Take in views over the city of Christchurch, damaged but recovering from the 2011 earthquake, and see all the way to the snowcapped Southern Alps and Canterbury Plains. As you rise more than half a mile (almost a kilometer) to the crater summit, the suburbs of Christchurch recede below you and panoramic views take in Lyttelton Harbour. From up here it’s easy to see how the harbor was formed by a collapsed volcanic crater. At the summit, ride the Discovery ride to see a video of Christchurch, its history, people and volatile geology. Enjoy a snack or meal at the Red Rock Cafe (not included), and browse the Shop at the Top retail experience. Add a Punt ride on the Avon River and glide along in a flat bottomed boat. Relax as a Punter, traditionally dressed in straw hat and blazer, propels you past a romantic setting of boat sheds, trees and riverside paths. See the wildlife float by, and be prepared for all weather with blankets and umbrellas provided.

The best way to get around Christchurch
This service was the best way to get around the city - especially if you are not 100% mobile. You can get on and off as often as you like and the track covers the majority of the city area. A great was to support the city and the re-building program - which is still ongoing after the 2011 earthquake.

      Great experience!!
Our reservation somehow got lost between the booking office and the punting shed but Reese quickly and efficiently got us rescheduled at our original time so we didn’t have to miss anything. He was a very gracious and polite young man and we appreciated his help, thank you Reese!!!

      Christchurch Tram
I only write Honest reviews. Seriously, don't waste your money or valuable vacation time on this overpriced streetcar ride. After trying to hear the commentary for half the ride, myself & 3 other tourists told the conductor to Turn up the speaker. After hearing excuses & lip from the conductor, they finally turned up the volume. For 40NZ dollars, you're better off to put your money toward a new pair of sneakers then to waste it on this!! Truth

      Not Too Much to See
Riding on a vintage tram is fun and the gentlemen who narrate and drive the tram are great. Our issue was that there just wasn’t that much to see and we could have covered the same sights relatively quickly on foot. If you have mobility problems, this could be a good option for seeing the city.

Great way to see the Christchurch
Bought the Activities Pass which included the Gondola, Punting on the Avon and HoHo tram so a great way to get to see it all and a nice way to get around the city. Took the gondola ride first on the way into the city from the cruise ship; cloudy but still gorgeous views and lots of history on the walls at the top. Got on the HoHo and cruised around town easily, especially with lots of construction going on. We were able to city sites including Botanical Gardens and the Cardboard Church. Punting on the Avon was also well worth it. Beautiful, peaceful and punting operators were informative and engaging. Just be sure to read the details as the gondola is a 20 minute bus ride away from the city.

Great way to see Christchurch City.
We paid €40 each (free for under 15’s) and got a full day pass to all the trams which ran throughout the day till early evening. We got on the oldest tram and did a full loop of the city first to get our bearings and an idea of the best places to get off at. We rode three different teams by the end of the day all different and very historic. The drivers give you a great insight to the City as you go round and are very helpful with information and helping you on and off. Fully recommend this.

Don’t Recommend on A Saturday When Cruise Ship Is In
Sorry, I hate to give bad reviews but this hop-on tram was a terrible experience on Saturday for all 4 members of my traveling group. The driver conductor and the ticket assistant talked at the same time, the speaker in back was hideously loud, and no one in my 4 person group could tell which “sites”the conductor was pointing out! Now let’s talk about the mobs of passengers packed in…wowser…it was so loud…so chaotic… and cost $40NZ each for this little noisy “tram” that really didn’t cover that much territory or educate us as to what we were seeing! :( Gonna write it up to a Saturday when a cruise ship was in town

A great way to see the city, with many stopping off points along the route. Our driver gave an excellent commentary throughout our trip. I would recommend this trip.

      Take the tram!
We had so much fun with the hop on hop off tram in Christchurch. Elliott was the attendant on first part of the tour and then he became our driver. This tour was very popular in the early afternoon, after we took the gondola up for amazing views and had lunch. (… 0n a two activity ticket.) Because the tram was so popular, there were no seats. We chose to stand. Elliott was so sweet and gave tidbits of information along the tour. Elliott also went out of his way to help everyone feel welcome. We did end up with wonderful seats part way through our journey. We went around the whole city one time. And then used the hop on hop off on other trams. This is easy to do and the trams are frequent. You can tell Elliott loves his job and the city. We learned so much about the city and its people from this tour that we too have come to love the city of ChristChurch in New Zealand. Thank you.

      Fun Intro to the City
Super fun way to get an intro to the heart of the city. The tram operators give a running description of the city, the buildings, and point out both things that haven't yet recovered from the earthquakes, and the new buildings that have risen since then (though not too tall -- they don't allow anything over 8 stories now!). Nice way to spend an hour or so. After you make the loop, go around again, get off at the Riverside Market for great food choices -- a busy and bustling food hall with so many choices, it's hard to decide.

      Elliot
Elliot was amazing. The whole experience was wonderful. I booked on line and instead of paying 48 for 2 people I was charged in us dollars for the cost of 84 even though it stipulated 24 per person nz. That's not very good at all

Great trip, well worth it but choose your driver.
Great trip, great value and very informative. Commentary from driver Elliott was really comprehensive peppered with some real gems and great humour. Sorry there were some rude passengers who called loudly to each other throughout his commentary..fortunately we were right at the front. Visits great key places to hop off and back on again.

Must do Hop on Off tram
Very enjoyable and all the conductors and drivers were so friendly, helpful and knowledgable. Even waited for us as they could see us running for the tram.

We bought the 3 activity Christchurch pass online from Christchurch attractions for $90 per person. This gave us access to the gondola, the Tram, and the 30 minute river punting experience. The great thing about the pass is that not all activities need to be done on the same day, so we did the gondola and punt on a beautiful sunny day, and saved the tram for a closer, rainy day. All 3 things combined, provided an excellent overview of Christchurch, the old and the reborn city. Highly recommend

It was a great time minus the time travel part being closed. A nice lady employee in the gift shop helped us secure a reservation for a restaurant in Lyttleton before taking the bus further south. I appreciated her willingness to go above & beyond!

Really amazing views and walk up the Bridle path then across to the Gondola. Nice building with some interesting history and a good cafe. 5 stars up until this point

Then went to go down the gondola as we thought it was free if you walked up. We were rudely told to go buy a ticket when we asked, so went to buy a ticket. Cashier ignored me as I waited at the counter and then when I asked the cost bluntly gave it to me.

I think $25 per person to go down is ridiculous particularly after walking up and spending money at the cafe. It doesn’t encourage people to walk up and then catch the gondola down. The staff at counter and checking tickets were rude so pretty disappointed.

Seems like there should be a much better system in place

We didn't pre-book as we were unsure which day we would come. We arrived around 1.30pm on the friday before their long weekend and it wasn't very busy. We are a family of 4 and we found the family combo tickets to be worth while. We ended up getting the gondola and punting family combo. You do not have to do both activities on the same day.

The gondola rides are around 6 mins each way. At the top of the mountain, there are deck views as well as walk out views. The views are stunning even on a winter's day. My camera was not good enough to capture what my eyes could see.

The cafe is a nice place to rest your feet if you went for a bit of a walk around. Staff are friendly and prices are reasonable. It was a pity that the Time Tunnel has closed.

Views were amazing but… the hour wait in the queue completely spoilt the day. Sadly we arrived as coaches dropped off what appeared to be the entire boatload from the cruise ship moored below. No offer from staff to alternate those not from the cruise ship. Due to age all needed assistance to access the gondolas and the whole operation was woeful and painful, exacerbated by staff unbelievably holding up the gondola to ask if you wanted an expensive photograph taking of your visit….choose your day wisely to visit otherwise you waste a whole morning and certainly don’t need a photograph to remember the visit!

A little gimmicky. The gondola ride is like 10 minutes and drops you off in a souvenir shop. There’s a cafe up there too. Quick walk around and I was back down in less than an hour. The Punting on the Avon saved the day. That was really fun. Matt was my punter and he was knowledgeable and the ride on the river was enjoyable.

The Gondola ride was easy as expected. We arrived via 28 bus from Lyttleton. We bought the one way ticket and got up to the top. The trails were pleasantly mark. We took the Cradle Rim Trail all the way back into downtown Lyttleton. It was a much longer hike down than taking the Bridal Path and would recommend it if you prefer to get about 2-3 hours of hiking .

I got there early via bus and it was really nice to be allowed in a little early to get out of the wind

The ride is very smooth even on a windy day. The view from the top is indescribable really. You’re standing on a volcano rim and you can see two cities from there.

There’s a cool ride inside the upper building too that gives you some background on a few things that’s worth doing too. I didn’t eat at the cafe but had an Americano and was nice to sip on while enjoying the stunning view.

Well worth taking the time to enjoy some time going up to the top of the mountain in the gondola as the view was so breathtaking. It was a very hot day yesterday here 17th February, 2020 and the gondola itself was a little hot to sit in but other than that fabulous. We had coffee in the cafe at the top and purchased a couple of items in the gift shop and had quite an extensive chat with the lovely lady behind the counter who was so very helpful in finding us what we wanted. She totally went out of her way to do so and therefore making us extremely happy.
