About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 825lindsyr0 contributionsFive starts for Stephanie!!!Unfortunately our whale watching got canceled as we were in line due to weather conditions. However our guide Stephanie made the afternoon absolutely wonderful by giving us a tour of the peninsula and showing us local landmarks. She was incredibly knowledgeable and we were able to have an amazing afternoon even without seeing whales! By the time we returned to the hotel they had already contacted us about a refund (we chose not to go on the alternate excursions offered), all in all they were a great company to work with and I wouldn’t hesitate to book with them again if I’m ever back in New Zealand!!!!Written 18 March 2025
- Seaside346581759180 contributionsGreat tour/great guideVery enjoyable trip. Our guide Pete was amazing and very informative. You will get a great education on a wide variety of New Zealand subjects, while seeing a beautiful country. Highly recommend .Written 14 March 2025
- SMSS_730 contributionsGreat day wine tasting! The tour was exactly as advertised: we were picked up and driven to three different wineries to taste different reds, whites and rosés, and have a meal at one of the wineries. Meal was adaptable to different diet types. Our group size (9) was very manageable and pleasant. Small suggestion: it would be great if the wineries could give cards with the names of the wines tasted (or write them on a blackboard so we could photograph) so we could have them for future reference/purchase. Our guide (Rob) was very pleasant.Written 11 March 2025
- conniea9990 contributionsHelpful tour to understand the rebuild post earthquakeScotty was very knowledgeable but talked nonstop. My brain needed a break now and then. I found myself tuning him out unfortunately. The animal reserve was nice but the guide would start talking as soon as he started walking away from us all and only the first few people could hear him. He needs a microphone or not talk until we are all present. I told him we could not all hear him and nothing changed.Written 10 March 2025
- Ross R0 contributionsNice tripScenic train journey to Arthur’s Pass. Pleasant trip with tour guide Graham. I know the afternoon did not have the farm visit due to a medical event but a simple cup of tea/coffee would have been nice. I am not sure the lunch was value for moneyWritten 6 March 2025
- Q7735VTrobertm0 contributionsTranzAlpine day tour to Arthur’s Pass from ChristchurchGraham was a great driver and guide full of commentary for the area. This is a great way to experience the TranzAlpine train to Arthur’s Pass which took a bit over two hours from Christchurch. Graham was right there to meet us. He did have a mishap with the van on the way up as a side window was shattered by a passing logging truck. I say this as he had already coordinated a replacement van and our tour’s safe travel was paramount. We hiked the Devils punchbowl which had spectacular views and returned to to have a lunch coordinated in advance. We visited various overlooks and photo stops in route back to Christchurch. We were not able to visit the sheep farm as there was a medical incident related to the farmhouse that was communicated to us the day prior to the tour. We wish them full and speedy recovery and appreciate the communication prior to the tour. Would recommend this full day tour, well worthwhile with spectacular scenery.Written 6 March 2025
- X6196BZjosephk0 contributionsDon't Book This TourThe operator cancelled us only two days before the tour. By that time, all decent tours were unavailable. Here's what they said: "Your driver allocated on Saturday 8th Feb for this tour is now unavailable due to personal reasons, and as its a double cruise ship day in Lyttelton we are unable to operate this tour." Don't risk it, book with someone else.Written 6 March 2025

He gave some great ideas for lunch and plenty of time to have lunch and do some shopping before having to move on to other places. The Antarctic Center was great. - D6591JFsusans0 contributionsSmall Group Fun in ChristchurchJoseph was our guide for the great day we had in Christchurch. He gave us lots of insights about this wonderful city where we began the drive with expansive views of the area and continued into the city. A stop at Mona Vale gave us a chance to stroll through the beautiful gardens. His commentary on the earthquake destruction and rebuilding of the city was informative and interesting. We enjoyed the city center for a lunch break where we had all sorts of places to choose from to please each person's tastes. There was even a little time to do some shopping before we met back at the van. Our visit to the Antarctic Center was a real treat. Our group tried each experience and wandered throughout the building at our leisure. Glad we chose this excursion because the day was well-spent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!Written 24 February 2025
- LauraN8260 contributionsBeautiful & fun winery tour with a bit of Christchurch city highlights tooStarted with a driving tour of Christchurch and learned about their devastating earthquake 14 years ago. Enjoyed a stop at a garden along the way. Then visited 3 wineries in the Waipara wine country - enjoyed the beauty of the countryside as well as each of the wineries. Had a nice lunch at the second winery. Our bus held 16 people - nice size and we had good people and a nice driver. This would have been a 5 star trip except for 2 things - one was the stop at the overlook was crammed with way too many people and buses at the same time which made it hard to enjoy and the bathrooms were very limited. The other was our driver had problems with his microphone so I think he didn’t share as many stories as we were driving.Written 24 February 2025

Then off at Arthur’s pass into a minibus for ride back to Christchurch. Stops at waterfalls with steep hike and sheep farm to watch interesting shearing and herding by super friendly dog Toby. Guide Jude ran a tight ship and kept things moving.Written 9 February 2025
- Keith B0 contributionsA definite recommendation!A great day out seeing the sights Christchurch has to offer. Our driver/guide Kevin was extremely knowledgeable and informative. Answered many questions put to him by the crowd. We took in some great views and lovely gardens and learned of the effects of the 2010/11 earthquakes and subsequent rebuild of the city. A highly recommended tour.Written 8 February 2025

We had an AWESOME day with Tania! Pick-up from hotel was on time she entertained us with local knowledge, stories and her version of jokes as we picked up additional people in Christchurch and the cruise ship at Littleton Harbour. It is a long and winding road to Akaroa. There was a rest break at Little River to stretch your legs before reaching Akaroa an hour later. Boarded the dolphin watching tour at 10:30. We did see dolphins, seals and one penguin, had the included lunch at BullyHayes", both the salmon and fish and chips were delish. At 2:30 boarded the van for the trip back to Christchurch with brief stops at the Barry Bay Cheese Factory. No demonstration as it was Saturday, but shop was open. Cheeses are nice. Second stop was at hilltop to photo stop with view of Akoroa and the bay. Last stop was to drop cruise ship passengers off, then a return trip via New Brighton before being dropped off at hotel. Drop cellphone in van on way out, Tania was back at the hotel returning it before I even missed it. A very big THANK YOU to Tania as it would have been a trip spoiler.

Akaroa is a beautiful place visit, everything is so pretty there, the houses, land scapes, plants, trees, shops and cafes etc. we had a best salmon dish there as part of the tour in Bully Hayes restaurant, the coffee is nice in one of the cafe. Since we couldn’t go on boat trip due to the weather I got half money refund. On the way back we stopped at some scenic locations. It’s worth a trip, thank you

This day tour included a scenic drive to Akaroa with a nice stop about an hour out at Little River for rest room and cafe. Plenty of time to explore the town and enjoy an excellent lunch at Bully Hayes restaurant. The highlight was the two hour catamaran cruise via Black Cat Cruises. We were able to observe Hector’s dolphins ,New Zealand fur seals and plenty of bird species. Brief stop at a cheese shop on the way back.
Pete was an excellent host/driver with passionate commentary during the round trip commute from Christchurch.
A really enjoyable day!

We paid $240NZ each for this excursion. The entire journey from Christchurch and back by mini bus was cramped and uncomfortable. The driver was not communicative and failed to mention that the best attraction in Akaroa is the very informative museum. The visit to the cheese factory was a waste of time. We saw a worker engaged in the manufacturing process but nobody told us what he was actually doing although we were given the opportunity of trying a few samples; however we might as well have been visting the local Countdown. By contrast the boat trip was excellent but upon checking the operator's website we found that the cost per person was $95NZ. While that was very reasonable it meant that Leisure Tours was effectively charging us $145NZ each for the remainder of the trip. I will leave it to others to decide whether that represents good value but for me it was a rip-off. Five stars for the boat trip but one for Leisure Tours.

Unfortunately the reviewer does not provide a date of travel or a drivers name and we have searched back over the past four months and can find no one by the name Richard E travelling with us. Furthermore we do not operate this tour in mini buses. In the circumstances we have reported this review to TripAdvisor. Everyone can see from all the reviews for this tour that this tour is not consistent with the other reviews we have received for the same tour,

We live along a vibrant coast so I'm a bit jaded on beach towns so this place did not meet my expectations and we did not enjoy our lunch choices at Bully Hayes. The restaurant was not busy and yet they crammed 5 of us into a table for 4 making it difficult to place beverages, elbows, etc. The boat out to the marine reserve was good, you cannot see the penguins, don't plan on it. I'm seen enough fur seals to last my life, but we were fortunate to have an abundance of playful Hector dolphins hang around the boat. Before arriving in town, we stopped at a beautiful viewpoint. Afterward, we stopped at a cheese place. Seriously, you should drop that from the tour, it is ridiculous and not worthy of being called a tasting. Waste of time. I wouldn't do this trip again...too much time and money for the result.

Although we are unable to ascertain the date travelled we have spoken to the restaurant regarding the lunch settings to ensure our customers are not too squashed. As we are sure you are aware everyone's expectations, views and opinions differ and that is what makes us individuals. Having received 100's of reviews on various platforms for this day tour to Akaroa it is clear that the majority of our clients are not in agreement with your sentiments regarding the township, the nature cruise of the lunch. For anyone reading this review and subsequent reply we would invite you to also read all of the other wonderful reviews of this day tour.

The trip to Akaroa was delightful. Even though the day began as a foggy, overcast day, Tania, our guide was fabulous. She described the views we should be seeing and then, when the skies cleared later in the day, she stopped on our return to Christchurch so we could see and take photos of those places. She filled the ride with stories, history and facts about the area that were very informative. I was glad Tania was our guide for this trip.

The boat ride was lovely. We went in early January, the weather was perfect. Our guide was great, and knowledgeable. Lunch was very good - salmon - however we hadn't known it could be purchased in advance. The restaurant seated us with the group and we paid for the lunch separately - it was $80 for my husband and I. The seals were adorable, and we saw one tiny penguin swimming. A great trip.

Tania did an outstanding tour for us today with interesting facts about the area, humorous anecdotes during the day, and competent and safe driving on the 'long and winding road' to Akaroa. She encouraged us to use our imaginations in the morning when fog and clouds obscured our otherwise wonderful views of the countryside and stopped to let us see the real beauty when, on our afternoon return to Christchurch, the fog had lifted and the beauty of the area was vibrant. In
addition to the wonderful info and stories she gave during our ride to and from Akaroa, she was very friendly, encouraged the group to get to know each other, walked us to our restaurant, walked us to our boat, met us on our return from the boat excursion, suggested a very good ice cream parlor, and stopped at the Takahe Sign to see an overlook of Christchurch. Overall, Tania did a wonderful job of giving us a very enjoyable and worthwhile tour of Akaroa and the area between there and Christchurch. Thank you Tania!

The day started with an on-time pick up from my hotel in Christchurch. Our driver/guide ("steerologist/interrupter") Tania immediately made me feel welcome and like I was in good hands. The scenic drive to Akaroa was absolutely beautiful but I appreciated that someone who was familiar with the long and winding roads was driving and not me.
Of course Akaroa and surrounding areas are the highlight of this tour, but I think Tania was instrumental in making the day enjoyable, relaxed and safe. We got a glimpse of Kiwi life and culture with her anecdotes, jokes, and stories. She really was warm and welcoming and obviously proud of her country (and rightly so).
I got the package that included a lunch at Bully Hayes. There was a preset menu for those on the tour, but the selections all sounded delicious (I enjoyed my grilled salmon). Tania walked us to and from the restaurant and the nature harbor cruise. She even gave us a tip of the best place to sit on the boat (great advice, which I've followed on other boat cruises since!) and gave us enough time to enjoy ice cream after the cruise. We stopped at scenic points to take pictures that weren't crowded with other tourists but were also safe places to stop.
The nature cruise was amazing! We saw fur seals and the elusive Hector dolphins, the smallest dolphin breed in the world. The boat had a lot of people on it but it didn't feel crowded to the point that you couldn't move around to see different parts of the bay.
The only slightly disappointing bit was the Barrys Bay Cheese Factory. Perhaps I read too much into the description from Leisure Tours that "a stop will be made at the Barry’s Bay Cheese factory, where you will get to sample some fine New Zealand cheese" because that was literally all it was -- we stopped by the store where they had cheese slice samples on the counter and we got toothpicks to try them. The cheeses were delicious, the shop was cute and quaint (I did buy a few things to snack on), the shop clerk was friendly, but it really wasn't more than that. Looking back, I don't think Leisure Tours was necessarily misleading in their description, but I think I had different expectations. (I was hoping/expecting that the cheese samples would at least include a short intro or description of the cheeses that were being sampled that day.)
Overall, I still give this full day excursion into Akaroa 5 stars! And if Tania happens to be your guide, then that's a real winner. Thanks Leisure Tours and Tania (with an "I")!

We thoroughly enjoyed the day trip to Akaroa and harbour cruise.
Our driver/guide Scotty is a legend, very knowledgeable on the history
and background, giving us an insight to how this part of NZ was settled.
Akaroa itself is a charming place, the lunch was a chance to catch up wth fellow travellers and hear of their experiences.
On the harbour cruise we saw dolphins, babyseals and a humpback made a brief appearance... this was the first sighting of the season, so a big point score for the skipper and crew.
Picked up some chutneys, cheese and chocs at the factory before heading back to town
Thanks to all for a very enjoyable day out..

Two questions: As sold thru trip advisor this tour states a maximum group of 15 people, but tour company's page says 40 people. Please confirm which is correct. Second, is the lunch option a set selection?
Thanks. This sounds very exciting, just want to be sure what is going to happen
