experience. Ash shared many insights into Maori and Christchurch history/heritage as we walked in the central Chch area. She selected excellent restaurants for us to sample a variety of food and drinks - the cost of the tour provided plenty to eat and drink. Also in our tour group were 3 delightful younger women traveling together. I think this type of tour appeals to curious people, who are willing to try new things and interact with strangers. Ash also made it a very welcoming environment. It was one of the highlights of our New Zealand trip.

      On your feet!
This is a MUST for first time travellers to Christchurch, we were a group of 4 Retiree aged. Our lovely guide was Ash, she was so knowledgeable, friendly and a pleasure to be with, the two hours flew by and we all felt we learned a lot. There is so much to this amazing resilient and beautiful city, I think we will need a return visit to see and learn more. Thank you Ash, we enjoyed it immensely.

Ashley was a well informed guide and accommodated our interests in the tour as well as providing some local insights which laid the foundation for what we took in during the rest of our stay.

      A Must-Do in Christchurch
If you do have some spare time in Christchurch, the tour would be highly recommended. Our guide (Riwai) whom did an amazing job in transferring his passion for the city and the Maori to us was the perfect guide. We learned a lot about the history of the city and New Zealand and got plenty of ideas on how to spend our time after the tour. Definitely worth it!

The tour was fantastic - we visited a couple of food spots and each had a great story, a fantastic team looking after us and of course delicious food and drinks. Between our stops, our guide Riwai showed us parts of the city and taught us the history of Ōtautahi, the city itself is bustling and it’s great to see its resurgence after the earthquakes. Our tour felt personalised and we all felt completely at ease with Riwai after a slightly stressful day of driving. Highly recommend Amiki tours to tourists visiting New Zealand but also kiwis visiting Christchurch whether it be your first time there or you’re just wanting to learn, see and eat something new. With so many dining options in the city, it’s great to be taken to the best spots by someone who loves food as much as us!

Phenomenal tour. We had Ash and she was great. Full of so much knowledge and love for her city and culture, and really made us feel part of it all. It was a great way to explore the city, and I highly recommend to anyone traveling to Christchurch for the first time. It's a great first-day activity. We got so many good recommendations that this tour has made the rest of our trip even better. Can't recommend it enough.

We did the Kai Safari Food Tour and had the most amazing evening touring with Riwai, our fabulous guide. We were a small group of just 2 couples, who came together as strangers and left as friends. Food, wine and conversation flowed freely, led by Riwai and joyously continued by us all.

The local Māori stories told with such pride and heart by Riwai about his people were inspiring. He is a born storyteller, whose passion and heart for his people is there for all to see and admire. However it is his warmth towards all people, no matter their nationality or persuasion which shines the brightest. He’s wonderfully inclusive, kind and big-hearted, characteristics which were on full display all evening, no matter whom he was talking to or interacting with.

On the food side, we ate extremely well and Riwai tweaked our venues on the night, to offer our little group the best possible experience. Working on the fly for the benefit of his guests is clearly something he excels at. The hospitality of our host was generous and we were encouraged to choose our own drinks while Riwai gave us his recommendations for the best shared food plates to fill happy tummies. As a non-drinker I didn’t miss out, with plenty of non-alcoholic beverage choices on offer. The Kawakawa tea at our first venue was absolutely phenomenal.

Kai Safari Food Tour is more than a meal, it is an opportunity to connect with a culture and hear about some of its proud history while enjoying delicious food and wine. All the while enjoying time spent with new friends and a truly wonderful, gracious host. Highly recommended.

No food pics, coz I don’t want to spoil the surprises 😊

Our tour with Ash was amazing. Her love of Christchurch shone through as she showed us her city through her eyes. She is articulate and knowledgeable: a dynamite combination. Her storytelling is engaging and helped us to begin to understand the Māori culture and New Zealand history.
This should be a don’t miss tour in Christchurch, especially under Ash’s guidance. We are all grateful that we had this opportunity with her.

I am so glad I booked this tour. Riwai made me feel welcome and shared so much history about Christchurch and his own experiences. It was educational, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. I was already enjoying Christchurch but learning about the city’s rebuild after the earthquakes from a local perspective helped me better appreciate the city and what they’ve done.

It was the perfect combination of history, culture and food shared by a gracious tour host. 100% would recommend.

P.S. I am also appreciative as a solo traveler that they honor the reservation/tour even if only one person books.

I signed up for the Kai Safari tour as I was looking for a edgy, relevant food tour that would give me a good overview of Christchurch. Didn’t disappoint I got a lot more than I expected l. Rawai was my guide, he wqs punctual. It was winter so, slower in terms of tourism, and I was the only one. And tour was still kept on and I appreciated that. This is a lot more than a ‘food tour’ you got a real insight into Christchurch history and it’s growth in the recent years from a Māori lens. It’s very apparent that this new dynamism came from what the city had to endure in the earthquake over the years.

After one night, you didn’t just get a sense of christchurch the food scene but also who Rawai and his wife Cate and where their passion came from starting this business, they are very big advocates for Māori history, and the growth and progress as a community. It was nice breaking bread trading travel stories and life stories.

The food was very good, if you wanted a quick overview of the food scene and recommendations, this was one way to do it. Really good food at King of the Snake and Wine Cellar, he’s got a good heartbeat on the food scene. Rawai and Cate are proponents of trying as many places so they can add recommendations to the tour.

There was supposed to be one more stop, but I was crashing out from jet lag and so full! The benefit of this is you get to try small plates from multiple good places in one night, good if you don’t have that much time in a city. Rawai was also kind enough to walk me back to my city fringe hotel as he wanted to make sure I got back safe at night. Appreciate him looking out! Very good first night here in NZ, thank you for hosting me, I had a blast !

We had a great experience with Riwai. His passionate storytelling about Christchurch and the various cultural significances sprinkled throughout the city were invaluable. We appreciated the openness exhibited throughout our tour and pointers to local cafes and restaurents. It never felt like a tour and we enjoyed learning a lot about the assimilation of local native culture in mainstream society.

This walking tour of the quaint downtown area is so charming, my only regret was not spending more time here! Mr. Riwai is kind, informative, knowledgeable and well-traveled. He was easy to converse with and gave me a great overview of his lovely city's cultural history while introducing me to some fantastic cuisine and local craft beer! I can't recommend this walking tour enough, especially if you're short on time. 100% WORTH IT!

A fantastic experience with our guide Ash, starting with a beautiful Māori welcome and hope that we ended our journey as friends. Ash is a lovely, insightful and gracious storyteller taking us to culturally meaningful spots
throughout the city. I loved her genuineness through our ‘journey’ and the balance of stories she shared. A big hug at the end of what felt like too short a time. Thanks Ash!
